Two major fluids of the earth are the ocean and the atmosphere, each of which influence the other. The influence of the atmosphere onto the ocean is strong and clear, while the opposing oceanic influence onto the atmosphere is not well understood. In this paper, several results of co-variability of the ocean and the atmosphere and interaction between them are introduced. Specific topics are seasonal variability over the tropical Pacific, decadal variability over and around the North Pacific, and mid-latitude air-sea interaction from a point of view of process-oriented studies. In order to identify oceanic impacts onto the atmosphere, especially using data analysis, it is useful to detect key features. Such key features are propagation signal commonly found in the atmosphere and the ocean with a speed of oceanic propagation for annual variability over the tropical Pacific, oscillation in the atmosphere for the decadal variability, and atmospheric signatures on oceanic spatial scales for the mid-latitude air-sea interactions. Some ideas behind the studies are also introduced.,

Progress in oceanographic research in the past decade is reviewed and future direction in the Japanese oceanographic research in the next decade is discussed, mainly from the physical oceanographic perspective. The progress and future direction of research, as well as its significance and the research infrastructure needed for its implementation, are presented for six regions (coastal waters, marginal seas, tropics, mid-latitudes, polar oceans, and deep layer) and two additional elements (sea surface and salinity) that are related to all the six regions. The needed research infrastructure is summarized in the final part. Recent international trend and the Japanese roll expected in the trend are also discussed., Japanese - Decadal Vision in Oceanography (I)―Discussions in the physical oceanography subgroup of the future planning committee, The Oceanographic Society of Japan―

Japanese - Climate and marine birds and mammals in the North Pacific.

Important results are as follows. 1) The world-leading sea level rise predicted east off Japan is mainly caused by the local warming of the ocean carried by the water mass called subtropical mode water. 2) The reason why the sea level at the coast of Japan does not rise as much as sea level east off Japan is due to the shield effect caused by the coastal trapped wave propagating from the subarctic region to the south along the coast. 3) Compared with the dynamical downscale results, the climate model results are generally reliable for the coastal sea-level rise of the four main islands of Japan. 4) Uncertainty upper limits of sea-level rise of the four main islands of Japan and coast of East Asia are larger than those for the global ocean average. 5) The past high sea-level along the Japan around 1950 was caused the change of wind accompanied by natural variation.

Ekman pumping is a fundamental tool for understanding the causality in ocean variability except for the equator, where Ekman pumping becomes infinity. We have solved this difficulty by proposing and producing Ekman-pumping forced model for the first time and its adjuring backward integration version. By conducting a series of numerical experiments, we have found that off-equatorial Ekman pumping contribute more strongly in the Indian Ocean rather than in the Pacific Ocean for the equatorial upper layer thickness variability. Also, off-equatorial Ekman pumping contributes more for large-magnitude events of Indian Ocean dipole mode than for small magnitude events.

By using numerical modelling and data analysis, we have discovered the mid-latitude ocean influences on a wide range of atmospheric phenomena, including termination of Baiu rain season over the northwestern North Pacific, the route and strength of tropical cyclones, Europe blocking and its impact on cold spells. We have found that the pressure adjustment mechanism works over major western boundary currents in the mid-latitudes globally. We have developed a new diagnostic method that enable us to determine mechanisms near surface (10 m altitude) winds for time-mean field, and have showed that both the pressure adjustment mechanism and the vertical mixing mechanism working but differently. Also, we have reported for the first time that observed decadal variability of the Kuroshio Extension is due to the jet-trapped Rossby wave, and that the decadal Kuroshio Extension changes impact Japanese coastal sea-level.

In order to explorer atmospheric responses to ocean currents such as the Kuroshio, and to know possibility that the atmospheric responses further feedback onto the ocean, researches are conducted with a focus on the Kuroshio in the East China Sea (ECS). Data analysis found "deep heating (atmospheric response) mode" over the Kuroshio in ECS accompanied by prominent diurnal rain and cloud variability in the middle of the Baiu-Meiyu season. Numerical studies showed that ECS causes stronger developments of low-pressure systems around Japan and that seasonal ECS warming plays an important role in heavy rain events over Kyushu in July. In-situ ship observations revealed weakening of surface winds over the Kuroshio in winter and showed an important role of convective available potential energy in precipitation over the Kuroshio in Baiu-Meiyu season. These studies are important contributions for rapidly developing research field of mid-latitude air-sea interaction.

We reported in a cover article of Nature (13 Mar. 2008) that the Gulf Stream causes a series of atmospheric responses, not limited to the atmospheric boundary layer, but penetrate to the free troposphere. Also, we found two different atmospheric modes, i.e., the shallow heating mode prominent in winter and the deep heating mode in summer. The difference of the summer and winter atmospheric responses is associated with the atmospheric stability between the two seasons. A long-term numerical integration of an Atmosphere-Ocean Coupled General Circulation model realistically reproduces major features of the recent satellite surface-wind observations. Furthermore, the first observational evidence of wave breaking, which is expected to cause low sea-surface temperatures, associated with ocean tide is obtained.

A number of studies are conducted for a climate change over the North Pacific around 1998/99, as well as climate studies which may be a basis of understanding of such a rapid climate change. Here, some major results are described. The principal investigator of this research proposed previously that climatic regime shifts over the North Pacific appeared to be caused as synchronization between a 20-year oscillation and 50-70-year oscillation. In order to understand some basic mechanism of such resonance, a simple delayed oscillator model with periodic modulation of nonlinear feedback and that with periodic forcing are investigated. The basic mechanism of the nonlinear resonance associated with a concept of threshold has been clarified. It was found that substantial changes of sea-ice occurred around 1998/99 in marginal seas around the North Pacific. In the Bering Sea, spring sea-ice reduced around 1999 in the eastern Bering Sea. This change was likely to be caused by a low-pressure anomaly over Alaska. In the Okhotsk Sea, although long-term trend of sea-ice reduction continued until the mid-1990s, in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, sea-ice areas were larger than usual. It was found that for this long-term fluctuation of sea-ice, atmospheric conditions in autumn, not in winter previous studies focused, are important. For large-scale oceanic frontal zones, SST changes including those associated with 1998/99 change were investigated using a newly gridded high-resolution SST data (The dataset is available through the internet. You can find via google with "Minobe Maeda 1dg SST"). It was found that the subtropical front exhibited a large change in 1998/99, but not in the subpolar front. This is in contrast to the 1970s climatic regime shift, when a signal is more prominent in the subpolar front. Also, it is found that the winter strength of the Aleutian Low, which is a major atmospheric circulation changes associated with the regime shifts, exhibits bimodality after removal of a linear trend. This suggests that the nonlinear feedback is important in the climate feedback underlying the regime shifts.

As a platform to integrate the entire project, we have developed a coupled ice-ocean model of the Arctic, by which the responses of the ice-ocean system to the atmospheric variability are examined, and also bio-geochemical processes are interpreted in the physical-biogeochemical version. Once the atmospheric pressure pattern is given the Arctic Oscillation (AO) signal, the model has reproduced the observed sea ice cover variability at a decadal period. The water exchange through the Fram Strait is found to increase responding to the intensified Polar Vortex. Deep convection and dense water spreading are the important oceanic processes which are not explicitly resolved in the Arctic model, and are parameterized on the basis of high resolution models. An observational study has provided better understanding of under-ice mixing.
The further analysis of the Arctic model has revealed the feedback mechanisms, by which the Arctic Oscillation and ice-cover variability could enhance each other. Once the ice cover reduces, more heat is given to the atmosphere, which tends to intensify the Polar Vortex. Its wind pattern increases the water exchange through the Fram Strait and gives favor to the Atlantic Water penetrating into the Arctic Ocean. Then, more sea ice melts. This positive feedback comes together with a self-oscillating system of the Arctic-Atlantic Ocean, and excites the AO.
Cloud and radiation data collected by the Soviet Union have been analyzed to present a cloud increase in the recent 40 years. This effect on the surface heat flux is equivalent to that arising from the albedo decrease due to the ice reduction. Although the sea ice has been claimed to be an important indicator for global warming in the real climate and global warming simulation, it has been strongly suggested that more parameters than sea ice and temperature should be looked into carefuly in the comparison between observed data and model results.
Bio-geochemical processes are important environmental components and also crucial to global warming through feedback to the physical component. Observations have been conducted in the Bering Sea, Baffin Bay, the Baltic Sea and Saroma Lagoon, identifying a primary species of phytoplankton in each area. Their roels for global warming have been estimated.
Hydrochemical data collected by the Soviet Union include dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, phosphate, nitrate and silicate. This data set has been analyzed, giving an evidence of vertical stretching of the water column in the Canada Basin. The vertical motion can be interpreted as a consequence of Ekman convergence or divergence responding to the AO. This striking result is expressed as the most recent outcome of this project.
