Scientific journal, Climate warming may cause earlier spring snowmelt in high and middle latitudes, potentially affecting plant phenology and growth, but experimental results have been inconsistent. We examined whether vessel type explains varying responses to early snowmelt across tree species. Saplings of three diffuse-porous and three ring-porous species were grown under manipulated and control snowmelt conditions. Species-level effects were not significant, but pooled data revealed a significant interaction between vessel type and treatment, indicating that responses differed between vessel types. Diffuse-porous species showed a slight increase under early snowmelt, whereas ring-porous species showed a slight decrease; however, pairwise comparisons within vessel types did not detect significant differences. In contrast, early snowmelt reduced leaf δ 13 C (a water stress indicator) in diffuse-porous but not ring-porous species suggesting reduced water stress in diffuse-porous species. Sugar concentrations also diverged: diffuse-porous species showed a significant decrease under early snowmelt, whereas ring-porous species remained unchanged, implying contrasting frost-protection strategies. The vessel-specific responses could influence forest dynamics under climate change. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings and clarify how functional traits such as vessel architecture shape species adaptations to changing snowmelt patterns. - Antarctic ice-shelf collapse in Holocene driven by meltwater release feedbacks

Circumpolar Deep Water inflow onto Antarctica’s continental shelves is a key driver of accelerated Antarctic Ice Sheet mass loss, both presently and during the last deglaciation. However, the mechanisms driving enhanced inflow and the resultant impact on large-scale ice-sheet retreat events are still not fully understood. Here we address this topic using marine sediment cores from Lützow–Holm Bay, East Antarctica, through analyses of sedimentary beryllium isotopes and complementary proxies. These records, when compared to inland mountain outcrop records, show that ice-shelf collapse and simultaneous inland ice-sheet thinning ~9,000 years ago were associated with enhanced Circumpolar Deep Water inflow and sea-level rise. A hierarchical modelling approach that combines climate and high-resolution ocean simulations suggests that freshwater discharge from adjacent Antarctic sectors into the Southern Ocean probably enhanced the regional inflow into submarine troughs in Lützow–Holm Bay between 10,000 and 9,000 years ago. We propose a feedback loop whereby meltwater from rapidly retreating Antarctic sectors since the Last Glacial Maximum enhanced stratification and Circumpolar Deep Water incursions onto adjacent shelves. Alongside relative sea-level rise, this meltwater feedback triggers further ice-shelf instability and enhances dynamic inland ice discharge, highlighting a mechanism relevant to future Antarctic Ice Sheet changes. - Evaluation of sample storage methods for single particle analyses of black carbon in snow and ice: Merits and risks of glass and plastic vials for melted sample storage

This study presents a high time‐resolution alkenone unsaturation ratios (UK'37) in the Chiba composite section, a marine sedimentary sequence formed in the Kazusa forearc basin in the northwestern Pacific under the influence of the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents. The UK'37 reflects summer sea surface temperature (SST) and records glacial‐interglacial to sub‐millennial‐scale variations spanning the marine isotope stage (MIS) 19, an analog of our Holocene interglacial. At the glacial‐interglacial scale, summer UK'37‐SST and previously published winter SST fluctuations are in tandem with East Asian Summer and Winter monsoon variabilities, respectively. Millennial‐scale UK'37‐SST variations correspond to meltwater events in the North Atlantic. Summer temperature amplitudes maybe half those in winter, suggesting the stable dominance of the Kuroshio Current during the summer and significant winter cooling caused by the Oyashio Current intrusion. Our study reveals the unique seasonally different atmosphere‐ocean coupling system during MIS 19 at the subarctic front in the northwestern Pacific. - Impact of elevated CO2 on the δ13C of n-alkane biomarkers

Scientific journal, Mineral aerosols form a key component of Earth’s dynamic biogeochemical systems, yet their composition and mass are variable in time. We reconstruct patterns in mineral aerosol flux from East Asia, the second largest global dust source, in a peat mire in northern Japan. Using geochemical fingerprinting, we show for the past ~3600 years that high but variable tephra flux dominated regional aerosol loads. A human signal was discernible as elevated pollutant metals, along with East Asian mainland dust, identifiable by its geochemical signature. After ~700 years before the present, dust flux increased as the westerly jet intensified and moved south, the summer monsoon strength reduced, and agriculture expanded. From the 20th century, dust flux increased by two times. Attributable largely to human activity, this demarks a major change in aerosol export to the northwestern Pacific with accompanying increases in fluxes for key micronutrients and increased pollution flux by 16 times. - Miocene ice sheet dynamics and sediment deposition in the central Ross Sea, Antarctica

Drill cores from the Antarctic continental shelf are essential for directly constraining changes in past Antarctic Ice Sheet extent. Here, we provide a sedimentary facies analysis of drill cores from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1521 in the Ross Sea, which reveals a unique, detailed snapshot of Antarctic Ice Sheet evolution between ca. 18 Ma and 13 Ma. We identify distinct depositional packages, each of which contains facies successions that are reflective of past baseline shifts in the presence or absence of marine-terminating ice sheets on the outermost Ross Sea continental shelf. The oldest depositional package (>18 Ma) contains massive diamictites stacked through aggradation and deposited in a deep, actively subsiding basin that restricted marine ice sheet expansion on the outer continental shelf. A slowdown in tectonic subsidence after 17.8 Ma led to the deposition of progradational massive diamictites with thin mudstone beds/laminae, as several large marine-based ice sheet advances expanded onto the mid- to outer continental shelf between 17.8 Ma and 17.4 Ma. Between 17.2 Ma and 15.95 Ma, packages of interbedded diamictite and diatom-rich mudstone were deposited during a phase of highly variable Antarctic Ice Sheet extent and volume. This included periods of Antarctic Ice Sheet advance near the outer shelf during the early Miocene Climate Optimum (MCO)—despite this being a well-known period of peak global warmth between ca. 17.0 Ma and 14.6 Ma. Conversely, there were periods of peak warmth within the MCO during which diatom-rich mudstones with little to no ice-rafted debris were deposited, which indicates that the Antarctic Ice Sheet was greatly reduced in extent and had retreated to a smaller terrestrial-terminating ice sheet, most notably between 16.3 Ma and 15.95 Ma. Post-14.2 Ma, diamictites and diatomites contain unambiguous evidence of subglacial shearing in the core and provide the first direct, well-dated evidence of highly erosive marine ice sheets on the outermost continental shelf during the onset of the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT; 14.2–13.6 Ma). Although global climate forcings and feedbacks influenced Antarctic Ice Sheet advances and retreats during the MCO and MMCT, we propose that this response was nonlinear and heavily influenced by regional feedbacks related to the shoaling of the continental shelf due to reduced subsidence, sediment infilling, and local sea-level changes that directly influenced oceanic influences on melting at the Antarctic Ice Sheet margin. Although intervals of diatom-rich muds and diatomite indicating open-marine interglacial conditions still occurred during (and following) the MMCT, repeated advances of marine-based ice sheets since that time have resulted in widespread erosion and overdeepening in the inner Ross Sea, which has greatly enhanced sensitivity to marine ice sheet instability since 14.2 Ma. - Hydrological and vegetation changes in North Africa over the past 23 000 years: a comparative study of watershed areas of the Nile River using remote sensing and compound‐specific δ2H and δ13C from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea

Hydroclimate variation and vegetation changes of the Nile River watershed area in northeast Africa since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) were reconstructed based on n‐alkanes, their carbon isotope ratios (δ13Cn‐alkanes), and their hydrogen isotope ratios (δ2Hn‐alkanes) in sediments from ODP Site 967 in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The results were compared with the present vegetation cover in the watershed areas using ArcGIS. The average proportion of current grassland in the Equatorial Lake and Ethiopian Highland Plateaus watershed areas was 45.8 and 64.7%, respectively. δ2Hn‐alkanes ranged from −199 to −127‰ and co‐varied with insolation change response to orbital forcing. Depleted δ2Hn‐alkanes were found from deglaciation to the middle Holocene, suggesting increased precipitation during the African Humid Period (AHP) from 15 to 5 ka caused by northward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. However, lower precipitation was inferred by enriched δ2Hn‐alkanes during the LGM and late Holocene. δ13Cn‐alkanes at Site 967 did not show a trend in harmony with δ2Hn‐alkanes and instead exhibited millennial‐scale variations ranging from –25.9 to –33.2‰. These δ13Cn‐alkanes values consistently indicated a C4 grass‐dominated environment in the watershed areas of the River Nile since the LGM, persisting through the AHP and into the present. Reconstructions demonstrated orbital and abrupt forcing of hydroclimate variability while maintaining generally grass‐dominated vegetation with weak precipitation feedback over the late Quaternary. - Radiolarian assemblages related to the ocean–ice interaction around the East Antarctic coast

Scientific journal, Abstract. The Southern Ocean plays a central role in Earth's climate, ecology, and biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, understanding long-term changes in Southern Ocean water masses in the geologic past is essential for assessing the role of the Southern Ocean in the climate system. Radiolarian fossils are a useful tool to reconstruct the water masses of the Southern Ocean. However, the radiolarian assemblages in the high latitudes of the Southern Ocean (south of the polar front (PF)) are still poorly understood. In this paper, we report the radiolarian assemblages in surface marine sediment and plankton tow samples collected from the high latitudes south of the PF. In the surface sediments, four factors (named F1–F4) of the radiolarian assemblages were identified using Q-mode factor analysis, which are related to different water masses and hydrological conditions. F1 is related to the surface waters south of the southern boundary (SB) of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), which are cooled by melting sea ice and ice sheets. F2 is associated with water masses north of the SB. A comparison with the vertical distribution of the radiolarian assemblages in plankton tow samples indicates that characteristic species are associated with the Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) and surface waters north of the SB. F3 is associated with modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW). The radiolarian assemblage of F4 does not seem specifically related to any of the water mass here analyzed. However, the species in this assemblage are typically dwells within ice shelf and/or sea ice edge environments. Radiolarian assemblages here identified and associated with water masses, and ice edge environments are useful to reconstruct the environment south of the PF in the geologic past. - Toward a Cenozoic history of atmospheric CO 2

Scientific journal, The geological record encodes the relationship between climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) over long and short timescales, as well as potential drivers of evolutionary transitions. However, reconstructing CO 2 beyond direct measurements requires the use of paleoproxies and herein lies the challenge, as proxies differ in their assumptions, degree of understanding, and even reconstructed values. In this study, we critically evaluated, categorized, and integrated available proxies to create a high-fidelity and transparently constructed atmospheric CO 2 record spanning the past 66 million years. This newly constructed record provides clearer evidence for higher Earth system sensitivity in the past and for the role of CO 2 thresholds in biological and cryosphere evolution. - Multiple episodes of ice loss from the Wilkes Subglacial Basin during the Last Interglacial

The Last Interglacial (LIG: 130,000–115,000 years ago) was a period of warmer global mean temperatures and higher and more variable sea levels than the Holocene (11,700–0 years ago). Therefore, a better understanding of Antarctic ice-sheet dynamics during this interval would provide valuable insights for projecting sea-level change in future warming scenarios. Here we present a high-resolution record constraining ice-sheet changes in the Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB) of East Antarctica during the LIG, based on analysis of sediment provenance and an ice melt proxy in a marine sediment core retrieved from the Wilkes Land margin. Our sedimentary records, together with existing ice-core records, reveal dynamic fluctuations of the ice sheet in the WSB, with thinning, melting, and potentially retreat leading to ice loss during both early and late stages of the LIG. We suggest that such changes along the East Antarctic Ice Sheet margin may have contributed to fluctuating global sea levels during the LIG. - Influence of Earlier Snowmelt on the Seedling Growth of Six Subboreal Tree Species in the Spring

Scientific journal, Climate warming is advancing snowmelt timing in the spring at high latitudes. To predict tree growth in subboreal forests under warmer climates based on mechanistic understanding, it is important to assess how advancing snowmelt influences tree growth in the spring via ecophysiological changes in subboreal forests. In this study, we conducted a field manipulation experiment of snowmelt timing and investigated the response of tree growth, leaf functional traits, and bud-burst phenology in the spring for the seedlings of six dominant tree species in subboreal forests. We found that the spring growth of only one species (Kalopanax septemlobus) out of six species responded positively to advancing snowmelt. Among the leaf functional traits (leaf mass per area, leaf nitrogen content, leaf δ13C value, leaf dry matter content, and leaf area) and bud-burst phenology, only the increase in leaf area was linked to the enhanced shoot growth of K. septemlobus. The significant change in K. septemlobus might be associated with its ecological characteristics to prefer regeneration in canopy gaps. These results indicate that advancing snowmelt under warmer winters can be beneficial for tree species that can plastically develop leaf area in Japanese subboreal forests. - Amplified surface warming in the south-west Pacific during the mid-Pliocene (3.3-3.0 Ma) and future implications

The Southern Ocean paleoceanography provides key insights into how iron fertilization and oceanic productivity developed through Pleistocene ice-ages and their role in influencing the carbon cycle. We report a high-resolution record of dust deposition and ocean productivity for the Antarctic Zone, close to the main dust source, Patagonia. Our deep-ocean records cover the last 1.5 Ma, thus doubling that from Antarctic ice-cores. We find a 5 to 15-fold increase in dust deposition during glacials and a 2 to 5-fold increase in biogenic silica deposition, reflecting higher ocean productivity during interglacials. This antiphasing persisted throughout the last 25 glacial cycles. Dust deposition became more pronounced across the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) in the Southern Hemisphere, with an abrupt shift suggesting more severe glaciations since ~0.9 Ma. Productivity was intermediate pre-MPT, lowest during the MPT and highest since 0.4 Ma. Generally, glacials experienced extended sea-ice cover, reduced bottom-water export and Weddell Gyre dynamics, which helped lower atmospheric CO2 levels. - Ancient marine sediment DNA reveals diatom transition in Antarctica

Antarctica is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change on Earth and studying the past and present responses of this polar marine ecosystem to environmental change is a matter of urgency. Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) analysis can provide such insights into past ecosystem-wide changes. Here we present authenticated (through extensive contamination control and sedaDNA damage analysis) metagenomic marine eukaryote sedaDNA from the Scotia Sea region acquired during IODP Expedition 382. We also provide a marine eukaryote sedaDNA record of ~1 Mio. years and diatom and chlorophyte sedaDNA dating back to ~540 ka (using taxonomic marker genes SSU, LSU, psbO). We find evidence of warm phases being associated with high relative diatom abundance, and a marked transition from diatoms comprising <10% of all eukaryotes prior to ~14.5 ka, to ~50% after this time, i.e., following Meltwater Pulse 1A, alongside a composition change from sea-ice to open-ocean species. Our study demonstrates that sedaDNA tools can be expanded to hundreds of thousands of years, opening the pathway to the study of ecosystem-wide marine shifts and paleo-productivity phases throughout multiple glacial-interglacial cycles. - Latitudinal variance in the drivers and pacing of warmth during mid‐Pleistocene MIS 31 in the Antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean

Scientific journal, Abstract. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) presently holds enough ice to raise global sea level by 4.3 m if completely melted. The unknown
response of the WAIS to future warming remains a significant challenge for
numerical models in quantifying predictions of future sea level rise. Sea
level rise is one of the clearest planet-wide signals of human-induced
climate change. The Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to a Warming
of 2 ∘C (SWAIS 2C) Project aims to understand past and current
drivers and thresholds of WAIS dynamics to improve projections of the rate
and size of ice sheet changes under a range of elevated greenhouse gas
levels in the atmosphere as well as the associated average global
temperature scenarios to and beyond the +2 ∘C target of the
Paris Climate Agreement. Despite efforts through previous land and ship-based drilling on and along
the Antarctic margin, unequivocal evidence of major WAIS retreat or collapse and its causes has remained elusive. To evaluate and plan for the
interdisciplinary scientific opportunities and engineering challenges that
an International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP) project along the Siple coast near the grounding zone of the WAIS could offer (Fig. 1), researchers, engineers, and logistics providers representing 10 countries held a virtual
workshop in October 2020. This international partnership comprised of
geologists, glaciologists, oceanographers, geophysicists, microbiologists,
climate and ice sheet modelers, and engineers outlined specific research
objectives and logistical challenges associated with the recovery of Neogene and Quaternary geological records from the West Antarctic interior adjacent to the Kamb Ice Stream and at Crary Ice Rise. New geophysical surveys at these locations have identified drilling targets in which new drilling technologies will allow for the recovery of up to 200 m of sediments beneath
the ice sheet. Sub-ice-shelf records have so far proven difficult to obtain
but are critical to better constrain marine ice sheet sensitivity to past
and future increases in global mean surface temperature up to 2 ∘C
above pre-industrial levels. Japanese, 近年,衛星観測などによって南極氷床の融解や流出の加速が相次いで報告され,近い将来の急激な海水準上昇が社会的に強く懸念されている.最近の気候・氷床モデルシミュレーションによると,近年融解が加速している西南極氷床のみならず,西南極氷床より1桁大きな体積をもつ東南極氷床の一部も温暖化に敏感であることが指摘されている.しかし,南極氷床の質量収支は,氷床表面での涵養と消耗のみでなく,氷床沿岸でおきる棚氷の底面融解や氷床からの分離も含むため,そのメカニズムの理解と定量的な観測は容易ではなく,気候変動予測精度向上における課題となっている.一方,南極大陸やその周辺の海底堆積物は採取が困難であり,また断片的ではあるとはいえ,過去の南極氷床変動を復元するために極めて貴重な情報を提供する.こういった情報を集積・解析することで過去の気候変動に対する南極氷床の応答の復元できれば,南極氷床融解メカニズムの理解だけでなく,その知見を将来の気候変動の予測に利用することもできる.そこで我々は,砕氷船しらせによって東南極リュツォホルム湾から新たに採取された海底堆積物試料と,既存レガシーコアを解析・分析し,最終氷期における最大氷床拡大域と完新世におきた急激な東南極氷床融解過程の復元と,そのメカニズムについての考察を進めている.現状では海底堆積物の年代制約に課題があるものの,当該地域における氷床融解過程とそのメカニズムについて得られた新たな知見について報告する. - Mid-Holocene Antarctic sea-ice increase driven by marine ice sheet retreat

Japanese, Organic geochemical proxies have been extensively applied to geochemical study and reconstruction of past environmental conditions. Biomarkers are preserved in a wide variety of archives such as ice core, peat bog, lacustrine and marine sediments and thus can reconstruct various aspects of environmental conditions including the land, ocean and atmosphere. The fundamentals of this approach are the compositions, abundances and compound-specific isotopic compositions of organic molecules that are preserved in archives. For instance, UK´37 and TEX86 indices register upper water column temperature in the ocean while molecular distribution and stable carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions of leaf wax lipids can be used to reconstruct terrestrial vegetation and climate such as temperature and hydrology in a past. 陸上高等植物に由来するテルペノイド(HPT)は、植物の分類によって異なる構造を持つことが知られており、陸源物質の海洋への輸送の供給源や後背地を特定するための有用なバイオマーカーになり得ると考えられる。本研究では、レテン、カダレン、フリーデリンという3種類のHPTに着目して、北西太平洋の表層堆積物中での化合物分布を調べ、それぞれの化合物の起源と輸送過程について考察した。
分析の結果、レテンの分布からは後背地の植生の影響以外に、化石燃料を含む都市大気による影響がみられた。フリーデリンは北西太平洋日本沖で特に多く、陸から遠く離れた外洋域のコアからは総じて微量しか検出されなかったことから、主に河川経由で輸送されていると考えられる。一方でカダレンについては地域・海域による傾向はあまり見られなかったが、これはカダレンが主に大気経由で広範囲に輸送されていることを示唆している。 - D/H ratios of plant-derived n-fatty acid in Lake Biwa sediment core over the last 150 kyrs

本研究はバイマーカーの水素同位体比の古環境研究への適用を目的として、琵琶湖堆積物コア中の植物起源脂肪酸の水素同位体比を測定した。復元された過去15万年間の脂肪酸の水素同位体比は~40パーミルもの変動を示し、その変動パターンは中国の鍾乳石の酸素同位体比と類似しており、北緯30度における夏の日射量の変動に同調していることが示された。このことから 脂肪酸の水素同位体比は中国の鍾乳石の酸素同位体比と同様に、地球の歳差運動の周期による夏期の日射量変動に応答したシグナルを反映していると考えられ、陸域の古気候トレーサーとして有用であることが示唆された。 - Environmental influences over the last 16 ka on compound-specific delta C-13 variations of leaf wax n-alkanes in the Hani peat deposit from northeast China

日本は,オホーツク海,日本海,東シナ海といった「縁辺海」と「北太平洋」に面しており,太平洋からみると縁辺海と大洋を隔てる列島の一部である.さらにベーリング海を含めたこれら北太平洋の縁辺海は,自然科学的視点からみても,人間活動の場として見ても多くの共通性と特異性を持ち合わせている.これらのすべての縁辺海には,大河川や,規模は小さいが数多くの中・小河川が流れ込むことで,陸域の影響が大きく現れる.これら河川を通じて陸からの物質を受け取り,縁辺海内部で起こる様々な物理的プロセスと生物的・化学的反応を介して物質循環が活発に起こっている場所である.これらの各縁辺海は,陸域の影響を大洋に伝える間の緩衝作用も担うと同時に,大洋の影響も強く受け,物質的にも暖流(黒潮)や寒流(親潮)で結ばれている.縁辺海の自然科学的な機能を明らかにすることは,東シナ海,日本海,オホーツク海を経由して,北太平洋へと至る,長大な物質循環システムを理解することに繋がる.本稿では,環オホーツク域の「陸海結合システム」という概念に焦点を当て,環オホーツク域で進めてきた研究で残されている課題と,日本の周辺領域も含めたさらに大きなスケールで陸海結合システムをとらえるための研究展開について記す.Linkage between land and ocean is one of important issue for understanding earth system, and marginal seas are a key place for this linkage. The South China Sea, the East China Sea, the Japan Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea are marginal seas located on the north/west rim of the Pacific Ocean. These marginal seas received strong influence from the land via large and small scale river discharge, which include human influence. The marginal seashave high productivity and active biogeochemical cycles relative to those in oceanic regions, which are controlled by individual local processes, such as fresh water discharge, interior current systems, tidal mixing, local upwelling, continental shelves interactions, sea ice production/melting, and flows through straits. Further, recent studies indicated that some of the marginal seas strongly influence to the Pacific Ocean on physical and biogeochemicalprocesses. Therefore, clarifying roles of the marginal seas for linkage between land and oceanic region is one of the major remaining issue for understanding whole Pacific Ocean. 高緯度縁辺海を含む北太平洋亜寒帯域は生物生産が高いことで知られているが,オホーツク海やベーリング海東部を除く大部分は高栄養塩低クロロフィル(HNLC)海域と呼ばれ,鉄の供給不足により生物生産が制限されている海域でもある.近年の研究から高緯度縁辺海の大陸棚起源の鉄が北太平洋亜寒帯域における生物生産の鍵を握っている可能性が示唆された.一方,古海洋の研究からこの海域では気候変動に伴い海洋循環や生物生産が劇的に変動したことが明らかにされている.本稿では最終氷期から現在にいたるこの海域の生物生産の変遷を解説し,高緯度縁辺海から外洋への物質供給システムが外洋の生物生産に与えた影響について議論する.The subpolar North Pacific region is one of the highest productive area in the ocean. This region is alsocharacterized by high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) region where iron is a key micronutrient that limits primaryproduction in the ocean. Recent studies suggest that iron supply from the continental shelf in the Sea of Okhotskpotentially plays a substantial role in sustaining primary production in the subarctic North Pacific. On the other hand,paleoceanographic studies revealed that productivity has been dramatically changed in this region associated with theglacial-interglacial cycle. IODP323次航海において,ベーリング海南部で採取された海洋堆積物試料(U1341コア)を対象として,砕屑物のネオジム同位体・鉛同位体,C37:4アルケノン,珪藻群集解析を行った。これらの解析結果から,海氷の発達を伴う低塩分水が3.3Ma以降ベーリング海南部にまであったことを明らかにした。また,4.2Ma以降アラスカ山岳氷河の拡大が起こっている事も明らかになった。これらの結果は,少なくとも3.3Ma以降,ベーリング海からの淡水流入が北極海の淡水収支に大きな影響を与えていたことを強く示唆する。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - 古気候・古環境分野からの提案

古気候・古環境研究とは、広い時空間スケールにわたって宇宙-地球間や海洋-大気-陸域の各系間における多様なリンクについて知り、そこから地球表層環境の本質をえぐり出す研究分野である。多くのオープンクエスチョンの中でも「気候変動のドライビングフォース」・「物質循環」・「進化」に関する内容は関心が高い。このような問題の解決に地球化学が貢献すべき点は多く、新しい代替指標や分析法の開発、データの時空間スケールの高度化といったアプローチが必要不可欠である。研究推進には、労力と予算に加え、堆積物コア・アイスコア・サンゴなど古気候情報をもつ試料採取・分配をはじめとし、分野全体を網羅かつ統括した体制づくりが重要となる。大きな拠点を作り、微量安定同位体測定装置や目的に応じた各種質量分析計など先端的な大型装置を導入するといった大型予算を伴うやり方、古環境・古気候研究を進める既存のラボを有機的につなげたバーチャルラボラトリーの構築とネットワーク強化といった低予算型のやり方まで、複数のプランを練っておく必要がある。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - アイスコア解析から明らかになった十年規模の気候変動に対する炭素質エアロゾルのインパクト

本研究ではグリーンランドおよびカムチャツカで採取されたアイスコアの有機分子トレーサーの過去数百年の変動を解析することで、森林火災や土壌有機物ダスト起源の炭素質エアロゾルと十年規模の気候変動との関連を考察した。アイスコアの有機分子トレーサーの記録は北極振動や大西洋十年規模振動と同調した変動を示し、正の偏差でエアロゾル濃度が増大した。本研究によって大気中の炭素質エアロゾルの濃度は気候変動と密接に関連していることが明らかになった。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - カリフォルニア沖における融氷期のメタン放出イベント

Hill et al. (2006)は、ベーリング・アレレード期(B/A期)の海洋における急激なメタンガス放出量を見積もり、その量が全メタン放出量(170~185 Tg)の3分の1を占めることを推定している。このことが事実であれば、海洋からのメタン放出は地球環境に大きな影響を与えていた可能性が高い。しかしながら、直接的なメタン放出の証拠は得られていない。本研究ではカリフォルニア沖堆積物中のジプロプテンに着目した。ジプロプテンは、-55~-40‰ではメタン資化性菌に由来することが知られている。測定の結果、石油由来化合物のHopane類が増加しているB/A期に、ジプロプテンが-40‰と軽い値をとり、これはメタン放出の直接的な証拠になり得る。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - 網走湖堆積物中有機物分析による過去300年間の環境変化

本研究では、高い時間分解能をもつ網走湖堆積物コアを用いて、有機化合物組成の変動から過去約300年間の環境変化の解析を行うことを目的とした。主に植物プランクトンに由来する中鎖脂肪酸およびフィトールは、深さ56cmから現在に向かって濃度上昇が見られた。これは1950年代以降の牧畜をはじめてとした人間活動の増大に伴い植物プランクトンの生産が大きくなったことを示唆している。一方、陸上植物に由来するリグニンフェノールおよびクチン酸は、過去約300年前から現在にかけて緩やかな減少傾向が見られた。これも人間活動による森林伐採などを反映している可能性が考えられた。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - 完新世におけるオホーツク海およびベーリング海の表層水温と海氷の変化

本研究では,偏西風によりアジア大陸から輸送される陸起源有機物の起源域・輸送過程を明らかにすることを目的に、立山に2010年冬から2011年春にかけて堆積した積雪層中の陸上植物バイオマーカーの分子組成とその安定水素同位体比の測定を行った。立山の積雪試料中には、典型的な陸上植物バイオマーカーである炭素優位性を示すC25-C36ノルマルアルカン、C22-C28の脂肪族アルコール、C22-C28脂肪酸が主要な化合物として含まれており、その濃度は黄砂を含む層準で増加する(~8.4μg/l)傾向にあった。一方、C22-C28脂肪酸のδD値(平均–143‰)は、同時期の札幌降雪中のC22-C28脂肪酸に比べ最大65‰高く、その起源域の違いが示唆された。比較の為に、中国のレス堆積物中のC22–C28脂肪酸のδD値を測定したところ、–143‰と立山の降雪試料に近い値が得られ、中国内陸部のレス堆積物が、自由対流圏を介して北西太平洋域へ運搬される陸上植物バイオマーカーの主要な供給源となっていることが示唆された。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - C‐14を用いた別寒辺牛湿原における粒子態有機物の移行挙動研究

バイオマーカーの水素同位体比は水循環に関する情報を保持していると考えられ、過去の気候(降水量や気温、相対湿度等)を復元する手法として近年注目を集めている。同位体比から過去の水循環を復元する他の手法としては、年輪や泥炭中のセルロースの水素・酸素同位体比や鍾乳石の酸素同位体比などが挙げられる。年輪や鍾乳石といった古気候記録媒体は比較的年代を正確に決めることが出き、高時間分解能の解析が可能な点で優れている。しかしながら、それらに記録された同位体比は有効降水量だけでなく、過去における水蒸気の起源の変化によっても影響されるため、同位体記録が主にどの変動を反映しているかを識別することが困難という問題点も抱えている。本研究では中国の泥炭コア中の水生植物と陸上植物由来n-アルカンの水素同位体比の分析から、過去の相対湿度変動の復元を試みた。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - バイオマーカーを用いた古気候変遷と物質循環に関する地球化学的研究

海洋の有機物の約90%は大陸棚堆積物に沈着しているため,大陸棚は二酸化炭素の吸収や保存の場として炭素循環において重要な役割を担っている。しかし,陸と海洋の物質が複雑に混合し,化学・物理過程も複雑に作用するため,有機物の起源や堆積過程など不透明な部分が多い。 オホーツク海は北太平洋西部に位置する縁辺海であり,全面積のおよそ40%は大陸棚が占める。北西部にはアムール川が流れ込み,多量の陸起源物質が大陸棚に供給される一方で,生物生産も活発である。また,大陸棚上の物質を外洋へ輸送する東サハリン海流や高密度陸棚水の存在が報告されている。本研究では,オホーツク海表層堆積物中の全有機炭素含量(TOC),炭素同位体比(δ13C,Δ14C)およびリグニンフェノール総量(Λ)を測定し.オホーツク海表層堆積物における各項目の空間分布を示し,有機炭素の起源および堆積過程を検討した。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Japanese - アルケノン安定炭素同位体比による中新世後期および鮮新世の大気CO2濃度変動の復元

鮮新世における気候変動の鍵となるイベントは北半球の氷河化である。パナマ地峡の形成とそれに伴うグローバルな海洋循環の再編成がその要因として有力であると考えられているが、パナマ海峡の閉鎖の正確なタイミングはいまだ良くわかっておらず、海峡の閉鎖がもたらす気候インパクトはいまだ不明瞭である。また、もう一つの仮説として、北太平洋高緯度域表層の成層化による大気CO2濃度の減少が提唱されているが、大気CO2濃度と北半球の氷床発達の関連も十分に研究されていないのが現状である。我々は鮮新世初期から中期の気候状態および後期に起こった北半球の氷河化の要因を明らかにすることを目的として、東赤道太平洋(ODP1241)およびカリブ海(ODP999/1000)の堆積物コア中のバイオマーカーの定量、同位体分析から過去の水温、生物生産、大気CO2濃度の復元等を行った。講演ではこれら最新のデータを発表する。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN - 鮮新世における気候状態と北半球の氷床発達の要因の研究

植物の水素同位体比は主に利用する水の同位体比と湿度によっておおむね決まると考えられており、植物の水素同位体比は水循環に関した情報を保持していると考えられている。しかしながら地球化学分野における研究例は少なく、地球化学的トレーサーとしての性能は未知数である。北海道の雨龍研究林の泥川流域において森林・湿原と湿度の異なる環境においてそれぞれ土壌のサンプリングを行い陸上植物バイオマーカーのn-アルカンの水素同位体比を測定した。アルカンの水素同位体比は最大70パーミルの差がみられ、湿原のサンプルは森林のそれよりも一貫して低い値を示した。これは湿度環境の違いを反映したものと思われる。泥川河口の堆積物のアルカンの水素同位体比は森林と湿原の中間の値を示し、両サイトからの有機物の寄与を示唆する。この研究により有機物の水素同位体比測定は河川の有機物の起源推定に有用であることが示唆された。, GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN - Biomarker flux in sinking particle from the Sea of Okhotsk: Comparison between organic and inorganic tracers

本研究では有機分子の土壌ダストトレーサーである高分子ジカルボン酸と起源トレーサーである陸上高等植物由来の高分子脂肪酸の分子組成と安定炭素同位体比をグリーンランドアイスコア(Site-J)に適用し、過去450年間の土壌有機エアロゾルの沈積量とその起源の変動を復元した。Site-Jの高分子ジカルボン酸の濃度や高分子脂肪酸の平均炭素鎖(ACL)は過去450年間においてアイスコア中のベリリウム10(10Be)から復元した太陽放射量の変動と同調した数十年規模の変動を示し、有機物トレーサーから土壌ダストと太陽活動の関連を支持する結果がはじめて得られた。さらに脂肪酸ACLや安定炭素同位体比から太陽活動の変化に伴い土壌有機エアロゾルの起源が変化していたことが新たに示唆された。 - カリフォルニア沖堆積物におけるホパン組成の変動と古環境

カリフォルニア沖堆積物コア(ODP Leg 167, Hole 1017E)における炭化水素化合物の分析を行った。検出された主要な化合物は、アルカン、高分枝炭化水素(HBI)、ホパン類などであった。なかでもホパン類の組成は、現世堆積物で見いだされる組成と異なり、続成変化の進んだ熟成した組成を示した。これら熟成したホパン類の深度分布は、急激な気温上昇が起こった約1万5千年前に高い濃度を示した。この時代は、最終氷期に大規模化したカリフォルニア地域の高山氷河(タイオガ氷河)が融解した時代と一致する。したがって、これらホパン類の増加は、融解水がカリフォルニアの海岸線域に存在する石油生成帯を含むモントレー層を浸食した結果、増加したことを示唆している。 - 北西部北太平洋及びオホーツク海における最終氷期最寒期及び融氷期の表層水温変動

本研究はバイマーカーの水素同位体比の古環境研究への適用を目的として、琵琶湖堆積物コア中の植物起源脂肪酸の水素同位体比を測定した。復元された過去15万年間の脂肪酸の水素同位体比は~40パーミルもの変動を示し、その変動パターンは中国の鍾乳石の酸素同位体比と類似しており、北緯30度における夏の日射量の変動に同調していることが示された。このことから 脂肪酸の水素同位体比は中国の鍾乳石の酸素同位体比と同様に、地球の歳差運動の周期による夏期の日射量変動に応答したシグナルを反映していると考えられ、陸域の古気候トレーサーとして有用であることが示唆された。 - 北西太平洋表層堆積物中の陸上植物テルペノイドバイオマーカーの起源と輸送過程

陸上高等植物に由来するテルペノイド(HPT)は、植物の分類によって異なる構造を持つことが知られており、陸源物質の海洋への輸送の供給源や後背地を特定するための有用なバイオマーカーになり得ると考えられる。本研究では、レテン、カダレン、フリーデリンという3種類のHPTに着目して、北西太平洋の表層堆積物中での化合物分布を調べ、それぞれの化合物の起源と輸送過程について考察した。
分析の結果、レテンの分布からは後背地の植生の影響以外に、化石燃料を含む都市大気による影響がみられた。フリーデリンは北西太平洋日本沖で特に多く、陸から遠く離れた外洋域のコアからは総じて微量しか検出されなかったことから、主に河川経由で輸送されていると考えられる。一方でカダレンについては地域・海域による傾向はあまり見られなかったが、これはカダレンが主に大気経由で広範囲に輸送されていることを示唆している。

南極氷床が温暖化に対して敏感であることが明らかになり、温暖化の進行による海面上昇に対する危機感が高まっている。最新のIPCC特別報告書では将来の海面上昇予測が大幅に上方修正され、最も温暖化が進行するシナリオによれば300年後に海面が数メートル上昇するという。この上方修正は南極氷床融解量の見積もりの変更によるものであり、現在「温暖化が進行した場合にどの段階でどのような速度で南極氷床融解が進行しうるのか?」が海面上昇予測における核心的な問いになっている。氷床の応答時間は長く、その特性の本質的な理解にはより温暖な気候状態における長期間の氷床変動を調べる必要があり、今後の予測に関しては不確かさが非常に大きい。本研究では、国際深海科学掘削計画(IODP)において西南極ロス海で昨年掘削された最新の海底堆積物コアを用い、現在より全球平均気温が+1℃から+5℃(海面が+5から+40mまで上昇)温暖であった時代における南極氷床の融解過程を100年スケールの解像度で復元し、+5℃まで温暖化が進行する過程における南極氷床融解の特性を明らかにする。
中期鮮新世温暖期(約330-300万年前)および中期中新世気候最適期(約1600万年前前後の数万年間)を対象とする。最新の地球化学的手法を駆使し、海水温や南極氷床の変動の復元および氷床の融解地域の特定を行い、氷床の大規模かつ不可逆的な融解イベントが起こっていたのかどうか、もし起こっていたとしたらどの地域でどのように進行するのか、またそれを導く要因の解明を行う。

近年、南極では外洋の温暖な深層水が棚氷の下面に入り込むことで棚氷の融解/氷床の海への流出の原因となっていることが示されており、巨大氷冠を有する東南極ではトッテン氷河の融解にともなう海水準上昇が懸念されている。しかし、今後起こるとされている融解の加速を現在の海洋観測データだけで検証することは難しく、過去の融解と海洋変動の記録を合わせて評価する必要がある。第61次日本南極地域観測では、2019年11月から2020年3月に砕氷船「しらせ」を用いた採泥調査が実施され、世界に先駆けて東南極トッテン氷河の前縁域から海底コアが採取された。本研究では、海底コアから精密かつ多様な古環境情報を抽出することで、過去の気候変動によって引き起こされた氷河融解の影響を明らかにし、コンピュータによるモデル計算でそのメカニズムに関する理解を得ることを目的とする。調査の空白域である氷河前縁域の理解が進むことによって、南極氷床と海洋がかかわる気候変動・海水準変動の将来予測の精度向上が期待される。本年度は、採取された表層堆積物およびコアの基礎データを取得し、当該海域における堆積物の性状に関する分析を行った。表層堆積物に関しては、1編の論文が受理され、更に1編が執筆中である。今後、これらの情報をコアに応用して、過去の環境変動を検討する。また、モデル計算にかかる境界条件などについて検討を行った。様々な条件での実験と古環境データと比較することで、より確からしいメカニズムを検討する予定である。

琵琶湖南湖における細粒堆積物が安定的に供給される地点をさぐるために、約10地点においてボーリング調査を行なった。層相観察からは、どの地点でも表層近くほど粒径が大きく、高い含水率、植物片を多く含む傾向がみられた。深さ方向への粒径変化や含水率変化は、地点ごとの深度にばらつきがみられるものの変化傾向は同様であった。これらの結果を日本第四紀学会大会において発表を行なった。
層相変化、粒径変化、含水率変化の深度方向への変化傾向から、地点間対比が可能であり、そのことは南湖における年代による堆積速度変化の影響が示唆される。本研究のように1000年間程度の堆積物を扱う場合には、堆積年代を高精度に求める必要があり、100年程度の堆積物に有効な鉛210年代測定より古い時代を対象とした炭素年代測定の対象になる深度では、植物片などの含有がほぼない堆積物であった。別研究で行ったグレインソーターを使わない方法での花粉化石の濃集による炭素14年代測定では、近い層準で得られた植物化石による年代測定に比べて、誤差以上に古い年代値が得られた。このことは、花粉化石の濃集がソーターを使わない場合には、大きな年代誤差をうむことを示唆している。
湖底表層に近い層準における堆積物中の植物片の含有や、堆積物が有機質であることは、近年に顕著な水草繁茂が、過去にはほとんど見られなかったことを示唆している。このことは、予察的に行った表層付近のバイオマーカーの変化と整合的であり、深い深度の堆積物には植物片が見られないことが、分解によるものではないことを示唆している。
南湖の重点地点を決定してボーリングを行い、コアの層相記載、含水率測定を行い、分析用の試料分配を行なった。分析は、コア上部の鉛210年代測定も含めて、現在共同研究者が実施中である。

温室効果は地球表層の温度を決める重要な要素である。大気中CO2濃度の連続的な測定は1957年以降であり、それ以前のCO2濃度はアイスコア気泡中のガス測定により復元されている(Luthi et al., 2008など)。しかし、アイスコアの最古の氷は80万年前のものであり、それ以前のCO2濃度の精密復元は行われていない。
本研究では、ベンガル湾の国際深海掘削科学計画(IODP)U1445地点の堆積物コアに含まれる長鎖脂肪酸の安定炭素同位体比(δ13CFA)を測定し、600万年前以降のCO2濃度を約1700年解像度で復元する。得られたデータにもとづき、鮮新世における気候感度を推定し、温暖期におけるCO2濃度と全球気温の関係を検討する。さらに、過去600万年間のCO2濃度と海洋深層水温度・気温・氷床量変動との関係から、CO2濃度変動の原因を考察し、CO2と気候の相互作用を解明する。
脂肪酸同位体比測定は全3200試料が終了した。過去80万年間のCO2濃度復元値は、アイスコアのCO2濃度およびU1446地点でのCO2濃度復元値と良い一致を示し、当研究で用いているCO2濃度復元手法をU1445地点に適用することが妥当であることが確かめられた。国際深海掘削科学計画(IODP)U1445地点での船上分析により得られた生層序と非破壊分析の結果に基づき仮の年代モデルを作成した。
U1446地点で得られたCO2濃度変動記録と過去150万年間の降水量変動を比較し、δ13CFA変動の2-10%は降水量変動により、 78%がCO2濃度変動でより説明可能であることを示した。CO2濃度と降水量の変動がインド東部のC3/C4植生に与える影響を植生モデルを用いて検討した。このモデルの結果からも、δ13CFA変動は基本的にCO2変動を反映していることが明らかになった。

最終氷期における東南極氷床の最大拡大域と,その後の氷床融解過程を復元するため,東南極のトッテン氷河沖,ケープダンレー,およびリュツォホルム湾で採取した深海堆積物の高精度放射性炭素年代測定とAuthigenicベリリウム同位体比を分析することで,東南極沿岸地域における氷床→棚氷→海氷環境への変遷過程の復元を試みた.とくに,有孔虫化石の酸素・炭素同位体分析から,過去の周極深層水(Circumpolar deep water: CDW)の流入の復元が可能であることが明らかになり,今後氷床融解とCDW流入との関係を解明するための糸口を掴んだ.
また,ノルウェー,スウェーデン,デンマーク,およびアメリカのチーム,さらにはスイス・トルコの研究グループとの共同研究も展開し,現地調査と最新手法を用いた年代測定を実施しており,これらを総合して,東南極の広範囲から多くの氷床変動データが得られるようになった.とくに中央ドロンニングモードランドでは,表面露出年代測定と高精度氷床モデルシミュレーションによる再現から約9000-6000年前頃に東南極氷床が急激に高度を減じたことが明らかになった.この結果は,現在論文として投稿中である.このように,分担者による固体地球の粘弾性変形(GIA)モデルシミュレーションだけでなく,氷床モデルや海洋モデル研究者との共同研究関係も確立するなど,研究コミュニティーを他分野・多国籍メンバーに拡大することで,重要な論文執筆につなげることができた.

本プロジェクトの目的は産業革命から現在までの高確度エアロゾルデータベースの構築とアイスコアの新規分析手法から人新世の大気環境復元を高度化することである。最初の目的のために、グリーンランド南東ドームでの250mのアイスコア掘削した。2020年度では、コロナ禍でデンマークやグリーンランドは通年レベル3の渡航禁止下であり、2021年度(本年度)に計画を延期していた。2021年度もデンマークやグリーンランドは通年レベル3の渡航禁止下であり続けたが、4―7月に困難な状況のもとで掘削を決行し、250mのアイスコアの取得に成功した。11月にアイスコアが輸入され、2021年度末現在、そのアイスコアの初期解析を実施している。
第2の目的達成のために、すでに本プロジェクトで公開済のエアロゾルデータを参考にしつつ、1)衛星による近過去の雲量との統計的解析(主担当:藤田)、2)氷晶核能測定装置の開発、3)ダストデータの高精度解読、4)電子顕微鏡による硝酸塩組成の復元(主担当:大野)、5)過酸化水素分析法の確立(主担当:服部)、6)硫酸エアロゾル中の酸素同位体比を用いた大気酸化力の復元(主担当:服部)、7)メタンスルホン酸による海氷面積・海洋生物活動の復元(主担当:的場)、8)過去の硫酸エアロゾルの粒径復元、9)ラマン分析によるアンモニウム塩・硝酸塩の組成復元、10)放射光によるカルシウムエアロゾルの化合物同定のなどの分析に着手してきた。
このうち、硫酸エアロゾル中の酸素同位体比を用いた大気酸化力の復元から、1980年以降の二酸化硫黄排出規制にもかかわらず、硫酸エアロゾルの減少が鈍化しているメカニズムを解明し、論文にまとめた。アンモニアなどのアルカリ性物質の増加による大気の酸性度低下が原因で、大気化学過程が変化し、結果的に硫酸生成効率が上昇することを突きとめた。今後の北極域の環境変動予測に重要な成果である。

The development of a purified method for diatom shells and its oxygen isotope analysis, and the establishment of an automated radiolarian analysis technique using AI deep learning, have successfully brought new developments to paleoceanographic studies in the Southern Ocean. The validity of precise age contrast between marine sediment cores and Antarctic ice cores using dust indices was examined, and it was clarified that local biases such as regional nature of dust variability and contamination of volcaniclastic debris should be fully taken into account in the Indian sector in the Southern Ocean. We reconstructed surface and sub-surface seawater temperature variations in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean over a wide area, and found that short-term variations are linked to the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), and that marine isotope stages 5e and 9 have significantly higher surface water temperatures than other interglacial stages.

We have analyzed sediment cores retrieved from the Bering Sea to reconstruct the glacial to deglacial changes in the ocean ventilation, particularly for the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW). Source regions of the NPIW have switched from the Bering Sea during glaciation to the Okhotsk Sea during the Holocene. Millennial-scale oscillations of NPIW ventilation were suggested during the last deglacial period between 20,000 and 10,000 years ago.

During the Last Interglacial, when global mean temperatures were +1 degree C higher than pre-industrial levels, sea levels were estimated to have been +6-9 m higher than the present level. A better understanding of the dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet during the Last Interglacial provides important insights for predicting sea-level changes in future warming scenarios. In this study, we reconstructed the ice sheet dynamics of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin Ice Sheet (WBIS) during the Last Interglacial based don analyses of neodymium isotope and beryllium in a marine sediment core (GC1407) collected near East Antarctica to reconstruct the dynamics of WBIS during the Last Interglacial. We found, for the first time, that significant WBIS retreat occurred not only in the early part of the Last Interglacial but also in the late stage of the Last Interglacial.

We collected a piston core sediment of ~8.5 m long at ~700 m water depth from the Gulf of Alaska. The 14C measurements of planktonic foraminifera represented the sediments record the past ~17 kyr ago. We obtained non-destructive XRF core scanner element data, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes of bulk sediments, planktonic foraminifera d13C and d18O, biomarker data, and IRD data semi-quantitatively estimated by image analysis, and we found that C37:4 alkenone data clearly highlight an enormous meltwater peak at the YD that was not yet well known previously. We plan to publish this data in coming June 2020, and the other data set obtained by this reserach will be published later.

Sediment cores were collected from the northwestern Pacific near Japanese archipelago to reconstruct ocean circulation such as the Kuroshio Current and the North Pacific Intermediate Water since the last glaciation. Reconstructed paleo sea-surface temperature (SST) suggest that small latitudinal SST gradient in the glacial Kuroshio region without significant southward migration of the Kuroshio front. Benthic foraminiferal stable carbon isotope record showed increased vertical nutrient gradient in the glacial western North Pacific. Past regional marine reservoir ages of the western North Pacific were constrained based on age offset between tephra ages and planktic foraminiferal radiocarbon ages. Reconstructed marine reservoir ages were not very old but almost comparable to the pre-bomb values even during deglaciation.

The Southeastern Greenland Dome (SE-Dome) has both a high elevation and a high accumulation rate (1.01 m w.e. yr-1), which are suitable properties for reconstructing past environmental changes with a high time resolution. For this study, we measured the major ion fluxes in a 90-m ice core drilled from the SE-Dome region in 2015, and present the records of annual ion fluxes from 1957 to 2014. From 1970 to 2010, the trend of non-sea-salt (nss) SO42- flux decreases, whereas that for NH4+ increases, tracking well with the anthropogenic SOx and NH3 emissions mainly from North America. The result suggests that these fluxes reflect histories of the anthropogenic SOx and NH3 emissions. In contrast, the decadal trend of NO3- flux differs from the decreasing trend of anthropogenic NOx emissions.

We generated a 6000-year long charcoal record from three different sites in northwestern Borneo that shows large fluctuation in charcoal abundance. Two different sites at 460 km distance show common abundance peaks, suggesting that climate change regulated wild fire frequency. The abundance peak appeared every several hundred years, showing a 560-year periodicity. The peaks correspond well to those of solar irradiance and the frequency of El Nino-induced flooding in an Ecuadorian lake from 4000 to 1000 year BP, but the correspondence is not significant and even reverse in other periods. There is no clear correspondence with the East Asian summer and winter monsoon records. We suggest that multi-centennial scale changes in the frequency of El Nino was a factor controlling precipitation in northwestern Borneo and the frequency of wildfires in the peatlands.

The object of this project was reconstructing the past interaction between large-scale land-use change and river discharge or coastal marine ecosystem through combination of analyzing sediment core at lagoon, old references, governmental statistics or numerical models. It may helpful to understanding the dynamics of aquatic systems after areal reclamation or constructing the direction for reconstruction after large-scale development.
We found that farmland drastically increased after the World War Two by analyzing the long-term change of land-use in Akkeshi lake watershed (Hokkaido, Japan) where is the study area. We also examined the freezing area among inlets, covering area by sea-fog which dropping evaporation or transpiration. Reconstruction of plankton flora which having shells by DNA extraction, which running with age estimation, showed several harmful species that causing shellfish poisoning in the present has been inhabiting since a long time ago through sediment core analysis.

The Earth has undergone a dramatic climate transition from hothouse to icehouse conditions occurred during the past 10 million years. It is important to understand cause of the long-term glaciation for better understanding of long-term stability of ice sheet yet the causes of the climate transition is still uncertain. In this study we reconstructed pale oceanographic changes and pCO2 from marine sediment cores collected from different parts of the ocean. We found that a dramatic global cooling (late Miocene global cooling) and marked decline of CO2 concentration occurred several million years before the intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG). This suggests that CO2 played a substantial role in the long-tern climate evolution overt the past 10 million years.

In this project, we studied chemical compositions of atmospheric aerosols from East Asia and its outflow regions in the western North Pacific at levels of carbon, nitrogen, organic molecules including carboxylic acids, isotopes and inorganic ions. We found a decline of sulfate concentrations after 2006 due to the sulfur emission control in China, but organic aerosols showed a continuous increase from 2001 to 2013. This increase of organics is largely involved with the emissions of biomass burning of agriculture wastes such as wheat straw in China and other Asian countries. Those trends are consistent with an increase in the biomass-burning tracers such as levoglucosan in the marine aerosols.
Hygroscopic properties of aerosol particles were measured for remote marine aerosols. We found that growth factors of marine aerosols are decreased when Asian dusts (Kosa) are transported over the ocean due to the formation of water-insoluble calcium oxalate in spring.

We established the method of oxygen isotope analysis for cellulose in plant remains in peats. We isolated different plant remains in each sample, degrade lignin, and measured oxygen isotopes of extracted cellulose. The oxygen isotopic ratio of Sphagnum cellulose shifts lighter from 3000 to 2000 years ago, suggesting changes in rain oxygen isotopes. The difference between Sphagnum and plan remains were maximum at 2000 years ago, suggesting minimum in relative humidity. These results are consistent with environmental changes reconstructed from pollen assemblages.

Late Neogene paleoceanographic changes in the North Pacific were reconstructed using drilling sediments to understand the role of the Panama and Bering gateways in the late Neogene climate changes. We found major cooling event at ~2 Ma in the subarctic Pacific based on alkenone SST and siliceous microfossils. And we suggest a reorganization of ocean circulation during late Miocene based on carbon isotopic compositions of epibenthic foraminifera. We published 11 papers and submitted a drilling proposal to IODP based on this study.

Atmospheric aerosols, collected from China, Korea, Mongolia, India and Japan as well as coastal and remote islands, have been studied for organic chemical compositions. The aerosols from Manshan, 40 km north of Beijing, showed higher concentrations of dicarboxylic acids such as oxalic acid than those from Beijing, suggesting a secondary (photochemical) production of water-soluble organic acids during atmospheric transport. Indian aerosols from New Delhi showed very high concentrations of low molecular weight diacids. Aerosols from Ulaanbaatar were studied for the hygroscopicity, indicating that the growth factor (Gf=1.22) is close to that of biomass burning aerosols.

本年度の前期は分析と観測を中心に、後期は論文執筆活動を中心に行った。
1.実験分析ガスクロマトグラフ/質量分析計によるリグニンフェノール測定の手法を確立させ、オホーツク海および、アムール川や北海道河川の観測により採取した土壌、堆積物、懸濁粒子中のリグニンフェノールの測定を行った。アムール川とオホーツク海の試料の結果から、オホーツク海堆積物中の陸起源有機物の寄与が推定され、アムール川によって供給された陸起源の有機物がサハリン海流によってサハリン南部の海域まで輸送され、堆積していることが示唆された。北海道の主要河川の懸濁粒子中のリグニンフェノール分析から、河川によるリグニン組成が明瞭に異なることが示された。これは流域の植生や土地利用形態を反映していると考えられ、リグニン組成が河川により輸送される有機物の起源を推定するのに有効な手法であることが示唆された。
2.観測イギリスのグラスゴー大学との共同研究で、北海道の湖の観測計画を立案し、2008年6月に観測を行った。その結果、8つの湖から湖底堆積物を採取する事に成功した。8月にはロシア、中国との共同プロジェクトであるアムールオホーツクプロジェクトによるアムール河口観測が行われ、日本側のメンバーとして参加し、河川水、河床堆積物、懸濁粒子等のサンプリングに成功した。これらの試料については、今後、共同研究者と協力して様々な分析を進めて行く予定である。
3.論文執筆これまでの研究成果を論文にとしてまとめ(論文5本)、それらは全て査読付きの国際誌に投稿した。
