Scientific journal, Traditional monolingual word embedding models transform words into high-dimensional vectors which represent semantics relations between words as relationships between vectors in the high-dimensional space. They serve as productive tools to interpret multifarious aspects of the social world in social science research. Building on the previous research which interprets multifaceted meanings of words by projecting them onto word-level dimensions defined by differences between antonyms, we extend the architecture of establishing word-level cultural dimensions to the sentence level and adopt a Language-agnostic BERT model (LaBSE) to detect position similarities in a multi-language environment. We assess the efficacy of our sentence-level methodology using Twitter data from US politicians, comparing it to the traditional word-level embedding model. We also adopt Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to investigate detailed topics in these tweets and interpret politicians' positions from different angles. In addition, we adopt Twitter data from Spanish politicians and visualize their positions in a multi-language space to analyze position similarities across countries. The results show that our sentence-level methodology outperform traditional word-level model. We also demonstrate that our methodology is effective dealing with fine-sorted themes from the result that political positions towards different topics vary even within the same politicians. Through verification using American and Spanish political datasets, we find that the positioning of American and Spanish politicians on our defined liberal-conservative axis aligns with social common sense, political news, and previous research. Our architecture improves the standard word-level methodology and can be considered as a useful architecture for sentence-level applications in the future. - The flow of corporate control in the global ownership network

English, Scientific journal, We propose a model and algorithm to measure the amount of influence a shareholder has over the flow of corporate control held by the ultimate owners. Existing models of corporate ownership and control either focus on the ultimate owners’ influence or inadequately evaluate the influence possessed by intermediate shareholders in a ownership network. As it extends Network Power Index (NPI) that describes the the power of corporate control possessed by the ultimate owners, our new model, Network Power Flow (NPF), delineates the distribution of ownership influence among shareholders across the network and identifies the channels through which the ultimate owners’ corporate control travel through the global shareholding network. Our analysis of NPI and NPF values for 7 million ultimate owners and 16 million shareholders reveals a new landscape of ownership and control in the global shareholding network that remained opaque before. - Women, Peace and Security: Literature Review of Women and Intrastate Conflict

English, Scientific journal, We analyze the connectivity of equity investments to the firms in the global ownership network that are reported as non-compliant with Environment, Social, and Government (ESG) benchmarks. We find that a large number of shareholders have ownership linkages to non-ESG firms, most commonly with three or four degrees of separation. Analyzing the betweenness centrality for shareholders connecting the ultimate owners and non-ESG firms, we find that the investment management companies play important roles in channeling the investment money into non-ESG firms, where largest American asset managers commonly have one to two degrees of separation on their ownership linkages to those problematic firms. Since asset managers collect capital from investors by running the equity funds, we analyze the ownership stakes and the associated voting rights attributable to the equity funds investors. We estimate the distribution of the power of corporate control over non-ESG firms among specific asset managers (such as BlackRock and Fidelity) and among different types of the equity funds (such as mutual funds and exchanged-traded funds), and explores how investing in the equity funds rather than ownership investing may have shifted the distribution of the power to control those non-ESG firms. - The power of corporate control in the global ownership network

English, Scientific journal,Abstract Timely estimation of the distribution of socioeconomic attributes and their movement is crucial for academic as well as administrative and marketing purposes. In this study, assuming personal attributes affect human behavior and movement, we predict these attributes from location information. First, we predict the socioeconomic characteristics of individuals by supervised learning methods, i.e., logistic Lasso regression, Gaussian Naive Bayes, random forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, and support vector machine, using survey data we collected of personal attributes and frequency of visits to specific facilities, to test our conjecture. We find that gender, a crucial attribute, is as highly predictable from locations as from other sources such as social networking services, as done by existing studies. Second, we apply the model trained with the survey data to actual GPS log data to check the performance of our approach in a real-world setting. Though our approach does not perform as well as for the survey data, the results suggest that we can infer gender from a GPS log. - Network Shapley-Shubik Power Index: Measuring Indirect Influence in Shareholding Networks

Global supply chains and global ownership networks are complex structures. Raw materials are transformed into finished products through many companies in various countries and industries. Therefore, on these pathways it is not easy to manually find companies that are complicit in human rights violations, environmental destruction, or have geopolitical risks. In this study, we estimate the battery procurement pathway of Tesla, Inc. as a case study and identify the national economic security risks latent in the estimated procurement pathway as (1) traditional geopolitical risk, (2) networked geopolitical risk, and (3) hidden dominance geopolitical risks, which are classified into three categories. Each risk can be automatically identified from network analysis (Betweenness centrality, Network power index, and Network power flow) on publicly available inter-firm transaction and shareholder information., The Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Japanese - The Connection between Investors and Anti-ESG Firms in Global Ownership Network: Dilemma in Socially Responsible Investing

We connect the corporate ownership network to the network of financial instruments that inject money into the ownership network. Almost all the asset managers have at least one path through which their equity stakes eventually reach a munitions company with the second or further apart links in the global ownership network. This result suggests that two obstacles encourage decoupling of equity stakes and social responsibilities so that socially responsible investors become incapable of making positive impacts with their investing strategy. The first obstacle is the fact that ETFs and other similar financial instruments separate capital and corporate control. The second obstacle is the complexity of ownership network itself. While the investors may have the potential to control munition companies, the complexity of the ownership network is likely to prevent the investors from knowing its own potential., The Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Japanese - グローバルな株式ネットワークにおける中国による間接的な企業支配の可視化

, Japanese - Diffusion Effects of Hong Kong Situation in Ownership Networks

Corporates may be under the control of foreign governments or shareholders through global ownership chains. For instance, the government of China arguably exerts indirect influence over foreign power companies and port authorities via Chinese state-owned companies. In the previous conference, we presented the concept and algorithm of the Network power index (NPI) to quantify the indirect influence. In this presentation, we focus on how the change in ownership structure affects NPIs. In particular, we investigate hypothetical scenarios in which China has full control over companies in Hong Kong and Hong Kong completely blocks China's direct control. Because NPI is derived from the distribution of vote shares, political disputes between China and Hong Kong might diffuse impacts among third-party countries. From our simulations, we find which countries gain and lose their influence for each scenario. Interestingly, Japan loses its NPI, whether Hong Kong becomes independent or under the control of China., The Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Japanese - Computational Social Science and Economic Security

Most interdisciplinary research has been limited to the fusion of two fields, such as physics and economics, statistics and political science, and etc. In contrast, fusion in the computational social science involves multiple fields. The social system has become more and more complex with globalization, and social issues can only be solved by tackling them in multiple fields. Using the example of economic security in an increasingly complex global shareholding network, we will show that it is difficult to solve social issues without the fusion of economics, political science, and information science. Furthermore, this paper shows the history of the fusion of political science, economics, and information science, and we will discuss how computational social sciences have a significant place in economic security., Transdisciplinary Federation of Science and Technology, Japanese - How does the Japan and South Korea feud intensify, and is the U.S. able to help?

After examining the structure of global inter-firm networks, we discuss the implications of global linkages at the firm level for the proliferation of ‘conflict minerals’ or dirty products through global buyer-supplier linkages. We show through community structure analysis that firms cross national borders and form communities in the same industry. There are also firms that act as bridges between these communities, so that throughout the world each firm is connected with an average of six business partners. By enhancing this feature of links between firms, it can be used as a countermeasure for risks related to conflict minerals and slave labor issues. By utilizing a simple diffusion model and empirical results for the community structure, we show numerically that regulations on the purchases conflict minerals by limited number of G8 firms belonging to some specific industries would substantially reduce their worldwide use.
