Takanori Sato was born in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1992. He received his Ph.D. degree in the field of media and network technologies from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2018. He was a Research Fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) from 2017 to 2019. In 2019, he moved to University of Hyogo as an assistant professor. He is currently an associate professor in Hokkaido University. His research interests include the theoretical and numerical studies of optical fibers and photonic circuits using the coupled mode theory and the finite element method. He is a member of the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE), the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Optical Society of America (OSA).

    Scientific journal, We designed a mode equalizer to handle mode-dependent loss (MDL) in mode division multiplexing systems. The proposed equalizer is based on a step-index long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and designed to attenuate the LP01 core mode while providing high transmission of the LP11 core mode. For a practical fiber design, we assumed a coating material with a higher refractive index than the cladding. Consequently, numerous leaky cladding modes should be analyzed. This study focuses on identifying the optimal core parameters to efficiently equalize MDL.

    English, Scientific journal, Small silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based tunable O-band TE0-TE1 and TE0-TE2 mode multiplexers (MUXs) based on phase-mismatched asymmetric directional couplers (ADCs) are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. We designed ADCs with an intentionally phase-mismatched coupling region to suppress wavelength dependence and improve fabrication error tolerance. The fabricated O-band TE0-TE2 mode MUX can maintain more than −0.71dB transmission by heating. Moreover, we proposed three-section tapered ADCs (3STADCs) divided into three regions. We theoretically show that the TE0-TE1 and TE0-TE2 mode MUXs based on the 3STADC have more than −0.28dB and −0.36dB transmission within ±10nm waveguide width fabrication error, respectively.

    A design method for the athermal Mach–Zehnder wavelength filter, which is available in the Si-on-insulator platform, is proposed. We can obtain much higher fabrication-tolerant characteristics by introducing a condition, minimizing the dependence of the waveguide width on the athermal condition, to the wavelength filter design. Our design has the arm waveguides divided into four sections, and each section is appropriately designed to exploit athermal characteristics. We also reveal the relationship between the arm length (corresponding to the footprint) and the waveguide width (relating to the propagation loss) from the formularized equations for the wavelength filter design. One example of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer filter designed by the proposed method has lower spectral shift characteristics less than 1 pm K−1 entire C band even if the waveguide width errors occur, compared with the conventional design.

    English, Scientific journal, Ultracompact mode multiplexers based on mosaic structure for various wavelength bands designed by Bayesian technique are investigated. C-, O-, and C + O band, TE0-TE1 2-mode multiplexers can be designed with the same footprint, by only changing the mosaic-pattern, showing the great flexibility of mosaic-based devices. Bayesian direct binary search method is used for the design, and it is demonstrated that the Bayesian technique is superior to conventional design method in terms of the best-structure search for the same number of iterations. The designed devices are fabricated for Si-waveguide platform, and the proof-of-concept results are obtained. These results indicate that the mosaic-based devices are promising candidates for future compact optical transceivers.

    Japanese, A sub-Terahertz band above 100 GHz will be used in 6G for extremely high-speed communication. In such a high frequency band, channels change rapidly in time-varying environments. The channel information obtained using pilot symbols may deviate from the actual channel information over time, resulting in degradation of channel characteristics. Thus, it is expected to be effective to predict channels at a future time. Since the number of multipaths in sub-THz bands is extremely small, we can resolve them and predict the channel. In this paper, we assume a MIMO system with a hybrid beamforming architecture, and resolve multipaths incident on a subarray in the delay domain with FISTA, one of the compressed sensing algorithms. Using the resolved multipaths, we predict the future channels. It is shown that the prediction technique works well, and that we can achieve the normalized mean square error from -30 dB to -20 dB.

    English, A sub-Terahertz band is envisioned to play a great role in 6G to achieve extreme high data-rate communication. In addition to very wide band transmission, we need spatial multiplexing using a hybrid MIMO system. A recently presented paper, however, reveals that the number of observed multipath components in a sub-Terahertz band is very few in indoor environments. A channel with few multipath components is called sparse. The number of layers (streams), i.e. multiplexing gain in a MIMO system does not exceed the number of multipaths. The sparsity may restrict the spatial multiplexing gain of sub-Terahertz systems, and the poor multiplexing gain may limit the data rate of communication systems. This paper describes fundamental considerations on sub-Terahertz MIMO spatial multiplexing in indoor environments. We examined how we should steer analog beams to multipath components to achieve higher channel capacity. Furthermore, for different beam allocation schemes, we investigated eigenvalue distributions of a channel Gram matrix, power allocation to each layer, and correlations between analog beams. Through simulation results, we have revealed that the analog beams should be steered to all the multipath components to lower correlations and to achieve higher channel capacity.

    Scientific journal, We propose two types of mosaic-based 3-dB couplers for wavelengths around 2.1 µm. For type I, the proposed device provides excess loss of dB and imbalance of over the wavelength range from 2.06 to 2.14 µm. Compared with the standard multimode-interference-based 3-dB coupler, the imbalance is improved by . For type II, coupling length in the multimode-interference region is about three times shorter than the one based on multimode-interference theory. It provides excess loss of and imbalance of over the wavelength range from 2.06 to 2.14 µm. Both proposed devices show high fabrication tolerance to hole diameter variation. Especially for type II, the fabrication-tolerant direct binary search was effective to obtain such a structure. These mosaic-based 3-dB couplers will play an important role in highly integrated photonic circuits.

    A novel direct-binary-search algorithm for the design of fabrication-tolerant photonic-crystal-like subwavelength structures is proposed. In the proposed method, structures based on holes with different diameters are considered to enhance the device performance under diameter variation. The usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated through the design of a fabrication-tolerant four-mode waveguide crossing in the 2 μm waveband. With the proposed method, the transmission of TE3 mode is increased by 4.9% (for diameter of 130 nm) and 9.5% (for diameter of 150 nm) on average of 15 samples, compared with the conventional direct-binary-search method. The designed device provides insertion losses of <0.87 dB and crosstalks of <−24 dB in spite of diameter variations of ±10 nm from the ideal diameter.

    本研究では、既存の電子デバイス性能の限界を突破し得る要素技術の1つとして「光演算プロセッサ」に着目し、光で演算を行う行列積演算回路と光全加算器の設計・開発に取り組んできた。
    令和元年度は初期検討として、簡易な構造により素子を小型化できるシリコンリング共振器を用いた行列積演算回路を設計した。3×3ユニタリ行列積演算が可能であることを示し、数値解析結果より良好な特性が得られることを確認した。一般的なシリコンリング共振器では、1つのリングにバス導波路とアクセス導波路を接続するのに対して、2つのリングを結合させたシリコンリング共振器を用いることで、透過帯域をフラットにするだけではなく、多入力・多出力の光配線レイアウトの簡素化に成功している。また、直線導波路に対して熱や電圧を加えるタイプの位相シフタやマッハツェンダ干渉計を用いた従来のデバイスよりも、1/10から1/100程度まで小型化可能であることを明らかにした。一般に、回路構成に共振器を用いることにより、デバイスサイズと遅延のトレードオフが生じることが問題視されているが、Q値が800程度のゆるやかな共振ピークを持つリング共振器を2段に結合した場合、共振器通過時の遅延(出力が定常状態となるまでの時間)が5ps程度となり、実用上問題ないことを確認した。さらに、提案構造に用いられているシリコンリング共振器は、光全加算器の構成にも取り入れることが可能であり、現在その設計に取りかかっている。

  • 全光信号処理のための超小型全光ダイオードの実現に向けた研究

    光通信機器における信号処理を全て光信号で行う「全光信号処理」を実現する全光デバイスは、デバイスの消費電力を3桁程度削減可能であるものとして期待されている。これまで、2010年には全光スイッチ、2012年には全光メモリが実験的に確認されたことで,世界的な注目を集めてきたが、光整流ダイオード(全光ダイオード)については、順方向透過率や整流特性、波長特性が乏しく、未だ実現が困難な状況である。そこで本研究では、優れた整流特性および高い実現可能性を有する全光ダイオードを設計開発することを目的として、フォトニック結晶共振器を用いたシリコン全光ダイオードの研究を進めてきた。
    前年度までに、従来報告されてきた全光ダイオードと比較して、より実現性の高く、高い透過特性および整流特性を有するダイオードが実現可能であることを理論的に確認した。
    2年目となる本年度は、前年度設計した全光ダイオードを作製し、測定実験を行う予定であったが、フォトニック結晶デバイスを設計通りに作製することができず、ダイオード動作の実験実証までには至らなかった。具体的には、フォトニック結晶光共振器の入出力導波路部分に問題があり、空孔間隔や、曲げ導波路の配置を工夫して、シミュレーション通りの実験測定結果が得られない問題を回避した。現在、改めて設計デバイスのチップ作製を行っている最中であり、実際に実験測定のフェーズに入るのは次年度以降となる。
