Frontiers in Psychology, 16, Frontiers Media SA, 16 Feb. 2026
Scientific journal, In this article, we survey contemporary works on the phenomenology of deliberation and discuss its relevance to the philosophical problems of free will. We first articulate the debate between compatibilist and incompatibilist interpretations of (leeway and source) freedom in the phenomenology of deliberation (Section 2). Next, we examine this issue in light of relevant psychological studies of the folk experiences of deliberation (Section 3), followed by a discussion of four general methodological problems in the investigation of the phenomenology of deliberation (Section 4): (i) the problem of heterogeneity, (ii) the problem of cognitive penetration, (iii) the problem of reliability, and (iv) the problem of relevance. We conclude that these problems suggest the need for the reconsideration of experimental methods and the role of the phenomenology of deliberation in the free will debate.

Frontiers in Psychology, 15, Frontiers Media SA, 22 Apr. 2024
Scientific journal, This article critically examines the experimental philosophy of free will, particularly the interplay between ordinary individuals’ compatibilist and incompatibilist intuitions. It explores key insights from research studies that propose “natural compatibilism” and “natural incompatibilism”. These studies reveal a complex landscape of folk intuitions, where participants appear to exhibit both types of intuitions. Here, we examine error theories, which purport to explain the coexistence of apparently contradictory intuitions: the Affective Performance Error hypothesis, the “Free Will No Matter What” hypothesis, the Bypassing hypothesis, and the Intrusion hypothesis, and the article explores the cognitive errors that could shape individuals’ inconsistent perceptions of free will. We then explore three possibilities regarding folk intuitions: most individuals may hold either compatibilist or incompatibilist intuitions, both simultaneously, or neither. Our aim is to deepen the understanding of the complex dynamics of intuitions about free will, and we close with suggestions for future studies in experimental philosophy.

  • Epistemic Libertarian Paternalism
    Kengo Miyazono
Erkenntnis, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 18 Mar. 2023
    Scientific journal, Abstract

Libertarian paternalism is a weak form of paternalism that recommends nudges rather than bans, restrictions, or other strong interventions. Nudges influence people’s choice by modifying contextual factors (the “choice architecture”). This paper explores the possibility of an epistemic analogue of libertarian paternalism. What I call “epistemic libertarian paternalism” is a weak form of epistemic paternalism that recommends “epistemic nudges” rather than stronger paternalistic interventions. Epistemic nudges influence people’s beliefs and judgments by modifying contextual factors (the “epistemic choice architecture”). The main aim of this paper is to defend epistemic libertarian paternalism from the “irrationality problem”, which I take to be the most urgent problem for epistemic libertarian paternalism; given how epistemic nudges work (i.e. they typically co-opt psychological biases), nudged beliefs are irrational. In response to the irrationality problem, I admit that nudged beliefs are often (not always, though) irrational, but insist that there are conditions in which epistemic nudging can be justifiable nonetheless. I will propose two conditions that are jointly sufficient for justifiable epistemic nudging: “Veridicality Condition” (which says that nudged beliefs are more likely to be true than non-nudged beliefs) and “Not-More-Irrationality Condition” (which says that nudged beliefs are not more likely to be irrational than non-nudged beliefs).

English, Scientific journal, The gap between the Markov blanket and ontological boundaries arises from the former's inability to capture the dynamic process through which biological and cognitive agents actively generate their own boundaries with the environment. Active inference in the free-energy principle (FEP) framework presupposes the existence of a Markov blanket, but it is not a process that actively generates the latter.
Yuichi Yamashita; Keisuke Suzuki

Scientific journal, Sinhababu's Humean Nature contains many interesting and important ideas, but in this short commentary I focus on the idea of vivid representations. Sinhababu inherits his idea of vivid representations from Hume's discussions, in particular his discussion of calm and violent passions. I am sympathetic to the idea of developing Hume's insight that has been largely neglected by philosophers. I believe that Sinhababu and Hume are on the right track. What I do in this short commentary is to raise some questions about the details. The aim of asking these questions is not to challenge Sinhababu's proposal (at least his main ideas), but rather to point at some interesting issues arising out of his proposal. The questions are about (1) the nature of vividness, (2) the effects of vivid representations, and (3) Sinhababu's account of alief cases.

The free energy principle of the brainなどにおいてもその成果の一端を公表した。

(Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Journal of the American Phiosophical Association, European Journal of Philosophy)での論文掲載などの成果があった。 How to Keep Up Good Appearances: Desire, Imagination, and the Good" (European Journal of Philosophy)及び、"Desire’s Own Reasons" (Journal of the American Philosophical Association)が出版され、美的鑑賞についての論文"Knowing When to Stop" (Australasian Journal of Philosophy)がアクセプトされた。

This project aims to investigate the nature of agency in an extended sense, which involves what we call "intermediate behaviors" that are not explained by beliefs and desires (Project1: Agency and Intermediate Behavior). In addition, (2) this project forms a research team of experts on philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and metaphysics to investigate the nature of agency from a variety of perspectives (Projects2: Agency and Perception, Project3: Agency and Vagueness, and Project4: Agency and Time).

The aim of this project is to explain the causes and the effects of irrational and/or abnormal beliefs. The subproject 1 aims to explain the cause of abnormal beliefs (i.e., delusions). I proposed a hybrid theory of delusion formation, which combines the basic ideas of two influential theories; i.e., two-factor theory and prediction-error theory. The subproject 2 aims to explain the behavioural consequences of irrational beliefs or, more precisely, the the irrational incoherence between beliefs and behavioural outputs. I argue that many cases of belief-behaviour incoherence are explained in terms of what Ruth Millikan calls 'pushmi-pullyu representations' (PPRs).The outcomes of this project are incorporated in two forthcoming books from Routledge and Polity.

Imaginative Resistance and Higher-Lower Inconsistency""Imaginative Resistance and Moral-Conventional Tasks"を準備中である。
Delusions as Malfunctioning Beliefs""What is the Role of Imagination in Delusion?"
