■ Papers- Ambiguous Boundaries of Religious Belief, Behavior, and Belonging in Japan: A Descriptive Analysis of Plural and Cultural Religiosity

Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Wiley, 12 Apr. 2026, [Peer-reviewed], [Last author]
English, Scientific journal, ABSTRACT
This research note analyzes the ambiguous boundaries of religious identity, belief, and ritual behavior in Japan, drawing on data from a nationally representative postal survey conducted in 2024 ( N = 3947). The findings reveal widespread participation in Buddhist and Shinto rituals even among individuals who identify as nonreligious or atheist, as well as the prevalence of overlapping religious affiliations. Beliefs in gods and the afterlife also vary widely and do not align neatly with religious identity categories. These results highlight how religiosity in Japan is often expressed through culturally embedded practices and inherited traditions, rather than formal belief or institutional membership. A comparative review of other national surveys shows that minor changes in question wording can significantly affect reported religiosity. By documenting the plural and diffuse nature of Japanese religiosity, this study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of religion in East Asia and offers methodological insights for future cross‐cultural surveys.

Japanese, Recent depopulation and globalization will transform Japanese society in the near future. While family and community are going through the process of individualization, it is a prerequisite that labor and welfare institutions must be reconstructed regarding individuality. As a result, the state must take up the traditional risk-hedge function of communality, and also promote a sense of self-responsibility due to the current stagnant economy. Therefore people have became more anxious about their life, and their sense of well-being has declined. Under such circumstances religion is no longer in a stable condition. Religions that cannot meet people's needs and aspiration will fade out because of the decline of conventional communality of regions and households, which used to be the economic base of shrine Shinto and temple Buddhism. Referring to current research of happiness and well-being, this paper first studies the relation between peoples' subjective well-being and their social capital, and then discusses the agenda of contemporary religions. People become more satisfied and have a sense of hope when they develop an intimate and meaningful relationship with others, through which they can also feel self-esteem and have a positive attitude. Are contemporary religions able to fulfill these sincere requests?

This paper evaluates the extent to which the theory of social capital contributes to religious studies that focus on various types of social engagement by religions. The first section illustrates the degrading social integration in contemporary Japan, which was described recently as a "no relationship society" and "isolated tribes." It also describes how the public administration promotes the restoration of social capital that omplements social services for disabled and disadvantaged people. Next, sociological reviews are undertaken on the theoretical dimension (in the secondsection), philosophical thought (in the third section), and analytical framework (in the fourth section) in order to consider the hypothesis that involvement in a religious congregation develops the reciprocal and trusting consciousness so that social engagement and participation in civil society are well organized. Then the authorconsiders the cases of American Christian hurches (in the fifth section) and Thai Theravada Buddhist temples (in the sixth section) and critically investigates previous research in terms of their perspective and methodology. Finally, in the conclusion, future challenges for this study will be proposed.

English, This paper was originally presented at the International Symposium on Cultic Studies, held on December 6-8, 2007, at Shenzhen China, which was sponsored by Institute of World Religions, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. This institution made strong effort to study the activities of the Falun Gong inside/outside of China, because Chinese communist party was very concerned about the upsurge of this religious movement and finally banned any activities of Falun Gong in July 22, 1997. Falun Gong, foundered by Li Hongzhi in 1992, rapidly expanded its missionary in China and evoked cult controversy over believers'devotion to Li Hongzhi in China. Conversely, human rights watch groups and refugees of Falun Gong in western countries criticized Chinese government and strongly demanded immediate cessation of its repression. Although Chinese government as well as Chinese Academy has not changed official position to Falun Gong, they seem to have acknowledged that a cult issue is problematic. Chinese history has too many cases to enumerate spiritual cults and religious millennialism that were heretic(淫祠) and subversive(邪教) from the perspective of successive imperial dynasties. Even if Falun Gong is considered to have the same character, it cannot be sufficient reason of political restriction in a country where freedom of religion constitutionally guaranteed. They consider the necessity of legitimacy not only of Chinese legislation but also of universal criteria, so that they called experts of cult issue from the western countries(England, Germany, Canada, USA)as well as Asian (India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan). I was only participant from Japan and reported Japanese cult controversy in present day Japan. This paper first introduces recent cult controversy and review cultic studies in Japan. Then I will illustrate major controversial cults(Aum Supreme Truth Cult-Aleph in present, Unification Church, and JMS from South Korea) and minor cultic groups (Hallelujah Community Church, Makomo Shrine, and Home of Heart). The latter is small independent Religious Corporation or self-awareness therapy group. Last I will explain about the social background where such cults and spiritual movement emerged in Japan and point out the fragility that some Japanese as well as victimized cult members hold, which should be overcome in near future. - Sociology, Thai Studies in Japan,1996-2006:Globalization and Regional Social Change

5, 1, 29, 53, Apr. 2015
This paper considers social exclusion in modern society through the lens of child poverty, arguing that exclusion should be addressed through provision of mental support as well as livelihood security. In particular, the practice of active listening, which aims to respond to modern people's needs for recognition and self-esteem, is examined. The case studies considered here show that self-recognition and recognition by others are important elements of care. Moreover, clinical religion guided by religious scholars and Buddhist monks should not be limited to unidirectional active listening between care-givers and care receivers, but should be the basis for constructing reciprocal relations in community. This point is illustrated through the case of a Buddhist priest in Fujisato-cho, Akita prefecture, who became the key person in creating collaboration between the local administration and social welfare providers.

Japanese - Is Religion Social Capital in Japan?
Sakurai Yoshihide; Terazawa Shigenori, Journal of the Graduate School of Letters, 7, 21, 29, Mar. 2012
This paper was originally presented at the Beijing Forum 2010, held on November5th-7th, 2010, at Beijing China, which was sponsored by the Peking University, the BeijingMunicipal Commission of Education and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies. Theobjective of this forum is to promote the study of humanities and social sciences in the Asia-Pacific region, and the theme of 2010 was"The Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All―Commitments and Responsibilities for a Better World."This term "harmony"was used by the Chinese state leaders, and given the rapid transitrailway the name"和諧号."Inside China, it is used as"harmonious society(和諧社会)"and alsoit means the realization of the"harmonious world (和諧世界)"in international relations. PRCPresident Hu Jintao proposed the concept of"the harmonious world"at the Asia African summitmeeting in 2005,when it was extended to various fields such as politics, economy, culture, security, and environment. It is China to carry out not by an idea but by a substantial policy and stateapparatus in order to adjust the structure of the conflicts among different interest groups as wellas nations. The Beijing forum is a part of politics that aimed at "harmonious society,"and the world ofarts and sciences is not unrelated to political practice, either. Therefore,my paper was given thepolitical meaning that contributes to the construction of the humanities researchers'networkwhich leads to "harmonious world"of East Asia.In addition to that,it is obvious that religions carry out charitable actions under the controlof Chinese religious policy. Probably, in that sense my argument that discussed whether religionscontributed to the formation of social capital was understood as a thing in alignment withChinese political intention. It is the right science in China that a scientific result contributes topolitics.Apart from Chinese context,my paper aims at seeing the social context of religion carryingout social actions in Japanese society. This paper focuses on the role of religious institutions, organizations, and the spirit of cultivating reciprocity, trust, and social networks, which developssocial engagement. First, I will glance at "individualization of a family, neighborhood, andworkplace"in recent Japan, which resulted from the low birthrate and longevity, differentiationin class and regions, and various social changes in globalization. Second, I will review thetheory of social capital and the academic literatures of social services and social capital provide by Christianity in the US and Theravada Buddhism in Thailand. Last, I will extend my argument to the case of Japan, where both religious pluralism and secularism are institutionalized., Graduate School of Letters, Hokkaido University, English - アイヌ民族の宗教意識と文化伝承の課題

Sakurai Yoshihide, Journal of the graduate school of letters, 6, 27, 38, Mar. 2011
The content of this paper was originally presented under the title of 'Fragmented Society and the Popularity of Spiritualism in Japan 1990-2000,' as a presenter at the Meeting of International Society for the Sociology of Religion, Santiago de Compostela, Spain, July 25-31, 2009. Then I was invited to deliver special lecture under the title of "Spirituality Boom and Declining of Religious Order," at the Research Institute of Humanity and Social Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria, October 19, 2009.This research examines the relation between spiritualism and contemporary society fragmented by globalized capitalism and neo-liberal reform in Japan. Since the end of 1990s the spiritualism movement has changed from the subculture of `Spiritualism Otaku' to the mainstream culture represented by the extensive exposure of some fortune-teller and healer in the prime time TV programs. The cyber space as well as shelves in bookstores are occupied by various schools of thoughts and practices of spiritualism that include alternative therapy, slow life , and multi-level marketing. This paper illustrates a case study involving a healing salon, called `Shin-Sekai (God World)' and a spiritualist convention, `Spi-Con,' in which young people as well as middle aged women joined and purchased the peculiar packaged fortune. They worry about the degradation of their relatively prosperous lives that were equally provided by the long-term economic growth and welfare in Japan. The more they become socially vulnerable because of job competitions and family problems, the more likely they are dependent on spiritualism. Since neo-liberalism policy imposes us self-help endeavor, we have to energize and comfort ourselves by means of positive thinking and various healing methods., Hokkaido University, English - Transition and reformation of rural-urban relations in Thailand: from the perspective of social exclusion and inclusion
The journal of Thai studies, 11, 89, 106, 2011
This paper reviews research in rural sociology, sociology of regions and communities, and Thai studies which study the transition and reformation of rural-urban relations in Thailand, and then illustrates the agenda of modern Thai society from the perspective of social exclusion and inclusion. This concept has been widely used in Europe to integrate socially excluded people such as ethnic minorities, jobless persons, and disabled people into civil society through workfare rather than welfare. Even developing countries have recently begun to use this idea which has displaced the concept of poverty and underdevelopment and focused on inequality and unbalanced industrialization. As a society attains more developed country status with the maturation of democracy and communications media, people tend to feel relative deprivation rather than absolute deprivation and then demand social equity and social inclusion policy from the government through social and political movements. When we apply this social system methodology to Thai society, the relations between rural and urban areas could be considered not as a dichotomy but as a continuum. Migration from rural to urban areas strengthens their politico-economic relations and standardizes the consumerism of the urban lifestyle in rural areas. Moreover, progress in regional development by governments as well as NGOs/NPOs and the influx of foreign labor into the bottom layer of Thai society undermines rural communal and reciprocal human relations where class differentiation in rural areas and lack of social support occurs.Theories of social exclusion and inclusion policy are analytical and normative so that the scope of agenda and degree of responsiveness varies as a function of civil society and citizenship. How can we weigh the agenda of rural-urban relations in social science in Thailand? We should consider geographical space, the multicultural dimension, and mode value of socially excluded people from family and community who are human-trafficked laborers from neighboring countries, abandoned street children from dysfunctional families and child exploitation rings, and distressed people in society's ultra bottom layer., Japanese - Practices and challenges of the Graduate School of Letters for an English training session

Religion and Ethics)
SAKURAI Yoshihide, Journal of religious studies, 83, 2, 453, 478, 30 Sep. 2009
This paper studies the "cult problem" and points out that both cults and religious groups have common features when they expand their membership. A religious community which specializes in a propagation system builds an authoritarian system that assumes a mentoring program in order to improve the ability of social ministry, fundraising, and controlling members' belief system as well as their daily lives. We can look at the repressive and exploitative action of cult leaders towards members as well as towards the general public, which has been recently criticized by pastors as an example of controversial churches and religions that are regarded as "cultic groups." The cult critics-such as counselors, attorneys, and scholars who supported cult victims-effectively criticized particular cults, and addressed their social problem, rather than philosophers and scholars who fundamentally insist on the compliance of morality and law. Social ethics that is constructed on the process of solving social problems develops a boundary between cults and religions, which clarifies the tension between ethics and contemporary religion., Japanese Association for Religious Studies, Japanese - 孤立化する若者とカルト-親密性の綱引きをはじめた大学から

Japanese Association for Religious Studies, Japanese - Cult problems on campus: why were students involved in the "Setsuri" (providence) cult group?
Journal of higher education and lifelong learning, 15, 1, 14, Dec. 2007
On July 28, 2006 the Asahi Shimbun began to critically report the controversy about the Christian Gospel Mission (called "Setsuri" in Japan), and Japanese belatedly acknowledged cult problems on campus. Jung Myung Seok, the founder of this cult, was internationally arraigned by the Korean police on suspicion of rape of female disciples and he escaped overseas in 1999, finally being arrested in China on May 12, 2007. In Korea and Japan there are allegedly several hundred victims. Providence conducted controversial proselytization on campuses and got approximately two thousand members in Japan. They concealed actual information about Providence in terms of the theology, the founder, and organization and set up various sports and cultural circles camoufl aging its missionary work object.According to the investigation by Asahi News Company, former members of Providence, and the Student Affairs Division of Hokkaido University, Providence has a church in Sapporo and proselytizes on the Hokkaido University campus. Faculty members should realize the fact that students in Hokkaido University are exposed to their masked proselytization. We must also take measures to protect the students' right to safely study on campus and their freedom of religion. So far there has been little academic research concerning Providence except for the authors' report in the monthly Journal "Chuou Kouron," issued in October, 2006, titled 'How should we protect students from controversial campus missions.' I conducted additional research into former members of Providence and herein I illustrate their beliefs and behavior not only for faculty members of Hokkaido University but also for all student affairs offi cials and professors to understand the actual nature of Providence and the risk of their free campus mission. The contents of this paper are as follows: Chapter 1 introduces the reports and investigations of Providence. Chapter 2 explains the history and theology of Providence. Chapter 3 analyzes the method of recruitment and proselytization of new members and their daily mission work. Chapter 4 discusses the controversial mission of Providence and its harmful effect on students. The last chapter proposes possible measures to confront the controversial mission on campus.,

Although sexual harassment by superiors in schools, offices, and molestation on streets and trains have been appearing in every morning paper in Japan, such news in religious institutions are rarely reported except for scandals by controversial new religions. In orthodox Christianity, sexual abuse has been a taboo. However, on April 25th, 2005 a pastor, 61 years of age,was arrested for allegedly raping seven junior high school girls and molesting other women in his church, "Seishin Tchuo Kyokai (Sacred Central Church)." On February 21st, 2006, he received a sentence of 20 years imprisonment. This pastor studied theology with Pentecostal church in Korea and founded his independent church in 1986, then expanded his mission to include 22 branch churches, 57 vice pastors, and approximately 1,300 believers. Since this incident, most of the embarrassed members have defected, yet a few branches still hold faith with him. Japanese orthodox Christianity could not expand its missionary to the general public in Japan (less than 1%) and suffered from aging of church members and budget deficits. On the other hand, Pentecostal church movement has been popular among young and middle aged Japanese. Excessive enforced missionary work, donations and devotion to a religious superior are controversial issue among Japanese Christians. This paper studies sexual harassment by pastors as a typical case of spiritual abuse in cultic churches, which has been argued by several Christian activists criticizing "cults." They insist that the cult controversy should not be limited in new religions, but rather be extended to the imbalanced relation between all charismatic leaders and true believers in all religions. By adding more cases, I will illustrate Japanese spiritual landscape, where people seek antidote of meaninglessness and salvation from competitive society, but replaced their hope by delusive convictions, and as a result, suffered a tragic ending., Hokkaido University, English - Temples and Rural Community in Northeast Thailand: Complete Enumeration Survey in Kamalasai District

Global society in the 21st century cannot help facing terrorism by religious extremists and damage by "cults" that conduct illegal recruitment and fundraising. In Japan Aum scattered sarin gas in the subways in 1995 and killed twelve and injured more than 5,500 citizens. It took ten years for Asahara, the founder of Aum, to receive a death sentence in Tokyo District Court and his disciples who committed homicides received the same penalties as well as life sentences. However,by just judging them Japanese society can not avoid danger of terrorism by "cults". At least, Aum changed its name to Aleph but as it kept its dogma and its organization, it maintains approximately 1,500 followers. According to "religious freedom" which was guaranteed in the Constitution,Japan tolerates the people who have various beliefs and religious corporations that are called "cults". In this article, in chapter 1 similarities and differences between the terrorism by Islamic extremists in recent years and the Aum case will be considered. Chapter 2 describes the religious characteristics of Aum from the relation between the founder and the disciples and in chapter 3, an overview of the Aum trial will be explained. Chapters 4 and 5 review a discussion argued in court, over whether disciples were mind-controlled by the founder of this cult. Then,in chapter 6,characteristics of a risk society will be scrutinized, and it will be concluded that it is inevitable that "the cult problem" occurs and various measures against it are taken. "Religious freedom" increases risk of the religious problems. Risk management and regulation obstruct liberty and democratic society. In this dilemma,we have no choice but to cope carefully with the problems of modern society., Hokkaido University, English - Salvation or Abuse? : Case Studies of Spiritual Abuse in Japanese Religions

Since the Sarin Gas attack conducted by Aum in 1995 "cult controversy" has been major social problem among Japan. However, it has been fading as news topic due to a series of political major incidents such as Terrorism in September 11th in new Millennium, Japanese Abductees' return form North Korea in 2002, and Iraq War in 2003. Although the mass media forgets cult problems, parties concerned have been struggling with them. They are innocent civilian victims of violence and supporting groups composed of attorneys, counselors, and researchers. Most of those scholars are psychologists and psychiatrists who regard disciples in cults as "mind controlled" and conduct their exit counseling. So far few sociologists of religion in Japan study manifold aspects of cult controversy.<BR>This paper first overviews the origin of "cult" and its terminological usage, second critically scrutinizes theories of cults developed in micro, mezzo, and macro sociological dimension. Then new agenda will be suggested.<BR>First in micro level social area, 1) the theory of affiliation/conversion and defection/apostasy of sociology, and 2) the theory of "brain washing" and "mind control" of psychology are examined.<BR>Second in mezzo level social area, 1) how sociology of religion developed the typology of cult movements to analyze their radical antagonism against established social order and 2) how anti-cult movements have constructed the images and characters of cults to discriminate them from new religions, are explained.<BR>Third in macro level social area, 1) the anthropological theory of revitalization movements applied in cargo cult movements in Melanesia and 2) cultural nationalism in sociology applied anti-cult movements in the US and Europe, are discussed. Both deter the influx of foreign culture by revitalizing their indigenous and conventional one.<BR>Last concept of civil spirit and social order developed in cult controversy is studied., Hokkaido Sociological Association, Japanese - Theravada Buddhism and Regional Development in Northeast Thailand(Section 9)(

SAKURAI Yoshihide, Religion & society, 9, 9, 43, 65, 14 Jun. 2003
The Unification Church of Japan has been criticized since the mid-1980s by the "victims" of its fraudulent sales of spiritual goods, as well as by "survivors" who disaffiliated from this religion. They accuse the Unification Church of proselytizing and coercing illegally, and have won lawsuits in the Supreme Court and Sapporo District Court in 2001 and in Tokyo and Niigata in 2002. The reasons for those judgments are 1) the Unification Church intentionally concealed its name and activities from novice members; 2) fanned their anxieties to elicit large donations and proselytize new members; 3) the Unification Church breached informed consent and appropriate guidance for the plaintiffs, and as a result it has a responsibility ex delicto to compensate them for their claims. Some psychiatrists and psychologists have regarded their affiliation to the Unification Church as coerced conversion by means of "mind control techniques", within a "cultic" system. Such criticism of controversial religions has provoked the controversy of "cult and mind control" among sociologists of religion who doubt the evidence of self proclaimed victims and survivors. The author considers this anti-cult criticism, but questions the explanatory theory of social influence and/or thought reform. This paper studies the conversion and indoctrination process of members of the Unification Church of Japan from the viewpoint of gender theory. Gender means the social attribution of maleness/femaleness that explains substantial unequal distribution of power and status between men and women. When they engage in religious practices according to the gender code prescribed in patriarchal religious ideology, female members not only internalize subjugation physically and spiritually but also reproduce the structure of the religion. In line with feminist researchers who have pointed out "abuses" of female disciples in cults and devotees in conservative religious sects, this research also finds the gender ideology in the Unification Church. First, female devotees were indoctrinated in the peculiar patriarchal family ideology of the Unification Church by means of self-development seminars and fortune telling by name and familial lineage. Second, they came to enter into "sacred marriages" through mass weddings that create "true families" of "True Parents," Sun Myung Moon couples. The more the discrepancy between this ideological family and their own actual family grew, the more they were motivated to seek salvation. The Unification Church efficiently set the ideology of subordination as "Individual Perfection.", The Japanese Association for the Study of Religion and Society, Japanese - III

The purpose of this paper is to clarify how the right of self-decision, so-called secular ideology, came to intervene in the territory of the religious system, by describing the age and social circumstances of the "cult controversy" after the Aum criminal incidents and law suit of the Unification Church in Japan. The recent cult controversy is not confined to a specific religion and its violence. Rather, it is related to what extent secular society has approved the unusual recruitment and indoctrination conducted by some specific religions.<BR>Claims of those who suffered mind-controlled by cults can be considered to be the evaluation that the right of self-decision is violated, and it is a practical theory for exit counseling to pull out the believers of cults and return them to their families. Religious recruitment is conducted through the paternalistic idea that it is good for the recruited. The same is the case with an exit counseling in which counselors and families regard cult members as deceived and controlled. They focus on the violence of cults and violation of religious self-decision of ex-members. Conversely, those cults and members criticize such forced de-conversion. The suit filed by ex-members of the Unification Church in Japan can be considered a case claiming the restoration of self-decision.<BR>On June 29th, 2001 a judge decided that the Unification Church should compensate twenty ex-members for financial and psychological damages. The reason is that they were recruited and indoctrinated illegally, not disclosing the name and activities of the church and threatening them into being believers. This judgment was epoch-making in the point that it showed that legal intervention was possible in a religious problem. In addition it will have strong influence on religious orders and scholars of religion, shocked by the declaration that defines the position of contemporary religion as being subordinate to social order., Hokkaido Sociological Association, Japanese - OTANI Eiichi, KAWAMATA Toshinori & KIKUCHI Hioo (eds.), Kochiku Sareru Shin-nen: Shyukyo Shyakaigaku no Identity wo Motomete

Since the 1980s the word Phrasongnak-phathanaa (development monk) has been used by some NGO activists and researchers who concern themselves with rural developments and evaluate monks' leadership in communities. This research will clarify the history of cooperation between development-oriented policy and the Thai Buddhist Council, the connection between NGO activities and the practices of monks, and the relationship between the rural community and folk Buddhism. To define the role of monks in the modernization of Thailand precisely enables one to evaluate the net possibility of monks' leadership in rural development. First, fee evidence that monks' apparently alternative attitude has been influenced by the development policy initiated by General Sarit Thanarat can be seen in my data collected in 1996 and 1997 through interviews with more than thirty monks in twelve northeastern provinces. However, the monk's method of development is also deeply embedded in Buddhist tradition. In order to get rid of bad habits and consumerism they invite villagers to meditation practice, which originated from Runphu Man's sub-sect in the Thammayut. And local monks have conserved the traditional medicine and magical techniques for curing. Second, if we limit our focus in rural development, we can easily find monks' contribution. However, if we consider the problem over at the community level, we have to admit that Buddhist virtue cannot always help to find the right answers in complex capitalist economy. The well-known forest monk Maha Bua hoped for Thai national reconstruction on the verge of bankruptcy and then initiated traditional merit making ritual, Bun Phaphaa festival, to collect gold and dollars for liquidation of the IMF debts. Many ordinary villagers and students donated their small belongings, which would help liquidate the debts of developers in the bubble economy. That is the unexpected result that Monk's and people's self-renunciation could regenerate class society. Third, there is a paradox that a monk who designs development cannot be a development monk. Those monks who have enough funds for development are generally famous by virtue of asceticism and/or magical practices to fulfill people's secular desires. Many laymen donate generously to monks for merit making, even if they are not interested in development. Monks and NGO workers have not been successful in fund-raising, by simply advocating development. Therefore, it is doubtful that monks would be development leaders and/or supporters if NGOs and government offices supplied sufficient knowledge and technologies for development., The Japanese Association for the Study of Religion and Society, Japanese - Cult Controversy and Anti-Cult Movement in Japan since l995: Case Study of a New Religious Cult, the Tenchi-Seikyo, Affiliated with the Unification Church

This paper examines the formation of the identity of labors migrating from rural areas to Bangkok megalopolis in Thailand and also analyses individual laboring and living process structuring their identity. Recent years have seen researches focusing on labor-management relations and the way of laborer's behavior in Japanese companies starting up activities in southeast Asia, However, there is little attention to laborer's life structure. Therefore most of them explain high ratio of job-hopping of laborers as those preferring evaluation by cash to working relationships in general, then this cultural oriented behavior disturbs technology transformation and skill formation in firms.
However, this view with the reference to cultural personality regulating labor's consciousness fails to account for the central problem as follows :
1) What kind of working and living conditions has generated this labor's attitude in a Japanese manufacturer Thailand ?
2) How Thai socioeconomic situation and Japanese firm organization has reproduced labor's life as well as Thai capitalist society ?
In conclusion, 1) labor's life tactics giving profit in a short period the highest priority for the reproduction of their family of orientation and/or procreation prefers hard labor and jobhopping in pursuit of good wages. 2) This labor's preference is reinforced by the absence of Japanese management system characterized by welfare facilities and prospects for career promotion which motivate labors to be skillful and work in a long time. 3) Japanese companies do not apply this management to labors in Thailand, because they can benefit from low cost of recruitment of superfluous labor force supplied from rural areas.
Added to these findings, detailed information on labor's consciousness and their life structure is given by this case study conducted in 1995 at K Pencil Co. Ltd. Thailand established at the export industrial estate since 1991., The Japan Sociological Society, Japanese - 「東北タイ地域開発に果たす僧侶の役割」

The development movements based on village community and agriculture that have emerged in contemporary Thailand insist on self-reliance utilizing traditional culture and indigenous methods. Dr. Atsushi Kitahara gave the name 'populist movement for restoration of community' to their development theory and activities. He also criticized the discourse of 'community culture' and 'people's wisdom' as they lack feasibility for rural development due to negligence of the importance of social policy for the improvement of the agrarian sector.<BR>This paper examines the theory of community culture and the planning for social development proposed by Dr. Chattip Nartsupha, and also discusses questions of his theory and methodology brought up by Dr. Kitahara and other critics.<BR>The community culture school of thought, named from Dr. Chattip, its advocate, is self-reflective recognition of Thai history and society, and it raises discursive problems among foreign researchers. Their empirical research methods are confronted with the practical ones of development workers and advocates. The dimension of our discussion has changed from social facts, the objective of sociological and historical research, to culture, and the interpretation of social facts. Therefore, their practical knowledge cannot be dismissed as discourse or false consciousness because culture is in itself idealistic and ideological. Moreover the priority of the right of representation may be claimed. Recently, the thought of community culture advocated by some intelligence, NGO workers, and village leaders, has been adopted by the government as new policy for rural development and in cultural affairs. This discourse has come to be the official one in formatting social reality in rural areas.<BR>How could foreign researchers criticize discourses and study cultural matters of Thailand? As they have a remote interest, they can point out political problems, that is, the possession and control of culture, and discuss the process of social reproduction by cultural identification. This unintended result of the discourse of the community culture school of thought is one of those awaiting solutions., Hokkaido Sociological Association, Japanese University Education and Area Studies in Northeastern Thailand : Mahasarakham University in 1997

Although the differentiation of the rural community and the labor market of the city have been an object of area studies in Thailand, there has been little research on the educational system and institutions in order to investigate phases of social change. However, in recent Thai industry, the businesses of information and communication, service, and finance and investment have surpassed those of manufacturing in terms volume of business. It may be said that Thai society has reached the late capitalist and/or consumer society stage. Nowadays commercial educational services play a supplementary role in providing knowledge and information for those building academic careers as well as furnishing symbolic rewards. Parents in the city often force their children to attend cram schools to study English, computer, and subjects for entrance exams to prestigious high schools and universities. Conversely, even village children usually enter high school and, if possible, vocational college, with a view to becoming white-collar workers. Therefore, family budgets bear considerable educational expenses, thus generating related business in undeveloped areas.<BR>I stayed to carry out research at the Research Institute of Northeastern Art and Culture of Mahasarakham University from March till December 1997. This brief report introduces the educational condition of Mahasarakham city, which has aimed at provincially based education related industries and then focuses on how the university institutionalizes area studies of northeastern Thailand and researches development activities there.<BR>The point of the second topic is that the thought of community culture has been built into the curriculums of the community development BA and Thai studies MA of Mahasarakham University. This problematic discourse, provoked by Dr. Chattip Nartsupha and et.al., and NGO advocates, has become the official theory used to interprets social reality there. According to this method, those who have majored in this course of study execute development programs. Therefore, the fact that social discourse produces development activities should be the first concern of researchers of area studies of northeastern Thailand., Hokkaido Sociological Association, Japanese- The Formation of a New Religion andIts Conflict with Community

This paper will first outhine the brief history of Aum-Shinrikyo and the charges of destructive action towards citizens, as well as the discursive arguments about what cause produced such a religious sect in contemporary Japan. Last year, special TV programs about Aum-Shinrikyo's affairs monopolized the Japanese media, and some journalists and scholars, critical of the new religion, introduced 'Mind-Control theory' from the USA.<BR>This analysis will secondly focus on the mind-control techniques that a destructive cult uses to establish control over believers. The founder and leaders of Aum-Shinrikyo are suspected of having persuaded innocent young people to commit awful crimes. However, mind-control cannot be conceptually distinguished from other social interaction processes such as socialdzation (education establishes social and cultural values in the minds of students), personal communication (salesmen attempt to manipulate people into buying products) and mass communication (commercialism arouses desire for consumption; government controls administrative inteligence... Those processes sumely shape individual thought and direct action toward particular points of view. Therefore, the mind-control theory is not logical in terms of sociology and social psychology. Rather, it has come to be used when labeling certain religious groups. Also, the pejorative use of the word 'cult' sometimes occurs in these cases. When we try to understand the conversion and religious activities of believers, we should not consider them deceived but realize their motivation and the circumstances surrounding their conversion .. even in the case of a cult.<BR>Lastly, I have to add that the members of sect's cannot abandon their responsibility concerning the sect's crimes by using the mind-control discourse: they were deceived and then they suffered. I believe that for the sake of our dignity as a people, we Japanese should bear the responsibility for war crimes such as the invasion of China and Korea, even if our grandfathers had been deceived by the militaristic government and unwillingly sent there., Hokkaido Sociological Association, Japanese - The Formation of Religious Practices and Social Change : A Case Study of Religious Traditions in Rural Community Northeastern Thailand
Sakurai Yoshihide, Japanese sociological review, 46, 3, 327, 347, 30 Dec. 1995
This paper deals with the religious change in northeastern Thailand, indicating the transformation of social conditions that support the continuance of the customary religious practices of village people. The reason that operationally supposes religious practice as customary one is as follows :
1) The analysis of customary practice (habitus) that internalizes the social structure occupies a pivotal place to research both the formation and reproduction of social structure. Therefore, religious symbolism and rites of customary religious practice render that social configuration. Formerly, S.J. Tambiah noted the functional correlation between the reciprocal symbolism configuration and reciprocity between successive generations in both family and village community. However, if we proved that the reciprocal ethic found in a monk 's ordination or a memorial service for the dead, was normative for social process, we should validate the social context in which reciprocal ethic are relevant to social action. Actual life process and emic knowledge make that context.
2) To consider the conditions of continuance of customary religious practice could specify the causes of its change and/or persistence. Causes are whether or not a) rites change their performance ; b) the discourse of customary religious practice cannot be valid for the social context, e.g. in labour exchange and property inheritance ; c) the community where village members internalize customary religious practice vanishes.

SAKURAI Yoshihide, Contemporary sociological studies, 8, 28, 59, 1995
This paper deals with the new religious movements in Thailand, which represents the conflict between ecclesiastical Theravada Buddhism, Thai Sangha, and its reformist activities, e.g. the rational meditation training by Wat Phra Thammakaay, asceticism of Santi Asok commune, and the development programme by Buddhist monks. So far Thai kingship historically has patronized Thai Sangha, in return Thai Sangha has legitimated Thai kingship (governance). Recently this reciprocal combination is in a critical condition of political legitimacy. Though it is said that the king has the right to govern so long as he governs rightly in dharma-raja Buddhist policy, mass media often discloses the corruption of paternalistic government monopolized by military and business circles. And Thai sangha also cannot meet the rational and individualistic consciousness of the emerging middle class, which contradicts magical rites and festival centered Buddhism. New religious movements carved cultural niche in politico-religious vacuum of social legitimacy.<BR>To consider these movements not only in Thai modernization process but in post-capitalistic society's crisis, this paper discusses the contemporary conflicts in the formation of individual identity. According to A. Melucci, new social movements in post-industrial society tend to unmask the dominant codes produced by complex society and protest against the manipulation of information and cultural code in symbolic collective actions. The third world develops their country and people based on western capitalist and modernization ideology which subjects the ordinary people to the backward-ness on an objective scale. Thai religious leaders refuse this development discourse and want their own identity to utilize their traditional cultures, and sometimes reform them to symbolize their collective identities. This strategy holds to both ethno-nationalism and fundamentalism in other areas, actually they succeeded in mobilizing people to make imagined community with exclusive enthusiasm., Hokkaido Sociological Association, Japanese Shinユichi Asano "The Social Theories on Global Society and Migration Workers"

This paper deals with Thai Theravada Buddhist memorial services for the dead. The Thai family obeys the matrilocal residence rule and the cognatic kinship structure. As a result the theory of ancestor worship suggested by M. Fortes et al. cannot be applied. In his thoery ancestor worship is the ritualization of filial piety, which compels sons to accept the father's jural authority. It is then necessary to develop a new theory to more fully explain the social implications of the rites for ancestors in terms of sociolgy.<BR>This report refers to the literature of peasant community studies in northeast Thailand and uses data from a rural village in Udon Province, northeast Thailand. This data was collected from January to March, 1991.<BR>The analysis shows the following :<BR>1) Memorial services for the dead parents performed by children have the built-in norm of reciprocity between successive generations, even in a loosely structured family.<BR>2) Actual cooperation in cultivating, harvesting, and consumption of rice creates reciprocal relationships between family members and kin.<BR>3) The khwan ritual practiced by the elder generation raises the morale of the young, and Buddhist rituals performed by the younger generation transfer merit to the elders. This is a symbolic representation of reciprocity between successive generations in a peasant community.<BR>4) The share of merit given in memorial services is allotted to all participants, and this integrates the family into the community., Hokkaido Sociological Association, Japanese - Self Evaluation in Junior Colleges

This paper studies the theory of ancestor worship suggested by M. Fortes et al. According to him, ancestor worship is the ritualization of filial piety which compels sons to accept fathers' jural authority, metamorphosing it into ancestors' mystical authority. Ancestor Worship is inextricably tied to the patriarchal family structure. This discussion will center on two points : 1) the interdependence of successive generations (fathers and their eldest sons) in the rites for the dead : 2) the correlation between ancestral rites and agrarian family structure.
The data is from Kurosawa, a village in Yamagata Prefecture. This analysis reveals the following things :
1) The temple Choushuji has a folk ritual in which the pictorial votive offerings of marriage are given for the unmarried dead children. If these are not given, it is believed, one who does not have any legitimate successor cannot attain ancestorhood and will become a ghost muen-hotoke. The research of genealogical relations between the dead and the dedicator, indicates that eldest sons were dedicated by their fathers, while siblings by their mothers or elder siblings. This reveals the mutual dependence between a father and his eldest son, which goes with the fact that today, as in the past, an eldest son exclusively has a preeminent right of inheritance, especially due to his status as a household head and a citizen of the village.
2) In contemporary Kurosawa, the rites of ancestor worship are practiced more frequently in agrarian families than in wage-earning ones; in stem families than in conjugal ones; in a household of higher rank than in a one of lower. And the greater the number of generations in a household's history, or the more a household retains a patriarchal filiation, the more ancestral rites are practiced.
In short, it is validated in quantitative analysis that ancestor worship still closely related to some of the characteristics of patrilineal family structure., The Japan Sociological Society, Japanese - Ancestor Worship and Family Structure in a Rural Community

Like the United States, Italy, Russia, Turkey, India, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan can also extract one-dimensional common religiosity. Common religiosity affects prayer, meditation, mystical experiences, happiness, altruism, and cultural activities. Common religiosity is also related to these items in Japan.
The common religiosity did not change much in Japan, the United States, and Turkey surveyed before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This may indicate that religion is less influenced by changes in the times.

This team reconsidered the concept of “public religions” which was proposed by Jose Casanova, by extending his theoretical premise of Christianity in the West to the implicit and diversified religions in the East and a part of Slavic areas. In those areas conventional religions and transnational religions participated in public sphere through political and social engagement.
Specifically, we conducted our research on religions and the relations to their regimes in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Mongol in East Asia, Thailand, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh in Southeast and South Asia, and Poland and Ukraine in peripheral Slavic regions. We found that several political religions in those countries and the legacy of post-socialist countries, which extended religious involvement in public sphere through bargaining with the state and its regulatory enforcers.

This research aims to study how Japanese religions function on the well-being of regional residents who suffer industry decline and depopulation, by social survey, holding international workshops, and publishing influential papers and the book, Shiawase no shukyogaku ( Religious Studies on Well-being) from Hozokan publishing.
Main finding is that although religious corporations such as a temple, shrine, and church declined due to aging of members and regional depopulation, some religions functioned to make social capital in regions by social actions which involved residents into religious events and members of religions into regional activities in reverse.

This is a result of research on village civil society (prachakhom) as the basis for the emergence of civil society and development in Thailand’s northeastern region. We concluded that prachakhom was the foundation of the formation process for Civil Society. Prachakhom as a gathering of people has been an integral part of Thai society, while the civil society movement was a new idea derived from the West. In this research, we intend to analyze many aspects of civil society movement from the perspective of public sphere, social capital and prachakhom using quantitative and qualitative data.
On 22 May 2014, the Royal Thai Armed Forces launched a coup d'etat against the caretaker government of Thailand. The military established a junta called National Council for Peace and Order to govern the nation. It is necessary to consider the influence in the formation process for civil society, especially village civil society, prachakhom.

Our research has found that using online teaching materials can be extremely effective for carrying out religious culture education. The materials that were produced over the course of our research have been made available through our website. They include commentaries on the basic texts used in religious culture education, a database of world heritage properties associated with religious culture, a database related to film and religious culture, and a database of museums in Japan that are particularly useful for religious culture education.
Discussions at forums with an international framework and at study meetings attended by scholars from many Japanese universities have also made it clear that religious culture education has become an important issue in the context of ongoing globalization. Various initiatives are being undertaken grounded in the religious cultures of the countries concerned.

This study delineates the outlook for the role of Japanese Buddhist temples, especially in depopulating regions, which was so far discussed as a critical agenda among Buddhist denominations for over thirty years. The researches we conducted aimed to find out not only countermeasures against depopulation and aging of temple members, but also unique cases in which membership and participation in temples’ ceremonies enhanced their integration into temples and regions in addition to the acquisition of general trust and social ethics. Another social works such as establishment of Buddhist hospice, conducting active listening by volunteers, and regional social welfares were also studied. In 2016 the book titled “Temples’ action in depopulating regions in the effort to generate social capitals,” will be published by Hozokan.

This is a result of the research on prachakhom (village civil society) as the basis for the emergence of civil society and development in Thailand's northeastern region.
In our past projects, we have discussed the possibilities of the formation of civil society movement in Thailand. We concluded that "Prachakhom" or village civil society was the foundation of the formation process, and, therefore, the approaches to foster Prachakhom were studied.
Prachakhom as a gathering of people has been an integral part of Civil Society Movement is a new idea, derived from the West. The principal focus of the civil society movement in Thailand, therefore, lies with the study of Prachakhom. Arguably, village civil society can be divided into two types : one is truly born out of the grassroots as expounded in the alternative development paradigm while the other arises in response to government policies. The research shows that the village civil societies which emerged during the implementation of Prime Minister Thaksin's projects, such as One Tambon One Product (OTOP) Project, the Village Fund, the establishment of Tambon Administrative Organization (TAO), were the second type of Prachakhom, which lacked the true participation of the people in the communities. Therefore, the research objective is to study the role of the media, network, educational institutions, factors and motives which engender the village civil society from the grassroots that will lead to the formation of civil society movement in the future. After Thaksin's banishment, our research has to adopted new direction of research.

This research project aimed to establish a quality-assuring system for higher education in the field of religious studies (the term "education about religious culture" has been coined to name religious studies-based education as distinguished from theology-based education). In particular, it planned, on the one hand, to develop an inter-college evaluation system ("shukyo-bunkashi" system) based upon provisional, subject benchmark standards. On the other hand, it attempted to build a clearinghouse for college teachers in religious studies programs, which provides them with practical teaching methods and materials.
The project was carried out by seven working groups, each of which was comprised of the leading members of religious studies programs from more than twenty universities, including both national and private. Its major achievements are : a fact-finding survey of education about religious culture in undergraduate curricula ; needs analyses focusing on students' and corporate expectations for a "shukyo-bunkashi", a qualified specialist in religious culture; the foundation of the inter-college evaluation system of "shukyo-bunkashi" ; the launching of an on-line clearinghouse for teaching materials.
In order to make the results publicly accessible, the project has issued quarterly newsletters as well as held several international symposia, lectures and workshops.

This study deals with religions as social capital. Nationally less than 30 per cent of the Japanese recognize themselves as religious. Under such circumstances, some religions have been involved in social contribution activities which include relief activities during emergencies and disasters, support activities in developing countries, peace movements, the promotion of education and culture, and human resource training. This research showed that religions in Japan can be a social resource to foster a spirit of mutual cooperation as social capital.

This is a result of the research, supported by Grand-in-Aid for Scientific Research, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan from 2005 to 2007, on the village civil society as the basis for the emergence of civil society and development in Thailand's northeastern region. It is also a related outcome of the research on Regional Development in Northeast Thailand and the Formation of Civil Society (Sakurai and Somsak (eds.), Khon Kaen University, 2003).
In our past projects, we have discussed the possibilities of the formation of civil society movement in Thailand. In our perspective, "Prachakhom" or village civil society is the foundation of the formation process, and, therefore, the approaches to foster Prachakhom are studied.
Prachakhom as a gathering of people has been an integral part of Thai society while Civil Society Movement is a new idea, derived from the West. The principal focus of the study of the civil society movement in Thailand, therefore, lies with the study of Prachakhom. Arguably, village civil society can be divided into two types: one is truly born out of the grassroots as expounded in the alternative development paradigm while the other arises in response to government policies. The research shows that the village civil societies which emerged during the implementation of Prime Minister Thaksin's projects, such as One Tambon One Product (OTOP) Project, the Village Fund, as well as the establishment of Tambon Administrative Organization (TAO), were the second type of Prachakhom, which lacked the true participation of the people in the communities. Therefore, the objective of the research is to study the role of the media, network, educational institutions, factors and motives which engender the village civil society from the grassroots that will lead to the formation of civil society movement in the future.

In this study, investigators examined the specific states of locally grounded development (endogenous development) in contemporary Thailand. We presumed that such development must have derived from innovation and mutual cooperation among local people and local public organizations. The study sites included Nakhoon Raachasimaa, Khoon Kaen, Noong Khaai and Kaalasin in eastern and northeastern Thailand, Chiang Mai and Lamphun in the north and Phuuket in the south. Specific themes of the study included partnerships between Japanese multinational corporations and local organizations for health a...

Researchers who study cult problems and social orders in the comparative perspective should conduct survey not only cult issues but background phenomena of culture and society. Admitting that our research results are partials of recent cult problems in modern world, our three years' research project reached our desired result as follows:1)Yoshihide Sakurai conducts comparative study of cult issues and anti-cult movements in Europe, North American region and Japan.2)Hiroshi Tsuchiya reconsiders spirituality and religion in the perspective of researcher's positionality.3)Manabu Watanabe describes believers' affiliation, conversion, and defection in cults, and evaluates psychological effects of exit counseling they experienced.4)Hutoshi Watanabe argues legitimacy of exit counseling for cult believers and compares their recovery with large numbers of shut-in person in Japan.5)Yasushi Koike deals with survivors' claim, infringement of their human rights, which reflects modern culture of self-determination and self-responsibility.6)Hiroko Nakanishi compares media reports concerning the Unification Church in Japan with those in Korea.7)Graduate students also conduct valuable researches in various fields.Although not a few researchers are interested in this issue and some young researchers are aware of significance in the sociology of religion, head investigator should indicate the difficulties of organizing research group that will face cult issues and respond civilian's expectation by critical and practical recognition of cults. However, study of cult issues should be continued.

This Research Project; is an articulated structure of gender/sexuality control and cultural structure through communications between religious studies and gender studies. Each member of the project maintained fieldwork on religious movements and the institutions, and tried to reconstruct religious experiences based on the interviews of the members of the religious institution. So that, finally, this project could describe basic issues of gender and religious studies. The characteristic points are listed below:
1) Empirical research : almost all of the studies on religion and gender have maintained an analysis and criticism of it's traditions. However, our purpose was to obtain a description through discourses and activities of religious institutions and it's members.
2) Communitality : for pointing out the relations between religious activities and social structure, we tried to describe various faces by combining issues that each project member had researched.
3) Gender balance : many cases of gender studies consist of only women and criticize women's situations. However, this project consisted of both women and men.
4) Cultural character and globalization : we tried to compare the situation of Japan with the rest of the world/area, not only each gender situation of religious movements.

The theme of the 7th 1999 International Thai Seminar was "Is Thailand a civil society?" Thai and foreign researchers analyzed actual Thai society and discussed the gap between the assumed 'ideal society' and the actual civil society, and the problems to be overcome. However, very few researchers discussed the roles of local people, farmers and laborers, who make up the majority of social strata, on the formation of civil societyThis research, based on accumulated previous research after social macro-dynamics were analyzed, tries to consider the opening of new phases in which identity of communities, farmers and laborers can be grasped with microanalysis. This indicates not only data acquisition by foreign researchers, but also remarkable social facts, such as locals' abilities to make their living and develop their culture, which are deeply rooted in Thai society, the fourth estate and regional communities. In order to examine the actual formation of autonomous organizations (such as citizens' groups and participating administrative organizations), self-help organizations (credit cooperatives, etc.) and the roles of the administrative organs that act as organizations builders, NGOs and local residents, making monographs on a community basis has been targeted. In FY 2000, among the research subject areas, each preliminary investigation was carried out, including visits to the organizations of the areas and research zones. In March 2001 Japanese member held a research meeting at Ryukyu University. In FY 2001, Japanese researchers conducted month-long investigations during both the summer and winter vacations, and obtained resulting data. Thai researchers also conducted their study in each field. In FY 2002 (final year), in addition to each one of researches, the international symposium of the conclusion of the last fiscal year was held in Hokkaido University in February 4-5. This book edits the papers presented at this symposium.

Formation of a new religion and its conflict with community :Case study of a new religious sect,Tenchi-Seikyo,affiliated with Unification Church,(25th International Conference of International Society for the Sociology of Religion 26-30 July 1999 Maria Theresia College Leuven Bergium Handbook of tha 25th Conference pp.115-116)の発表を行った。

At first, the occupational social and cultural adaptation of Nikkei Brazilians to Japan is analyzed through 508 cases in 8 Prefectures, through which it made clear that the discontinuity of their jobs between Brazil and Japan makes them hard to adjust to Japan. The value orientation of Nikkei Brazilians, especially their rugged individualism makes difficult them to adjust to the belt production of Japanese modern factories, which bring out pressures upon them. They say Brazil is more mobile than Japan and that Japan is closed and exclusive. On the other hand, their openness accelerates social and cultural interchanges between them and Japanese. It is studied also that with this visit to Japan as a momentum, their consciousness of being Japanese becomes more and more strong among the second or third generation of Nikkei Brazilians, who now intend to make long stay in Japan instead of mere emigrant laborers. This self-consciousness of being Japanese makes possible Nikkei Brazilians coexist with Japanese.
Secondly, 86 international marriages between foreign husbands and Japanese wives are case-studies through direct interviews. Through these case-studies the following three are made clear. 1), there is a sharp discrimination between Japanese couples and international ones and 2), couples of western husbands and Japanese wives equally share household tasks, while between Asian husbands and Japanese wives males make decision over household tasks and allot a number of household tasks upon their wives. 3), taking advantages of internationality positively , couples educate their children freely and bilingually irrespective of their nationality.

Our research team carried out a comparative study on rural development in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand (1996-1998) and also on Taiwan (1997-1998). In this fiscal year (1998-1999), we continued to conduct the same research, especially on "Janasaviya Program" (a poverty alleviation project) in Sri Lanka, "development monks" in Thailand, a development project of marshy peat bed in Indonesia, and a rural history under the development dictatorship in Indonesia.
Having these research experiences, we have come to realize some theoretical and methodological implications for the study of "development phenomena". For instance, we need to look at not only development discourse but its concomitant institutional settings as a whole. In other words, we have to focus on "local development event", in which actors, institutions, material things and discourses are related each other on the network of power, and also need to analyze how actors such as development workers, farmers and planners construct their subjects for development/anti-development (or even ones indifferent to development). Having understood these micro networks of power and the construction of subjects in local development events, we then will be able to see and describe a micro-process of development phenomena.
This is, however, still a preliminal stage of our research. For further study on development phenomena, We have to elaborate our theoretical concepts (such as subject, agency, political economy and so on) and analytical framework, and at the same time need to accumulate ethnographic experiences on development events.

This research intended to make clear the knowledge and cultural background among "professionals" who are engaged in Japanese Development Aid organizations. This focussed on both "universal" knowledge and private knowledge among those professionals. Understanding these configuration of knowledge together with their cultural background, this tried to make clear "development phenomena" in the Third world.
This research has discussed some theoretical significance of focus on knowledge in a wider context of development studies. Then, this carried out some case studies on Aid organizations in Indonesia. Furthermore, life-histories of Japanese professionals have been written down through long-term interviews. Though data processing has not been completed, this research showed that those professionals, whether the Government officials or NGOs workers, have to much extent common knowledge (about Aid business) which seems to have come from Western Aid circles.
However, this research also made clear the difficulties to understand cultural background of those professionals without log-term participant observation with them. This will be the next step for our research in future.

New Light on the Theory of Religious Sect : A Aum-Shinrikyo and Tenchi SeikyoThis paper will first outline the brief history of Aum-Shinrikyo and the charges of destructive action towards citizens, as well as the discursive arguments about what cause produced such a religious sect in contemporary Japan. Last year, special TV programs about Aum-Shinrikyo's affairs monopolized the Japanese media, and some journalists and scholars, critical of the new religion, introduced 'Mind-Control theory' from the USA.This analysis will secondly focus on the mind-control techniques that a destructive cult uses to establish control over believers. The founder and leaders of Aum-Shinrikyo are suspected of having persuaded innocent young people to commit awful crimes. However, mind-control cannot be conceptually distinguished from other social interaction processes such as socialization, personal communication and mass communication. Those processes surely shape individual thought and direct action toward particular points of view. Therefore, the mind-control theory is not logical in terms of sociology and social phychology. Rather, it has come to be used when labeling certain religious groups. Also, the pejorative use of the word 'cult' sometimes occurs in these cases. When we try to understand the conversion and religious activities of believers, we should not consider them deceived but realize their motivation and the circumstances surrounding their conversion -- even in the case of a cult.Third, Tenchiseikyo was formally small religious sect established by a Japanese female shamanist, Kawase Kayo, however recently this sect was merged by the Unification Church, so that the Rem. San Myong Muum, the founder of the Unification Church, are respected as the Miroku-bosatu (Maitreya : the Buddha who is believed to appear in future, 56 billion years after the dead of Buddha). The analysis firstly focuses on the process of reformation of the small religious sect into the large sect related to the Unification Church from 1988 to 1996. Secondly, the life history of Kawase Kayo shows the typical female founder of new religion in modern Japan. She was not deceived by the member of Unificaiton Church, but she converted her shamanistic and folk belief into Maitreya millennium.

It is all empted here to trace historically the migration to Hokkaido against the socio-emonomic backgrounds of migrations so well as to analize there settlement process in connection with their social mobility.
Y. Sakurai studies the biographically story of a women teacher and tells us that she overcomes her life crisis in settlement process by her christianfaith. T. Hirakawa analize land transfer of ownership between fathers and adapted sons in early Hem period under the prohibition of land transfer and find that this type of land tranfd. is nothing but the business of land transfer between seller and buyer by sale. In this sense, adoption is the pretended means to transfer of land ownership by sale.
S. Yonemura analizes historically the formation and development of two farmers-and-soldiers village, and find that migrants and comparatively wealthy and school careers are high. Besides, settlers of both high school career and military upper class get jobs in public offices and become public office managers, while settlers of lower militant class engage themselves in farming and shopping both within and without their first settled village.
