English, Scientific journal, The allocation of limited processing resources at an appropriate timing should be critical for selecting incoming signals. On the other hand, perceptual organization, which relatively automatically integrates fragmentary elements into coherent objects, should also be critical to decrease the processing load. By indexing behavioral measures and event-related potentials (ERPs), this study examined the effects of temporal regularity, which makes it possible to predict the time at which stimuli occur, on task-unrelated early processing of perceptual organization. Twenty-six volunteers participated in a task to discriminate central targets that were simultaneously but infrequently presented inside a Kanizsa-type illusory figure (KF) or a control stimulus (CS) without perception of an illusory figure. Inter-stimulus intervals were fixed or varied in different blocks. Both temporal regularity and the illusory figure accelerated behavioral responses and enlarged negative ERP amplitudes at 120-160 ms and 280-320 ms post-stimulus over posterior electrode sites. However, importantly, there was no evidence indicating that temporal regularity modulates illusory-figure processing. The finding may suggest that temporal expectation operates in parallel with implicit perceptual organization, although further examinations that involve spatial attention or individual differences are required., 11381639;14038342 - Effects of irrelevant object structure on early attention deployment

Japanese, Scientific journal,Implicit and rapid conversion of letters into sounds by skilled readers might be reflected in the left lateralization of print-tuned N170 event-related potential. A recent study suggests that the leftward asymmetry of the N170 depends on the attentional selection of letters as perceptual objects (Okumura et al., 2015, Neuropsychologia). The present study tested this possibility by using an experimental paradigm of object-based attention. Stimuli were letters (words, nonwords) or symbol strings that spatially overlapped with random-dot fields. Participants were asked to discriminate the color of either the letter/symbol strings or the dots. Left-lateralized negativity for print was elicited at 200–300 ms post-stimulus only when participants attended to the strings. However, this effect occurred later than the typical N170 latency, which might reflect the time required to resolve competition between overlapping stimuli or perceptual completion of letters. The current study is the first to demonstrate that the leftward asymmetry of print-specific ERP requires selective attention to letter strings.

English, Scientific journal,Early processing of print stimuli is reflected by the left-lateralized N170 of event-related potentials (ERPs). However, most previous ERP studies have focused on letter strings, and only a few have investigated single letters in opaque alphabetic writing systems, despite the fact that they are the front-end of visual word recognition and reading development. We examined ERPs for single letters of the highly transparent Japanese Hiragana script, which demonstrated a direct correspondence between graphemes and phonemes. We presented single Hiragana letters along with control stimuli (alphanumeric symbols in Experiment 1; unfamiliar foreign letters in Experiment 2) in rapid succession. The participants were asked to judge the stimulus colors and linguistic properties of letters that were task-irrelevant. In both experiments, Hiragana letters elicited more negative enhancement than control stimuli in the left hemisphere only, which showed a different pattern from the bilateral enhancement associated with single alphabetic letters. These results suggest that the implicit sound activation of Hiragana is automatic, which extends the "phonological mapping hypothesis" on the left-lateralization of N170 onto single letters.

English, Scientific journal,Fluent reading requires the rapid integration of letters into a unified letter-string percept. Previous studies have shown that this process is related to specific enhancement of the left-lateralized event-related potential (ERP) called N170. However, our previous studies found bilateral N170, rather than left-lateralized N170, enhancement for rapidly-presented Japanese Hiragana strings that were either unattended or had wide interletter spacing (Okumura et al., 2014, 2015). To explore the possibility that bilateral N170 reflects the processing of separate letters, the present study examined lateralized ERP attention effects for widely-spaced Hiragana words, nonwords, and alphanumeric symbol strings. Twelve participants were required to attend to the left or right end of strings, and to respond to a target letter/symbol at the attended location. We found bilateral N170 enhancement for Hiragana strings (130–210 ms poststimulus), while a spatial attention effect was seen in the 160—210 ms interval regardless of Hiragana or symbol strings. These results suggest that N170 specialization involves processing of letter strings at the level of separate constituent-letters when they are widely spaced or when attention does not cover letter strings.

English, Symposium, Attention-spreading refers to the phenomenon that when observers try to restrict attention to a particular part of a display, other parts that belong to the same object are obligatorily facilitated. Previous studies have examined effects of perceptual grouping principles such as adjacency and similarity on this process, and found that a lateralized potential relative to an attended hemi-field at occipital-temporal electrode sites reflects an attention-spreading process. In our study, we employed the rapid presentation of bilateral stimuli paradigm to explore whether or not attention-spreading occurs in response to emotional connectedness (i.e., happy or unhappy face). The results indicated that when presented with schematic face the response pattern was somewhat different from that of physically perceptual connectedness, which suggests that there may be some specific mechanisms underlying spatial integration by face or facial expression. - Individuals with Asperger's Disorder Exhibit Difficulty in Switching Attention from a Local Level to a Global Level

Japanese, Scientific journal, It has been suggested that emotional states modulate the breadth of attentional focus. However, it remains unclear whether this effect occurs from the beginning of the sensory input stage or at later stages of processing. In the present study, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) in a spatial selective attention task to examine the breadth of spatial attention at early visual processing stages. Twelve university students participated in the experiment. After viewing negative, neutral, and positive affective pictures, participants directed their attention to the left or right visual field and performed a target detection task. The occipitotemporal P1 (80–130 ms) elicited by standard stimuli was more positive over the hemisphere contralateral to the attended visual hemifield. This contralateral preponderance effect has been assumed to reflect the attentional gain control mechanism in the visual cortices. Although affective pictures induced significant changes in subjective emotional states, they did not modulate the P1 attention effect. The result does not support the hypothesis that emotional states modulate the breadth of attentional focus at early visual processing stages. Based on this and previous findings, we discuss that the emotional influence on the breadth of attentional focus may occur at later stages of processing. - Are objects the same as groups? Japanese, Symposium, Milne et al. indicated that individuals with high-functioning autism had a weak information system of magnocellular pathway, in comparison with typically developing individualsls. If autism has an aspect of spectrum, individuals with broader phenotype without diagnosis of autism may have a visual-processing characteristic similar to autism. This study examined the scores of autism-spectrum quotient (AQ) and social skills, and motion-coherence thresholds in typically developing adults. The results indicated that the scores of AQ and social skills correlated with the motion-coherence thresholds. - Attribute-invariant orientation discrimination at an early stage of processing in the human visual system

Mental rotation of visual images may involve embodied cognition. This has been suggested by the fact that adding a head to aligned cubes increases behavioral performance in mental rotation tasks, reflecting that the cubes are regarded as human body. On the other hand, performances in mental rotation tasks have been shown to vary with sex. It is not obvious whether there are sex differences in embodied cognition involved in mental rotation tasks. In the present study, we compared behavioral performances of males from those of females in a mental rotation task with cubes with or without a head. The results indicate that embodied cognition was useful for rotation operations in both males and females, whereas adding a head was advantageous to matching processes only for females., Japanese, Technical report - 瞬間的および持続的時間に関する事象関連電位による検討

This study examined sex differences in an attentional function that selects objects or perceptual groups as units, by using event-related potentials (ERPs). Twelve males and females were required to detect infrequent targets at attended locations for bilateral letters. There were conditions where the letters were surrounded by a large oval (common condition) and by a shape switched two halves divided the oval (uncommon condition). There were no statistical significant sex differences in behavioral measures. In contrast, in ERP attention effects (differences in ERPs at hemispheres contralateral and ipsilateral to attended visual fields), only females showed a more negative deflection at early P1 latency range (70-110 ms) and a more positive deflection at early N1 latency range (130-160 ms) for the uncommon versus common conditions. The results suggest that task-irrelevant object structures guide attention at early stages of processing in females., The Japanese Society for Cognitive Psychology - A study of spatial attention orienting for letters in hiragana strings.

Uno Tomoki; Okumura Yasuko; Kasai Tetsuko, Proceedings of the Japanese Society for Cognitive Psychology, 12th, 90, 2014
Numeral classifiers syntactically require subsequent nouns, and they restrict semantic categories of the nouns. However, a previous study that used event-related potential showed that integration of a nouns and a numeral classifiers involves only semantic processing when they were presented as a word pair. The present study investigated whether the same is true when nouns and numeral classifiers are presented in sentences. As a result, a noun that does not correspond to precedent numeral classifier elicited not only N400 that reflects semantic integration, but also P600, which reflects structural processing. This suggests that integration of numeral classifiers and nouns involves different processes depending on experimental condition. In addition, we found an enhanced anterior positivity for classifier violation in 160-240 ms interval, which may reflect processing specific to numeral classifiers.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 13 participants as they attended to the left or right hemifield of a visual display while fixating a central point. Bilateral stimuli were either framed by two small rounded rectangles separately (separate condition), or framed by one common rounded rectangle (common condition), or not framed (neutral condition). The effect of spatial attention was
reflected by enlarged ERPs at the contralateral electrode to the attended field than the ipsilateral. Consistent with previous findings, ERP results from posterior electrodes (PO7, PO8) showed typical P1 effects under all conditions and the attenuation of N1 effect under both the separate and common conditions relative to the neutral condition. The latter effect is considered to be associated with perceptual grouping. On the other hand, the P2 and N2 effects were more positive under the separate and common conditions,
respectively. The results suggest that grouping and individuation processes of perceptual organization can affect spatial attention at different stages of visual processing. This interpretation is consistent with the argument that perceptual organization should be achieved by multiple processes, rather than a unitary process at a single, pre-attentive stage., Japanese - 高速提示下における文字列特異的なERP反応

Visual scenes involve a number of grouping factors, which may obligatorily guide attention to task-irrelevant spatial regions within a perceptual group if the part is attended. Among grouping factors, color similarity may be more fundamental or guide attention earlier than shape similarity, because color is a surface feature and shape is a boundary feature that is extracted from surface features. The present study examined this hypothesis by using event-related potentials (ERPs). Participants were required to attend to one hemifield
during a rapid presentation of bilateral stimuli, color and shape similarities of which were orthogonally manipulated. Attention effects were defined as differences between ERPs at contralateral and ipsilateral hemispheres to attended visual fields. We found that N1
(140-180 ms post-stimulus) attention effects at occipital-parietal sites were decreased according to color and shape similarities without interactions. This suggests that color similarity is not more fundamental than shape similarity in the early group-based spatial selection., Japanese, Technical report - 空間選択的注意の刺激文脈による妨害―領域共通性に関わる注意誘導効果―

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether individuals with Asperger's disorder exhibit difficulty in switching attention from a local level to a global level. Eleven participants with Asperger's disorder and 11 age- and gender-matched healthy controls performed a switching task using Navon-type hierarchical stimuli. As a result, the both groups exhibited the benefit of level-repetition at both levels. In addition, individuals with Asperger's disorder exhibited difficulty in switching attention from a local level to a global level compared to control individuals. These findings suggested that there is a problem of inhibitory mechanism that influences the output of enhanced local visual-perceptual processing in Asperger's disorder., The Japanese Society for Cognitive Psychology, Japanese - 持続的な視覚的注意への実行機能及び動機づけの関与-事象関連電位を用いた検討-

Object-based selection may be completed by a mechanism that attention is guided over an object or a group, generated by Gestalt factors. The present study examined effects of combined grouping factors on attention-guidance processes, reflected by ERPs (event-related potentials), by an orthogonal manipulation of size and color similarities of bilateral stimuli. Attentional directions at the moment were indexed by lateralized potentials that enhanced at the hemisphere contralateral to the attended hemi-field. [Domestic Conference] - Effects of embodied cues on mental-rotation performance in children

59th Annual Meeting of Psychonomic Society, Nov. 2018, English, Poster presentation
Embodied cues have been found to facilitate “body analogy” and improve mental rotation
performance in adults. The present study examined whether embodied cues are also useful for children. Eighty-nine elementary school children (1-3 grades) participated in a pencil-and-paper task that required mental rotation to indicate solid figures were identical to standards. Imitability of whole
shapes and existence of a face at an appropriate position were manipulated, and participants were separated into three groups based on the scores in the condition without the embodied cues. The results indicated that imitability increased in the lowand middle score groups, suggesting a facilitation of holistic rotation with body analogy. Adding face also improved scores in those groups, although it worsened in the high group. This suggests a distractive effect of face involved in performing the
current task. Overall, the present results show that children can use embodied cues for body analogy., [International presentation] - Early perceptual representations of visual words are manifested differently by task demands: Evidence from ERP measures of spatial attention

Introduction
Although attention has been indicated to play important role in reading words, not much is known about how attention selects them. In our previous study (Okumura et al., SPR 2016) , spatial attention towards the left end of Japanese Hiragana words and nonwords remained focal during early sensory/perceptual processing but was indicated to spread over reversed words (i.e., words written from right to left), as indexed by the modulation of P1 spatial attention effect in event-related potentials (ERPs). While these results suggest that initial-letter position may guide attention to visual words, the study used visual feature detection that required participants to see rather than to read the stimuli. Therefore, the present study aimed to further examine the interaction between attention and visual word processing by using a phonological task that involves higher-order information of words.
Methods
ERPs were recorded from 14 native Japanese adults. Words, nonwords, and reversed words were consisted of four Hiragana letters aligned horizontally across the left and right hemifields. Participants attended to either the left (attend-left) or right end (attend-right) of the rapidly and randomly presented stimuli, and detected letters that represent a particular vowel sound (i.e., targets) when they appeared at the attended hemifield. ERPs at the left and right occipito-temporal electrodes (PO7, PO8) were quantified as peak amplitudes within designated intervals.
Results
In ERPs elicited by the standard stimuli, P1 (100-150 ms) at bilateral occipito-temporal electrodes (PO7, PO8) wasere more positive when attending to the contralateral end of the stimuli, regardless of type (all ps < .04). N1 (150-210 ms) for nonwords at the left occipito-temporal electrode was more negative in the attend-right than in the attend-left condition (p < .02), but no attention effects were indicated for words and reversed words.
Discussion
In contrast to our previous study, P1 attention effect was present for all stimulus type and both attention conditions, which may reflect increased focal attention due to higher task demand (simple visual feature vs. phonology). Moreover, attention effect was found in N1 for nonwords, but not for words and reversed words. This attention-spreading effect suggests that letter strings with lexical knowledge are represented as abstract integrated percepts at N1 level, since the spatial arrangement of constituent letters (normal vs. reversed) was not concerned. In summary, the present study suggestsed qualitatively different spatial representation of letter strings at P1 and N1 level, and the emergence of which may depends on the dimension(s) of them to be processed., [International presentation] - Effects of temporal expectation on visual integration vary with autism tendency in healthy population

INTRODUCTION: Fluent reading requires to implicitly decode the phonological information from logographic scripts. Previous studies using event-related potentials (ERPs) showed that such implicit grapheme-to-phoneme conversion was reflected by the print-specific N170, which was typically distributed over left occipito-temporal areas (Bentin et al., 1999; Maurer & McCandliss, 2007). Although early print processing may highly be automatized, recent studies have suggested that the leftward asymmetry of the N170 depends on visual attention based on observations in separate experiments (Okumura et al., 2014, 2015). The present study tested this notion, by directly manipulating visual attention for letter/symbol strings that were spatially overlapped with random-dot fields. We asked participants to attend either the strings or dots, so that the amount of attention available for letter strings were varied. METHODS: Twelve native Japanese speakers (6 females, 21-27 years) participated in this experiment. Hiragana words, nonwords and symbols strings (107 stimuli each) were spatially overlapped with the random-dot field (1° by 4.1°) and presented for 100 ms with interstimulus intervals of 300-600 ms (50 ms/step). In the attend-string condition, participants were required to detect navy letter/symbol strings (i.e., target) and to ignore navy-dot field (i.e., nontarget), while the targets and nontargets were reversed in the attend-dot condition. Each block contained 279 standard stimuli (both strings and dots were black), and 21 targets and 21 nontargets in both conditions. RESULTS: RTs were faster and Hit rates were higher in the attend-string task compared to the attend-dot task (ps<.01), and FA rates were higher in the attend-dot condition (p=.009). These behavioral results indicate that attending to strings was easier than attending to dots and that letter/symbol strings were more salient objects. In ERP results during 150-200 ms poststimulus, hiragana words induced a more negative deflection compared to the other stimuli (p=.006), which did not differ across the attention conditions (p=.26). Importantly, a left-lateralized negative enhancement for prints was observed only in the attend-string condition during 200-300 ms (p=.03). DISCUSSIONS: In the present study we observed a pattern of results similar to that in previous studies during C1/P1 and N170 latencies (e.g., Okumra et al., 2015; Proverbio & Adorni, 2009). However, interestingly, the letter-string/word effects were generally delayed, which may be due to additional time required for segregating letter strings from visual noise (i.e., dots). As the earliest effect, we found a word-specific negativity during 150-200 ms regardless of the attention conditions. Such insensitivity to attention suggests that word representations in early stages of the cortical hierarchy can be activated basically in an automatic fashion. Most importantly, attending to letters did elicit a left-lateralized negativity during 200-300 ms, which may be a correlate of the typical print-specific N170. Given that the left-lateralization of print-specific negativity reflects phonological mapping (Maurer & McCandliss, 2007), it is suggested that attentional resources are necessary for activating phonological information from prints., [International presentation] - Visualization of early stages of processing and their individual differences

Purpose. Previous behavioral studies suggest that visual words operate as perceptual units or “objects”, whereas early electrophysiological responses (e.g., N170) does not necessarily discriminate words from nonwords. The present study examined whether the activation of perceptual word representations involves attention and/or individual differences in attention, by indexing event-related potentials.
Methods. Sixteen participants were presented with hiragana (2-letter words and nonwords) or symbol strings, overlapped with horizontal lines. They detected infrequent color changes of either the strings (attend-string) or the lines (attend-line) during their rapid presentations in given blocks. After recording sessions, participants filled the symptom checklist of adult ADHD self-report scale (ASRS-v1.1).
Results. Increased behavioral performance and letter-string-specific (words and nonwords vs. symbols) left-lateralized negativities (190-220 ms post-stimulus) were observed in the attend-string against attend-line condition. More importantly, P1 (130-160 ms) was enlarged for words compared to nonwords in the attend-line condition (i.e., when strings were ignored). Furthermore, an attention effect (attend-string minus attend-line) at an earlier range (70-100 ms) for words were positively correlated with ASRS scores.
Conclusions. We found that visual cortex is organized to represent visual words, or learned combinations of letters, at very early stages of processing, the manifestations of which depend on the state of attention and attentional traits of individuals. These findings suggest a tight link between fluent reading and attention., [International presentation] - When illusory contour helps: interplays between temporal attention and visual perceptual organization.

Temporal attention may bias early perceptual processing. The case of perceptual organization with Kanizsa square was examined in this study. Packmen aligned inward or outward were randomly presented with 50 ms duration, and the inter-stimulus interval was constant 1450 ms or randomly varied (850–2050 ms, 5 steps). The task was to judge the direction (left, right) of a small central arrow, presented infrequently (1/3) with the packmen. Correct responses were faster in constant blocks in comparison to random blocks; more importantly, this effect was more prominent for the inward, rather than outward, packmen. This suggests that temporal regularity or expectation facilitated task-irrelevant figural formation and to discriminate targets within the figure. On the other hand, miss responses for the inward packmen decreased in random blocks, indicating a contribution of figural enhancement to detect events that occurred at unexpected timing. We also found event-related-potential correlates of these operations., [International presentation] - Effects of stimulus color on body analogy in mental rotation.

Mental rotation performance can improve when adding a face at the top of cube arrays or making them possible posture imitations
(body analogy). However, previous studies that showed such effects used only pink cubes (Amorim et al., 2006; Voyer &
Jansen, 2016). In this study, we tested whether body analogy is useful for mental rotation regardless of cubes’ color (pink,
blue). The task was to judge whether a pair of cube arrays was the same or not, and face addition and imitation possibility
were orthogonally manipulated. The results showed that both face and imitable postures were useful for mental-rotation
performance in the pink and blue conditions. However, the imitation-possibility effect when face was not added was greater
for pink rather than blue cubes. This suggests that stimulus color is a facilitating factor for body analogy in spatial operation., [International presentation] - 非注意文字列に特異的な初期ERPの経時的変化

[Domestic Conference] - Classical attentional paradigms of event-related potentials reveal stages of visual processing for the formation of perceptual objects in three-dimensional space
Kasai, T
Asia-Pacific Conference on Vision, 12 Jul. 2015, English, Nominated symposium
Nanyang Executive Centre, NTU, Singapore, Spatial attention typically causes amplitude modulations of sequential event-related potentials (ERPs), such as P1, N1, and P2, over occipito-temporal scalp sites within about 300 ms after onsets of visual stimuli, which may reflect gating mechanisms in the flow of visual processing. However, it remains unclear what types of visual processing are manifested by each ERP modulation. Computational views suggest that our visual system is specialized to extract objects from fragmented retinal images, which requires long-range spatial interactions in the visual cortical hierarchy. Previous research has shown that N1 enhancement for unilateral probes at attended versus unattended locations is decreased when the probes are embedded in pre-viewed large objects. This suggests that neural activations by spatial attention spread over object representations in the lateral occipital cortex. In our laboratory, we have applied another classical paradigm of spatial attention with bilateral stimulus arrays and found the following. 1) Attention-spreading for object onsets was also associated with N1. 2) The N1 attention-spreading effect occurred irrespective of types of visual grouping, such as connectedness, achromatic-color similarity, shape similarity, and amodal completion. 3) A P2 attention-spreading effect, rather than the N1 effect, was observed for unfilled line objects. These results suggest that the N1 is engaged in enhanced neural representations of figural regions against the background, while P2 is engaged in the individuation of objects with more abstract representations. Furthermore, in recent experiments with the unilateral-probe paradigm, we found a P1 attention-spreading effect for objects in front of other objects, but not for objects in the back of the surroundings. In conclusion, depth cues in three-dimensional world may enable rapid selection or formation of perceptual objects, while two-dimensional forms may require later stages of processing to resolve figure/ground ambiguities in early visual cortices., [Invited], [International presentation] - Electrophysiological Correlates of Visual Attentional Time Templates for Psychological "Instant" and "Continuance"

Background: We perceive “instantaneous” events, even though they actually have some amount of physical time. The psychological instant has previously been indicated to occur below 125 ms of duration. The present study explored neural bases of psychological instant and continuance when matching event-durations to attentional templates of duration, by recording event-related potentials (ERPs). Method: EEGs were recorded from 12 healthy participants. Stimuli were 4 geometric shapes (1 target; 3 non-targets) with durations of 83 ms (short) or 133 ms (long), which were sequentially presented with equi-probability and in random order. Inter-stimulus intervals were 900-1200 ms (7 steps). The participants were instructed to respond to the short or long targets in particular blocks. Regarding task relevancy, ERPs in response to the targets and non-targets were classified into two classes, respectively: those with relevant duration or irrelevant duration. The order of to-be-responded durations was counter-balanced across the participants. Results: For the long non-targets, stimuli with relevant duration elicited more positive ERPs than those with irrelevant duration in 330-430 ms post-stimulus at a right parieto-occipital site (PO4). On the other hand, the short targets elicited more negative ERPs when they had relevant duration in 220-340 ms at a left parieto-occipital site (PO3). Discussion: As our knowledge, these results are the first report of ERP manifestations of matching processes of attentional time templates and stimulus durations. Particularly, the ERP relevance effect for long non-targets may reflect pure duration-matching processes because the procedure minimized effects of motor preparation or decision-making processes. Interestingly, the short-duration stimuli did not cause this effect; instead, the relevancy effect was found only for targets. This indicates that the matching of shapes preceded that of duration. In conclusion, the present study shows that the matching processes in working memory are different between psychological instant and continuance.(Travel Award), [International presentation] - Multiple early processes for task-irrelevant Hiragana strings

Hyatt Regency Hotel, San Francisco, California, Extensive experience in reading develops specialized neural activities for letter string perception, which is reflected in N170 component of event-related potentials (ERPs). To examine the automaticity of print-tuned processing in Japanese Hiragana, we previously examined ERPs in response to letter and non-letter stimuli when linguistic processing was restricted by rapid stimulus presentation (100 ms duration with 300-600 ms interstimulus interval) and the task that leads attention away from stimuli themselves (discrimination of fixation color), and we observed bilateral N170 for letter strings without typical left lateralization (Okumura et al., 2014, NeuroReport). The present study examined whether the bilateral N170 was due to the difference in proportion of letter- to non-letter stimuli within experimental blocks (i.e., 2:1). ERPs were recorded from 11 native Japanese speakers under the same experimental conditions as those in Okumura et al. (2014), except that each block contained two types of equiprobable stimuli out of three (words, nonwords, and symbols). As a result, during 150-200 ms poststimulus, words and nonwords elicited left-lateralized N170 at occipito-temporal scalp sites, along with a greater negative enhancement for nonwords against words at parietal sites. The results suggest that the number of stimulus types that constitute a sequence affects the amount of attention allocated to two task-irrelevant processes: phonological processing in terms of letter strings and processing specific to individual letters in transparent language., [International presentation] - Objects unambiguously segregated from the background involves earlier spatial selection.

- Characteristics of developmental disorders revealed by analyzing noise-induced EEG dynamics

We developed an experimental paradigm to investigate the relationship between the consistency in electroencephalographic (EEG) responses to repeatedly presented visual noise and developmental disability. We conducted EEG experiments and analyzed the obtained data. We developed a dual-task paradigm to control the attentional state and arousal level. We used questionnaires to measure the traits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in healthy individuals. We explored the relationship between the degree of EEG consistency and these psychological traits. Although we need more data, we succeed in developing a novel experimental paradigm to assess the relationship between the psychological traits and noise-induced EEG dynamics.

Fragmentary sensory inputs are organized according to stimulus and knowledge factors, and forming figure region (object) from the background is fundamental for cognition. This research obtained findings regarding its basic mechanisms and individual differences as follows.
1. Multiple stages of processing regarding three aspects of perceptual organization (visual grouping by feature similarity, object based on learning such as letter, letter-string, visual word, and figure enhancement with subjective contours) were visualized by event-related potential and the stages on which attention operates were specified.
2. In the above investigations, some processes were found to vary with the extent of symptoms of autism-spectrum disorders (ASD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), and sex in healthy participants.

Developmental disorders have biological bases and are influenced from social circumstances. Their developmental courses are not typical, and children and adults with them have various cognitive and behavioral problems. In this study, several neuro-cognitive measurements were performed, and some investigations for QOL and traits of developmental disorders were carried out.
Dorsolateral functions in visual processes, executive functions and working memory are supposed as common mechanisms for resiliency and vulnerability of the disorders. Event-related potentials, eye movements, etc. were measured and analyzed. Their results contributed to develop methods for support of children with them in reading and writing and so on. Improvements in supporting methods for adolescents with them and their parents were performed by suggestions from evaluative differences between their results for their QOL and the traits.

It is known that, when attention is directed toward a particular location, attention tends to spread over a whole object/group region that includes the location. The present study examined attention-spreading for emerging objects, by using event-related brain potentials with a high temporal resolution of brain activities. According to results in several experiments, we identified three attention processes: attention-spreading for groups represented as figures against the background at around 150 ms post-stimulus, selection of parsing objects at around 250 ms, and an interaction process between top-down attention and attention-spreading at around 350 ms. We also found that these processes have systematic individual differences.
