Understanding habitat shifts across life stages is crucial to conserve Lefua echigonia , an endangered freshwater fish in Japan. This species has a drifting period in its larval and juvenile stages, resulting in high mortality. Therefore, it is essential to understand the habitat requirements in particular during these stages for effective conservation. In this study, the microhabitats of this species across six total length (TL) classes were selected to identify ontogenetic habitat shifts. Monthly fish sampling and environmental measurements were conducted over a three‐year period along a 1.3‐km spring‐fed stream, from the downstream end to the upstream end. Habitat characteristics of this species were analyzed using random forests at a point‐based microhabitat scale. In addition, the relationship between the TL and the water velocity at each cross‐section was examined. The habitat characteristics of this species vary markedly among drifting larvae and juveniles, and benthic adults. Shallow water depth is an important factor for drifting larvae and juveniles, as it provides refuges from predators. In contrast, adult fish prefer low‐velocity environments, indicating that microhabitat use is associated with body size and swimming ability and low‐velocity refuges is formed by streambed substrates in fast‐flowing reaches. English, Scientific journal, Pest control is crucial in crop production; however, the use of chemical pesticides, the primary method of pest control, poses environmental issues and leads to insecticide resistance in pests. To overcome these issues, laser zapping has been studied as a clean pest control technology against the nocturnal cotton leafworm, Spodoptera litura, which has high fecundity and causes severe damage to various crops. For better sighting during laser zapping, it is important to measure the coordinates and speed of moths under low-light conditions. To achieve this, we developed an automatic detection pipeline based on point cloud time series data from stereoscopic images. We obtained 3D point cloud data from disparity images recorded under infrared and low-light conditions. To identify S. litura, we removed noise from the data using multiple filters and a support vector machine. We then computed the size of the outline box and directional angle of the 3D point cloud time series to determine the noisy point clouds. We visually inspected the flight trajectories and found that the size of the outline box and the movement direction were good indicators of noisy data. After removing noisy data, we obtained 68 flight trajectories, and the average flight speed of free-flying S. litura was 1.81 m/s. - Temporal variables improve a spatiotemporal species distribution model for the nonnative freshwater fish Candidia temminckii

Japanese, Scientific journal,It is essential to study the mechanisms of the decomposition of anaerobic organic matter such as denitrification, iron reduction and sulfate reduction caused by oxygen depletion when considering the conservation and restoration of a closed water area under organic contamination. In this study, we observed the water quality of a reservoir with significant organic contamination due to humic acid, and evaluated quantitatively the water quality changes over time with respect to the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) as well as sulfides, ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), phosphate-phosphorus (PO43--P), and sulfate ions (SO42-) during an anoxic period. The study showed that the changes of the ORP under anaerobic conditions can be modeled using a logistic regression based on the number of consecutive anoxic days. It was suggested that the higher the initial concentration of nitrate nitrogen was. the smaller declining rate of the ORP was from an oxidized state to a reductive state. Furthermore, it was shown that the increase of NH4+-N,PO43--P, and sulfides over time, as well as the reduction of SO42-, can be evaluated using a linear regression based on the number of days elapsed in which both an ORP level of less than -200 mV and a dissolved oxygen level of 0 mg/l are sustained. The dynamics of inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur compounds can be estimated and predicted using the two above-mentioned regression models without any mathematical model on the complex biochemical processes. This is valid information for the analysis of aquatic environments, which can contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of closed water areas.

English, Effects of the widely used herbicide diuron on growth of the freshwater green alga, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, were investigated in C medium with different nitrate (15, 150 or 1501 μM) or phosphate (1.6, 16.3 or 163 μM) levels at three water temperatures (10, 20 and 30°C) for 144 h. Growth was inhibited by 16 μg L–1 diuron in all cases. Results from generalized linear model (GLM) analysis showed that the growth inhibition rate by diuron treatment was significantly decreased by increased temperature and decreased nutrient levels. Our result indicated that diuron toxicity may decrease under conditions of high temperature and low nutrients. Therefore, nutrient levels at different water temperatures should be considered in risk assessments to learn the actual impact of diuron in real environmental conditions. - Application of a simple genetic algorithm for the calibration of aquatic ecosystem model of an agricultural pond

Japanese, Scientific journal, Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) has widely been applied to the evaluation of habitat suitability of target species. Despite the differences in modelling approaches, no study has clarified the effects of data types and categorization methods of habitat variables on the habitat evaluation. In this paper, we assessed the effects on the habitat preference curves and model accuracy in the HSI-based habitat evaluation for Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). As a result, all the preference curves from the different types of data showed the same trend of preference to a deeper water depth, a lower current velocity, a larger lateral cover ratio and a smaller percent vegetation coverage, in which differences were found among the categorization methods. It is also found that the data types and categorization methods have different effects on the habitat modelling, which appeared differently by performance measures used. This case study of Japanese medaka illustrates the importance and effectiveness of a modelling approach with consideration to the ecological characteristics of target species. - A discussion on the accuracy-complexity relationship in modelling fish habitat preference using genetic Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems

English, Scientific journal, Increasing concern over the human impact on the flora and fauna of rivers and their surrounding environment has produced a strong demand for operational tools to assess these issues and to develop mitigation procedures. To realize sustainable development in agriculture, it is essential to grasp ecology of organisms dwelling in and around paddy environment. To date, many researchers have proposed various models to quantify the habitat preference of aquatic and terrestrial animals. Although some models have achieved accurate prediction of spatial distribution of target species, only the standard habitat suitability index (HSI), based on resource selection functions, has been applied in a practical level for its simplicity in the modeling procedure. However, only a few studies have verified accuracy and the difference among standard type indices in predicting habitat selection. It is very important to clarify their ability to capture the habitat preference of target species. The present study has verified the prediction ability of the HSIs using field study focusing on Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes), one of the most common fish dwelling in paddy environment in Japan. Consequently, Vanderploeg and Scavia's relativized electivity showed the best accuracy among the indices. - An information-theoretic approach for model selection in habitat preference evaluation of Japanese medaka ( Oryzias latipes).

Japanese, Scientific journal, It is known that habitat use of riverine fish depends on multiplicity among physical environments and waterquality. Habitat selections even differ between conspecific fish in rivers and hatcheries. For this reason, it is necessary to develop habitat preference models in the field studies. In this study, a modeling technique for instream fish habitat preference was proposed. The preference intensity of Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes), dwelling in an agricultural canal with the three environmental factors of water depth, current velocity and cover ratio, was quantified using the on-the-spot examination data. For explicitly taking essential vagueness of fish behaviour into consideration and for searching for an optimal model structure, two artificial intelligent techniques were introduced: a simplified fuzzy reasoning method and a simple genetic algorithm, respectively. Therewithal, the uncertainty contained in measurement as errors or dispersions of physical environment were positively taken into the model using symmetric triangular fuzzy numbers. The fuzzy preference intensity model was thus constructed, which resulted in a positive agreement between predicted and observed distribution of the Japanese Medaka resident in an agricultural canal. - An adaptive modeling technique for instream fish habitat preference of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes)

Japanese, Research institution, 近年、治水機能や利水機能だけでなく、自然環境の保全・創出にも重点を置いた多自然型工法による河川改修の試みが各地で展開されてきている。これに伴い、河川改修の影響を予測することや種々の河川改修の効果を比較・検討するための手法が求められている。九州大学水環境学研究室では、室内実験を中心に水深、流速、遮蔽の3環境因子に対するメダカの選好特性のモデリング研究を進めてきた。しかしながら、室内実験より求められた選好曲線では生息場として適していると判断されるにもかかわらず、実際には魚量が極めて少ない場合があることが観察されるなど、実河川における魚類の行動解明には至っていない。本研究では農業用水路においてフィールド調査を行い、その観測データをもとに遺伝的アルゴリズムを用いた最適値探索を行い、流速、遮蔽率および水深の3環境因子に対するメダカの選好強度モデルを検討した。定式化には、Hiramasu and Shikasho(2002)の選好強度モデルをもとに、観測した個体分布密度からメダカの選好強度を定式化し、その再現性について検討した。フィールド調査の結果をもとに単純GAにより最適値探索された選好強度式から流速では3.8cm/s、遮蔽率は35%、水深は8cmで選好強度が最大値として計算された。また、それにより計算されたメダカの予測分布密度は、観測されたメダカの実測個体分布密度と、ばらつきはあるが相関関係を示した。メダカの空間分布の傾向をほぼ再現できたことから、本手法の妥当性が示唆された。 - Mathematical modeling of preference intensity of Japanese medaka fish for instream water environment using fuzzy reasoning

Japanese, Scientific journal, Fish behavior is essentially vague and the behavioral responses to an environmental change vary widely among both individuals and circumstances, which suggests a necessity to positively take the uncertainty into consideration when constructing preference intensity models to environmental factors. In this research, the essential vagueness of behavioral responses of Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes) was positively taken into consideration and the preference intensities of Japanese Medaka to the three environmental factors of water depth, current velocity and cover were quantified by fuzzy logic modeling and laboratory open-channel experiments. A simple genetic algorithm was introduced to search for an optimal structure of a preference intensity model. The fuzzy preference intensity model was then successfully verified by laboratory water-tank experiments and on-the-spot examinations. The results indicated that the fuzzy preference intensity model showed a good agreement between the predicted and observed distributions of Japanese Medaka and that current velocity strongly affected the environmental preference intensity of Japanese Medaka. - ファジィ推論を用いたメダカの環境選好性の定量化

本研究では、水域ネットワーク情報基盤の基軸となる高解像度水環境観測技術や情報統合アルゴリズムを開発し、観測データに基づく非定常水環境解析システムを構築するとともに、高解像度な生物の空間分布等の観測結果から、生物の空間分布モデルや個体行動・群集動態モデルの開発と高精度化に取り組みます。最終的には、要素モデルの統合と可視化により、河川~農業水路網における統合生態水理環境シミュレータの開発を目指します。

This project aimed at the application of biotelemtry for fish tracking as well as advanced computational intelligence such as random forests and other machine learning methods for predictive habitat modelling. We established a 430-m study reach in a river flowing through agriculture-dominated landscape in Fukuoka, Japan. Totaled 40 fish individuals, consisted of 4 species, were used as test fish. We successfully obtained movement tracks based on which habitat analyses have been done to identify diurnal changes in spatial distribution of each individual. The high-resolution fish positioning can be used in a small river, contributing to a better understanding and assessment of aquatic ecosystems for sustainable development.

To improve the supply of mango fruits, it is important to understand the production condition, the distribution system and physiological characteristics for fresh fruits. In this study, we evaluated the water management in mango orchards of‘Nam Dok Mai' in Thailand. Moreover, we investigated the actual distribution condition by ship and by air and the effects of the postharvest environment of fresh mango fruit on its physiological characteristics during distribution from Thailand to Japan. We used four quality indicators, namely respiration rate, peel color, hardness score, total sugar content, to quantify fresh fruit quality after harvest. Every indicator decreased with storage period and high temperature (15~35 degree Celsius). Moreover, accumulated respiration had high correlation with peel color, hardness score and sugar contents, respectively. Fruit quality changes during distribution were used to evaluate the potential market loss.

The organic pollution due to runoff of nitrogen and phosphorous has been widely spreading in urbanizing agricultural watersheds in Southeast Asian developing countries, and the development of integrated watershed management tools becomes to be an urgent issue. However, it is often difficult to obtain the numerical information of watersheds and hydrological and meteorological data that would be absolutely necessary in developing the integrated watershed management tools. In this research, the integrated watershed management tools have been developed and applied to urbanizing agricultural watersheds in developing countries in Southeast Asia only with scarce numerical information of watersheds and observed data. In conducting the research, satellite image remote sensing as well as machine learning techniques such as pattern recognition, support vector machine, global optimization techniques and so on, have been positively utilized in order to supplement the scarce data.

This project aimed to develop a habitat evaluation system that can deal with spatiotemporal dynamics of fish habitat preference. Two hybrid models of a genetic Takagi-sugeno fuzzy model and a fuzzy neural networks model were developed and evaluated for its accuracy and applicability in ecology. Four major achievements in this project are as follows :(1) laboratory experiment on the diurnal changes of habitat preference of Japanese medaka,(2) new method for optimization of a genetic Takagi-sugeno fuzzy model,(3) evaluation of effects of data quality on a habitat preference model,(4) application of fuzzy habitat preference model to topmouth gudgeon.

In this research, we have been aiming at the development of integrated water environment management models with the function of predicting and evaluating the watershed nutrient runoff loads of nitrogen and phosphorous from urbanizing agricultural watersheds in Asian monsoon region. The distributed-parameter models have been constructed by utilizing GIS techniques together with the detailed watershed information such as DEM, land utilization, river network and point sources. The prediction accuracy has been improved by innovating artificial intelligence techniques and time-frequency analyses when modeling sub-processes of nutrient runoff loads from various sources and water quality dynamics in closed water bodies, because it is generally difficult to quantify those sub-processes accurately.
The model construction and validation have been conducted at two watersheds that have entirely different watershed characteristics, the Chikugo River watershed and the Zuibaiji River watershed. The Chikugo River watershed has a largest watershed area in Kyushu Island, Japan and a huge variety of land utilization in the watershed, while the Zuibaiji River watershed is located at the west of Fukuoka City, Japan and a typical urbanizing agricultural watershed with a relatively small watershed area. The models have been constructed and validated in the watersheds by quantifying each of sub-processes and connecting sub-models with each other.

The arsenic concentration (μg/L) of groundwater in the farming villages of southern Hanoi city, Vietnam was a high of 150 at maximum with an average of 40. The arsenic in groundwater was found to occur by the reductive release of arsenic from sediments to groundwater. Nitrogen fertilizer produced ammonium-N in groundwater. Where the arsenic concentration was high, the ammonium-N concentration was high and oxidation-reduction potential was low in groundwater, thus the contribution of nitrogen fertilizer to the groundwater arsenic contamination was recognized. Contribution of phosphate fertilizer to the groundwater arsenic contamination was identified to be small.

本研究は、種々の環境要因により変化する魚類の生息場選好性を表現可能な数理モデルを開発することを目的とする。その際、ハイブリッド型人工知能技術を援用し、メダカの生態学的な特徴をモデルに反映した。同モデルを用いた数値解析から、物理環境(水深、流速、遮蔽、植生)に対する生息場選好性に非線形性が存在することが明らかになった。また、生息場選好性の数理モデル化におけるファジィ理論の導入の有効性が示唆された。
