English, Scientific journal, Single-molecule measurements of biomaterials bring novel insights into cellular events. For almost all of these events, post-translational modifications (PTMs), which alter the properties of proteins through their chemical modifications, constitute essential regulatory mechanisms. However, suitable single-molecule methodology to study PTMs is very limited. Here we show single-molecule detection of peptide phosphorylation, an archetypal PTM, based on electrical measurements. We found that the phosphate group stably bridges a nanogap between metal electrodes and exhibited high electrical conductance, which enables specific single-molecule detection of peptide phosphorylation. The present methodology paves the way to single-molecule studies of PTMs, such as single-molecule kinetics for enzymatic modification of proteins as shown here. - First-principles study on structure and anisotropy of high N-atom density layer in 4H-SiC

Japanese, Research society,第一原理電気伝導特性計算法は, デバイス中の電子移動を解析・予測する手段として開発されてきたが, 従来の電子状態計算よりも非常に計算コストが高く, 実デバイスの機能予測を行うことは困難であった. 近年の超並列計算機の飛躍的な性能向上により, 計算コストの課題を超並列計算に適した実空間差分法に基づく数値計算法で回避できることが示され, 第一原理計算を利用した新機能・新原理デバイスのデザインへの道が開かれた. 今後, 超並列計算機を駆使して, 大規模シミュレーションによるデバイスデザインを実現するには, ボトルネックの計算コストのオーダーを下げる必要がある. 本稿では, 実空間差分法を用いた第一原理電気伝導特性計算のいくつかのボトルネック部分を, オーダーN 化によって高速化する取り組みについて紹介する.

Recently, the studies on nanoscale molecules which operate similarly to the silicon devices such as transistors and switches attract much attention since such molecules enable the further miniaturization of devices. For example, a single-row phenyl chain is expected to be expressed switching function by rotating phenyl rings. In this study, we examined the switching function of 1,4-biphenyldithiol and 4,4'-terphenyldithiol using first-principles electron-transport property calculation. As the results, the electron-transport properties of phenyl chain exhibit two conduction channels, where one channel shows broad peaks and the other represents sharp ones in the transmission traces. Broad peaks are disappeared by rotating phenyl ring with twist angle of 90° where the delocalized π bondings between the phenyl rings are broken. On the other hand, the sharp peaks remain with high conductivity even though the twist angle becomes 90°. This gives rise to increasing of electric power consumption and destabilization of the molecules caused by the off-state leakage current. Therefore, it is necessary to control the contribution of such channels to electron conduction. - Changing in Electron Properties of Carbon Nanotube on Molecular Adsorption

As the solution to air pollution of the exhaust gas of Plants and cars, an exhaust amount of air contaminants is strictly controlled now. From the environmental criteria about air contaminants, it demands the gas sensors that can reach up to ppb(gm-3) of magnitude in detecting the gas is subject to control. In some recent works, it is shown that an electroconductivity of semiconductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is increased due to the adsorption of NO2 molecules on the CNT surface. It is expected that the mechanisim enables us to develop a new CNT-based sensor to defect NO2 molecules in the exhaust fume. In this study, we used first-principles calculation to investigate the mechanism of increasing in conductivity of NO2-adsorbed CNT. As the result, the local density of states (LDOS) distribution shows that the contribution of π orbitals to the electron conductivity is larger than that of α orbitals. Additionallly, in the LDOS of the NO2-adsorbed (7,0)CNT, the density of states around the energy of π orbitals of CNT is increased. It is consider that this leads to increasing of the conductivity of CNT. - Time-saving first-principles calculation method for electron transport between jellium electrodes

When the spatial inversion symmetry is globally (or locally) broken in a system, the current through the system generates the global (or local) polarization of the spin angular momentum. Such current-induced spin polarization produces the spin current through an attached electrode. This work has shown that (1) an atomic chain along a helix gives the current-induced spin polarization which is largely modified by controlling the spatial inversion symmetry through the change in the curvature and the torsion of the helix, and that (2) in an atomic layer of group IV element, the current-induced spin polarization changes its direction with changing the electron density.

本研究課題では、ナノメータースケールの微小構造体の構造や機能を原子・電子レベルで予測・解明することができる量子力学に基づいた計算手法とそれに基づいたシミュレーションプログラムを開発した。このようなスケールの構造体はマクロな構造体とは全く異なった性質を示すため、量子力学に基づいた解析が必須である。開発したプログラムを用いて原子や分子が一列に並んだ鎖の電気伝導特性や半導体デバイス用絶縁膜の絶縁特性などを解明する研究を行った。
