English, Lake Mashu is the only lake that serves as a baseline station of the United Nations Global Environment Monitoring System/Water (GEMS/Water) Programme. In this study, the concentration of trace lead in lake-water samples was determined by solid-phase extraction/concentration-ICP-MS to clarify the depth vertical profiles of lead. The finding that the lead concentration in the lake water above the thermocline shows a higher value than that in the lake water below the thermocline means that the input of lead into the surface water occurs during the thermocline-stratification period. The isotopic ratios (208Pb/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb) were measured to estimate the origin of the lead. The obtained lead isotopic ratios in the surface water samples are similar to the reported values of the lead emitted in Japan rather than those at the Eurasia continent. The quantitative and isotopic analytical results in this study suggest a potential input of anthropogenically derived lead, presumably originating in Japan, into the surface water of Lake Mashu via the atmosphere since there is no inflowing river to the lake.

Journal of Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Ser. G (Environmental Research), 71, 5, 227, 233, Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Sep. 2015, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, Scientific journal, Elevated particulate matter (PM) concentrations in urban atmosphere in Japan are associated with fine particles emitted and/or formed in an urban area and those transported from the Asian continents. It is thus important to know each contribution for the improvement of urban PM pollution. In this study, a new approach to evaluate transboundary PM pollution is developed based on the measurement of optical properties of fine particles such as SSA (Single Scattering Albedo) and B/N ratio (absorption coefficient/fine particle number concentration), and applied to Sapporo, Japan. The results suggest that during the observation period (June - Dec. 2014), transboundary pollution contributed more than 70% to the PM concentrations in Sapporo, and that transboundary pollution contribution has a seasonal variation with a decrease in summer and an increase in autumn. The approach is expected to serve as an important tool towards effective measures for PM pollution control in Japan.

  • Aerosol Dry Deposition on Forests in East Asia

Earozoru Kenkyu, 29, 1, 160, 167, Japan Association of Aerosol Science and Technology, Feb. 2014, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, Scientific journal, Recent research on aerosol dry deposition in forests in East Asia, focusing particularly on field measurements, estimations of deposition rates, and developments of measurement technique, was reviewed to contribute assessments of the impacts of aerosols on vegetation. Some measurements of aerosol deposition by the gradient method indicated that the deposition velocities were in agreement with other experimental results in North America and Europe, and were higher than those calculated by theoretical models. Higher deposition velocities were associated with larger friction velocities and unstable conditions. The deposition velocities were possibly influenced by humidity, due to the growth in size of hygroscopic aerosols and the enhancement of surface collection efficiency. Some estimations of aerosol deposition rates indicated i) high ratios of sulfate to SO2 in deposition rates in remote areas of Japan, ii) high dry deposition of elemental carbon on a tropical forest, and iii) about 10~20% year to-year variations in aerosol deposition, with a higher percentage variation in tropical areas. Regarding aerosol deposition on forest leaves, there was larger deposition in higher parts than in lower parts, and approximately 70% of total aerosol deposition onto forests probably deposit on forest leaves during the leafy season. It is indicated that the relaxed eddy accumulation method could obtain more accurate data on the fluxes of aerosol components than data obtained with the gradient method.

Japanese, Scientific journal, The atmospheric behavior of nitrous acid, HONO, was discussed on the basis of field measurements by an annular-denuder or a filter-pack method at four different nature sites in northern Japan, Sapporo (urban), Moshiri (rural), Rishiri (coastal remote) and Teshio (mountainous remote), in terms of their atmospheric chemistry parameters including nitrogen oxides, nitric acid, nitrate aerosol and ozone. The annual mean concentrations of HONO in Sapporo ranged from 36 to 41 nmol m-3 where the concentration level was 11 to 31 times higher than those for the other sites. A different seasonality of the HONO concentration was detected at the different nature site: the urban site showed a maximum in the winter, the remote in the summer, and the rural in the winter and the summer. A heterogeneous reaction between NO2 and H2O on the surface of airborne particles and the ground surface is likely to play a significant role in the nitrous acid formation because the HONO/NOx ratio in ambient air is higher than those by direct emission as reported by Kurtenbach et al. (2001). In the case of the ground-surface heterogeneous reaction, the concentration gradient of HONO is expected to negative correlate with that of NO2 because the deposition of NO2 would induce emissions of HONO into the atmosphere. Actually, in Teshio, the difference between the concentrations of HONO at the heights of 30 m and 10 m positive correlated with that for NO2. Furthermore, the Rishiri measurements showed a significant correlation between the concentrations of HONO and PM10. In addition, Rishiri and Moshiri measurements showed significant correlations between the concentration ratio, HONO/NO2, and absolute humidity. These results strongly support the view that the heterogeneous reactions on the airborne particles prevails in the formation of HONO in the rural and remote areas with considerably low concentrations of NO2. On the other hand, the heterogeneous reaction on the ground-surface reaction plays a significant role in Sapporo, especially in the winter with high NO2 concentrations. In Sapporo, negative correlations were detected in the winter between the concentrations of HONO and NO, and between of HNO3 and O3, which would be attributable to the insufficient conversion of NO2 to HNO3, and further to nitrate species, under urban conditions because of the low concentration of ozone along with high concentrations of NO. These field measurements would indicate that the behavior of nitrous acid is controlled by the chemical reactions of NO2 with H2O, and that this heterogeneous reaction was affected by the NO2 concentration, absolute humidity and O3 concentration.

Japanese, A sampling campaign for the determination of concentrations of nonylphenol ehoxylates (NPnEO) and those persistent metabolites in freshwaters and sediments of sewage treatment plants (STPs), rivers, and lake in Sapporo. Water samples were collected from eighteen sampling sitesin STPs, rivers, and lake (from November 2003 to December 2003), while sediment samples were collected from three sampling sites in lake (Febrary 2003). And based on the survey, risk to wildlife in water environment and behavior of nonylphenol ethoxylates and those metabolites were discussed. In this study, shorter-chain nonylphenol ethoxylates, nonylphenol carboxylates (NPnEC), and nonylphenol (NP) were analyzed as metabolites of NPnEO. But according to recent study, there are other metabolites (for example, CAPECs, both ethoxy side chain and alkyl side chain are carboxylated). Concentration of NPnEO metabolites in the STP effluent was 9% of influent. 91% was removed or degraded to metabolites that could'nt be analyzed in this study. Concentrations of metabolites that could be analyzed in this study in Barato Lake was under LOEC (Lowest Observed Effective Concentration), and the compounds were proved to be harmless to wildlife there.Concentrations of each depth of lake sediment reflected the reduction of domestic production quantity of AP.

Snow survey were conducted in Siberia area in each winter from 1999 to 2001 by collecting snow samples. Snow samples were analyzed by ICP-MS for quantification of heavy metal (19elements). 15 elements, such as Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb, were usually detected. Deposition fluxes were calculated from metal concentration and water equivalent. Due to human activity, the fluxes were enhanced around city like Irukustk, Bragobeshensk and so on. The different deposition patterns (eg., Cu, Pb, Mn, Zn) were observed from Yakutsk to Irukustk.

Japanese, Continuous samplings of atmospheric aerosols, gas and fallout were carried out from July 1998 to December 1999 at the peak of Mt. Birao in Teshikaga town, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Also, we collected lake water both in Lake Masyu near Mt. Birao and Lake Kuttara in Shiraoi town, southern Hokkaido. Atmospheric concentrations of total particulate mass (TPM), carbonacious matter and sulfate were not shown seasonal variations, however, the concentrations of heavy metals such as lead, zinc and arsenic etc. significantly increased in winter. From the results of isentropic trajectory analyses, the pollutant was supposed to be transported from the direction of northeastern China and Siberia in winter season. Also the metals in insoluble atmospheric fallout significantly increased from winter to spring. Pollutant such as nickel and lead, which supposed to fall out from the atmosphere, in both lakes. Moreover, the concentrations such as zinc, nickel, vanadium and copper, tend to increase from those measured in 1981.

Atmospheric turbidity coefficients were calculated at five sites (Nemuro, Sapporo, Shionomisaki, Tosa-Shimizu and Ishigaki) in Japan from 1980 through 1995. Theturbidity coefficients ranged 0.03-0.30 at Nemuro, 0.05-0.45 at Sapporo, 0.05-0.45 at Shionomisaki, 0.03-0.40 at Tosa-Shimizu and 0.03-0.40 at Ishigaki. In 1982-1984 and 1991-1993 they had the maximum due to large volcanic eruptions of Mt. E1 Chichon and It.Pinatubo, respectively. Except effect of the volcanic eruption, the turbidity coefficients had tendency of increase from 1955 through 1990 due to increase of human activities. Global increase of the turbidity coefficient of 0.042 may cause the decrease of the global mean surface temperature of 0.3°C.

This study works on development, practical use of a small personal exposure measuring equipment and establishment of the new evaluation technique for the long-range transported pollution ratio based on the measurement.
    (1) A new approach to evaluate transboundary PM pollution is applied to Tama-kyuryo, Kazo and Nagasaki city. The results suggest that transboundary pollution contributed more than 70% to the PM2.5 concentrations, and that the ontribution has a seasonal variation with a decrease in summer and an increase in autumn.
    (2) The sensor system developed and used in the field test is a particle counter with a volume of 768 cm3, a weight of 420 g, and over 24 h of continuous operation. Using the sensor, personal exposure in winter were characterized for 5 subjects living in Sapporo area. Ambient PM2.5 data measured at fixed stations were used as a comparison against the personal PM2.5 exposures and produced poor correlations between personal and ambient PM2.5.

This study try to put portable and affordable ozone sensor to practical use.
In a study period of 3 years, toward the practical realization of the ozone sensor, we conducted studies for 1) identification of environmental conditions affecting the sensor response, and establishment of a calibration method, 2) development of monitoring data transmission system, and 3) application of ozone sensor to environmental measurement in a distant area and a forest area.
As a result, it was shown that automatic and unmanned environmental monitoring with the sensors is possible when the sensor is calibrated for the seasonal variation of ambient temperature, and this sensor can greatly contribute to forest impact evaluation of ozone.

From the observations of aerosol deposition at forests in East Asia, the knowledge on deposition velocities was obtained. In Japanese remote area, the ratio of sulfate deposition to sulfur dioxide deposition was higher than other areas. The majority of elemental carbon deposition onto tropical forests in Southeast Asia is possibly due to the dry disposition process. On forest leaves, there were more deposited aerosols in the upper part than in the lower part and approximately a half of total aerosol deposition onto forests could deposit.

  • Study on the Reduction Technology of Environmental Load for Human Living and Life by using Wakkanai Siliceous Shale in Hokkaido
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    2006 - 2007
    NAGANO Katsunori; KUWABARA Kobei
Wakkanai Siliceous Shale (WSS), a natural porous material with 4 to 20 nm of meso-pore, is widely used as an intelligent humidity control material for housing. In this study, an improvement of water vapor adsorption ability by soaking WSS in deliquescent solution, enhancement of VOC adsorption of WSS modified by alkaline solution, and deodorization effect of odor has been investigated.
The preparation of WSS containing deliquescent material was performed by the impregnation into the LiC1 and CaCl_2 solution. The amount of water adsorption increased with increasing LiC1 and CaCl_2, and it showed 900 mg/g at 95 %RH with 20 wt % of LiC1-solution (supported a mount of LiC1 was 120 mg/g). However, at high humidity condition, the elution of deliquescent materials from the pore was observed. To solve this problem, an optimal amount of deliquescent in WSS was defined by the change of RGB color obtained from the image scanner. The maximum amount of water. Adsorption is 330 mg/g (19.3mg/g-LiCl) and 320 mg/g (36.3mg/g-CaCl_2) at 95 %RH. The stable ability of the water adsorption/desorption can be achieved over 200 times of repetition test, which is stepwise change from 23 ℃ and 75 %RH to 40 ℃ and 28 %RH in every 6 hours interval.
The pore distribution of WSS was changed by using alkaline solution. Particularly, in the treatment of 2mol/l of NaOH solution, toluene adsorption increases 1.5 times, because of making of 2.5nm pore.
From the evaluation of the odor reduction with WSS, it was found that the ammonia, trimetylamine, isovaleric acid and acetaldehyde showed good adsorption performance compared to charcoal. However, the performance of sulfur component such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan in WSS were much lower than it in charcoal. In addition, the effect of continuous deodorization for isovaleric acid (1 ppm of inlet concentration) was confirmed over 50 days by using 5g of WSS in glass column at 25 ℃ and 50 %RH.

  • CONSTRACTION OF A WATER REUSE SYSTEM COMBINED WITH AN ADVANCED WASTE WATER TREATMENT PROCESS
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research

The objective of this study was to propose an urban water reuse system combined with a new advanced wastewater treatment process. The following subjects of research were accomplished.
1.Development and scale up of an advanced wastewater treatment process, The authors proposed the upgrading wastewater system consisted of an anaerobic fluidized pellet bed bioreactor and a contact aerobic bioreactor. We succeeded scaling up of this system to pilot plant scale of about 40m^3.
2.Reuse of chlorinated sewage wastewater effluent treated by the upgrading treatment system as small river water ; the supply of the chlorinated sewage effluent to a small river facilitated the growth of algae resistant to chlorine, Chlorolobion braunii and built up the ecosystem using this algae as primary food source.
3.Behavior of micro pollutant, nonylphenolethoxylate (NPnEO ; n-number of ethoxy group) in the sewage works and natural water system ; Most of NPnEO and its decomposed substances were removed from sewage wastewater in the primary settling tank. NP n EO were oxidized to hydrophilic nonylphenplcarboxylate (NPnEC ; n=1〜4) in the aeration tank and discharge in the natural water system. Below 0.2 ppb of nonylphenol and a small amount of NPnEC (several ppb) were detected in the natural water.

Various samples from lakes, rivers, secondly effluents and so on were characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy using three dimensional excitation-emission matrix. Our results suggest that dissolved organic matter can be categorized into three distinct groups. Group1 is distinguished by a fulvic acid-type fluorescence of excitation at 270nm and emission at 435nm (Ex. 495nm/Em. 435nm). Fulvic acid-type substances concentration can be calculated using this relative fluorescence intensity. Grpup2 is distinguished by a protein-type fluorescence (Ex. 280nm/Em. 340nm). This substance consisted of protein from secondly effluent and that released by algae. Group3 is distinguished by a fluorescence caused by organic matter in secondly effluent (Ex. 495nm/Em. 515nm). This substance was hydrophobic and not biodegradable. The relative fluorescence intensity in excitation 495nm and emission 515nm may be an indicator of the influence of secondly effluent.
Moreover, the non-ionic surfactants such as nonylphenol ethoxylates and fluorescent whitening agents (4,4'-bis[2-sulfostyryl] biphenil) can be characterized by the fluorescence of Ex. 230nm/Em. 295± 5nm and Ex. 350nm/Em. 435nm respectively. These substances can be quantitatively analyzed by using both the opposite phase HPLC and the fluorescence excitation and emission matrix method in combination. The behaviors of these substances during sewage treatment system were clarified.

Hokkaido, the land blessed with nature has many oligotrophic lakes. The state of such lakes is changing by development of the area. This report means to show how human activities effect on water of Lake Kuttara and Mashu, the representative ologotrophic lake of Hokakido. Especially we analyzed the behavior of nutrients of the lakes. Besides that, we proposed the way to manage water flow into the lakes to keep them natural depending on the data.
In 1999, we investigated the actual conditions of lake water quality and rivers flowing into lake, and in 2000, we made more precise water quality research on lake Kuttara. And we also studied load-production mechanism of nutrients and other pollution matters and management of catchments area to keep oligotrophic lakes in desirable state.
【Results】(1999)We grasped general water quality of Lake Kuttara and Lake Mashu by our survey.. After the collection of data in the past, we could make clear the trend of water quality of Lake Kuttara. As Chlorotec(water quality monitoring instrument), which we purchased in 1999, did not work well, we made some improvements and at the end of the year, we could make use of it.(2000)We researched on Lake Kuttara for 7times, from May to October, and on Lake Mashu, once in August with Ministry of Environment. Especially on Lake Kuttara, we made the research in rainy season in August successively. We took water samples from 9 layers, at the deepest, 146m. From the research, we saw nitrate-nitrogen increases a little recently but transparency did not change so much. As the concentration of nitrate nitrogen is more than in Lake Mashu, it is necessary to manage the catchments area. And from the chlorophyll range in Lake Kuttara, we could find the new concepts about the movement of algae(phytoplankton).

Atmospheric concentrations of aerosol chemical species and gaseous pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide have been measured at Yakutsk, Tiksi and Norilsk in Siberia since 1994.
At Tiksi concentrations of elemental carbon, organic matter, sulfate and heavy metals as lead, copper, vanadium, nickel and arsenic increase in winter and spring. The results show occurance of the arctic haze also around Tiksi area.
At Norilsk, atmospheric concentration of sulfur dioxide is high as 260 ppbv, which is ten times more than that in Sapporo. Pine leaves, moss and surface soil around Norilsk contain much amount of sulfate and heavy metals as copper, nickel, cobalt and lead, which are derived from the nickel and copper smeltery in Norilsk city. The upper layer in the surface soil (active layer) contains higher concentrations of sulfate and heavy metals. By using the vertical profile of the pollutant concentration in soil, we calculated accumulation of the pollutants for these 30 years emitted from the smeltry in Norilsk city.
Ten days backward trajectory analysis shows that a large amount of air pollutants is transported from Ural industry and Norilsk area to Tiksi in winter.
