Scientific journal, Climate change is accelerating, and the monitoring of plant phenology is becoming increasingly important. In response to this need, many vegetation indices (VIs) and analytical methods have been developed. However, many VIs are vulnerable to uncertainties caused by snowmelt, making them potentially unsuitable for monitoring spring phenology in forested regions where leaf flush (start of season, SOS) begins simultaneously with snowmelt. Although several VIs for snowy regions have been proposed, most of them were designed for tundra vegetation, such as grasslands. Currently, no VI or analytical method specifically suited for snowy forested regions has been firmly established. Similarly, there is still no well-established method for continuously monitoring autumn coloration. In this study, we propose the use of hue, one of the components of the HSV model, for remote sensing of plant phenology. Hue quantifies differences in object color and is expected to facilitate clearer distinction of snow influence. It may also enable accurate detection of canopy color transitions, such as autumn coloration. We evaluate the applicability of hue to remote sensing using in situ spectroradiometer observations collected from five sites of the Phenological Eyes Network (PEN), which represent a range of ecosystems—including forests, grasslands, and paddy fields—as well as the relative spectral response (RSR) of the Second-generation Global Imager (SGLI) onboard the GCOM-C satellite operated by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). The results suggest that hue is more robust to snow-related uncertainties than traditional VIs (NDVI, EVI, CCI, NDGI) and may also be effective for quantifying autumn coloration. Hue is calculated solely from blue, green, and red reflectance, without relying on near-infrared (NIR) or shortwave infrared (SWIR) channels. Since blue, green and red channels are available on almost all optical satellite sensors, hue may offer broader applicability than many traditional VIs. - The global spectrum of tree crown architecture

Scientific journal, Abstract
Trees can differ enormously in their crown architectural traits, such as the scaling relationships between tree height, crown width and stem diameter. Yet despite the importance of crown architecture in shaping the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, we lack a complete picture of what drives this incredible diversity in crown shapes. Using data from 374,888 globally distributed trees, we explore how climate, disturbance, competition, functional traits, and evolutionary history constrain the height and crown width scaling relationships of 1914 tree species. We find that variation in height–diameter scaling relationships is primarily controlled by water availability and light competition. Conversely, crown width is predominantly shaped by exposure to wind and fire, while also covarying with functional traits related to mechanical stability and photosynthesis. Additionally, we identify several plant lineages with highly distinctive stem and crown forms, such as the exceedingly slender dipterocarps of Southeast Asia, or the extremely wide crowns of legume trees in African savannas. Our study charts the global spectrum of tree crown architecture and pinpoints the processes that shape the 3D structure of woody ecosystems. - The JapanFlux2024 dataset for eddy covariance observations covering Japan and East Asia from 1990 to 2023

Abstract. Eddy covariance observations play a pivotal role in understanding the land–atmosphere exchange of energy, water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and other trace gases, as well as the global carbon cycle and earth system. To promote the networking of individual measurements and the sharing of data, FLUXNET links regional networks of researchers studying land–atmosphere processes. JapanFlux was established in 2006 as a country branch of AsiaFlux. Despite the growing number of shared data globally, the availability in Asia is currently limited. In this study, we developed an open dataset of the eddy covariance observations for Japan and East Asia, called JapanFlux2024, that was conducted by researchers affiliated with Japanese research institutions. The dataset consists of data collected at 79 sites with 652 site-years from 1990 to 2023. The data format is fully compatible with the recent FLUXNET data product, FLUXNET2015. Here, we present the data description and data processing and show the value of processed fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, and CO2. The dataset will facilitate important studies for Japan and East Asia, such as land-atmosphere interactions, improvement of process models, and upscaling fluxes using machine learning and remote sensing technology as well as bridge collaborations between Asia and FLUXNET. - Canopy height damage by Typhoon Songda in Northern Hokkaido, Japan, in 2004

Scientific journal, Abstract
The increasing need for the risk assessment of disastrous wind disturbance, especially by tropical cyclones (TCs), has been emphasized because the number of intense TCs is projected to increase due to global warming, though there are some discrepancies across oceanic basins. There is also an agreement of the northward migration of TC disturbance in Far East Asia in the future, when meteorological changes accompanying global warming are considered together. This study assessed the canopy height damage caused by the historic Typhoon Songda in 2004 from the perspective of the relations with topography, wind traits, and forest canopy types in northern Hokkaido, Japan. We found that the order of canopy height damage was consistent along every single aspect and every canopy height class with conifer-canopied forest > mixed-canopied forest > hardwood-canopied forest and higher damage on windward aspects than on leeward aspects. It was noted that the canopy height damage to hardwood and mixed forests showed a threshold pattern at around 14 m in canopy height, whereas for conifer forests, this was not the case. Strong causal relations were not observed between canopy damage (outcomes) and wind severity, inclination of slope, or canopy height (causes), though the causal relations were highly significant between wind severity or canopy height (mediators) and altitude or inclination of slope (causes) for all the studied canopy types. Given typhoon-induced forest damage is the consequence of the interactions among various intermingled biotic and abiotic causes and that areas affected by intense typhoons are anticipated to extend northward, more case studies in regions such as Hokkaido in Japan and the further north, which have rarely been visited by typhoons but are projected to be more affected by increasing number of intense typhoons, should be regarded as a high priority from this time forward for sustainable forest management. - Forest structure explains spatial heterogeneity of decadal carbon dynamics in a cool-temperate forest

Scientific journal, Abstract
Accurate evaluation of forest biomass distribution and its long-term change over wide areas is required for effective forest carbon management and prediction of landscape-scale forest dynamics. We evaluated a landscape-scale (225 km2) decadal forest carbon budget at a 1 ha spatial resolution in a cool-temperate forest, by repeating airborne laser observations 10 years apart and partitioning net forest biomass change (FBC) into growth and mortality. Using >10 000 samples, we revealed that naturally regenerated forests have large spatial heterogeneity in net biomass change, and 3/4 of the photosynthetically acquired carbon stock moved to necromass even without anthropogenic disturbances. Actual carbon residence time as living tree biomass was estimated by dividing biomass by growth or mortality rates. The residence time was 107 and 106 years, respectively with large spatial variation among stands (48 and 42 years, respectively, as the difference between 25 and 75 percentile), although studied forest stands have small variation in the forest functional type in a landscape-scale. The best predictors of subsequent decadal biomass changes were two forest structural factors, mean canopy height and canopy height variation in addition to one environmental factor, elevation. Considering the long lifetime of trees, these structural factors may be an indicator of forest soundness rather than a cause of forest growth or mortality. However, in any cases, these structural factors can be powerful predictors of subsequent FBC. - Long-term Consequences on Soil Fungal Community Structure: Monoculture Planting and Natural Regeneration.

English, Scientific journal, Understanding the regeneration and succession of belowground communities, particularly in forests, is vital for maintaining ecosystem health. Despite its importance, there is limited knowledge regarding how fungal communities change over time during ecosystem development, especially under different forest restoration strategies. In this study, we focused on two restoration methods used in northern Japan: monoculture planting and natural regeneration. We examined the responses of the fungal community to monoculture plantations (active tree planting) and naturally regenerated (passive regeneration) forests over a 50-year chronosequence, using natural forests as a reference. Based on DNA metabarcoding, we assessed the richness of fungal Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) and their dissimilarity. Our findings revealed that soil fungal richness remained stable after natural regeneration but declined in monoculture plantations, from 354 to 247 OTUs. While the compositional dissimilarity of fungal assemblages between monoculture plantations and natural forests remained consistent regardless of the time since tree planting, it significantly decreased after natural regeneration, suggesting recovery to a state close to the reference level. Notably, the composition of key functional fungal groups-saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal- has increasingly mirrored that of natural forests over time following passive natural regeneration. In summary, our study suggests that monoculture plantations may not be effective for long-term ecosystem function and service recovery because of their limited support for soil fungal diversity. These results underscore the importance of natural regeneration in forest restoration and management strategies. - Modeling forest above-ground biomass using freely available satellite and multisource datasets

English, Scientific journal, Climate warming is advancing snowmelt timing in the spring at high latitudes. To predict tree growth in subboreal forests under warmer climates based on mechanistic understanding, it is important to assess how advancing snowmelt influences tree growth in the spring via ecophysiological changes in subboreal forests. In this study, we conducted a field manipulation experiment of snowmelt timing and investigated the response of tree growth, leaf functional traits, and bud-burst phenology in the spring for the seedlings of six dominant tree species in subboreal forests. We found that the spring growth of only one species (Kalopanax septemlobus) out of six species responded positively to advancing snowmelt. Among the leaf functional traits (leaf mass per area, leaf nitrogen content, leaf δ13C value, leaf dry matter content, and leaf area) and bud-burst phenology, only the increase in leaf area was linked to the enhanced shoot growth of K. septemlobus. The significant change in K. septemlobus might be associated with its ecological characteristics to prefer regeneration in canopy gaps. These results indicate that advancing snowmelt under warmer winters can be beneficial for tree species that can plastically develop leaf area in Japanese subboreal forests. - Presence of understory dwarf bamboo determines ecosystem fine root production in a cool-temperate forest in northern Japan

Scientific journal, The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and the chlorophyll carotenoid index (CCI) are carotenoid-sensitive vegetation indices, which can monitor vegetation’s photosynthetic activities. One unique satellite named “Global Change Observation Mission-Climate (GCOM-C)” is equipped with a sensor, “Second Generation Global Imager (SGLI)”, which has the potential to frequently and simultaneously observe PRI and CCI over a wide swath. However, the observation accuracy of PRI and CCI derived from GCOM-C/SGLI remains unclear in forests. Thus, we demonstrated their accuracy assessment by comparing them with in situ data. We collected in situ spectral irradiance data at four forest sites in Japan for three years. We statistically compared satellite PRI with in situ PRI, and satellite CCI with in situ CCI. From the obtained results, the satellite PRI showed poor agreement (the best: r=0.294 (p<0.05)) and the satellite CCI showed good agreement (the best: r=0.911 (p<0.001)). The greater agreement of satellite CCI is possibly because satellite CCI contained fewer outliers and satellite CCI was more resistant to small noise, compared to satellite PRI. Our results suggest that the satellite CCI is more suitable for practical use than the satellite PRI with the latest version (version 3) of GCOM-C/SGLI’s products. - Assessing forest-canopy structure in restoration areas of Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido, Japan from an adaptive- management perspective

English, Scientific journal, Given the time scale based on the duration of exposure to global warming, natural climate-gradient studies and experimental manipulations have detected long-term (decades to centuries) and short-term (years to decades) ecological responses to global warming. Combination of these two complementary approaches within a single study may enable prediction of the likely responses of ecological processes to global warming. To understand how global warming affects plant–herbivore interactions within a canopy of Erman’s birch, we combined an elevational gradient study and a warming experiment involving mature birch trees in which the soil and tree branches were warmed separately. In the elevational gradient study, herbivory by chewing insects and plant growth increased as elevation decreased, and the concentrations of condensed tannins and total phenolics in the leaves decreased. In the warming experiment, soil warming alone increased herbivory, and the addition of branch warming amplified the effect on herbivory. Soil warming alone decreased the tannin concentration, and the addition of branch warming led to a further reduction. The variation in herbivory was best explained by the tannin content of leaves. Our experimental results demonstrate that the decreased tannin content of leaves due to a combination of soil and branch warming was an important driver of increased herbivory in the canopy of the mature birch trees. The similar tendencies in the short- and long-term responses imply that global warming is likely to increase background herbivory in mature birch trees by decreasing the tannin content of leaves in the canopy. - Exploring a best vegetation index to explain the seasonal variation of a forest photosynthesis using a hyper-spectral camera equipped with liquid crystal tunable filter

Hydrological Research Letters, 5, 88, 92, THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF HYDROLOGY AND WATER RESOURCES, 2011, [Peer-reviewed]
English, Scientific journal, Evapotranspiration over forest surfaces is mainly constrained by environmental and forest structural components through their influence on surface conductance (Gs) and aerodynamic conductance (Ga). Tower based eddy covariance data from 16 forest sites in East Asia (2°S to 64°N) were used to examine the sensitivity of Matsumoto and Nakai models for predicting Gs and Ga, respectively. Daytime dry-canopy data for the growing season were used in this study. Comparisons between model predictions and observed Gs and Ga showed good agreement, suggesting that the models were suitable for predicting Gs and Ga with reasonable accuracy. However, the model for Gs was unable to predict Gs accurately when soil water content was low (∼10%). In this circumstance, effective soil water content and a more comprehensive method for modelling the soil water content function must be used. Gs in East Asia was largely depended on vapour pressure deficit and secondarily on soil water content. Ga was largely affected by leaf area index compared with stand density. - Spatial variations in evapotranspiration over East Asian forest sites. I. Evapotranspiration and decoupling coefficient

English, Scientific journal, Evapotranspiration (ET) is not only a vital component of water budget, but also plays an important role in the energy budget of the earth-atmospheric system, ultimately driving many regional and global scale climatological processes. This paper describes the ET characteristics and factors controlling ET across the 17 forest sites in East Asia (2°S to 64°N latitude). ET was measured using the eddy covariance technique at each site. Daytime dry-canopy data for the growing season were used in this study. Growing season mean ET gradually decreased as latitude increased, with a range of 4.4 to 1.2 mm d−1. The growing season mean decoupling coefficient (Ω) ranged from 0.42 to 0.11 across the studied sites. At low-latitude forest sites, Ω was close to 0.50, indicating that the bulk surface was partially decoupled from the atmosphere and ET was strongly controlled by net radiation and vapour pressure deficit. At high-latitude forest sites, Ω was low (∼0.12), indicating that the bulk surface was well coupled to the atmosphere and ET was mainly controlled by surface conductance. The value of Ω was determined mainly by the ratio of aerodynamic conductance to surface conductance across the studied forests of East Asia. - Reduced atmospheric CH4 consumption by two forest soils under elevated CO2 concentration in a FACE system in northern Japan

English, Larch forests are widely distributed across many cool-temperate and boreal regions, and they are expected to play an important role in global carbon and water cycles. Model parameterizations for larch forests still contain large uncertainties owing to a lack of validation. In this study, a process-based terrestrial biosphere model, BIOME-BGC, was tested for larch forests at six AsiaFlux sites and used to identify important environmental factors that affect the carbon and water cycles at both temporal and spatial scales. The model simulation performed with the default deciduous conifer parameters produced results that had large differences from the observed net ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (RE), and evapotranspiration (ET). Therefore, we adjusted several model parameters in order to reproduce the observed rates of carbon and water cycle processes. This model calibration, performed using the AsiaFlux data, substantially improved the model performance. The simulated annual GPP, RE, NEE, and ET from the calibrated model were highly consistent with observed values. The observed and simulated GPP and RE across the six sites were positively correlated with the annual mean air temperature and annual total precipitation. On the other hand, the simulated carbon budget was partly explained by the stand disturbance history in addition to the climate. The sensitivity study indicated that spring warming enhanced the carbon sink, whereas summer warming decreased it across the larch forests. The summer radiation was the most important factor that controlled the carbon fluxes in the temperate site, but the VPD and water conditions were the limiting factors in the boreal sites. One model parameter, the allocation ratio of carbon between belowground and aboveground, was site-specific, and it was negatively correlated with the annual climate of annual mean air temperature and total precipitation. Although this study substantially improved the model performance, the uncertainties that remained in terms of the sensitivity to water conditions should be examined in ongoing and long-term observations. - Multi-model analysis of terrestrial carbon cycles in Japan: limitations and implications of model calibration using eddy flux observations

Japanese, Scientific journal, The atmospheric behavior of nitrous acid, HONO, was discussed on the basis of field measurements by an annular-denuder or a filter-pack method at four different nature sites in northern Japan, Sapporo (urban), Moshiri (rural), Rishiri (coastal remote) and Teshio (mountainous remote), in terms of their atmospheric chemistry parameters including nitrogen oxides, nitric acid, nitrate aerosol and ozone. The annual mean concentrations of HONO in Sapporo ranged from 36 to 41 nmol m-3 where the concentration level was 11 to 31 times higher than those for the other sites. A different seasonality of the HONO concentration was detected at the different nature site: the urban site showed a maximum in the winter, the remote in the summer, and the rural in the winter and the summer. A heterogeneous reaction between NO2 and H2O on the surface of airborne particles and the ground surface is likely to play a significant role in the nitrous acid formation because the HONO/NOx ratio in ambient air is higher than those by direct emission as reported by Kurtenbach et al. (2001). In the case of the ground-surface heterogeneous reaction, the concentration gradient of HONO is expected to negative correlate with that of NO2 because the deposition of NO2 would induce emissions of HONO into the atmosphere. Actually, in Teshio, the difference between the concentrations of HONO at the heights of 30 m and 10 m positive correlated with that for NO2. Furthermore, the Rishiri measurements showed a significant correlation between the concentrations of HONO and PM10. In addition, Rishiri and Moshiri measurements showed significant correlations between the concentration ratio, HONO/NO2, and absolute humidity. These results strongly support the view that the heterogeneous reactions on the airborne particles prevails in the formation of HONO in the rural and remote areas with considerably low concentrations of NO2. On the other hand, the heterogeneous reaction on the ground-surface reaction plays a significant role in Sapporo, especially in the winter with high NO2 concentrations. In Sapporo, negative correlations were detected in the winter between the concentrations of HONO and NO, and between of HNO3 and O3, which would be attributable to the insufficient conversion of NO2 to HNO3, and further to nitrate species, under urban conditions because of the low concentration of ozone along with high concentrations of NO. These field measurements would indicate that the behavior of nitrous acid is controlled by the chemical reactions of NO2 with H2O, and that this heterogeneous reaction was affected by the NO2 concentration, absolute humidity and O3 concentration. - Multi-model analysis of terrestrial carbon cycles in Japan: reducing uncertainties in model outputs among different terrestrial biosphere models using flux observations

Japanese, The filter-pack method is generally used for the measurement of soluble ion components in aerosol, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid gas, hydrocloric acid gas, and ammonia gas in the air. In this study, the simultaneous measurement of nitrous acid gas using double alkaline impregnated filters of the filter-pack method is being considered for the first time. The filter pack contains five filters, i.e., a Teflon filter, a nylon filter, a first alkaline-impregnated filter, a second alkaline-impregnated filter, and an acid-impregnated filter. In a laboratory experiment, it was found that artifact formation of nitrate and nitrite ions, representing below 1% of the concentration of nitrogen dioxides, occurs in the alkaline-impregnated filter. Thus, the interference on nitrogen dioxides can be estimated from the NO_2^- and NO_3^- content of the second alkaline-impregnated filter. This principle is similar to that of an annular denuder method. In addition, a parallel survey using the filter-pack method and the annular denuder method, which is generally used for the measurement of nitrous acid gas, was carried out in the field for three and half years beginning in October 2003. This was done in order to measure the weekly concentrations of nitrous acid gas in Sapporo. The results showed that nitrous acid concentrations obtained using the two methods were in good agreement because both concentrations were highly correlated (r=0.95); moreover the slope of the correlation curve was close to 1.0, and the intercept was shown to be small: i.e., y=1.09x + 2.28. Thus, it was concluded that the filter-pack method is useful for the monitoring of air pollutants including nitrous acid gas like an annular denuder method. - Evaluation of the transpiration rate of lotus using the stem heat-balance method

Recent research on aerosol dry deposition in forests in East Asia, focusing particularly on field measurements, estimations of deposition rates, and developments of measurement technique, was reviewed to contribute assessments of the impacts of aerosols on vegetation. Some measurements of aerosol deposition by the gradient method indicated that the deposition velocities were in agreement with other experimental results in North America and Europe, and were higher than those calculated by theoretical models. Higher deposition velocities were associated with larger friction velocities and unstable conditions. The deposition velocities were possibly influenced by humidity, due to the growth in size of hygroscopic aerosols and the enhancement of surface collection efficiency. Some estimations of aerosol deposition rates indicated i) high ratios of sulfate to SO2 in deposition rates in remote areas of Japan, ii) high dry deposition of elemental carbon on a tropical forest, and iii) about 10~20% year to-year variations in aerosol deposition, with a higher percentage variation in tropical areas. Regarding aerosol deposition on forest leaves, there was larger deposition in higher parts than in lower parts, and approximately 70% of total aerosol deposition onto forests probably deposit on forest leaves during the leafy season. It is indicated that the relaxed eddy accumulation method could obtain more accurate data on the fluxes of aerosol components than data obtained with the gradient method., Japan Association of Aerosol Science and Technology, Japanese, Introduction scientific journal - Dynamics of Leaf Area Index of 3 kinds of birch species grown under free air CO_2 enrichment (FACE) system

Japanese - 2I1106 Effects of time resolution on the dry deposition estimating of air pollutants(4 Process-4 deposition/4 Process-5 dynamics,General Presentations)

To understand the behavior of metals in forest area, we collected atmospheric aerosol, fallout and river water samples in every two weeks from June of 2002 to December of 2004 in the Teshio Experimental Forest (45°03'N, 142°07'E a. s. 1.66m). And all samples were analyzed by ICP-MS for metals, such as Fe, Al, Ti, Ba, Sr, Mn, Zn, Pb.<BR>Atmospheric concentrations of Fe, A1, Pb, Mn and Sr in both aerosols and fallouts increased in winter. However, the atmospheric Zn and Ba in aerosols increased during winter, but in the fallouts.<BR>In the event of rainfall, Ba, Sr and Mn concentrations in river water, those were mainly plant origin, were decreasing with increasing in the flow. On the contrary, Al and Ti. concentrations in the water, those were mainly soil origin, were increasing in the same period. As for Fe, also soil origin was decreasing in the period. In thaw season, Fe, Ba and Sr concentrations decreased with increasing in flow, however, Al and Zn concentrations increased. In comparison the annual output from the river water with the annual input from the fallouts. As for Al, Fe, Sr and Ba, the output exceeded the input. As for Zn and Pb, the input exceeded the output. As for Mn and Ti, the input and the output were nearly equal., Japan Society of Civil Engineers - Snowmelt runoff observations at a forestry operated basin (2)

In order to better understand the mechanism of gas and particulate reactive nitrogen deposition to forests, we carried out dry deposition measurements in a temperate mixed forest, a cool temperate larch forest and a tropical dry deciduous forest.
These measurements clearly showed the difference in dry deposition process between nitrate and sulfate in PM2.5. The concentration gradients of nitrate from over to under the canopy were significantly higher than those of sulfate, during leafy period in all of the forests. Moreover deposition velocities of nitrate greater than theoretical were observed.
The analyses of numerical models showed that the equilibrium shift of NH4NO3 into the gas phase during the daytime hot canopy can decrease nitrate concentration, and the volatilized HNO3 was immediately removed by the canopy. Therefore, the equilibrium shift enhanced the dry deposition of nitrogen within nitrate.

We have evaluated the effect of advancing snowmelt on the production of inorganic nitrogen, which is available for northern tree, via the change of earthworm, a abundant macro fauna species. As the result of the field manipulation experiment, the advancing snowmelt has increased the production of nitrate in soil. However, the amount of the increased nitrate production was similar between the condition with and without earthworm. Furthermore, the amount of increased nitrate production was similar between the condition with small and large earthworm. These results indicate that, in the forests of northern Hokkaido, the effect of advancing snowmelt on soil inorganic nitrogen production is controlled not by the earthworm and their trait but done by other soil organisms such as soil microbe.

Soil warming experiment was conducted in 6 Japanese forests to evaluate long-term effectof soil warming on the soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Warming experiment was also conducted to Japanese cypress and cryptomeria saplings to evaluate the effect of warming on the growth. Soil warming enhanced heterotrophic respiration at all of 6 forests, but the increase in the dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen content in the soil water was only observed at a cool-temperate mixed forest. Warming decreased CO2 and H2O exchanges of saplings, but did not change the growth rate within 4-month experimental period.

From the observations of aerosol deposition at forests in East Asia, the knowledge on deposition velocities was obtained. In Japanese remote area, the ratio of sulfate deposition to sulfur dioxide deposition was higher than other areas. The majority of elemental carbon deposition onto tropical forests in Southeast Asia is possibly due to the dry disposition process. On forest leaves, there were more deposited aerosols in the upper part than in the lower part and approximately a half of total aerosol deposition onto forests could deposit.
