Scientific journal, Dispersion stabilization of nanoparticles for catalytic reactions is an important issue. However, dispersing agents should be carefully selected not to hinder catalytic performance. In the present study, physisorption of cyclic poly(ethylene glycol) (c-PEG) onto platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) was investigated in comparison with unmodified PtNPs (PtNPs/No PEG), PtNPs mixed with linear PEG (PtNPs/HO-PEG-OH), and PtNPs chemisorbed with HS-PEG-OMe (PtNPs/HS-PEG-OMe). DLS showed a significant increase in the particle size for PtNPs/c-PEG and PtNPs/HS-PEG-OMe compared to PtNPs/No PEG and PtNPs/HO-PEG-OH. ζ-potential measurements revealed values around −30 mV for PtNPs/No PEG and PtNPs/HO-PEG-OH, whereas PtNPs/c-PEG and PtNPs/HS-PEG-OMe approached 0 mV, which indicated that c-PEG and HS-PEG-OMe adsorb onto PtNPs to form a shielding layer. Moreover, PtNPs/c-PEG and PtNPs/HS-PEG-OMe were stable in a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution, but PtNPs/No PEG and PtNPs/HO-PEG-OH immediately aggregated. This suggests that high dispersion stability by c-PEG is comparable to ordinary surface modification using HS-PEG-OMe. Furthermore, the catalytic ability of PtNPs/c-PEG and PtNPs/HS-PEG-OMe was compared in various reactions. As a result, physisorbed PtNPs/c-PEG showed suitable catalytic activities, whereas chemisorbed PtNPs/HS-PEG-OMe was significantly hampered by the blocking of the catalytic sites with thiol in some reactions. Thus, physisorption of c-PEG endows PtNPs with dispersion stability and maintains the catalytic ability, leading to an alternative way of modifying metal nanoparticles. - Temperature- and Molecular Weight-Dependent Characteristics of Physisorption of Cyclic Poly(ethylene glycol) on Gold Surfaces

Scientific journal, Conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CP NPs) attract attention as nanoscale materials used for a variety of applications. In relation to this, the internal structure of CP NPs is an important factor for their properties, and numerous investigations have been carried out to control their nanomorphology. Here, we report the formation of CP NPs from defect-free cyclic poly(3-hexylthiophene) (c-P3HT) using a microfluidic device, and the effect of polymer topology on their structural and solvatochromic properties was investigated. CP NPs from c-P3HT exhibited reduced particle sizes and hypsochromic shifts in the absorption spectrum when compared to CP NPs obtained from corresponding linear P3HT (l-P3HT). Furthermore, steady responses in the solvatochromism of CP NPs from c-P3HT were observed, while those from l-P3HT displayed molecular weight dependency. These topology effects were caused by the change in the conjugation length, solubility, and crystallinity upon cyclization. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GIXS) studies of spin-coated P3HT films further showed a reduced interchain order and a larger proportion of face-on molecular orientation on a substrate for c-P3HTs. The various distinct structures observed for c-P3HT indicate the use of polymer topology as a means of nanostructure regulation. - Unique Complex Structure and Mechanism of Physisorption of Defect-Free Cyclic Poly(ethylene glycol) onto Gold Nanoparticles

Scientific journal, Aqueous solutions of conventional temperature-responsive amphiphilic polymers undergo a coil–globule conformational transition around the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) that causes the polymer surfaces to become hydrophobic and the polymers to aggregate together. Isocyanate polymers with alkylated oligo(ethylene oxide) side chains are expected to have rigid main chains and, thus, do not undergo the coil–globule structural transition, but they have recently been reported to exhibit temperature-responsive properties. In this study, molecular dynamics was used to calculate the agglomeration tendencies of two chains of poly(alkylated tri(ethylene oxide)isocyanate) (PRTEOIC, where R = methyl (Me) or ethyl (Et)) in aqueous solution to elucidate the LCST phenomenon in the absence of coil–globule conformational transition. Our MD simulations showed that aggregation also occurs in rod polymers. Furthermore, we found that both (PMeTEOIC)2 and (PEtTEOIC)2 showed parallel agglomeration of the two molecular chains with increasing temperature, but only (PMeTEOIC)2 showed a metastable T-shaped agglomeration in the middle temperature range. The crossing-point temperature (TCRP) at which the density of the first hydrophobic hydration shell around the sidechain alkyl group equals the bulk water density is a useful indicator for predicting the LCST of rod polymers with dense side chains terminated by alkyl groups. - All-Atom Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Temperature Response of Poly(glycidyl Ether)s with Oligooxyethylene Side Chains Terminated with Alkyl Groups

Scientific journal, The redox behaviors of macrocyclic molecules with an entirely π-conjugated system are of interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. In this study, defect-free cyclic P3HT with a degree of polymerization (DPn) from 14 to 43 was synthesized based on our previously established method, and its unique redox behaviors arising from the cyclic topology were investigated. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed that the HOMO level of cyclic P3HT decreases from –4.86 eV (14 mer) to –4.89 eV (43 mer), in contrast to the linear counterparts increasing from –4.94 eV (14 mer) to –4.91 eV (43 mer). During the CV measurement, linear P3HT suffered from electro-oxidation at the chain ends, while cyclic P3HT was stable. ESR and UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopy suggested that cyclic P3HT has stronger dicationic properties due to the interactions between the polarons. On the other hand, linear P3HT showed characteristics of polaron pairs with multiple isolated polarons. Moreover, the dicationic properties of cyclic P3HT were more pronounced for the smaller macrocycles. - Size Control and Enhanced Stability of Silver Nanoparticles by Cyclic Poly(ethylene glycol)

Scientific journal, Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in a wide range of applications, and the size control and stability of the nanoparticles are crucial aspects in their applications. In the present study, cyclized poly(ethylene glycol) (c-PEG) with various molecular weights, along with linear PEG with hydroxy chain ends (HO–PEG–OH) and methoxy chain ends (MeO–PEG–OMe) were applied for the Tollens’ synthesis of AgNPs. The particle size was significantly affected by the topology and end groups of PEG. For example, the size determined by TEM was 40 ± 7 nm for HO–PEG5k–OH, 21 ± 4 nm for c-PEG5k, and 48 ± 9 nm for MeO–PEG5k–OMe when the molar ratio of PEG to AgNO3 (ω) was 44. The stability of AgNPs was also drastically improved by cyclization; the relative UV–Vis absorption intensity (A/A0 × 100%) at λmax to determine the proportion of persisting AgNPs in an aqueous NaCl solution (37.5 mM) was 58% for HO–PEG5k–OH, 80% for c-PEG5k, and 40% for MeO–PEG5k–OMe, despite the fact that AgNPs with c-PEG5k were much smaller than those with HO–PEG5k–OH and MeO–PEG5k–OMe. - Topology and Sequence-Dependent Micellization and Phase Separation of Pluronic L35, L64, 10R5, and 17R4: Effects of Cyclization and the Chain Ends

English, Scientific journal, The topology effects of cyclization on thermal phase transition behaviors were investigated for a series of amphiphilic Pluronic copolymers of both hydrophilic–hydrophobic–hydrophilic and hydrophobic–hydrophilic–hydrophobic block sequences. The dye solubilization measurements revealed the lowered critical micelle temperatures (TCMT) along with the decreased micellization enthalpy (ΔHmic) and entropy (ΔSmic) for the cyclized species. Furthermore, the transmittance and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements indicated a block sequence-dependent effect on the clouding phenomena, where a profound decrease in cloud point (Tc) was only found for the copolymers with a hydrophilic–hydrophobic–hydrophilic block sequence. Thus, the effect of cyclization on these critical temperatures was manifested differently depending on its block sequence. Finally, a comparison of the linear hydroxy-terminated, methoxy-terminated, and cyclized species indicated the effect of cyclization to be unique from a simple elimination of the terminal hydrophilic moieties. - Topology-Dependent Interaction of Cyclic Poly(ethylene glycol) Complexed with Gold Nanoparticles against Bovine Serum Albumin for a Colorimetric Change

English, Scientific journal,Abstract Nano-sized metal particles are attracting much interest in industrial and biomedical applications due to the recent progress and development of nanotechnology, and the surface-modifications by appropriate polymers are key techniques to stably express their characteristics. Herein, we applied cyclic poly(ethylene glycol) (c -PEG), having no chemical inhomogeneity, to provide a polymer topology-dependent stabilization for the surface-modification of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) through physisorption. By simply mixingc -PEG, but not linear counterparts, enables AuNPs to maintain dispersibility through freezing, lyophilization, or heating. Surprisingly,c -PEG endowed AuNPs with even better dispersion stability than thiolated PEG (HS–PEG–OMe). The stronger affinity ofc -PEG was confirmed by DLS, ζ-potential, and FT-IR. Furthermore, thec -PEG system exhibited prolonged blood circulation and enhanced tumor accumulation in mice. Our data suggests thatc -PEG induces physisorption on AuNPs, supplying sufficient stability toward bio-medical applications, and would be an alternative approach to the gold–sulfur chemisorption. - Isolation of poly[d-lactate (LA)-co-3-hydroxybutyrate)]-degrading bacteria from soil and characterization of d-LA homo-oligomer degradation by the isolated strains

There is considerable investigation into the applications of carbon nanotubes because of their valuable properties. In this study, our goal was to develop several carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated substrates through an amide-bonding process. We prepared polycarboxylated multi-walled CNTs via a carboxylation reaction and then CNT derivatives were tethered to amino groups presented on a titanium, gold or glass substrate in the presence of a condensation agent. The obtained substrates were characterized with a Raman microscope, an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Raman mapping images indicated that the CNTs existed on the substrate surface homogeneously, and AFM and SEM observation revealed that the CNTs coating the surfaces had a three-dimensional network nanostructure. The CNTs remained on the surface even after ultrasonication treatment in organic solvent. However, they were removed from the substrate surface after soaking in NaOH aqueous solution. This result suggested that the CNTs were tethered to the substrate through amide bonding., Nano Biomedical Society, English - Precise synthesis of poly(1-adamantyl methacrylate) by atom transfer radical polymerization

Exciton splitting in the absorption spectra of monocarboxylic acid tetraphenylporphyrin (TPPCOOH) and monocarboxymethyltetraphenylporphyrin (TPPCOOCH3) was successfully reproduced by molecular dynamics and TDDFT simulations of the self-assembled dimers of both polyphyrins. The difference in the thermodynamically stable structures of the two porphyrin dimers and the magnitude of their structural fluctuations was attributed to the difference in the hydration structures of the carboxylic acid and carboxymethyl groups.
The stable structures of self-assembled complexes of TPPCOOH and TPPCOOCH3 with fullerenes were also investigated, and a DA complex with controllable fluctuations was possible by linking porphyrins in a ring-like structure.

In the last decade, the direct control of quantum wave functions of molecular electronic and vibrational states has been developed in the areas pf coherent control of chemical reactions and quantum computing by using ultrafast femtosecond laser. For the achievment of quantum control, the suppression of decohrence of wavefunctions are obviously important. Therefore, we studied the decohrence process of molecular wavefunctions of polycondensed aromatic molecules in the cyclodextrin nanocavity in aqueous/alcohol or aqueous/keton solvents with the deconvolution method by using Voigt function fitting. We also studied fluctuation of polymers motions in aqueous solution by using molecular dynamics simulations.

Cyclodextrins (CD) are cyclic oligosaccharides consisting of six or more D-glucopyranose units, the interior of which forms a hydrophobic cavity. CDs are well-known in their ability to form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic molecules in aqueous solution and a number of studies have been performed about photochemical properties of various guests in the CD nanocavities. In this research, we employed the CD confinement effects as a tool to suppress an electronic decoherence of the guest wavefunction by reducing intermolecular interactions between a guest molecule and the surrounding environment. Decoherence suppression was observed as a spectral narrowing of the electronic transitions of the guests in the frequency domain or as a quantum interference signal in the time domain.

The ability to control molecular wave functions may lead to novel quantum technologies such as bond-selective chemistry and quantum computing. An understanding of the coherent loss process is essential for the realization of these quantum technologies using quantum interference effects in condensed media. Although the overwhelming majority of chemical reactions take place in solution, there have been very few experimental studies on the coherent reaction control of polyatomic molecules in condensed media, due to the rapid decoherence of wavefunctions. These fast quantum-phase relaxations are thought to be caused by solute-solvent interactions. Thus, an understanding of the roles of solvent molecules in the dephasing mechanism is strongly required. It is noted that the inhibition of dephasing is necessary for the development of coherent control techniques for more general reactions. Therefore, the protection of molecular wavefunctions from the surrounding environment becomes an important issue for the realization of quantum control techniques in condensed phases.

In highly organized molecular systems, the coherent photochemical reactions such as excitation transfer and electron transfer can occur very fast (less than 1 ps) as a coherent motion of quantum mechanical wavepacket. The present work has been started with observation of the quantum coherence of exciton motion in molecular dimers of anthracene, perylene and in porphyrin dendrimers. Quantum beats appeared on fluorescence anisotropy decay which means the oscillatory motion of exciton in the course of energy transfer processes into the final state. The phase-locked double-pulse excitation method has been developed and provided us with another method to examine the quantum coherence of the reaction. Furthermore, this method allowed us to examine the photoswitching behavior of the coherent photoreaction by controlling the phase of two laser pulses.

The intramolecular electronic excitation coherence created by the first femtosecond laser pulse in a linked anthracene dimer, dithia-1,5[3,3]-anthracenophane (DTA), was enhanced or depreciated by the interference with the second femtosecond laser pulse, which is phase-locked to the first pulse. Two anthracene rings in DTA are stacked parallel but with nearly orthogonal orientation. The interference intensity of fluorescence from DTA was measured as a function of delay tune between two pulses with the optical phase angle being fixed with 0° (in-phase) or 180° (anti-phase). Two components of enhanced and depreciated oscillations appeared in the sub-picoseconds region as a function of the delay tame, with the time periods depending on the excitation wavelength. On the basis of theoretical analysis, the two components were assigned to the sum and difference frequencies between the energy splitting of molecular eigenstates and the detuning of the laser frequency relative to the molecular electronic transition energy. The exciton splitting between the two superposition states of the local excitation was derived to be 2Δ=35cm^<-1>, which is in close agreement with our previous result (29cm^<-1>) obtained from fluorescence anisotropy decay measurement.

The Coherent nature of photochemical reaction has been established for highly organized molecular systems through the experimental mesurement and theoretical formulation. The results are summarized as follows.
(1) The first observation of quantum beat signal has been attained for cyclic motion of exciton between two chromophores inanthracene dimers and perylene dimers. This means that the exciton moves coherently back and forth between the two chromophores, and that the photochemical reaction in molecular systems occurs coherently in several ps before the electronic decoherence. A special apparatus was constructed which was capable of quantum-interference control of the reaction.
(2) The coherent photochemical reaction under external electric field was investigated, and found that the reaction was controlled by applying electric field. Several types of porphyrin arrays of 1D (Osuka compounds) exhibited a significant enhancement of conductivity upon photoexcitation. These molecular systems may function as molecular wires switchable by photo-irradiation.
(3) The theoretical formulation has been established for coherent transports of electron and exciton in photosynthetic reaction centers (RC) in plants A higher-order perturbation theory was applied to the cyclic and sequential arrangements of molecules inside the RC proteins.
In Summary, the present reserch project has attained 90% success for the reserch program that we planned initially.

The dynamics of molecules in very large electron orbitals is of interest since those molecules can be accessible with the zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) electron spectroscopy recently. The very large electron orbital is created by the resonant multi-photon laser excitation of the molecule to the very high-lying Rydberg states with high principal quantum numbers (n>100). The very high-lying Rydberg states is easily ionized with a weak pulsed electric field and can be detected electron multiplier. The lifetimes of the very high-lying Rydberg states were measured to be in the range of tens of microseconds, which are extraordinarily longer than the simple n^3 extrapolation of the lifetimes of the lower lying Rydberg states. This fact requires some dynamics that is unique to the molecules in very large electron orbital. We developed a novel sweep-off-probe time resolved two pulsed field ionization apparatus, and obtained the evidence showing the vibronic coupling between Rydberg electron and ion-core molecular vibrations.

A new apparatus of two-color zero-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectrometer with a compact, high-resolution, high-brightness ZEKE electronanalyzer earlier developedin our group, has been set up at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology here at Tatsunokuchi since 1993. The energy resolution has been further improved by introducing a "two-pulsed-field" technique in our AEKE photo-electron measurements, and this technique has been successfully applied to our MATI (Mass Analyzed Threshold Ionization Spectroscopy).
In the two-color ZEKE measurements, two ns lasers are used, one is for excitation to a specific excited state, and the other is for further excitation to very high Rydberg states just a few wavenumber below the ionization threshold. In order to carry out measurements of very high resolution ZEKE electrons (less than one wavenumber), we have applied two kinds of pulsed electricfields with an appropriatedelay time, one is to remove all the emitted photoelectrons as well as some very shallow Rydberg electrons, and the other is to collect somewhat deeper Rydberg electrons.
The molecules studied in the present work are some benzene derivatives and higher aromatic molecules (benzonitrile, fluorobenzene, thioanisole, tetrafluorobenzene, naphthalene, indole, etc.) and their van der Waals complexes mainly with argon in supersonic jets. As results, we have successfully determined the adiabatic ionization potentials of these molecular species including van der Waals complexes formedin jets. We have also been able to observe van der Waals vibrational frequencies of the van der Waals cations from ZEKE photoelectron spectra.
