Monitoring tropical ecosystem services such as carbon stock and biodiversity with satellite remote sensing is essential for addressing climate change and biodiversity loss, but collecting ground truth data is costly. We investigated whether Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can reduce the costs. First, we developed a method to estimate Above-Ground Carbon (AGC) and biodiversity index (mixing ratio of pioneer and late-successional species) based on data derived from UAV-RGB images in four Forest Management Units (FMUs) in Malaysia. Second, we tested whether adding UAV-based ground truth (i.e., estimated carbon and biodiversity index) improves satellite-based models. We built machine learning models to estimate AGC and biodiversity index based on Landsat metrics and inventory data across Malaysia and Indonesia (395 plots). Accuracy was low without local inventory data (287 plots outside the four FMUs; R 2  = 0.43 and 0.46 for AGC and biodiversity, respectively). Adding UAV-based data ( n  = 934) significantly increased the accuracy ( R 2  = 0.51 and 0.48), which was comparable to the model with the full dataset including local inventory data ( R 2  = 0.53 and 0.60). These results underscore that integrating UAV and satellite analyses facilitates the monitoring of ecosystem services in tropical forests by reducing costs while maintaining accuracy.

    Scientific journal, Abstract

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi are functionally important in biogeochemical cycles in tropical ecosystems. Extracellular enzymatic activity of ECM on a ground-area basis is the product of two attributes; exploration capacity (ECM surface-area) and specific enzymatic activity. Here, we elucidated which attribute better explained the ECM enzymatic activity in response to different levels of soil phosphorus (P) and Nitrogen (N) availability in five Bornean tropical rainforests. We determined the surface area of ECM root tips as well as the enzymatic activities per ECM surface area for carbon (C), N and P degrading enzymes in each site. We evaluated the relationship of ECM enzyme activities with the resource availabilities of C (Above-ground net primary production; ANPP), N, and P of ECM by a generalized linear mixed model. The ECM enzymatic activities on a ground-area basis were more significantly determined by specific enzymatic activity than by the exploration capacity. Specific enzymatic activities were generally negatively affected by C (ANPP) and soil P availability. ECM fungi enhance the specific enzyme activity rather than the exploration capacity to maintain the capacity of nutrient acquisition. The less dependence of ECM fungi on the exploration capacity in these forests may be related to the limitation of C supply from host trees. We highlighted the adaptive mechanisms of ECM fungi on nutrient acquisition in tropical ecosystems through the response of enzymatic activity to nutrient availability across the elements.

    Scientific journal, Abstract

Interspecific relationships between growth and survival are critical determinants of tree species diversity maintenance in forests. The trade‐offs between growth and survival in co‐occurring tree species are believed to arise along a continuum of life‐history strategies. For example, co‐occurring species range from those that grow slowly and survive well in resource‐poor environments to those that grow quickly but have low survival rates in resource‐rich environments. However, uncertainties remain regarding how growth–survival trade‐offs are related to species traits, tree sizes or environmental conditions.

We examined how the relationships between species traits and growth–survival relationships shift in response to changes in stem sizes and across census periods with different climate conditions (frequency of strong winds, drought intensity) across 45 co‐occurring tree species based on 23 years of growth and survival records in a warm temperate rainforest on Yakushima Island, Japan. We developed hierarchical Bayesian models of relative growth and survival rates, including leaf traits, wood density and 95‐percentile maximum stem diameter as explanatory variables. We tested the relationships between estimated trait‐mediated growth–survival relationships and the indices of climate events during five census periods.

Each trait's effects on growth–survival relationships differed across the five census periods in response to climate conditions. Interspecific growth–survival relationships affected by a single trait axis for leaves or wood tended to be negative. In contrast, those affected by the maximum stem diameter tended to be positive. Such trends increased with more frequent strong winds or more intense droughts. The single‐trait effects on growth–survival relationships were stronger for smaller sizes than for larger sizes. For all traits combined, we found a significant growth–survival trade‐off only for small‐sized stems in three of five census periods.

Synthesis. Our results indicate that the effect of species traits on the growth–survival relationships depended on tree sizes, the census periods or both in response to the frequency or intensity of climate events. We argue the importance of incorporating spatial and temporal variations in environmental conditions into long‐term data from tree census to predict forest dynamics.

Large within-species variation is observed in sessile organisms, such as forest trees, shrubs and intertidal barnacles. Dealing with those systems consisted of multiple species, this study examined the relationship between within-species, among-individual variations of life-history measures (in particular, size-dependent growth) and among- species coexistence. We quantified within-species variation using long-term repeated census records, applying bias-free new methods. Life-long integration of variation characterized species-level turnover rates. The fast-slow trade-off among species facilitated the equitability mechanism of coexistence.

Conifers of families Podocarpaceae and Araucariaceae can become dominant in mountains and on nutrient-poor soils in tropical forests which are otherwise dominated by angiosperm trees. Conifer dominance increases on more nutrient-deficient soils. On soils with intermediate fertility, conifers are 'long-lived pioneers', which regenerate during rare disturbance events and reside in canopy for a long time. On severely nutrient-deficient soils, conifers regenerate continuously. We suggest that soil fertility affects the growth of angiosperm trees, which modifies the light environments in the forest, and thereby determines conifer dominance. Apparently drought-resistant characters in conifers seem to reflect the adaptation to nutrient deficiency.

We studied the issue of invasive plants into nature reserve area of West Java, Indonesia. We found about 30 invasive plants, Clidemia hirta, Eupatoriumspp. in herb layer, and Maesopsis eminiiin tree layer seemed to threaten the native vegetation. Quinine and teak do also in some areas. Schima wallichiiwhich is often planted to reconstruct native vegetation was diversified weakly in the region, thus the possibility that plantations disturb the genetic diversity seemed to be low.

For the purpose of evaluating coexistence mechanisms of tree species in tropical and subtropical rain forests in South-East Asia, we estimated demographic and allometric parameters in terms of community-wide and species-specific Bayesian probability distributions by employing long-term forest-plot census data. Based on estimated parameters we examined inter-specific trade-offs in demography and allometry. We evaluated contributions of detected trade-offs and disturbance-responses to coexistence by means of the analysis of stratified competition model.

It was predicted that the concentration of soil phosphorus was low due to soil weathering and the residual soil phosphorus would not be available to biota due to its strong sorption with weathered soil minerals in the inland tropical rain forest ecosystems in Borneo. We widely surveyed Borneo and selected forest ecosystems of low phosphorus availability. We studied the ecophysiology of phosphorus-use efficiency and phosphorus acquisition efficiency of trees as well as the roles of soil microbial communities to elucidate the mechanisms of long sustainability of such phosphorus-limited rain forests.

The objectives of this study are to understand the control of the functions of tropical rain forests by tree-species diversity. In order to achieve this goal, we took an innovative approach in that we compared two naturally species-rich (Malaysia) versus species impoverished (Hawaii) tropical rain-forest regions. The working hypothesis was that a greater species pool (i.e. regional species diversity) could provide more nutrient-use efficient species to reduced nutrient availability while a impoverished species pool would provide lesser nutrient-use efficient species to reduced nutrient availability leading to a temporally variable biomass in response to nutrient availability. To test this working hypothesis, we set up one soil chronosequence in each region, along which soil nutrient availability changed due to soil aging and associated geochemical processes. We investigated the above-ground net primary productivity and nutrient-use of the major tree species in each region. The adove-ground net primary productivity was estimated by repeated measures of secondary growth of trees plus litter-fall rate which was measured bi-weekly. The intact leaves were collected from the major trees in each site and wet-digested to analyze foliar minerals. In Hawaii where regional species richness (i.e. species pool) was small, above-ground net primary productivity and biomass increased with increasing soil nitrogen availability towards a peak stage where soil nitrogen and phosphorus were abundant, followed by an abrupt decline phase where soil phosphorus availability declined. By contrast, such an abrupt change did not occur in Malaysia because more phosphorus-use efficient species replaced inefficient species with declining soil-phosphorus availability. Thus our working hypothesis was accepted.

To study the maintenance mechanism of biodiversity on Borneo Island, we conducted research in Merimbun Heritage Park, Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah, Betung Kerihun National Park, West Kalimantan, and Berau, East Kalimantan for 257 days. We made plots of 4ha in Brunei, 6-ha in Kalimantan, and 1.5ha for plant ecological study, and collected 2733 plant specimens. Lowland of Borneo Island is dominated by Dipterocarpaceae, but there are many kinds of Dipterocarpaceae forests. The species numbers of trees bigger than 4.8cm in DBH in 1-ha were ranged from ca 70 to 220, lowest in swamp, the second was riverbank forest, and forest on hill was most rich. The mechanism of coexistence was studied in congeneric species of Sterculiaceae, Meliaceae, and Palmae. Genetic diversity was studied in Licuala and Cyrtostachys of Palmae. The role of animals for seed dispersal was also studied.
