The social trends of the demand for the return of burial remains, the demand for improved cultural presentation in museums, and the demand for language and cultural education, all of which are being addressed by indigenous peoples around the world, were investigated. The results revealed the reality that the world's indigenous movements, while using common communication tools such as ICT, globalization has never caused homogenization of the world, but rather has transmitted to the entire world historical reflections on respect for cultural diversity and uniqueness. It is clear that nation-states have a responsibility to support the global networking of indigenous peoples in their territories and to work toward cooperation and reconciliation between indigenous peoples and nations. It is necessary to incorporate indigenous studies into public education to ensure linguistic and cultural diversity.

Mal’ta site in Baikal Siberia is a prominent site, where sculptures such as “Venus” and bird made from tusks of mammoth were excavated. Since 1928, excavation was conducted many times, but the excavated point and level of remains were often not clear. Japan-Russia joint research at Mal’ta site was conducted in 2013 and 2014, many identified samples ware obtained. In addition, samples for radiocarbon dating were taken at the National museum of History, the State Hermitage Museum and Irkutsk State University. Over 70 samples, mainly bone samples, including an infant bone and sculpture of Venus were dated and carbon and nitrogen isotopic analyses were conducted for these samples. The important information about the geoarchaeological stratification and age of Mal’ta were obtained.

The project pursued an indigenous people policy which fits in with the unique realities of the Ainu and Japan. It became clear that it's appropriate to revive ethnic culture of Ainu by placing the Ainu’s right to choose one’s ethnic identity on the article 13 of the Japanese Constitution and by imposing the obligation to realize the right on the government. Cultural revival is necessary to advance national understanding of the Ainu people and of a comprehensive policy to improve the social status of the Ainu. The cultural rehabilitation also is effective to increase young Ainu who tackle various issues for the improvement of their social status.

This project resulted in construction of a global-scale database (NeanderDB), which documents more than 3200 Middle and Upper Paleolithic excavated sites across Africa and Eurasia dated to between 200 and 20 kya. A critical evaluation of the spatio-temporal contexts of the compiled data revealed regionally varied replacement and assimilation processes of the two populations, suggesting their possible co-existence and cultural interaction.
The study also investigated potential differences in learning behaviors of the two populations in an effort to test the “learning hypothesis”. The results show that it is too simplistic to postulate innate cognitive differences as the single force accounting for replacement of the Neanderthals. The “learning hypothesis” proposed in 2009 now needs to be updated, taking into consideration non-innate social issues, including the population size and social organization, as important factors affecting learning behavior in the two population groups.

The objective of our project in Fiscal 2007 was to establish a research information network linking archaeological research centers in Russia, China and Mongolia. At the beginning of the year, focal centers from each country were chosen and meetings were held to discuss server requirements for information exchange. In order for each institution to use software that could be easily installed and operated, it was decided to build an autonomous distributed network based on the Global Base developed by Professor Fujita's team at Toyo University.
In Russia, the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Archaeology Institute of Irkutsk Technical University both agreed to set up the network server and concrete progress was made toward this end.
In China, Jilin University initially proposed that it set up a server and a visit was made to this university to discuss this option. However, permission was not given to establish an open systems server and it was also found that Jilin University had financial problems with this project. As a result, it was decided to switch to Renmin University of China, located in Beijing. Global Base had already been set up at Beijing University for geographical research and our project developed in association with this institution.
In Mongolia, the Archaeology Institute of the Academy of Sciences agreed to the proposal, but it was not possible to set up the network due to infrastructure and other problems.
In October, a workshop was held at Renmin University of China. A presentation was made on the Global Base and discussions were held on progress in each country toward forming the research information network. Participants from Russia, China and Japan attended this workshop.

In this research, we intended to establish archaeological chronology defined by calendar dates, using the AMS radiocarbon dating and calibrated dates based on Intcal 98 and Intcal 04.
Dating samples were collected from various sites in Hokkaido.
In National Museum of Japanese History, those samples were processed appropriately by AAA method.
After that, radiocarbon dating of them were performed in some analysis organizations. Then, radiocarbon dates of them were calibrated in National Museum of Japanese History, and calendar dates of them were obtained.
    Consequently, following results were obtained
    1. In Hokkaido, the marine reservoir effects were identified by pottery adhesion carbon samples unearthed not only from coastal sites but also from inland sites.
    2. Therefore, plant residues are the most effective as samples of radiocarbon dating..
    3. The indicated ages were contained in the following times.
First half of Epi-Jomon Culture BC 4th century-AD 2nd century
Second half of Epi-Jomon Culture AD 2nd century-AD 4th century
Middle period of Ohotsk Culture AD 5th century-AD 7th century
Late period of Ohotsk Culture AD 6th century-AD 8th century
Final period of Satsumon Culture AD 13th century
Moreover, the conventional measurement result was collected and the radiocarbon dating database in Hokkaido was created.

In this project, we conducted an archaeological excavation at the Usu-6 site, Date city, Hokkaido, and general survey and mapping of topography in the neighboring area. The project aims to assess the relationship between human adaptations and the changes of natural environment, especially the volcanic activities and sea-level changes in the area along the bay of volcano for the past 10,000 years.
Our research provides the following results. First, the older age range of materials from the Usu-6 site places approximately similar chronological position of the Urahoro type potteries during the Initial Jomon, which dated between cal BC 6,240 and 6,080. This confirms that the Usu-6 site is one of the oldest known shell midden in Hokkaido. Second, we identify that the sector collapse of Mt. Usu, forming the hummocky hill located the Usu-6 site, is dated at least before cal BC 17,620〜17,480, although it was previously thought to be between 9,000 and 7,000 yrs BP. Third, the analysis of available faunal remains suggests that the Initial and Early Jomon peoples brought abundant oysters collecting at the shore reef into the Usu-6 site. After that, they heat-treated their oysters around the rock shelter No.2, and abandoned them around the adjoining rock shelter No.1. Finally, we reveal that rock shelters had been used intermittently as the location of temporary camps in hunting from the Late to Final Jomon.
