Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A, 1076, 170368\_1, 170368\_7, Jul. 2025, [Peer-reviewed]
English, Decommissioning nuclear reactor sites presents challenges due to the presence of various radionuclides, including alpha emitters (e.g., Pu, Am, Cm) and beta emitters (e.g., $^{137}$Cs, $^{90}$Sr-$^{90}$Y), which pose significant internal exposure risks to workers. Traditional measurement methods require multiple instruments and are time-consuming, particularly in high gamma-ray environments. To address these issues, we developed a remote alpha and beta discrimination measurement system that integrates a stilbene scintillator detector with a silicon photomultiplier, enabling simultaneous detection of both alpha and beta particles. This study further incorporates machine learning techniques, specifically Support Vector Machines (SVM), for automatic discrimination, eliminating the need for user-defined thresholds and ensuring consistent operational conditions. The system was tested with known radiation sources, demonstrating over 96\% classification accuracy for alpha and beta particles. Measurements conducted in motion effectively identified contamination sources, confirming the system's capability for real-time analysis. This innovative approach enhances radiation safety and efficiency in nuclear decommissioning operations, making it particularly beneficial in environments where human access is limited. - Development of contamination detection system combined with various remote devices

English, The detection of alpha and beta contamination locations is important for decontaminating nuclear facilities. In the high radiation dose rate environment at the decommissioning sites, the contamination measurement by the workers is not effective. Thus, we developed a remote automatic contamination measurement system using a new scintillator-based detector. A 50 mm$\phi$ $\times$ 100-$\mu$m-thick YAlO$_{3}$(Ce)(YAP:Ce) scintillator was coupled with a flat panel-type multianode photomultiplier tube. The detector was installed downwards at the bottom of a robot. It has an energy measurement capability, and the energy measurement could discriminate the alpha particles from the beta and $^{222}$Rn alpha particles. With the energy information, alpha and beta particles could be identified and mapped simultaneously. In addition, a slow-moving robot could be used to obtain statistically sufficient counts in a single run measurement, allowing the evaluation of surface contamination density using only alpha particles. The remote automatic contamination measurement system will be useful in visualizing the contamination distribution in environments that are inaccessible to workers. - LASSO reconstruction scheme to predict radioactive source distributions inside reactor building rooms; Practical applications

English, In order to find radioactive hot spots inside reactor building rooms from structural data together with air dose rate measurement data, Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) has been recently suggested as a promising scheme. The scheme has been examined in simplified room models and its high estimation feasibility has been confirmed by employing Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) as a radiation simulation code. In this paper, we apply the scheme to complex room models inside real reactor buildings. The target rooms are pool canal circulation system room and main circulation system room in Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) at Oarai area, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). In these real rooms, we create STL format structural data based on Computer Aided Design (CAD) models made directly from their point group data measured by laser scanning devices, and we notice that the total number of their surface meshes in these real rooms reaches to the order of 1 million. Then, this order of the mesh number clearly indicates that one needs a simplified radiation simulation code considering only direct transmission of gamma ray as a radiation calculation instead of PHITS demanding high computational costs. By developing such a simplified code and customizing it to perform LASSO scheme, we consequently confirm that LASSO scheme driven by the simplified simulation can also successfully predict unknown radioactive hot spots on real structural models. - Visual analysis of geospatial multivariate data for investigating radioactive deposition processes

English, In book, We developed a lightweight compact Compton camera to measure the distribution of radioactive contamination inside the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. We conducted performance evaluation tests in the coastal area of Fukushima, Japan, using the camera, which employs a cerium (Ce)-doped GAGG (Gd$_{3}$Al$_{2}$Ga$_{3}$O$_{12}$) scintillator coupled with a multipixel photon counter. The camera can clearly visualize spreading of radioactivity along the ground surface. In addition, we performed three-dimensional image reconstruction of the distribution of radioactive contamination using the multi-angle data obtained with the Compton camera. We succeeded in obtaining a three-dimensional image of radioactive contamination in the outdoor area. - Remote radiation imaging system using a compact gamma-ray imager mounted on a multicopter drone

English, Scientific journal, A remote radiation imaging system comprising a lightweight Compton camera and a multicopter drone was developed to remotely and quickly measure radioactive contamination inside the buildings of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS). The drone system is used for measuring detailed radiation distributions in narrow areas, which have been difficult to gauge with conventional aircraft monitoring using helicopters. A measurement of radiation distributions in outdoor environments in the coastal areas of Fukushima, Japan, was performed. The drone system with the Compton camera succeeded in remote observations of dense hotspots from the sky over a contaminated area near the FDNPS. The time required for image reconstruction is approximately 550 s in the case of a 9-m flight altitude for the hotspots with a surface dose rate of several tens of $\mu$Sv/h. This drone system will be used inside the buildings of the FDNPS for remote measurement of radioactive contamination. - Development of compact Compton camera for 3D image reconstruction of radioactive contamination

English, Scientific journal, The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc., went into meltdown after the large tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. Very large amounts of radionuclides were released from the damaged plant. Radiation distribution measurements inside the building of FDNPS are indispensable to execute the decommission tasks in the reactor buildings. We have developed a light-weight compact Compton camera to three-dimensionally measure the distribution of radioactive contamination inside FDNPS. The total weight of the Compton camera is lower than 1.0 kg. The $\gamma$-ray sensor of the Compton camera employs the Ce-doped GAGG scintillators coupled with a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC: Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.,). We performed the 3D image reconstruction of the $^{137}$Cs-radioactive sources as shown in Fig. 1; the 3D radiation image is reconstructed using the multi-angle data measured with the Compton camera. Here, we introduce the development status of the 3D radiation imaging system consisting of the Compton camera. Moreover, we present the results of a performance evaluation test for 3D image reconstruction of radioactive contaminations in details. - Radiation Imaging System using a Compact Gamma-ray Imager mounted on a Remotely Operated Machine

English, International conference proceedings, In this paper, we propose a novel remote visualization system based on particle-based volume rendering (PBVR), which enables interactive analyses of extreme scale volume data located on remote computing systems. The remote PBVR system consists of Server, which generates particles for rendering, and Client, which processes volume rendering, and the particle data size becomes significantly smaller than the original volume data. Depending on network bandwidth, the level of detail of images is flexibly controlled to attain high frame rates. Server is highly parallelized on various parallel platforms with hybrid programing model. The mapping process is accelerated by two orders of magnitudes compared with a single CPU. The structured and unstructured volume data with 100 millions of cells is processed within a few seconds. Compared with commodity Client/Server visualization tools, the total processing cost is dramatically reduced by using proposed system. - Multivariate volume rendering using transfer function synthesizer implemented in remote visualization system PBVR

This technique generates a multidimensional transfer function by logical synthesis of variables and transfer functions. This technique enables analysts to extract correlation of variables and to combine multivariate surface and volume shapes. Japanese, In this paper, we propose a novel remote visualization system based on particle-based volume rendering (PBVR). The system consists of a Server, which generates particles (rendering primitives), and a Client, which process volume rendering, and particles are transferred from Server to Client. The size of particle data is determined by the resolution of rendering images, and is significantly smaller than the original volume data. The smallness of the particle data is useful also for achieving a high frame rate. In the system, Server is highly parallelized on multiple GPGPUs using a hybrid MPI-CUDA programing model. The particle generation is accelerated by two orders of magnitudes compared with CPU, and structured and unstructured volume data with a hundred million cells are processed within a second. The total performance of remote visualization is compared against a commodity visualization tool, and an order of magnitude faster processing speed is achieved. - 2-dimentional visualization technique for exploring region of interest in 4-dimensional data

Japanese, In numerical simulations, variations of calculation results with respect to a variable axis are often observed. When the target model is given in 3D, the simulation results become 4D. Such a multi-dimensional dataset given in more than 4D space is analyzed by detailed explorations of regions of interest (ROIs) in multi-dimensional space. However, for high-dimensional and large-scale datasets, this approach requires enormous processing time and effort, and may have difficulty in capturing all the ROIs. Therefore, we propose a technique that is based on a concept of spatiotemporal image. In our technique, a space axis is created by octree, a variable axis is defined in the direction perpendicular to the space axis. Our technique is applied to the results of 3D seismic simulations of a nuclear plant, and regions with characteristic frequency responses of each region are analyzed. Through the analyses, it is demonstrated that our technique can effectively capture ROIs from 4D datasets. - Visualization technique for large-scale data using particle based volume rendering

English, To estimate real behavior accurately by numerical simulations, it is indispensable to evaluate validity of simulation results because numerical simulations include various uncertainties such as "uncertainty due to randomness" and "uncertainty due to lack of knowledge". As one of approaches to evaluate validity of simulation results, we introduce "the degree of certainty" of simulations to real behavior. Here, to get a more accurate degree of certainty, we try to confirm the degree of influence about unevenness of uncertainty and to reduce uncertainty due to lack of knowledge. For this, we research and develop a validity evaluation system composed of three tools. We have applied them to our seismic simulation system which enables to execute the assembly structure analysis of an entire nuclear plant and confirmed that their functions are applicable to the simulation. - An approach to select and extract an interested partial model based on spatio-temporal feature analysis

English, The use of high frame rate neutron radiography has been proposed as a method for recording images of oil in a running car engine. However, it is difficult to capture the behavior of oil from such images, because the images are dark and blurry. Therefore, we attempt to overcome this problem using a multi-scale image processing technique, in which the oil regions are classified based on scale. This method can be used to focus attention on objects with a particular scale. In addition, we propose a technique by which to capture the time-dependent behavior of oil using spatio-temporal image analysis. Using these techniques, the region of interest can be determined and observed carefully. - Spatio-temporal mapping; A Technique for overview visualization of time-series datasets

English, Numerical simulations have recently increased in scale and have often output high dimensional datasets. This makes it difficult for users to quickly grasp physical phenomena involved in such datasets. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a spatio-temporal mapping technique (spatio-temporal map) by using an information visualization technique. The spatio-temporal map is generated by mapping the values of a 3D and time-evolving physical quantity into a 2D space with spatial and temporal axes. Here, 3D spatial information is condensed into one dimension by subdividing a target model with an octree. By using the map, users can quickly find regions of interest (ROI). In addition, users can interactively change several aspects of the map such as its resolution and color coding method. By applying the spatio-temporal map to a full-scale 3D vibration simulator for an entire nuclear power plant, we confirmed that the map is a useful technique to quickly identify appropriate ROI. - Visualization of blurred images of liquid by multi-scale analysis

English, In this paper, we report that our image analysis technique, which has be proposed for analyzing large-scale and complex simulation and measurement experiment results in nuclear field was applied to the industrial problems. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. proposed a high-speed camera using neutron radiography, and developed the technology to capture the flow of oil in a car engine. However the recorded images are blurred, it is difficult to visualize and analyze the behavior of oil in detail. Therefore, we try to overcome this by using multi-scale analysis, which is an image processing technique on image emphasis. In addition, we present a spatio-temporal image analysis for capturing the behavior of oil that is not yet understood in detail. In this presentation, we discuss the effectiveness of our image analysis technique. - Visualization system for large-scale network data; A Large scale data capture technique

Japanese, Recently, construction of large-scale distributed file systems has become easier because of reduced hardware costs and the availability of large hard disks and faster networks. However, if the sizes and/or numbers become too large, occasionally even the data server manager cannot control the storage situation of the files. Therefore, we propose the concept of adaptive network graph display, in which the graph style can be changed according to the details of what the user details is observing, and construct a visualization system based on this concept. When observing data globally, the proposed system selectively displays information based on the clustering result, and when observing data locally, the system displays detailed information. This technique is a basic technology for computational science to achieve large-scale datasets handling and knowledge succession which is a problem in atomic energy related fields. - Adaptive view-dependent tree graph visualization

English, This paper proposes an adaptive visualization technique for representing a large-scale hierarchical dataset within a limited display space. A hierarchical dataset has nodes and links that reveal the parent-child relationship between the nodes. These nodes and links are described using graphics primitives. When the number of these primitives is large, it is difficult to recognize the structure of the hierarchical data because several primitives overlap within a display space. In order To overcome this difficulty, we propose an adaptive visualization technique for hierarchical datasets. The proposed technique selects an appropriate graph style according to the nodal density in each area. - Overview visualization of time-series dataset

Japanese, With the improvement in the performance of supercomputers, numerical simulations have become complex and the simulation results have become large-scale. It has made the interpretation of simulation results difficult. Therefore, we propose a spatio-temporal visualization system "spatio-temporal map" for interpreting the time-series simulation results. The spatio-temporal map is an information visualization technique useful for specifying the feature area from simulation and measurement results. In the map, the change of a physical quantity is allocated in two-dimensional space with spatial and temporal information in each dimension. In this paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying it to the large scale simulation results. - Data exploration system for the evaluation of numerical simulation results

Japanese, In this paper, we propose data exploration system for the evaluation of numerical simulation results. With the improvement in the performance of supercomputers, numerical simulations have become larger and more complex, which has made the interpretation of simulation results more difficult. Moreover, occasionally, users cannot evaluate numerical simulation results, even though they have spent a great deal of time, because interactive visualization is impossible for such large-scale data. Therefore, we herein propose a data exploration system with which users evaluate large-scale time-series data that has been obtained in a parallel and distributed environment. The proposed system allows users to simultaneously visualize and analyze data in both the global and local scales. - Design of scientific concept vocabulary for cognitive methodology based on data analysis system

Japanese, Scientific Concept Vocabulary (SCV) has been proposed to actualize Cognitive methodology based Data Analysis System: CDAS which supports researchers to analyze large scale data efficiently and comprehensively. In the information model of SCV, all semantic information is related to substantial data and algorisms. Consequently, SCV enables a data analysis system to process semantic information for physics and engineering. Using SCV, it is hoped that CDAS is able to extract semantic information from numerical simulation data. In this paper, the prototype of SCV has been constructed and applied to actual data of numerical simulation in order to confirm the implementability of the system. - Visualization of runtime behavior of branch-and-bound algorithms

Japanese, In branch-and-bound algorithms for integer programming, runtime behavior of the algorithms depends much on branching strategy. However, from a huge computation log of a large program, it is difficult to explore a key factor for effective branching. To analyze which factor of branching strategy is essential, we develop a system for visualization of growing process of a large branch-and-bound tree. The proposed system provides intuitive understanding how branching strategy affects branch-and-bound process.

The contamination of radioactive materials leaked from the reactor has resulted in numerous hot spots in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) building, posing obstacles to its decommissioning. In order to solve this problem, JAEA has conducted research and development of the digital technique for inverse estimation of radiation source distribution and countermeasures against the estimated source in virtual space for two years from 2021 based on the subsidy program "Project of Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management" performed by the funds from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. In this article, we introduce the results of the project and the plan of the renewal project started in April 2023. For the former project, we report the derivative method for LASSO method considering the complex structure inside the building and the character of the source and show the result of the inverse estimation using the method in the real reactor building. Moreover, we explain the platform software "3D-ADRES-Indoor" which integrates these achievements. Since nuclear power plants have dimensions approximately 100m$^{3}$ and their structures are an assembly made up of over 10 million components, it is not convenient to experimentally analyze its behavior under strong loads of earthquakes, due to the complexity and hugeness of plants. The proposed system performs numerical simulations to evaluate the behaviors of an assembly like a nuclear facility. The paper discusses how to carry out visual analysis for assembly such as nuclear power plants. In a result discussion, a numerical experiment was carried out with a numerical model of High Temperature engineering Test Reactor of Japan Atomic Energy Agency and its result was compared with observed data. A good corresponding among them was obtained as a structural analysis of an assembly by using visualization. As a conclusion, a visual analytics methodology for assembly is discussed., Japanese - Level of Detail Control for Environmental Monitoring Datasets

Broad survey on the distribution of the air dose rate has been performed after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant continuously. The surveyed monitoring datasets are stored in a database and are made available to the public. Recently, the size of the datasets have been significantly increased as more detailed measurements in space and time are available, and effective reduction of the size of the datasets is necessary for visualizing and exploring such large scale datasets. However, if the datasets are not carefully reduced, we often miss a part of important features of the distribution data. Therefore, we develop an effective Level of Detail control (LoD) method for retaining critical features of the distribution. In the method, the global and local features of the distribution are extracted by means of differential topology analyses. Then, the simplified data is created by edge collapse operation with taking into account these features of the data., The Visualization Society of Japan, English - An Illustration by the next generation numerical simulator for quake-proofing on the K

This report presents a method for visualizing scale-free networks including Overlay networks as an typical example. Visualizing large-scale and complicated networks such as social networks has recently been very popular while conventional network visualization techniques cannot allow us to understand the topological structure of the scale-free networks. This is because the vertex degrees vary at an exponential rate in the scale-free network and thus special attention should be given when visualizing the network connectivity and analyzing the network traffic there. In this report, we employ the hierarchical representation of the scale-free network by referring to their vertex degrees and autonomous system relationships, so that we can clearly visualize the topological structure of the network in 3D space and retrieve the traffic paths over the network., Japanese - Research and development of full-scale three-dimensional vibration simulator for nuclear plant

Nuclear plants are complicated and huge structures and consist of a large number of parts. To simulate the behavior of such a complicated huge structure, it becomes important the viewpoint as a general system including pre-post-processing. Therefore, the CCSE proposed an approach for assembly structure analysis and implemented a framework of a full-scale 3D vibration simulator for an entire nuclear plant. Until now, we performed numerical experiments using the data of a building and equipment of HTTR, Oarai R\&D Center, JAEA, and demonstrated that earthquake response simulation of large-scale structure as an entire nuclear plant was possible so far. In this report, the framework of the full-scale 3D vibration simulator, the assembly structure analysis approach and visualization technology for an evaluation of the results are shown. And finally, an example of application of the simulator for probabilistic risk assessment, PRA, started from 2011, is shown., Japanese - Visualization for tensor volume data

Our goal is to evaluate the validity of results obtained from seismic simulation of entire nuclear power plant, and then to estimate real phenomena. In this study, we have established a trial system to evaluate the validity by automatically abstracting a characteristic spatial profile of physical values in consideration of uncertainty caused by discretization, as one of methods to reveal factors of various uncertainties included in the simulation. By applying the system to a seismic simulation, we have confirmed that various characteristic spatial profiles of stress with error estimation are automatically classified and abstracted from the simulation result., 日本計算工学会, Japanese - Spatio-temporal mapping; A Technique for overview visualization of time-series datasets

In the map, the change of a physical quantity is allocated in two-dimensional space with spatial and temporal information in each dimension. By the way, it is helpful for users to change the map interactively, such as changing the resolution of the map, colored physical quantity, and so on. Therefore, the function enabling users to design the map by changing the tree structure is also developed., English - Adaptive visualization for analyzing large-scale network datasets

In this paper, we propose a visualization technique for handling large-scale experiment datasets in distributed file system. Traditional network visualization techniques have problem that not all data can be displayed at the same time because the file-sharing network data is too large-scale. Therefore, we propose a concept of adaptive network graph display, in which the graph style can be changed according to the details of user's observation. We construct a visualization system based on this concept. When observing data globally, the proposed system selectively displays information based on the clustering result, and when observing data locally, the system displays detailed information. This technique is a basic technology for computational science to achieve large-scale datasets handling which is a problem in atomic energy related fields., Japanese - Adaptive visualization for large-scale graph

A hierarchical dataset has nodes and links showing the parent-child relationship between the nodes. These nodes and links are described using graphics primitives. When the number of these primitives is large, it is difficult to recognize the structure of the hierarchical data because many primitives are overlapped within a limited region. To overcome this difficulty, we propose an adaptive visualization technique for hierarchical datasets. In this R\&D we have inherited the knowledge and skills in ITBL Infrastructure developed in the national project ITBL (Information Technology Based Laboratory), which aims at establishment of virtual research environment where supercomputers and data bases are connected by network. Here we have focused on two issues: improvements of safety and usability. For the safety, we have made the authentication mechanism double with both the personal certification and the machine certification. For the usability, we have developed the grid-enabled client API to use grid functions on a user terminal. Mar. 2026, 熊本, Japan, Minimizing radiation exposure and improving the high-radiation environment within the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) reactor buildings are essential for safe and efficient decommissioning. To address this, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has developed 3D-ADRES-Indoor, a digital system for three-dimensional radiation mapping and source estimation, under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's subsidy program for decommissioning and contaminated water countermeasures (FY2023-2025). The system integrates three components: FrontEnd, enabling high-speed on-site source term estimation; Pro, allowing detailed off-site analysis of radiation distributions and countermeasure evaluation; and BackEnd, a centralized database for managing measurement and analysis data. This presentation focuses on the machine-learning-based inverse estimation of radiation sources, demonstrating its technical approach and on-site verification conducted at 1F Unit 2. The results show that 3D-ADRES-Indoor can effectively support decommissioning operations by providing intuitive three-dimensional visualization of radiation fields and aiding in exposure management and planning., [Domestic Conference] - Application of radiation-source exploration system (3D-ADRES-Indoor) in 1F; Construction of radiation-source and dose-rate map and simulation for countermeasures

Aug. 2023, Iwaki, Japan, In order to facilitate the full-scale implementation of fuel debris removal at the Tokyo Electric Power Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (hereinafter referred to as 1F), it is necessary to establish a safe access route within the highly radiation-intensive reactor building (hereinafter referred to as "R/B"). For the purpose of the establishment, it requires environmental improvements such as decontamination of highly-intensive radiation sources and shielding measures. Based on the radiation dose measurement data at the site, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has examined inverse estimation scheme of highly-intensive radiation sources and developed a system that incorporates not only virtual reality (VR) but also mixed reality (MR, AR) to evaluate the effectiveness of decontamination and shielding measures. This report presents an overview of the research and development achievements to date and introduces necessary efforts for enhancing functionality to ensure practical applications at 1F., [International presentation] - R\&D project to estimate radioactive source distributions inside reactor building rooms; Overview and key results

May 2023, Vienna, Austria, In order to promote decommissioning in 1F, it is crucial to find out strong radioactive hot spots inside reactor building rooms based on environmental measurement data composed of structural surface model data and distribution data of air dose rates. Such hot spot prediction allows to reduce radiation risks of persons working inside 1F and consequently to safely construct access routes to remove fuel debris. We introduce a new scheme to inversely estimate radioactive source distributions using LASSO. The scheme is composed of multiple steps, e.g., one of the most essential steps is to select measurement points of air dose rates. In addition, we develop the other engines calculating 3D distributions of air dose rates from the estimated source distributions together with a tool simulating virtual countermeasures and visualizing various outputs of the above engines in 3D space. In the present paper, we overview R\&D project to integrate the above three engines., [International presentation] - Evaluation of exposure dose using recordings of avatar movement in XR

To obtain accurate distributions of radiation sources, which were released by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, detailed measurements of $\gamma$ rays are necessary. In this report, as a preliminary experiment, we address three-dimensional reconstruction from measurement data under ideal conditions, using two algorithms: a three-dimensional back-projection method and a list-mode maximum likelihood estimation method. Feb. 2017, 東京, Japan, We introduce a project that constructs the $\gamma$ ray remote visualization system for capturing the distribution of radiation sources, which were released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This project executes measurements using a Compton camera mounted on a drone. The measurement datasets are reconstructed for visualizing the radiation source distribution. In this report, we investigated the accuracy of reconstruction for measurement datasets with the constraints, using a three-dimensional back-projection method and a list-mode maximum likelihood estimation method. The measurement datasets are generated by Compton camera measurement simulations for point $\gamma$ ray sources, where the number and angle of Compton projection are limited. The reconstruction numerical experiments show that the source distribution data can be reconstructed if the number of projections is sufficiently high., [Domestic Conference] - Optimizing P2P network hierarchies for visual analytics

Nov. 2014, 岩手, Japan, In this paper, we propose an information visualization tool for the analysis of multivariate time series simulation datasets. For the implementation of this tool, we use a spatio-temporal map. The spatio-temporal map provides a method for mapping the distribution of physical data in a two-dimensional visualization space for space and time axis. It is possible to use parallel coordinate visualization technique of multivariate dataset for analysis of time series and multivariate datasets. In this tool, the physical data to be observed are first selected from the parallel coordinates, then, the spatial-temporal distribution of the selected physical data is observed using a spatio-temporal map. Sep. 2014, 京都, Japan, We survey the distribution of accumulated radioactive substances and assess the air dose rate. The surveyed datasets are stored in a database and are made available to the public. In addition, we develop a visualization tool that enables ones to download the datasets and then visualize them on one's computer environment. Recently, the size of the datasets have been significantly extended as more detailed measurements in space and time are available, and effective reduction of the size of the datasets is necessary for analyzing such large scale datasets. However, if the datasets are not carefully reduced, we often miss a part of important features in the distribution data. Therefore, we develop an effective Level of Detail control (LoD) method for retaining critical features of the distribution. In the method, the structure of two dimensional data that represents a global feature of the distribution is extracted by means of differential topology analyses. The data size is reduced by considering local features of the data, while retaining its global structure., [Domestic Conference] - Remote visualization of large-scale simulation results on K-computer using particle-based volume rendering

In recent years, large scale and complex simulation results are produced with increasing computational power. Feb. 2013, Kobe, Japan, We have developed a remote visualization system using Particle-based Volume Rendering on GPU cluster which can generates particles on the same number of parallel processes of the numerical simulation and visualize the result interactively after transferring the particle dataset to the client machine. This system manages GPU write to memory of particle dataset by generating particle index array in CPU. The particle dataset is copied from GPU memory to CPU memory after the particle generation. However the particle generation time didn't decrease against the increase of the number of calculation nodes because the generation time of a particle index array and particle copy became bottleneck. Jan. 2013, 東京, Japan, Conventional offline-processing visualization approaches are facing difficulties such as transferring large-scale data and reassembly of extensive amount of computational result files. On the other hand, an interactive manipulation such as a sweep of iso-level, a slice position or a movement of camera is essential for the visualization process. However the development of the current visualization techniques is not enough to generate the resulting images interactively. Moreover, batchjob visualization may occur overlooking of important features. We propose a client-server visualization system using Particle-based Volume Rendering. Dec. 2012, 日吉, Japan, This report explains our visualization technique by taking the case of application to a vibration simulation of nuclear facility under earthquake, which was conducted by the Center for Computational Science \& e-Systems (CCSE) at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). This simulation is carried out to reveal where in a nuclear facility a comparatively larger stress is caused. It is necessary, but difficult, to search "when", "where", and "what" happens in the nuclear facility from the simulation results. Therefore, we propose a novel spatio-temporal information mapping technique (spatio-temporal map) in which time and space corresponding to "when" and "where", respectively, are projected onto the frame of plane (visualization plane) and each phenomenon corresponding to "what" is graphically represented on the plane., [Domestic Conference] - Remote visualization for large-scale simulation using particle-based volume rendering

Proposed system allows users can observe the resulting data with changing the camera position freely., [International presentation] - An Approach to select and extract an interested partial model based on spatio-temporal feature analysis

Sep. 2012, 東広島, Japan, Numerical simulations have become common scientific approach in many fields including nuclear power. As the performance of supercomputers had increased, such simulations have increased in scale and complexity. In order to extract a distinctive partial model from such large-scale and complexity datasets, we propose an approach to select and extract an interested partial model. Our approach firstly subdivides the full-scale model, and secondly shows the features of the subdivided models. Finally, it selects the characteristic region and reconstructs the distinctive partial model. In this article, by applying our technique to a full-scale three dimensional vibration simulator for an entire nuclear power plant, we confirmed that the technique is an effective technique to evaluate such large-scale results., [Domestic Conference] - A Multilevel graph layout for analysing of large-scale network datasets

Mar. 2012, 宮崎, Japan, We propose a multilevel graph layout technique for visualizing large scale network datasets. Large-scale datasets are said to be difficult to analyze and visualize. However, with our technique, the datasets can be displayed in multistep. For instance the outline of network dataset is shown first, and when focused on a certain region, the detailed information is shown as well. By using this technique, users can observe a large scale dataset from the outline to the detail seamlessly, and therefore this is valuable for the structural analysis of network datasets., [Domestic Conference] - Bias function for color map adjustment for unstructured dataset

Jan. 2012, 名古屋, Japan, A part of the attempt to verify the effectiveness of the color map adjustment technique which referring the physical value of the simulation result, we report to the experimental result applied to the result of the response analysis of 3D virtual plant vibration simulator. When the physical value distributes disproportionately, the traditional color mapping allocates many colors to the local region and plain color is allocated to the other region. The subtle variation is possibly missed in this case. We proposed the color map adjustment technique. In order to verify the effectiveness of our technique, we applied to the result of the response analysis. In this result, the stress concentration exists in the bound part of the auxiliary cooling system and pipe. Therefore the traditional color map was not able to visualize the subtle variation in the other parts. We confirmed the variation of the physical value in detail using a color map generated by our technique., [Domestic Conference] - R\&D of large-scale data analysis system for atomic energy field

Nov. 2010, New Orleans, United States, Numerical simulation and measurement experiment have recently increased in scale and have often output high dimensional datasets. This makes it difficult for users to quickly grasp physical phenomena involved in such datasets. Therefore we have developed a visualization system for large-scale time-series datasets. In our system, global image is generated. This map can be used for overview visualization, displaying the spatial and temporal characteristics of the entire dataset. A spatio-temporal ROI can then be identified and a request sent data of this region to the server. This is then interactively visualized and observed on the client computer. This technique is a basic technology for computational science to achieve exploration large-scale time-series dataset which is a problem in atomic energy related fields., [International presentation] - Visualization system for the evaluation of numerical simulation results

Nov. 2009, Portland, United States, We propose a visualization system with which to evaluate large-scale time-series data. Recently, because of the improvement of supercomputers, numerical simulations have been larger and more complex. Increase in the size and complexity of simulations makes it difficult to evaluate physical phenomena from simulation results. Therefore, we herein propose a visualization system which has a multi-window display system that can display several forms of detailed information. The system allows the users to visualize and analyze data in both the global and local scales for evaluating the target datasets., [International presentation] - Visualization system for the evaluation of numerical simulation results

May 2009, 東京, Japan, Our challenge is to estimate the validity of simulation results by establishing "Cerebral Methodology Based Computing (CMC)". The estimation of the validity is indispensable to accurately predict phenomena by using simulation. It is difficult to estimate the validity from a single simulation because the simulation contains uncertainties and ambiguities. We have proposed CMC as the computing methodology which enables us to estimate the validity of results with both deductive and inductive approaches, similar to the human thinking process. To realize CMC, we have constructed the system which enables us to execute both deductive simulations and inductive simulations, and then combine results of those simulations in an integration process. We have applied the system to a thermal displacement analysis of a nuclear power plant and confirmed the usefulness of the system., [Domestic Conference] - Spatio-temporal map for time-series data visualization

May 2009, 東京, Japan, We propose a spatio-temporal map that enables the visualization of spatio-temporal data from three-dimensional models having temporal-varying physical data. Recent increases in the size and complexity of simulated time-series datasets makes the interactive visualization of datasets difficult. Therefore for such large-scale complex datasets, specifications of interested area are difficult. Our goal is to facilitate the examination of such large-scale complex spatio-temporal datasets., [Domestic Conference] - Medical image visualization using spherical projection

Mar. 2009, 武蔵野, Japan, We propose a volume data map to investigate inner structures and complex behaviors of datasets. Traditional visualization techniques provide an intuitive and effective way to explore volume datasets. However, these techniques suffer from the problem that visualization results depend on the viewing angle. Consequently, important information may be lost because they are unable to display hidden regions. To visualize information from all directions, we propose a volume data map projected in all directions. We consider this proposed map to be a navigation map for investigating three-dimensional datasets., [Domestic Conference]

The purpose of this research is to generate highly aesthetic curves and surfaces, such as car body shapes, by using computers with interactive and intuitive operations. We had already proposed 'log-aesthetic curves', a class of highly aesthetic curves involved in real shapes. For those curves, we realized approximation techniques with existing curve forms and interactive control methods. Then, we extended them to space curves, clarified its theoretical features, and proposed interactive control methods. Also, we proposed generation and control techniques for an aesthetic surface patch based on given two log-aesthetic curves.

We had the following two research goals at the beginning of this project: 1) Evaluating the effectiveness of a large-scale parallelization for combinatorial optimization problems on a volunteer computing environment, 2) Evaluating a JDK5.0-based general solver framework for combinatorial optimization problems. Together with these goals, we had a plan to develop a visualization tool for activity of solvers.
When we proposed this research, JXTA technology had attracted considerable attention. However, this technology seemed be not so powerful for our research goal. After we investigated computational environments for our research, we met a software tool Overlay Waver and made a prototype system on an overlay network using Overlay Weaver. Since Overlay Waver has an emulator of distributed environments, we could conduct large-scale computational simulations.
On one hand, we did not develop a JDK5.0-based general solver framework. We should reconsider whether a Java-based system is appropriate or not for our goals. On the other hand, we developed an excellent visualization tool which displays runtime behavior of a solving algorithm for hard problem instances.
Nowadays, the term "Volunteer computing" becomes a technical term in information technology. We should restart a similar project like this project in the near future, when volunteer computing environment becomes more mature one.
