  本研究は、当然ながら地理的文脈が重要となる「宣教」を中心的なテーマとしており、そのため特に13世紀から19世紀にかけての宣教地を実際に訪れて調査することを主に計画していた。具体的には中国福建省・泉州、アゾフ海に面したタナイス、インドのタナ（現ムンバイ）、チャガタイ・ハン国の中心都市だったアルマリクのあった地域、ジョージア、アルメニア、メキシコ・ポポカテペトル山腹、ペルーのクスコなどであるが、コロナの影響とウクライナ情勢により、まったく現地調査ができない状況である。
  本来であればモンゴル時代のヨーロッパからの宣教を研究の出発点とするはずであったが、これに関しても、イタリアのパドヴァ、ヴェローナ、シエナの重要な作例を再訪することができず、美術史研究所に滞在することができないため、主に宣教の思想的な背景を成したと予想されるフランシスコ会の聖霊派（スピリトゥアーリ）／厳格派（オッセルヴァンティ）の主要な修道士、具体的にはアンジェロ・クラレーノ、やや後になるがジョヴァンニ・ダ・カペストラーノやベルナルディーノ・ダ・シエナ等の経歴や著作の確認を行っている。
  また、これまで国外出張を延期してきたため、当初予定した調査を研究期間内に終えることは難しくなっている。そのため渡航が可能になった後も、調査対象を部分的にではあるが遠隔地から日本に近い韓国やベトナムへと変更し、本研究のテーマの一つである大航海時代から近代にいたる時代（16～19世紀）の宣教地の美術作例について、特に「殉教」に注目してやや別な方向から進めることを準備している。

  2018年9月に長崎県内で実施した合同調査をふまえ、各自が国内外で研究調査を進めた。特に、トレント公会議後のカトリック教会の指針を反映したキリシタン図像と日本のキリシタン独自の図像との分別に関する問題に焦点をあてた。キリシタン美術には、明らかに西欧起源の図像、西欧キリスト教の図像と日本在来の宗教図像との混合、そして、日本在来の宗教図像のキリスト教への転用など、さまざまな形態がみられ、また、明確に区分すべきではない例も数多く存在する。その背景となる各時代や地域の社会や文化、宗教の状況に関して、各自の専門分野から考察を行った。
  10月、１１月には、ERC(European Research Council)設立のミュンヘン大学の研究グループSACRIMA（The Normativity of Sacred Images in Early Modern Europe/西欧近世における聖像の規範）とともに、共同セミナー/講演会を実施した。このプロジェクトのテーマは、（Early Modern Sacred Images in Japan and Europe: Contact, Comparison, Conflict/近世ヨーロッパと日本の聖なるイメージ）である。10月にはミュンヘン大学で、そして11月には早稲田大学で実施したが、日本からは研究分担者や国内外の研究協力者のほか、早稲田の学生も発表を行った。トレント公会議以降の西欧カトリックの聖像、そして日本のキリシタンの聖像における規範と禁忌について協議をした。早稲田で開催されたセミナーには数多くの聴衆が出席し、広く問題を共有する機会となったことも特筆すべきであろう。なお、これには、DAAD（ドイツ学術交流会）-早稲田大学パートナーシッププログラムの共催を得ている。

  We have studied Russian culture by researching marginal and overseas regions. Specifically we have first investigated cultural interaction between marginal regions like Sakhalin and Moscow, the center of Russian culture. Secondly we have studied the unique characteristics of cultural activities of emigrant Russian communities in China, Japan and Europe in various fields like literature, art and religion. We have achieved a comprehensive understanding of Russian culture through our study of marginal and overseas regions.

  In this research, paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries, all remaining in Assisi, Siena, Naples, Padua, and Fidenza and related to St. Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan Order, are analyzed to illustrate the extent to which Observants' or extreme Spirituals' thoughts affected the iconography of the Last Judgment and glory of Heaven, as well as Franciscan missionary and martyrdom scenes. Since the paintings are also shown to have revealed the Church's orthodoxy when exhibited in public places, both aspects should be considered in understanding the paintings amid their historical backgrounds.

  ドンナレジーナ聖堂は、内陣と2階修道女席の建築タイプにおいて、イタリアでは同様のものを見出せないため、昨年度から引き続いて比較作例として、ドイツのバイエルン州中北部、バーデン・ヴュルテンベルク州北東部の女子シトー会修道院と、ヘッセン州のアルテンベルクにある女子プレモントレ会修道院などを実地に調査した。基本的な資料となる建築写真を準備した上で、ミュンヘンの中央美術史研究所、バイエルン州立美術館などで文献にも当たっている。絵画に関しては、一部が失われてしまっているが、詳細に物語場面が描き込まれているドンナレジーナ聖堂の「アレクサンドリアの聖カタリナ伝」と「ローマの聖アグネス伝」を中心に検討した。プリンストン大学のIndex of Christian Artで網羅的に中世の作例を調べ、両聖人伝の図像が確立してゆく時期にあって、ドンナレジーナ聖堂の連作がどういった特徴を備え、修道女のみによって鑑賞されたという特殊な状況が、どのように反映しているかを考察した。また、同じく広大な修道女席を備えたサンタ・キアーラ聖堂の絵画を再構成するための調査を、ナポリの文化財保護局で始めている。なお本研究は、建築と絵画とが密接に関係する事例を対象とするものであるが、この観点から、シエナのサン・フランチェスコ修道院参事会室にあったアンブロージョ・ロレンツェッティによるフレスコ画『フランシスコ会士の殉教』と...
