Prescribed burning (RxB) is a land management tool used widely for reducing wildfire hazard, restoring biodiversity, and managing natural resources. However, RxB can only be carried out safely and effectively under certain seasonal or weather conditions. Under climate change, shifts in the frequency and timing of these weather conditions are expected but analyses of climate change impacts have been restricted to select few regions partly due to a paucity of RxB records at global scale. Here, we introduce GlobalRx, a dataset including 204,517 RxB records from 1979–2023, covering 16 countries and 209 terrestrial ecoregions. For each record, we add a comprehensive suite of meteorological variables that are regularly used in RxB prescriptions by fire management agencies, such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed. We also characterise the environmental setting of each RxB, such as land cover and protected area status. GlobalRx enables the bioclimatic range of conditions suitable for RxB to be defined regionally, thus unlocking new potential to study shifting opportunities for RxB planning and implementation under future climate. - Dissolved Organic Carbon in Coastal Waters: Global Patterns, Stocks and Environmental Physical Controls

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in coastal waters is integral to biogeochemical cycling, but global and regional drivers of DOC are still uncertain. In this study we explored spatial and temporal differences in DOC concentrations and stocks across the global coastal ocean, and how these relate to temperature and salinity. We estimated a global median coastal DOC stock of 3.15 Pg C (interquartile range (IQR) = 0.85 Pg C), with median DOC concentrations being 2.2 times higher than in open ocean surface waters. Globally and seasonally, salinity was the main driver of DOC with concentrations correlated negatively with salinity, without a clear relationship to temperature. DOC concentrations and stocks varied with region and season and this pattern is likely driven by riverine inputs of DOC and nutrients that stimulate coastal phytoplankton production. Temporally, high DOC concentrations occurred mainly in months with high freshwater input, with some exceptions such as in Eastern Boundary Current margins where peaks are related to primary production stimulated by nutrients upwelled from the adjacent ocean. No spatial trend between DOC and temperature was apparent, but many regions (19 out of 25) had aligned peaks of seasonal temperature and DOC, related to increased phytoplankton production and vertical stratification at high temperatures. Links of coastal DOC with salinity and temperature highlight the potential for anthropogenic impacts to alter coastal DOC concentration and composition, and thereby ecosystem status. - Spatial distributions of iron and manganese in surface waters of the Arctic's Laptev and East Siberian seas

Scientific journal, Abstract. The Arctic Laptev and East Siberian seas (LESS) have high biogeochemical activity. Nutrient inputs associated with river runoff and shelf sediment–water exchange processes are vital for supporting primary production in the LESS. Relative to macronutrients, data on dissolved iron (dFe) and manganese (dMn), which are essential micronutrients for primary producers, have historically been sparse for LESS. Some dFe and dMn are reportedly carried in the central Arctic by the Transpolar Drift, a major current that directly transports Eurasian shelf water, river water, and sea ice from the LESS continental margins. However, the supply of dFe and dMn to the surface waters of the LESS and the subsequent biogeochemical processes are not well constrained. In the summer of 2021, we investigated the following questions: what are the sources of dFe and dMn in the surface layer and which factors control their concentrations and distributions on the LESS continental margins? We demonstrated strong regional controls on dFe and dMn distributions based on distinct hydrographic regimes between the eastern side of the LESS (East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Abyssal Plain) and the western side (Makarov and Amundsen basins). Specifically, the East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Abyssal Plain were governed by Pacific-sourced water, and the Makarov and Amundsen basins were influenced by Atlantic-sourced water. Pacific-sourced water contained higher levels of dMn released from continental shelf sediments than Atlantic-sourced water. In contrast, elevated dFe signals were not observed, likely because sedimentary dFe was more rapidly removed from the water column through oxidation or scavenging than dMn was. The impact of river water discharge on the dFe distributions of Pacific- and Atlantic-sourced water was significant. A positive correlation between the fraction of meteoric water (river water and precipitation), dFe, and humic-like colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in these waters confirmed that dFe and CDOM are common freshwater sources. Terrigenous organic ligands likely stabilize Fe in the dissolved phase, which is not the case for Mn. Sea ice melting and formation were not significant sources during the observation period. We conclude that the major sources controlling the dFe and dMn distributions on the LESS continental margins are river discharge and shelf sediment input. - Tracing Sediment‐Affected Water Masses From Coastal Areas to Offshore Oceans Using In Situ Sensing of Fluorescent Organic Matter

English, Scientific journal,Abstract One of the most important breakthroughs in oceanography in the last 30 years was the discovery that iron (Fe) controls biological production as a micronutrient, and our understanding of Fe and nutrient biogeochemical dynamics in the ocean has significantly advanced. In this review, we looked back both previous and updated knowledge of the natural Fe supply processes and nutrient dynamics in the subarctic Pacific and its impact on biological production. Although atmospheric dust has been considered to be the most important source of Fe affecting biological production in the subarctic Pacific, other oceanic sources of Fe have been discovered. We propose a coherent explanation for the biological response in subarctic Pacific high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) waters that incorporates knowledge of both the atmospheric Fe supplies and the oceanic Fe supplies. This study establishes an optical inversion scheme for deriving the absorption coefficient of colored (or chromophoric, depending on the literature) dissolved organic material (CDOM) at the 440 nm wavelength, which can be applied to global water masses with near-equal efficacy. The approach uses a ratio of diffuse attenuation coefficient spectral end-members, i.e., a short- and long-wavelength pair. The global perspective is established by sampling “extremely” clear water plus a generalized extent in turbidity and optical properties that each span 3 decades of dynamic range. A unique data set was collected in oceanic, coastal, and inland waters (as shallow as 0.6 m) from the North Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, Hawaii, Japan, Puerto Rico, and the western coast of the United States. The data were partitioned using subjective categorizations to define a validation quality subset of conservative water masses (i.e., the inflow and outflow of properties constrain the range in the gradient of a constituent) plus 15 subcategories of more complex water masses that were not necessarily evolving conservatively. The dependence on optical complexity was confirmed with an objective methodology based on a cluster analysis technique. The latter defined five distinct classes with validation quality data present in all classes, but which also decreased in percent composition as a function of increasing class number and optical complexity. Four algorithms based on different validation quality end-members were validated with accuracies of 1.2 %–6.2 %, wherein pairs with the largest spectral span were most accurate. Although algorithm accuracy decreased with the inclusion of more subcategories containing nonconservative water masses, changes to the algorithm fit were small when a preponderance of subcategories were included. The high accuracy for all end-member algorithms was the result of data acquisition and data processing improvements, e.g., increased vertical sampling resolution to less than 1 mm (with pressure transducer precision of 0.03–0.08 mm) and a boundary constraint to mitigate wave-focusing effects, respectively. An independent evaluation with a historical database confirmed the consistency of the algorithmic approach and its application to quality assurance, e.g., to flag data outside expected ranges, identify suspect spectra, and objectively determine the in-water extrapolation interval by converging agreement for all applicable end-member algorithms. The legacy data exhibit degraded performance (as 44 % uncertainty) due to a lack of high-quality near-surface observations, especially for clear waters wherein wave-focusing effects are problematic. Japanese, Scientific journal, 化学海洋学を中心とする視点から,海洋学の過去10年程度の研究の進展を総括するとともに,今後10年程度の期間でわが国として取り組むべき研究の方向性について論じた。物質循環は依然として海洋学の主たる研究対象である。海洋における物質の定量は化学系の海洋観測の基本であるが,センサーを搭載した各種の能動型のプラットフォームにより海洋物理系の観測並みに高い時空間解像度を目指す方向が大きな柱になりつつある。一方で,このような高密度観測を補完するプロセス研究の重要性も指摘された。この両者の相互連携の仲立ちとしてモデルの役割が位置づけられ,また両者の連携による研究進展における新技術の導入および技術開発へのフィードバックの必要性が議論された。物質動態の可視化に不可欠なセンサーおよびプラットフォームの現状と展望,プロセス研究の対象となる未解明部分の例示,両者を統合した今後の物質循環研究のあり方とモデル海域の順で,研究基盤との関わりも含めて展望した。Progress in oceanographic research in the past decade is reviewed and future direction in the Japanese oceanographic research in the next decade is discussed, mainly from the chemical oceanographic perspective. While biogeochemical cycle (or material cycle) remains to be a major theme in oceanography, innovative chemical sensors on various maneuverable platforms will be able to depict dynamics of chemical constituents with very fine resolution, equivalent of those utilized in physical oceanography; a high-definition or "high-vision" image of material cycle will be available to researchers in near future. On the other hand, process studies that unveil the mechanisms behind such dynamics should be implemented concurrently. Numerical modeling may effectively connect these two approaches, and interactions with technological innovations will facilitate progress of research. Current status and expectations of sensor/platform development, possible targets of the process studies, integration of the two research approaches, and some target oceanic regions for the integrated study are discussed, with respect to necessary infrastructures of research. - Photobleaching as a factor controlling spectral characteristics of chromophoric dissolved organic matter in open ocean

Stable isotopic composition of water can be used as tracer and powerful tool for investigation of water cycle (i.e. source of water vapor, process of precipitation, resource of river water and ground water and route of flow). We are planning to make Hokkaido water isotope map that contributes for better understanding of water cycle. We observed stable isotopes of precipitation, river water and ground water at Sapporo, Tomakomai, Teshio and Memuro in Hokkaido to know the temporal variations which are essential to complete Hokkaido water isotope map. In Tomakomai, we also observed isotope ratios of soil water to investigate the mechanism to form run off water to a stream in a small catchment. 北極圏における土壌から河川への溶存有機物流出メカニズムの現状およびその変動に関する知見は極めて限られている。本研究では東シベリアに位置し、比較的流域面積の小さなインディギルカ川における溶存有機物動態の現状の把握およびその将来の変動予測を行う事を目的に、まず始めに、インディギルカ川下流域の溶存有機物濃度・組成の分布パターンを評価した。試料採取は2010年7月にインディギルカ川下流域にて行い、溶存有機炭素(DOC)濃度、紫外可視吸収スペクトルおよび3次元励起蛍光スペクトルの測定を行った。その結果、湿地起源の溶存有機物は他起源のものに比べ、腐植様物質の組成は大きく変わらないものの、タンパク質様蛍光物質の存在割合が大きい事が示唆された。 - Dissolved Organic Matter Characteristics Across a Subtropical Wetland's Landscape: Application of Optical Properties in the Assessment of Environmental Dynamics

English, Scientific journal, Vertical profiles of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) were determined by absorption coefficient and fluorescence intensity in surface waters (〜300m) at 4 stations of the western North Pacific. Vertical characteristics of CDOM were similar irrespective of differences in oceanic regions, on the one hand, i.e., levels were lower and higher in and below the temporal mixed layer, respectively. CDOM levels, on the other hand, were higher in the subarctic than in the subtropical region throughout the water columns. The ratios of fluorescence intensity to absorption coefficient increased with depth, while, the ratios were within a relatively narrow range in water layers at 4 stations, i.e., the temporal mixed layer (4.11±0.53), beneath the temporal mixed layer to 200m (6.06±1.73) and below (8.33±0.94), irrespective of differences of oceanic regions, indicating that the photochemical characteristics of CDOM in the respective water layers were similar irrespective of differences in oceanic regions. Such distributional characteristics suggested that an integrated effect of the in situ production, and photo- and bio-reactivity of CDOM in the upper water columns might give rise to a different quantity but a similar quality of CDOM among the various oceanic regimes. - In situ production of chromophoric dissolved organic matter in coastal environments

Japanese, Scientific journal, The concentration of dissolved oxygen in a culture solution is one of the most important environmental factors affecting the growth of the tops and roots of plants under hydroponic culture. In particular, the roots of tomatos readily absorb oxygen in the solution, and are thus sensitive to the concentration of dissolved oxygen. Thus, the effects of dissolved oxygen concentration on the morphology and growth of roots, water uptake rate and nutrient uptake were investigated. In hydroponic culture, the supply of dissolved oxygen is essential. Previously, we reported that supersaturation of dissolved oxygen in culture solution promoted the uptake of phosphate. In the present study, we found that supersaturation of dissolved oxygen in culture solution low in nitrogen and phosphate led to an increase in plant height, fresh weight of stems and leaves and root weight. It also increased the phosphorus concentration in the sap, stems, leaves and fruits of tomato plants.

2010年4月および6月の親潮域において,植物プランクトンの群集組成と光合成特性と共に,透明細胞外重合体粒子(TEP)分布の特徴を調査した.4月は珪藻ブルームが発生し,表層(5m深)における植物プランクトンの光合成活性が相対的に高かったのに対し,6月は珪藻ブルームが終焉し,光合成活性も低かった.4月における表層のTEP濃度は,6月と比較して,2-3倍高かった.観測期間中,表層のTEP濃度とSi(OH)<sub>4</sub>/NO<sub>3</sub>比の間に高い相関(r = 0.94, p < 0.01, n = 6)がみられたことから,珪藻類の栄養塩取り込み活性がTEP生産を支配していたことが示唆された., GEOCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN - Studies on characteristics and dynamics of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the ocean

本稿では筆者がこれまでに行ってきた蛍光光度法及び吸光光度法を用いて得られた発色団含有溶存有機物(Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter,CDOM)に関する研究成果を紹介する。発色団含有溶存有機物は,分光学的特徴によりタンパク質様(proteinlike)蛍光などの生体構成成分由来および腐植様(humic-like)発色団含有有機物に区別する事ができる。タンパク質様蛍光は溶存有機物中に実際に存在する芳香族アミノ酸に由来する事を明らかにした。更に,タンパク質様蛍光特性とアミノ酸濃度・組成から,分子量5000以上の高分子画分におけるアミノ酸含有溶存有機物は,表層では長鎖ペプチド,深層では短鎖ペプチドと深度によって主要な化学形がそれぞれ異なることを示唆した。腐植様発色団含有有機物に関しては,それが有機物の分解過程で生成する事を観測的・実験的に示した。また,海洋自生性腐植様発色団含有有機物は少なくとも900年程度の時間スケールで生物学的難分解性である事を示した。This article summarizes the results of my study on the characterization and dynamics of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the ocean based on both observational and experimental approaches. CDOM can be separated into bio-components (e.g., proteinlike fluorophores) and humic-like substances. In regards to the bio-components in CDOM, protein-like fluorophores were first suggested to derive from aromatic amino acids in DOM. Furthermore, using fluorescence properties and amino acid composition, chemical forms of amino acid-containing DOM in high molecular weight fractions were identified as long-chain peptides in surface waters and relatively small peptides in deep waters, respectively. In regards to the humic-like substances in CDOM, the spatial distribution of both quantitative and qualitative parameters of marine humic-like CDOM as well as apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) indicated that marine humic-like CDOM is produced as organic matter is biologically oxidized, and that this material is bio-refractory on centennial to millennium time scales., 日本海洋学会, Japanese - In situ production of fluorescent dissolved organic matter in the ocean interior

海洋によるCO2吸収速度を正しく見積もり、その将来変動を予測するには、難分解な非生物態有機炭素プールの挙動を知る必要がある。本研究では、海洋微生物が生成する超難分解な腐植様蛍光性溶存有機物(FDOM)を対象とする。FDOMの蛍光強度を炭素濃度に換算可能な式を世界で初めて開発する。広域観測および数値モデルと組み合わせることで、全海洋のFDOM生成フラックスを定量化し、温暖化に伴うその変動を予測する。

秋季の南部オホーツク海上で学術研究船新青丸により大気・表層海水試料を採取し、前年度までに同海域で採取済みの試料と併せ、化学組成分析を行った。その結果、微小エアロゾル質量に対し有機物が約50%を占め支配的であり、水溶性成分の割合が大きいことが明らかになった。さらに有機物の安定炭素同位体比の測定から、観測されたエアロゾルのうち、海氷後退後の春季の植物プランクトンブルーム期で71%、ブルーム衰退期で64% が海洋起源であると推定された。エアロゾル中の水溶性有機炭素(WSOC)と分子トレーサー濃度との相関関係から、観測された海洋由来のWSOCの大部分は、海水飛沫による一次生成ではなく、α-ピネンや硫化ジメチルの酸化生成物に関連する前駆物質からの二次生成の寄与が大きいことが示唆された。さらにブルーム期の水溶性有機エアロゾル中のC:N平均比はブルーム衰退期の平均比より有意に低く、海洋表層の微生物活動に関連した有機態窒素エアロゾル生成の影響が大きいことが示唆された。実際、表層海水においてブルーム期の溶存態有機炭素(DOC):溶存態有機窒素(DON)の平均比(12.8)もブルーム衰退期の平均比(14.7)より有意に低く、ブルーム期のDOCとDONはオホーツク海で研究期間に優占的な珪藻類であるFragilariopsis cylindrusのようなアイスアルジーに関係していることが示唆された。これらの結果から、領域的な海洋表層から大気に放出生成される有機物の領域的な気候影響を評価する上で、植物プランクトンブルーム期のアイスアルジーに由来する有機物のエアロゾル二次生成の重要性が明らかになった。

バイオマスや化石燃料の燃焼などで生じる熱成有機物の大部分は、生物学的反応性に乏しい超難分解性成分であり、地球表層炭素循環から二酸化炭素を隔離する役割を有する。しかし、熱成有機物の末路に関する知見は乏しく、熱成有機物は炭素循環の収支に考慮されていない。これまでの研究により、海洋の溶存有機物画分中に熱成有機物が普遍的に存在すること、その溶存熱成有機物は沈降粒子に吸着し海底へと除去されることが示された。また、溶存熱成有機物の海底への除去フラックスから、海洋には溶存熱成有機物の未知の供給源 (ミッシングソース) が存在することが示された。本研究では、海洋に存在する溶存熱成有機物のミッシングソースとして深海熱水噴出孔および大気沈着に着目し、これらが海洋の溶存熱成有機物の分布やそのプールの動態に与える影響を定量的に解明することを目指す。
深海熱水噴出孔に関しては、北太平洋および南太平洋の東太平洋海膨付近をカバーする海域における溶存熱成有機物の東西および南北断面分布を明らかにし、それらと溶存酸素濃度やヘリウム同位体比の断面分布を比較した。その結果、東太平洋海膨の熱水活動に由来する溶存熱成有機物の濃度を定量化することに成功し、深海熱水由来の溶存熱成有機物の全球フラックスを見積もることができた。また、2022年12月に明神海丘の熱水域において溶存および粒子状の熱成有機物の試料を採取することに成功した。
大気沈着に関しては、北海道大学大学院地球環境科学研究院の屋上にて、2023年8月から大気エアロゾル試料の採取を開始した。予備的な実験および解析を行った結果、大気エアロゾル中の溶存熱成有機物は黒色炭素濃度および水溶性有機炭素濃度と関係することが明らかとなった。

高緯度海域に分布する海氷は、地球規模の気候変動を制御する要因として大きな役割を担っている。従来、海氷は、物質循環の観点において大気と海洋間の「障壁」として認識されてきた。しかし、実際、海氷表面では、結氷による濃縮効果によって溶存物質が高濃度化し、大気に対して放出源になることが予想される。ただ、極域の厳しい環境での観測の難しさにより、海氷表面での「低温化学」に関する反応機構の解明に至っていない。本研究では、自然界で起こる結氷現象を室内でのチャンバー実験で再現し、有機臭素ガス、特にブロモホルムに関して、海氷表面での化学反応機構・大気への放出過程を明らかにすることが目的である。本課題は、極域大気中オゾン濃度の急激な減少を招く有機臭素ガスの発生源が特定されていないことから設定した。本研究で提唱する海氷表面でのブロモホルム生成は、有機臭素ガスの大気への新たな発生源の提案となり、長年謎とされてきた大気中オゾン消失現象の原因解明に一石を投じることとなる。しかし、これまでの応募者らによる観測事実と低温環境での化学反応の新たな知見により、反応仮説を提唱するに至ったが、反応機構は検証されていない。そこで本年度は、チャンバー実験を実施し、本研究の解明に向けてのデータの採取を行った。具体的には、購入したチャンバーを利用した化学反応実験、また、室内での結氷および積雪を再現し、ブロモホルム生成に関する室内実験を実施した。また、これまでの観測データの解析を実施した。これらの解析を実施することにより、当初の目的に向けて順調に研究が進んでいる状況にある。

初年度(平成31年度)に黒潮続流域から親潮・沿岸親潮海域で実施した有色溶存有機物(CDOM)や蛍光溶存有機物(FDOM)の観測結果では、仙台湾沖の外洋域において沿岸水の影響が見られた。その起源や三陸沖のCDOMへの影響について調べるための観測を計画していたが、コロナ感染拡大により令和3年度も6月の北大「おしょろ丸」の観測が中止となった。そこで、時期は異なるが、7月末から8月下旬に水産資源研究所 「若鷹丸」に乗船し、仙台湾内においてCTDによる水温・塩分、現場型蛍光センサーによるFDOMの測定を行った。また、海面から底層の海水を採取し、CDOM光吸収係数、植物プランクトンの光吸収係数、栄養塩類等の分析を実施した。これらのデータを用い、仙台湾内の沿岸から沖合にかけてのCDOMおよびFDOMの分布を調べた。また、水塊分類アルゴリズムを再構築し、衛星データを適用した。
表層のCDOM・FDOM値は概して低く、陸に近い表層および底層において高い値が観測された。水温・塩分と比較すると、表層の塩分は低く高いCDOM・FDOM値は河川水の影響と考えられた。一方、底層の塩分は高いため、海底堆積物からの溶出の影響と示唆された。今後、衛星データと比較し、これらの高いCDOMが外洋へ輸送されていたかどうかを確認する。衛星による水塊分類アルゴリズムは、現場データに対して約70%の精度で水塊を判別できたが、衛星データを入力すると30%まで低下した。衛星データの調整を行うことで60%まで向上させることが可能となり、栄養塩や基礎生産との関係を解析できる段階となった。
以上の結果は水塊の混合過程を3次元的に明らかにするツールとなり、同時に広範囲の水塊分布の解明につながる。また、栄養塩データと水塊の関係を解析し、基礎生産データと比較することで、高基礎生産力を生み出す水塊の消長と海氷等の関係を推察可能となる。

In this study, we investigate possibilities that lightning to ocean surface induces geochemical cycles. Pulse discharge was used to simulate natural lightning. Seawater, river water and pure water were discharged under pure air or argon atmosphere. We found significant production of nitrogen oxides such as nitrate, nitrite and nitrous oxide. Both production and consumption were occurred for dissolved organic matters.

We carried out research cruises covering over the Pacific Ocean and examined the distribution of biogenic elements by means of newly developed high sensitivity methods which is one of the main factors controlling quantity and function of ecosystem services. We obtained maps of nutrients, dissolved organic phosphate, dissolved humic substances, pH, alkalinity, and other forms of biogenic elements. New ocean provinces of the Pacific Ocean are proposed based on the geography of biogenic elements. For parameters of carbonate system, we carried out database analysis and showed the interannual variability with proceeding of global warming and ocean acidification. Using the obtained data of biogenic elements and physical oceanographic parameters, we also make it possible to estimate various parameters on marine ecosystem services such as distribution of fisheries target species by means of generalized additive model.

Field observations were carried out on water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles in taiga and taiga-tundra boundary in eastern Siberia. Soil moisture water equivalent at taiga forest study site was reconstructed for pas 100 years from tree-ring 13C of larch. Our observational results showed that the wet condition in 2006-2007 was extreme event, and runoff from the region to Lena river was generated for a whole year during this period. N dynamics was also observed in larch forest. Soil inorganic N pool size showed large seasonality depending on the soil temperature.
