- Designing Biodiversity Credit Schemes: Combining Implementation Scale and Certification Metrics for Farmers' Participation

Research society,Biodiversity credit schemes have gained attention as a mechanism for mobilizing private finance for biodiversity conservation. As primary suppliers of biodiversity outcomes in agricultural landscapes, farmers’ willingness to participate is critical to the success of these schemes. However, little is known about farmers' preferences for biodiversity credit designs, particularly regarding metrics used to certify biodiversity outcomes and the spatial scales at which biodiversity credits are implemented. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide empirical evidence on how certification metrics and implementation scales influence farmers' preferences for voluntary biodiversity credit schemes. A discrete choice experiment with a latent class model were applied to examine Japanese farmers' preferences for alternative biodiversity credit schemes. The results showed substantial heterogeneity in farmers' willingness to participate in biodiversity credit schemes, with approximately half of the farmers belonging to a participation-averse group. In both groups, implementation scale was the primary determinant of participation decisions. Farmers preferred individual farmland scale implementation over coordinated participation. Certification metric exerted limited influence on participation decisions, suggesting that ecosystem-based credits can be implemented without substantially reducing farmers' willingness to participate. Additional bonuses increased participation among farmers already willing to participate, but had little effect on initially reluctant farmers . Membership analysis indicated that willingness to participate was positively associated with biodiversity policy awareness, biodiversity-friendly farming practices, pro-biodiversity attitudes, and expectations of branding-related benefits. Expanding voluntary biodiversity credit markets, therefore, requires not only financial compensation but also information provision, demonstration projects, and communication of potential market benefits.

English, Scientific journal, We produced the first systematic map on how commercial video games engage with biodiversity and conservation. This includes 380 papers, five languages, 450 unique games, empirical and non-empirical literature, as well as an interactive online database of the available evidence. Non-empirical work often scrutinises the extent that game design encourages or condemns exploitation of nature. Empirical papers are overwhelmingly non-experimental; research most often explores how video games represent real-world wildlife, influence players’ ecological perceptions, or inform players’ interactions with virtual nature. Despite the volume of literature, it is difficult to infer the causal effects of video games – especially on driving real-world pro-ecological action. Our map highlights several promising areas for future study, such as: consider the role of player differences on the impact of games, observe actual behaviours and how these change after play, and pursue interdisciplinary collaborations with the games industry for more thorough, applicable, and novel findings. - Extreme heat and humidity reduce the recreational value of urban green spaces

Scientific journal, Urban green spaces provide vital benefits to human well-being, yet increasingly frequent summer heat and humidity undermine their use and value. Here we quantify welfare losses attributable to reduced urban green space use under intensifying summer heat and humidity. We find that high temperature and humidity substantially reduce annual recreational value, with losses over 22 million United States dollars under the most extreme conditions. However, features such as water play areas and air-conditioned indoor facilities partially offset these losses. Our results highlight the vulnerability of urban recreation to climate extremes and demonstrate how targeted cooling infrastructure can support continued use of green spaces. These findings provide evidence to inform climate adaptation strategies aimed at protecting public well-being in cities experiencing rapidly warming summers. - Economic incentives contribute little to reducing agricultural damage from invasive non‐native species: evidence from raccoon management in Hokkaido, Japan

An economic incentive scheme is utilized to enhance citizens' support for managing invasive non‐native species. However, the effectiveness of the incentive scheme in the outcomes of the management remains unclear. This study investigates the effectiveness of economic incentives in managing invasive non‐native species, focusing on their impact on reducing crop damage. Using data from raccoon management in Hokkaido, Japan, and the Japanese agricultural census, our analysis applies an inverse probability‐weighted regression adjustment to evaluate the outcomes.
RESULTS
The findings reveal that economic incentives for capturing raccoons do not significantly reduce crop damage. Additionally, although these incentives increase the number of captured raccoons, the additional captures do not result in measurable reductions in agricultural damage.
CONCLUSION
The absence of positive results underscores the need to develop and evaluate evidence‐based management strategies for invasive non‐native species. This study recommends implementing outcome‐based incentive schemes that align rewards with measurable management goals. Additionally, testing and refining the design of incentive schemes based on their actual effects on management outcomes remain critical. Despite the null results, this study provides valuable insights into designing incentive schemes that garner citizen support while avoiding redundancy. Scientific journal, Human–wildlife conflicts, specifically the damage caused to crops and livestock, pose a significant challenge that affects agriculture. Climate change has exacerbated this issue by altering the distribution and behavior of wildlife. This study examines how farmers respond to the increasing encroachment of Japanese wild boars on farmlands, using panel data at the farm level. The study exploits the expansion of wild boar habitats owing to reduced snow depth. The results show that the presence of wild boars leads to farm exits. In addition, we observe a negative effect on farm size. These effects are driven by an increase in abandoned farmland and a decrease in rented‐in farmland. The findings suggest that human–wildlife conflicts hinder structural changes in agriculture. - Online trade of wild game meat: Implications for public health and conservation

Trade in wild game meat (WGM) is increasing in online markets. However, the distribution of WGM in online trade remains unclear, and our limited knowledge has prevented sustainable WGM consumption that reduces the risks to human health and overcomes the challenges in wildlife management and biodiversity conservation. To explore the trends and challenges of online transactions of WGM, we analyzed the sales data from the online consumer-to-consumer market in Japan. Results revealed a high propensity to trade the lean meat. Our results also showed that transactions of edible offal were significantly positive and relatively more common in wild boar and black bear. In the brown bear, the coefficient for the sales numbers of “hand and foot” was significantly positive. Findings indicate that the online consumer-to-consumer market can be a new opportunity to distribute WGM. The development of guidelines and regulatory systems could help to avoid the risks associated with WGM consumption. - Public Concerns and Liability Perspectives in the Shipowner's Country: Insights from the Oil Spill Incident Involving a Japanese-owned Carrier Near Mauritius

AbstractOil spills caused by ships are a major threat to environmental sustainability, severely damaging marine ecosystems, undermining local economies, and risking public health. Although many spills involve non-local shipping companies, the perspectives of citizens in shipowner countries remain underexplored. Understanding these public concerns is essential for developing sustainable governance, especially regarding liability management and ecological restoration. This study focuses on the MV Wakashio oil spill, where a Japanese-controlled bulk carrier grounded on a coral reef near Mauritius. A nationwide survey of 1,400 Japanese respondents was conducted using systematic sampling. Best-worst scaling (BWS) identified key concerns, and cluster analysis categorized respondents into perspective-based segments. Results showed that health impacts were the top concern, closely followed by the protection of coral reefs and fisheries—critical components of marine sustainability. Cluster analysis revealed three main segments: Ecology, Economy, and Health. Women prioritized health and environmental issues, while men were more concerned with economic aspects. Over 50% of respondents believed that the captain and crew should bear primary liability. Segment differences indicated that individuals with strong ecological concerns attributed greater responsibility to prevent environmental degradation. These findings stress the importance of integrating public views into sustainable policy frameworks, highlighting that long-term marine conservation and responsible shipping practices must be central to oil spill governance and global sustainability efforts.

Scientific journal, The abandonment of irrigated paddy land has increased in Japan, which can cause a decline in food security and biodiversity. Despite the importance of individual decisions, most studies have only examined regional or community-based determinants of paddy land abandonment. This study aimed to uncover the socio-economic determinants affecting individual landowners’ decisions to abandon paddy land, using Japanese agricultural census data (2005, 2010, and 2015) composed of over one million unique paddy landowners. Results showed that low agricultural benefits are a key driver of abandonment, similar to European countries. Conversely, there is a positive correlation between the population of full-time cultivators in a household and paddy land abandonment, which contradicts previous evidence. Although some mosaics of socio-ecological landscapes with high biodiversity formed through long-term human influence (i.e., the Satoyama landscapes) are less-favored agricultural areas, the paddy land in some of these landscapes tends not to be abandoned. These findings support effective policymaking that balances biodiversity conservation and the provision of agroecosystem services in semi-natural landscapes. - Sanitation is the greatest concern in outdoor cat management but ecological message frames promote biodiversity conservation in Japan

Scientific journal, Message framing contributes to an increase in public support for invasive species management. However, little is known about people’s preferences for the multiple objectives of management within different contexts relating to the challenges and benefits of invasive species management. We examine Japanese citizens’ preferences for the goals of free-roaming unowned cat (Felis catus) management in three contextual frames by applying experimentally controlled information and the best–worst scaling technique. Our results indicate that the ecological frame highlighting the ecological impacts of free-roaming unowned cats on native ecosystems significantly increases Japanese citizens’ concern about cat predation, although the frame did not change the preference ranking of goals. There are differences in the effects of message framing depending on cat ownership. The best–worst scaling technique shows that Japanese citizens prefer to maintain a sanitary environment, followed by the prevention of zoonotic diseases. Although the ranking of sanitary environmental management does not depend on cat ownership, the ranking of the other goals differs depending on cat ownership. The findings highlight the importance of strategic message framing and its prioritization in encouraging public support for invasive species management. - Decline in the alpine landscape aesthetic value in a national park under climate change

Scientific journal,Abstract Alpine landscapes are projected to be degraded under climate change, which would threaten their benefits to society. Previous studies, however, have been limited to aesthetic change, and it remains unclear how much the aesthetic change would affect human welfare. To address this issue and gain insights into climate change adaptation policies, we conducted a choice experiment survey using digitally manipulated images based on climate change scenarios and natural scientific knowledge in a mountainous national park in Japan. We uncovered that park visitors appreciate the alpine landscapes that include snow patches on mountains and some types of alpine flowers by analyzing the data from 445 respondents. Conversely, both the invasion of alpine vegetation by dwarf bamboo and the disappearance of snow patches due to climate change substantially deteriorated the perceived aesthetic benefits from alpine landscapes. The economic loss caused by climate-induced landscape degradation was estimated at more than 100 USD per visitor, at maximum; the disappearance of snow patches and invasion by dwarf bamboo reduced the benefits by approximately 13 USD and 101 USD, respectively. Our findings suggest that sustaining the aesthetic value of alpine landscapes in national parks via climate change adaptation has potentially significant economic benefits. By supposing that the mountain national park attracts 70,000 visitors in summer, climate change would cause as a minimum of eight million USD economic loss at the park without appropriate measures annually. English, Scientific journal, Outdoor cats pose substantial threats to native biodiversity, especially on islands. However, cats also provide benefits to people, such as companionship and the killing of pests. Thus, management of outdoor cats is controversial and can lead to conflicts among stakeholders. Although previous studies have examined stakeholders' preferences for outdoor cats and their management, little is known about the differences in their attitudes toward cat occurrences and management across habitats. Identifying these attitudinal differences would provide useful knowledge for policy makers about zoning management. We conducted structured interviews with residents in Amami Oshima Island, Japan, to evaluate the residents' attitudes to outdoor cats' occurrence and their management across habitats (Forest, Rural, and Town areas). Furthermore, we compared the attitudes of cat- owners and non-owners. The results show that the Forest was least preferred as an outdoor cat habitat. Lethal options as a management strategy were unacceptable to the residents, whereas adoption was acceptable in all areas. Cat-owners showed a significantly higher acceptance toward outdoor cats in Town and Rural areas than did non-owners; they also showed a lower acceptance of lethal options and a higher acceptance toward Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) than non-owners. These findings imply that it is difficult to achieve consensus regarding outdoor cat management, especially in town and rural areas; however, outdoor cats from these areas move to the forests and pose a threat to the endangered species. Communication efforts with both cat-owners and non-owners should fill these attitudinal gaps among stakeholders and lead to effective management. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

本研究の目的は、農産物市場における生物多様性保全の付加価値を定量的に明らかにするとともに、「環境配慮型」農産物の販売を促進するためにはどのような情報提供が有効であるか、実際の消費者行動から解明することである。
【研究1】市場分析:全国の道の駅等に付随する産地直売所やJA等、日本の小売店で販売されるお米の販売データを分析し、野生生物に配慮して生産されたことを示すラベル(Wildlife-friendly farming label: WFFラベル)がお米の価格に与える影響、つまり価格プレミアムを明らかにした。分析の結果、WFFラベルは、お米の価格を上昇させており、WFFラベル表示のある米は、表示されていないお米と比較して、約20%の価格プレミアムを有していることが示された。
【研究2】環境価値評価:環境評価手法の 1 つである選択型実験を適用し、既存の農産物市場では顕示されていない生物多様性保全の付加価値を評価する。これまでに現地調査およびオンライン調査で収集したデータについて、それぞれ複数の統計モデルを適用した分析を実施した。
前者の分析では、消費者の平均的な支払意思額は鳥類を用いたラベルが両生類や魚類を用いたラベルよりも高かった一方、それらの選好には消費者間で多様であることを示した。
また後者の分析では、認証の内容、つまり、ラベルに表示される種(魚類や鳥類)や認証方法(生物多様性への配慮をどのように認証するか)によって、生物多様性に配慮したお米の付加価値が異なることが示した。例えば、魚類を提示した認証ラベルでは農法を認証する方法が付加価値を高める一方で、鳥類を提示した認証ラベルでは保全成果を認証する方法が付加価値を高めることを示した。
【研究3】経済実験:「環境配慮型」農産物の販売促進に資するフィールド実験の実施に向け、小売店や農家等、お米の販売等に関する人々と意見交換を開始した。

今年度は、「農林業センサス」や「農業経営統計調査」の個票パネルデータや「農林業センサス・集落カード」を用いて、これらの農林統計調査の個票データの個票間リンケージを行った。さらに、構築されたデータを用いて生産関数を推定することにより、TFPの計測を行い、農家レベルの生産性の動態をミクロデータに基づき作成したパネルデータにより明らかにした。
具体的には、農家レベルのデータセットを農家レベルの作付け品目毎のインプット・アウトプットを含む農家-作付け品目レベルのデータセットに拡大した。2004年から2014年のデータを使い、トランスログ型の生産関数を推定した。なお、資本については、粗資本ストックを求め、BY法から資本ストックを推定した。TFP は、(i)時間-作付け作物-規模の固定効果、(ii) 集落-時間の固定効果、(iii)作付け作物-時間の固定効果、(iv)誤差項に分解し、推定された時間-作付け作物-規模の固定効果からあらためて農家レベルのTFPを求め、11年間の農業生産性の動態を作物毎にまとめた。また、推定されたTFPと投入量の関係から要素投入のmisallocationの存在を確認した。

外来生物は生物多様性の重大な脅威の一つである。この脅威への最も費用対効果の高い対策は、保全上重要な区域への外来生物の持込を未然に防止することである。本課題は、持込を抑止する区域として高山域を、抑止する生物群として植物を取り上げる。
本年度は、まず国内における高山域における外来植物の定着の実態を明らかにするために、国内の複数の山域で植生調査を実施した。この調査は次年度も継続して実施する予定である。また、靴を介したヒトによる高山帯への意図しない種子の持ち込みの発生の時空間的動態も複数山域における野外調査と市民参加型調査によって実施した。時間変動についてはその存在と規定要因を明らかにした。空間動態については、次年度も引き続き調査を実施する。併せて現地調査で得られたサンプルから得た種子の同定の円滑化のためのDNAバーコーディングのための技術開発を行った。さらに、靴の清掃により高山域に持込まれる種子の数を抑制できるにも関わらず、登山者が靴の清掃を行っていない実態の障壁は、外来生物の影響に対する無知識、無関心ではなく、関心がありつつ靴を清掃しない事(無行動)であることが知られている。この無行動の解消する方法として、行動経済学的な手法であるナッジの一種である、足跡マークの利用が有効であることを、登山口におけるランダム化比較試験デザインを用いて実証した。さらに足跡マークを用いた行動変容(靴の清掃の実施)は、特に登山者のうち外来種の侵入の影響に対する知識の程度、および外来種持込についての当事者意識の程度が高い程効果的であることも明らかにした。

本研究では、外来種管理に係る報奨金制度の因果効果を定量的に明らかにするとともに、外来種管理の協力意欲向上にはどのような報奨金デザインが良いかを明らかにすることで、外来種管理の推進に向けたより実効性のある報奨金制度デザインの提案を最終目的としている。
本年度は、北海道におけるアライグマ捕獲に対する報奨金制度を含む経済的インセンティブの付与政策が捕獲等数や農業被害に及ぼす因果効果の定量分析に取り組んだ。具体的には、昨年度に整理・収集した捕獲等数や報奨金、農業被害額に関するデータと集落の農業状況に関するデータを結合したデータに経済分析を適用することで、以下の3点が分かった。アライグマのワナかけ日数は農業被害額には影響を与えないが、捕獲数は農業被害額の減少に貢献することがわかった。また、捕獲に対する報奨金の付与はアライグマのワナかけ日数や捕獲数、農業被害額に影響を及ぼさないことがわかった。一方で捕獲個体の処理に対する経済的支援などが捕獲数に影響を及ぼすことがわかった。本研究の結果は、アライグマによる農業被害の緩和には、捕獲に対するより包括的な経済的インセンティブの付与が重要であることを示唆している。
上記の経済分析に加えて、野生動物と人との軋轢が社会に及ぼする負の影響を金銭価値で評価し、報奨金制度の妥当性の検証を行うために環境経済評価手法を適用したアンケート調査の設計に取り組んだ。具体的には、アライグマやヌートリアなどの外来種を含む獣害を引き起こしている野生動物15種を選定し、コンジョイント分析の1つである選択型実験デザインを確定させた。さらに、選択型実験におけるシナリオやアンケート調査の配布対象などを確定させた。

Limited resources are available for invasive non native species management. Strategies and techniques that are appropriate to the social situation and the invasion stage are required to achieve eradication and control. In this study, we evaluated the local residents' preferences for management techniques, and obtained knowledge on how to shift methods with the support from the residents. The feasibility of eradication was also assessed for spread species. The realistic management goals as a decision support were suggested.
