Japanese, Scientific journal, We examined the stress concentration that would occur at grain boundary triple lines during deformation in two copper tricrystals with [011] tilt boundaries; one was a symmetrical tricrystal with respect to the loading axis and the other was an anti-symmetrical one. In principle, the finite element method can provide solutions with prescribed amount of precision for the anisotropic elasticity problem. It was shown that a close approximation was possible by means of a disclination model in elastically homogeneous material. This disclination model was numerically solved with the finite element method proposed in a previous paper (Hosoya, Kato, Sasaki, Trans. JSME, Vol.80, No.819 (2014 ). It was concluded that the disclination model is appropriate for estimating the stress concentration at the grain boundary triple lines in deformed polycrystals. - Back Stress Work Hardening Confirmed by Bauschinger Effect in a TRIP Steel Using Bending Tests

Japanese, The present paper provides a quantitative analysis on the variant change of ferromagnetic martensite driven by the magnetization energy under magnetic field. The feasiblity study of the actuator mechanism using the magnetic-field induced strain is given. The model predicts an upper limit of output power of the actuator : the maximum output force of NiMnGa shape memory alloy is estimated as less than 1 MPa : the output energy is 2 000 times smaller than that of conventional NiTi shape memory alloys driven by heat. - Output power of SMA actuators

Japanese, Shape-recovery stress due to shape-memory effect can be utilized as a power source of SMA-based actuators. Based on experimental and modeling analysis, this study examines the magnitude of the recovery stress in a Nickel-Titanium shape-memory alloy (SMA). When the shape change of a martensite is blocked and the martensite is heated to a temperature above the Af, recovery stress develops to be larger than the stress for superelasticity at the temperature. This result cannot be explained by early works on constitutive equations of shape-memory effect (Tanaka 1986, Brinson 1993). It is found that the one-dimensional model proposed by present authors (Kato, Inagaki, Sasaki 2004) gives a close estimate on the magnitude of recovery stress and its dependence on the prestrain given to martensite. - Stress Analysis of Edge Dislocation in Anisotropic Elastic Media

Japanese, More or less, real metallurgical materials are anisotropic. So, stress field near dislocation in real metal is different from the one calculated under isotropic theory. But it is difficult and complex to calculate stresses near dislocation in anisotropic solid. In this paper, we propose a simple but useful finite element model of an edge dislocation in anisotropic elastic media on the basis of a dislocation model in isotropic media proposed by authors. The stress field will be calculated around an edge dislocation near phase boundary. From the results, it is shown that the model is sufficiently correct to calculate stress fields around an edge dislocation in anisotropic inhomogeneous media. Also, the stresses are approximately affected by the difference between elastic strain energies of two regions with/without dislocation. - Interaction between an edge dislocation and lamellar inclusion with finite length on interface

Large deflection analysis of bending was performed by the finite element method using curved beam elements. The calculation was performed on the basis of the infinitesimally small strain theory and the non linearity due to the change in the loading direction during large deformation was considered. As a result, the deviation from the linear bending deflection appeared. Simultaneously, the deflection of a ski of conventional type with a curving shape was measured by three-point bending where the load was limited within the range of normal use; i.e. the static load applied in the bending was less than 700N, which subjected the curvature of not less than 1.4m. Since the load-deflection relationship obtained was almost exactly linear, no geometrical nonlinearity was found in the bending under the present condition., The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Japanese - 508 Effect of side groove on the crack propagation behavior of the J_

We performed a computer simulation of superelasticity in shape memory alloy by phase field method. Superelasticity occurs by martensitic transformation. We assessed the effect of the parameters; interface width (δ) and interface energy (σ), which are defined to represent the transformation interface in phase field method. Shape recovery of indentations by steel spheres was observed in a nickel-titanium shape memory alloy. The diameter, depth and curvature of indentations before and after shape memory recovery were measured with a laser microscope. A parameter representing the fraction of recovery due to shape memory effect was defined, and the variation of the parameter with the change of indentation force and the diameter of spheres were measured. It was found that the strain beneath the surface of an indentation can be estimated through the empirical relation, 0.2R/R_I, where R is the radius of the indentation and R_I that of the sphere., The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Japanese - 113 Axisymmetric buckling in axially compressed AZ31 magnesium alloy tube

Axisymmetric buckling of cylindrical tubes has been expected to be used for the resistance to impact forces. We have found AZ31 magnesium alloy tubes could show axisymmetric buckling at temperatures higher than 473K, which corresponds to the sharp rise in the tensile ductility of the alloy with increasing temperature. Single crystals of aluminum (99.5% in purity) were prepared by strain-annealing method. Stress-strain curves for <001>, <011> and <111> oriented single crystals were taken at room temperature. During deformation load was released to zero to measure the slope of the stress-strain curve. The present paper shows how to apply the method which Liang, Wada, Kato, Tagawa, Taya and Mori proposed for the calculation of stress-strain curves of tetragonal martensite in FePd polycrystals to monoclinic martensite of NiTi alloys, which are most commonly used among various shape memory alloys. The result implies that, if variant deformation of martensite occurs together with the elastic deformation of martensite lattice, the Young's modulus reduces to 46% of the elastic modulus of the lattice., The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Japanese - Determination of Aspect Ratio and Orientation of an Ellipsoidal Particle by Stereo Observation

Copper thin film is used for the conductor in advanced large-scale-integrated-circuits (LSI) in order to reduce electric resistance and to prevent fracture due to atom migration. A barrier layer is usually placed between the substrate and the film to prevent diffusion of copper atoms. The poor adhesiveness between them, however, sometimes causes interface fracture from the interface edge due to the free-edge effect. Although it is necessary to elucidate the mechanics of the delamination strength at the interface edge, no proper evaluation method has been proposed so far. In this study, an experimental method for the crack initiation is investigated based on the fracture mechanics concept. Especially, the focus is put on the stress singularity near the interface edge. In the experiment, the metal film is sandwiched by rigid substrate and beam so that the plastic deformation of film is constraint. Delamination tests are carried out by means of a loading apparatus, which is a modified Vickers hardness test machine. The experiments, the BEM (Boundary Element Method) analysis and MD (Molecular Dynamics) simulation reveal that the delamination criterion is successfully evaluated by the proposed method. The critical magnitude of the stress intensity factor, which governs the stress field near the edge, is examined for several film/substrate interfaces. Moreover, the crack initiation is governed not only by the external mechanical loading but also by the internal stress introduced in the fabrication process of the film, on the delamination. The experimental investigation shows that the superposition of both influence controls the crack initiation.
