Wetlands play an essential role in the global greenhouse gas budget via carbon dioxide sequestration as well as methane emission. In recent decades, solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been recognized as a remotely sensed proxy of gross primary productivity (GPP), which generates substrates for methane production. To examine the suitability of SIF for estimation of these two fluxes, we conducted ground tower‐based SIF observation with an ultrafine‐resolution spectroradiometer in conjunction with eddy covariance measurement in a cool‐temperate bog. The daily SIF retrieved in the red (687 nm) and far‐red (760 nm) bands (SIFred and SIFfar‐red, respectively) increased nonlinearly with GPP and linearly with absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR). The relatively weak correlation between apparent SIF yield (ΦSIF = SIF/APAR) and light use efficiency implied that both APAR and plant physiology constrained the SIF emission in this wetland. The SIFred/SIFfar‐red ratio showed a significant negative relationship with vegetation greenness indices, and the similar seasonal variation in SIFred and SIFfar‐red indicated that the SIFred reabsorption effect only weakly influenced the SIFred–GPP relationship. Episodic temporal reduction in the water table did not distinctly influence SIF and ΦSIF. Estimation of the methane emission rate was subtly improved by incorporating SIF, which was substituted for GPP as the methanogenesis substrate, in a multivariable regression analysis together with two environmental factors: soil temperature and water table depth. This study illustrates the potential of both SIFred and SIFfar‐red to monitor GPP and to predict methane emission in wetlands. - Modified SEIB-DGVM enables simulation of masting in a temperate forest

Data assimilation, which minimizes the difference between modeled and observed statuses statistically along with objective criteria, has been applied frequently for terrestrial biosphere models in recent years. This approach enables highly accurate estimation, gap-filling of missing or sparsely distributed data, optimizing model parameters and initial state. The Markov chain Monte Carlo method is a useful data assimilation approach because of its relative simplicity in program cording. However, this approach has been applied mainly for plot-scale simulation, which does not have any lateral interaction with other distant plots and does not require a large computational load. Ensemble Kalman filter, which has advantages in the simplicity of coding and the affordability of computational load despite the unavoidable reduction in the numbers of assimilated data points and optimized parameters, has been demonstrated recently in many field sites. The adjoint (4D-VAR) method enables us to estimate the uncertainty of parameters chronologically forward and backward with moderate computational load, but we also need to find a way to avoid the problems induced by the non-linearity of terrestrial biosphere models. In addition to the expectation for high accuracy simulations, those data assimilation approaches would also offer great potential for producing useful bi-products, e.g. objective analysis data sets, and supplemental evidence of the changes in physiological and ecological responses to environmental variations by looking at the chronological variation in their responses. 青海_-_チベット高原の北東部に位置する、中国青海省海北地区の高山草原生態系(カヤツリグサ科C3草本が優占)を対象とし、渦相関法を用いた大気-生態系間のCO2交換の測定(2001年8月_から_2002年12月)と、生態系炭素循環モデルSim-CYCLEを用いた推定(1981-2000年)によって、異なる時間スケールでのCO2交換と環境要因の関係を明らかにし、温暖化に伴うCO2交換の変化を予測した。
植物生長期(5-9月)の日中のCO2吸収量は、LAI(葉面積指数)の季節変化と、光(PPFD)の日々の変化量に依存していた。一方、夜間のCO2放出量、すなわち生態系呼吸量Reは、土壌温度に対しては正の相関を示し、土壌水分に対しては負の関係を示した。実測値から年間CO2吸収量は78.5 gC m-2となり、他の高山帯とほぼ同等の小さな値であった。世界の様々な生態系における、年平均気温とCO2吸収量の関係から見て、本生態系の制限要因は温度であることが示唆された。
Sim-CYCLEを用いたCO2交換の変動実験の結果では、総一次生産GPPと生態系純生産NEPの年々推移は同調しており、変化幅は±70 g C m-2yr-1程度であった。一方、Reは変動幅が小さかった。NEPは、温度の上昇に対して、緩やかな負の関係を示したが、有意ではなかった。気候変化に対する応答ポテンシャルを調べるモデル感度実験では、年平均気温を5℃上昇させたとき、GPPは応答が速く、20年程度で定常に達したが、Reはそれよりも反応が緩やかであった。これによると、ある程度の温暖化は植物生産力を増加させる可能性があることを示唆した。次に、年平均温度を±10℃の間で強制的に変化させたモデル実験では、5℃までの年平均気温の上昇はGPPを増加させるが、それ以上の上昇は逆に現在よりも値を低下させた。ある程度の温暖化は、本生態系をCO2の吸収源として維持させるが、温暖化が顕著になると、放出源になる可能性が考えられた。, THE ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN - B165 地球環境変化予測のための地球システム統合モデルの開発(気候システムII)

マレーシア国ヌグリ・スンビランのパソ保護林の低地フタバカキ林において、9月に太陽光誘起クロロフィル蛍光観測のための高分解能分光放射計QEproおよび中分解能分光放射計FLAME-S、光ファイバーケーブル、全天候型ガラスドーム、ファイバースプリッター、電磁シャッター等の機器を、樹幹上52m(上向きコサインコレクタ有効FOV144°・下向きコサインコレクタ有効FOV144°・北向き斜め下45度FOV25°)と林床上14m(上向きコサインコレクタ有効FOV144°・下向きコサインコレクタ有効FOV144°)の位置に設置した。コロナ禍以降初めてのパソ保護林訪問であり、渦相関法フラックス観測装置や、中解像度分光放射計MS-700のメンテナンスも行った。観測開始後に定期的な落雷や停電によって、パソコンがフリーズや帯電することで度々観測が滞った。9月-3月までの間で、総計で数ヶ月におよぶ観測は成功したが、2月ごろの停電は商用電源の切断によるものであり、太陽光誘起クロロフィル蛍光の観測はそこからストップした。一方で渦相関方測定装置は、太陽電池パネルによる電源供給を行なっているものであり、それらは計測されている様子であった。また陸域生態系物質循環モデルVISIT-SIFと、森林3次元放射伝達モデルFLiES-SIFに関しては、モデルコード整備を行なった。さらにテストとして日本国内の森林生態系において、すでに観測された地上SIFおよび渦相関法GPPを利用したモデル実験の準備を行なった。

2022年度はコロナ禍が一定の収束を見せたため、人数を限定したうえで、9月5、6日に東京大学弥生キャンパスで対面ありでの全体会合を開催した。計画班の主要メンバーを中心とした参加者であったが、オンラインも活用することで領域全体での成果共有や意見交換を効率的に実施することができた。総括班はプログラム編成や会場準備などで主体的な役割を果たした。領域内での各班の実施内容を共有するため、隔週ペースでオンラインセミナーを実施した。第2、第4火曜日の16時から2名による発表と質疑を行うことで、若手研究者には成果発表を行う機会となった。また、特定のトピックを取り上げたディスカッションの回を設けることで、領域内での自由活発な議論を促すことができた。例えばゲノムから生物圏までのスケールをどうつなげるかは、統合生物圏科学を標榜する本研究領域の本質に関わる議論を行うことができた。ニュースレターを作成し、各班の活動や成果についてとりまとめ、領域ホームページから配布することで成果普及に努めた。Slackを活用した情報交換やファイル共有を進めた。B02班により、東京湾における観測キャンペーンを実施し、総括班予算から実施支援を行った。7月より参加した公募研究班の活動を支援するため、セミナーでの研究計画紹介などを行っていただき、その後の計画研究との共同研究を促進した。長期生態系研究などの国際活動に参加するメンバーからもセミナー等で情報提供を行ってもらい、本研究領域の成果を国際的な場へアピールするための方策を議論した。

陸域生態系モデルは、令和5年度までに単体VISITにテスト導入した光合成の温度とCO2に対する順化式(温度: Kumarathunge et al., 2019, CO2: Poorter et al., 2021)をMIROC-ES2L内のVISITeに移植した。その際に、Monsi & Saekiによる群落光合成式を、Farquhar von Caemer Ballの生化学モデルに変更し、光合成速度の時空間分布が変更前からそれほど変わらないことを確認した。そして炭素収支を平衡させるためのスピンアップ実験を数百年間に渡って行った。リン循環については、令和5年度までに単体VISITに導入した式を、MIROC-ES2L内VISITeに移植をし、リン酸循環が安定して計算されるかを計算ステップごとに確認するとともに、窒素およびリンが光合成にどのように影響を与えるかについて、既往の研究から検討した。
海洋生態系モデル開発では、動植物プランクトン各1変数のFlexPFTのチューニングを完了し、全炭酸やアルカリ度といった炭素循環プロセスを結合した。海洋のBGCスーパーサイト:K2、HOT、BATSで得られた基礎生産、クロロフィル量等と比較解析し、従来のモデルに比べ再現性が飛躍的に向上したことが確認された。
全体としては地球システムモデルの改良および実験に関し、北大農学部にて開催のC02班会議に参加、議論を行った。C02班の研究開発のため、博士学生を海洋研究開発機構に招致し、地球シミュレータ上での地球システムモデル実行方法の習熟補助を行った。

アジアの作物統計資料を収集したのちに、コメ収量のデジタル化・異常値の排除を行い、それらと気候モード指標(NiNO3, PDO, IOD等)との比較を一部行った。また気候データ(平均気温、最高・最低気温、降水量、雲量等)は、イーストアングリア大学CRU再解析データのものを利用し、対象国の地方・州・県などの行政区分に、HYDE3.2土地利用データから得られた水田分布を重み付けした任意の地域平均データを作成した。
国ごとにデータの欠測期間と、行政区分の変遷が異なるために、作物統計データの質・量が高い韓国、タイ等からスタートして、上記気候モードや気象データとの相関係数や、収量増加の停滞現象の把握を行なった。その結果、これまで行なってきた日本のように、2000年以降での停滞や気候モードとの関係が明瞭には出ていないことがわかった。
またモデルによるデータ同化実験のための地域ごとの入力気象データをNOAA-CIRES-DOE 20CRv3(米国海洋大気庁20世紀再解析モデル)から上記CRUと同様に、国ごとの行政区分による水田作付け分布データで重み付けし作成した。コメの農事暦データ(1期作・2期作・3期作および移植日・出穂日・収穫日)を、RiceAtlas等から収集した。データ同化によるパラメータ最適化は、面的にするよりも、行政区分ごとに気象データを作って、それによる地域平均的なパラメータ変遷を遡ることにした。さらに歴史的に度重なる凶作がおこっていたことがわかっているインド地域に対して、MATCRO-Riceでの面的な収量計算の準備を行なった。

The estimation on the changes in carbon dynamics, vegetation shift, and aerosol emissions induced by wild fire was conducted in Siberia with combined approaches of satellite observation and terrestrial ecosystem model. The spatially explicit individual based global dynamic vegetation model (SEIB-DGVM) was added the widely recognized fire module SPITFIRE, and was validated with satellite data, and was used for future prediction. SEIB-DGVM-SPITFIRE showed a good correlation with satellite fire and CO2 emission data on spatial extent. It predicted the gradual growth in fire occurrence and accompanied green house gases (GHGs) and aerosol emissions under any of RCP climate scenarios till 2100.

Analysis on the farmer's accounting diary showed us that there has been the reduction in rice grain production in large famines (Tenpo: 1832-1839 and Tenmei: 1783-1786). For modeling study, we modified the structure of rice production model, and could optimize the eco-physiological parameters assumed to be used in the end of Edo era. The input climate data were also concatenated to be used for representation of modern time rice production.

Solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) has been recognized to be a strong proxy to represent the photosynthesis at ecosystem-level simultaneously. To maximize the advantage of SIF, multiscale observations have been conducted, and discovered its behaviors under various environmental conditions, like as light condition. Additionally, the 3 dimensional radiative transfer model for SIF was developed and validated in field site. Those would give us a more chance to explorer the ecosystem level photosynthesis over wide area via SIF.

The solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence has been expected to play an important role on accurately estimating the ecosystem-level photosynthesis, equals to CO2 uptake, simultaneously on wide spatial scale. To improve the availability of SIF for this purpose, 1) the development of ground-based observational database and synthetic analysis of data, 2) the representation of ecosystem-level SIF and photosynthesis by 3-dimensional radiative transfer model, and 3) the representation of ecosystem-level SIF and photosynthesis by process-based ecosystem model in co-operation by international collaborators. The developed database and models are anticipated to be used effectively in the international community via the model intercomparison projects.

Carbon dioxide assimilation by the terrestrial plant photosynthesis is one of the major compartment in the global carbon budget. There is still a great uncertainty in the global photosynthesis evaluation. Recently, the emerging satellite monitoring technology has enabled to derive the sun Induced Fluorescence (SIF) of terrestrial plant from space. These data have started to use in the model validation or constraints. In this study, we developed a new precise radiation transfer model for the SIF simulation in forests. The developed model was evaluated in several forest sites in Japan and interior Alaska, USA.

Under the high pressure on the further improvement of food production, there is a need for investigating the influence by climate change on crop production for the past time )IPCC, 2014). The insight from the historical analysis will also help our future plan on food security. Therefore, we have made the comprehensive investigation on the influence by climate change on rice production via the combination of aggregation of agricultural statistical data for 110 years for each prefecture, and collection of experiment data of crop breeding test, and crop model simulation.

Strong representation of Solar-Induced Fluorescence (SIF) for the ecosystem-level photosynthesis activity has been confirmed by satellite studies. To examine the potential contribution of SIF emission from lower part of tree ecosystem to total ecosystem SIF emission, the downward SIF from tree canopy and upward SIF from understory were
calculated from the spectrum data in a cool temperate forest in in central Japan (36°08′N, 137°25′E, 1420 m a.s.l.) as well as the upward SIF from canopy top, and the fractional ratios among them are compared on half-hourly and daily bases. We also have conducted the new measurement of SIF by high resolution spectroradiometer at multiple height (0, 8, 14, 18m).

We aimed to investigate the carbon cycle processes in cool-temperate deciduous forest ecosystems in changing environments. Responses of leaf photosynthesis and its phenology, and soil respiration to rising temperature due to climate change were examined by open-field warming experiments in the studied forest. Development of optical remote sensing technique for canopy observations, and advancement of process-based simulation model were also conducted for spatio-temporal scaling analyses of photosynthesis and respiration in current and future environments. Multi-year observations of CO2 flux by eddy-covariance technique revealed that warmer spring induced earlier leaf expansion and hence higher photosynthesis at forest level, which were also supported experimentally by the canopy warming experiment and model predictions. The higher air temperature in autumn was suggested to lead higher ecosystem respiration, which was also supported by the soil warming experiment and a model analysis.

Terrestrial carbon budget in Asia was analyzed using network data of site observation (e.g. AsiaFlux), remote sensing data, and terrestrial ecosystem models. Data-driven terrestrial CO2 fluxes were estimated using AsiaFlux observation and remote sensing data with a machine learning method. The data-driven estimation of CO2 fluxes were further evaluated with outputs from multiple terrestrial biosphere models, and we found consistent interannual variations and gradual increases in CO2 sink in Siberia. We also found large model-data differences in tropical Asia region.

A terrestrial ecosystem model, VISIT (Vegetation Integrative SImulator for Trace gases), was developed to retrieve atmosphere-ecosystem biogeochemical interactions through trace-gas exchange, and applied to global change studies. Model analyses were conducted concerning spatial patterns and temporal variability of greenhouse gas fluxes produced in land ecosystems. An integrated model of atmosphere-ecosystem exchange of trace gases including biogenic volatile organic compounds, methane emission and oxidation, biomass burning emission, was developed and used to integrative assessment of terrestrial carbon budget. Model validation was conducted at several sites, at which flux observation was conducted.

A terrestrial ecosystem model was developed for East Asia with high resolution (0.5°×0.5°grid size). Results were compared with nationwide population density and human activities. It was clarified that P/R ratio has become lower than 1.0 at moment in Japan, China and India resulting an increase in emission of green house gases in the 21 century.
During this three years the field observations together with the stable isotope methods, satellite remote sensing, and modeling were conducted simultaneously to refine the above mentioned conclusions.

東アジアの炭素循環を陸域生態系モデルによってより現実に近く再現するため、パラメータ調整の際に観測データを取り込むデータ同化手法を利用し、実際に1979-2003年の陸域炭素循環を推定した。得られた炭素フラックスは、妥当な分布を示し、さらに、CO_2上昇による施肥効果を考慮した場合、しなかった場合よりも、誤差が小さく、データ同化によって、東アジア地域で、モデルの推定精度が向上する可能性が示唆された。

アジア各地で直達・散乱成分別の光合成有効放射の長期観測を実施し,雲やエアロゾルの変動が光合成有効放射の直達・散乱成分比に与える影響を詳細に解析すると共に,散乱成分が大きい条件下で,光合成量が増加するメカニズムを三次元放射伝達モデル+光合成モデルによる解析で詳細に明らかにした。
