  • Effects of intra-specific variation on the coexistence of sessile organisms evaluated by long-term observation
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    01 Apr. 2018 - 31 Mar. 2021

Large within-species variation is observed in sessile organisms, such as forest trees, shrubs and intertidal barnacles. Dealing with those systems consisted of multiple species, this study examined the relationship between within-species, among-individual variations of life-history measures (in particular, size-dependent growth) and among- species coexistence. We quantified within-species variation using long-term repeated census records, applying bias-free new methods. Life-long integration of variation characterized species-level turnover rates. The fast-slow trade-off among species facilitated the equitability mechanism of coexistence.

  • Recovery of rocky intertidal community after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake elucidated by a large-scale longterm community census
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    2015 - 2017
    NODA Takashi
The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake caused large tsunami and coseismic subsidence in the Tohoku region. To assess impacts of the earthquake on rocky intertidal community and the course and status of recovery of the community by before/after comparison, I carried out the survey using the same method at the same place from 2011 to 2017. The results show that the rocky intertidal community suffered significant but only relatively minor damage from the tsunami. In contrast, coseismic subsidence may have caused the considerable changes in distribution and abundance of organisms. At 6 years after the earthquake, the community has not yet returned to its normal state; for several dominant species, zonation in 2017 was obviously different from zonation before the earthquake. This community will experience a long delay before fully recovering from the impact of the earthquake because species that have not recovered include late successional species.

  • Impact of the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake on rocky intertidal community elucidated by a large-scale longterm community census
    Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    2012 - 2015
    NODA Takashi
The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake caused large tsunami and subsidence in the Tohoku region. Before the event, I regularly carried out a rocky intertidal community census for eight years on five shores close to the epicenter of the earthquake. To assess impacts of the earthquake by before/after comparison, I carried out the survey using the same method at the same place from 2011 to 2014. The course and status of recovery of populations substantially varied among species. A barnacle drastically increased and expanded its vertical range in 2011, then decreased. Other sessile species shifted their zonations downward according to the subsidence in 2011. Some of them did not clearly change their abundances light after the earthquake but increased and moved upward, while others continuously decreased. All mobile species did not clearly change their vertical distributions light after the earthquake. Among them two species decreased from 2012 and not recover.

To provide scientific information for the conservation and management of coastal ecosystems and resources, the present study carried out an integrated approach to investigate structure and dynamics of coastal marine community and their changes in relation to global climate change such as temperature rise. We specially targeted on seagrass bed, rocky intertidal and kelp forest communities as model systems. We conducted broad-scale, long-term monitoring of these communities based on periodical census and the use of remote sensing and GIS analyses, statistical analyses on meta-community structure, genetic analyses based on molecular data, and field manipulative experiments. The results demonstrated that structures of coastal communities are affected by multiple factors that operate at different spatial scales, and that their dynamics can be unstable with ongoing climate change through modification of species interaction processes between producers and consumers.

  • Dynamic evaluation of boreal aquatic ecosystems assessed by nitrogen isotope and food web structure

    2009 - 2011
    MINAGAWA Masao; NODA Takashi
To evaluate stability of aquatic ecosystems which are disturbed by interference such as by immigrant biota or by eutrophication, we studied and evaluated here stable nitrogen isotope proxies as a likely indicator assessing the state of nitrogen cycling and food chain structure of an ecosystem. Based on field works at Ishikari river water shed where it has been concerned about large discharge of anthropogenic nitrogenous compounds, and many dam ponds distributed in Toyama prefecture as being concerned about ecological disturbance by large-mouth bass recently. The nitrogen isotope analysis has been clarified as a useful and promising indicator to evaluate environmental problems occurring in ecology and/or nutrient cycling even though based on only snapshot observations.

This study aims to examine the effects of spatial scale on structure, dynamics and diversity of biological communities using rocky intertidal communities as a model system. We established a total of 150 census plots along the Pacific coast of Japan according to nested hierarchical sampling design, and conducted census of community, experiment on succession and monitoring of environmental conditions. Major findings are summarized as follows :1.We found clear latitudinal gradients of regional species richness and species turnover among shores. However, these patterns were not reflected at a s...

Food web dynamics can be controlled by both external factors of primary productivity and environmental stress of ecosystem. However, little is know about how these two factors affect the food web dynamics in natural communities. Here I report a field factorial experiment manipulating the nutrient levels (as an external factor controlling primary productivity), and desiccation stress (as a factor of envilonmental stress), and the presence /absence of macrograzer (limpets ; their grazing is a key process in the food web) in a rocky intertidal algae-grazer food web. The results revealed that d...
