- Inter-annual fluctuation in distribution of age-0 walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus in the southeastern Pacific coast of Hokkaido

Japanese, Various studies have been conducted to elucidate the climate variability impacts on living marine resources. Larval and juvenile stages are critical periods for the recruitment of living marine resources. However, limitations of observation methods for directly investigating the environments that larvae and juveniles experienced have been obstacles to our understanding. We reviewed the previous studies on climate variability impacts on living marine resources and discussed how reconstruction of environmental histories of larvae and juveniles is important for our understanding of climate variability impacts on living marine resources. We proposed a new, integrated method to reconstruct environmental histories of larvae and juveniles using otolith oxygen stable isotope analyses and fish growth–migration models. Together with the growth estimated from otolith daily increments, it is possible to elucidate climate impacts on larval and juvenile growth through environmental histories of larvae and juveniles using their realistic migration routes. - Maturation process and reproductive biology of female Arabesque greenling Pleurogrammus azonus in the Sea of Japan, off the west coast of Hokkaido

- Vertical distribution of walleye pollock juveniles before and after the period of transition for feeding in Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan

Japanese, To understand winter distribution patterns of young walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma and its determinants, we conducted an echo integration survey on the Pacific coast of eastern Hokkaido (the Doto area) in late February of 1998. Pollock aggregations were mainly located from the shelf edge to the continental slope region (150-400 m) with temperature ranging from 2 to 4°C. In contrast, the fish echoes were not present in the continental shelf region, which was dominated by the low temperature (<2°C) and low salinity (<33.0) Coastal Oyashio Water. Walleye pollock showed diel vertical migration patterns, involving staying near the bottom during the day and rising to the mid-water area at night. Our results show the fish's (1) offshore-ward movements and (2) concentrations in deeper water in winter. These observed pollock distribution changes were probably enhanced in marine environmental dynamics, caused by intrusion of the Coastal Oyashio Water into the shelf region. It is suggested that such distribution changes affect young pollock survival and are important for determining year class strength. - Interannual fluctuations in recruitment of walleye pollock in the Oyashio region related to environmental changes

English, Scientific journal, The Japanese Pacific walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) stock is the largest stock of this species in Japanese waters. It is a key component of the Oyashio ecosystem. In southern Hokkaido waters, these fish spawn mainly during January and February near the mouth of Funka Bay (FB), and most eggs and larvae are transported into FB. During midsummer juvenile pollock migrate along the southern coast of Hokkaido to a nursery ground on the continental shelf off eastern Hokkaido (Doto area). However, some eggs and larvae are transported southward to the Tohoku region (TR). Transport depends largely on the Oyashio, which generally flows southward along the eastern coasts of Hokkaido and Tohoku. Thus, this stock has two different recruitment routes: FB–Doto and FB–TR. In the 1980s, when the southward flow of the Oyashio was strong, the number of age-2 pollock estimated from a virtual population analysis (VPA) indicated that recruitment to the entire stock remained at a medium level. In the 1990s, when the Oyashio weakened, strong year-classes occurred in 1991, 1994, and 1995, but not in the latter half of the 1990s. Juvenile catches in the TR by commercial fisheries, which can be taken as indices of recruitment level via FB-TR, were high during the 1980s and decreased in the 1990s. Although there was no significant difference in the average number of recruits between the 1980s and the 1990s as estimated from a VPA, the recruitment patterns differed between the two decades. Here, we propose that recruitment routes of this stock shifted in response to environmental changes.

Japanese, The Japan Pacific population of walleye pollock, which is distributed widely along the Pacific coast of northern Japan, is one of the most important fishery resources in Japanese waters. Spawning of the population occurs in winter adjacent to the mouth of Funka Bay. Pre-settlement juveniles have been found to be migrated from the Funka Bay area to the southeastern coast of Hokkaido (Doto area) via the coast of Hidaka Bay by their first autumn. Thus the Doto area, where they settle and remain for several years, is an important nursery ground for juvenile pollock; they spend 3-5 years while they are immature in the Doto area. By the age of 3 to 5, pollock mature and migrate back to the Funka Bay spawning ground. After spawning, the adults return to the Doto area to recover taking advantage of the high prey abundance. Such a life history capitalizes on the features of the two adjacent areas, the mouth of Funka Bay and the Doto area, as a spawning ground and a feeding ground, respectively.

- Diets of walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma in the Doto area, northern Japan: ontogenetic and seasonal variations

Japanese, Landlocked sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) were transferred into seawater (SW) directly or after pre-acclimation to 50% seawater (50% SW) . The time course changes of their serum sodium level and weight increase were measured. Two similar experiments were conducted in November 1991 (0+year) and April 1992 (1+year), when osmoregulatory ability of the fish was low and high, respectively. In November 1991, serum sodium level of the fish pre-acclimated to 50% SW for 4 months was lower compared with that of directly transferred fish. Almost all of the directly transferred fish stopped growing in SW, whereas some of the pre-acclimated fish increased their weight. In April 1992, even in directly transferred fish, serum sodium level was lower compared with that of pre-acclimated fish in November. Pre-acclimation to 50% SW for 2 weeks did not enhance osmoregulatory ability further in spring. All individuals of both group increased their weight in SW. These data suggest that growth of landlocked sockeye salmon in SW may closely relate to the osmoregulatory ability of the fish at the time of transfer to SW.

We review published/unpublished information on the early life stage of walleye pollock along the Pacific coast of Hokkaido. Evidence of the recruitment fluctuations was suggested by cohort analysis, and the 1995 year class was recognized as the strongest year class in the last two decades. The highest distribution of eggs was observed in the vicinity of Funka Bay, the southwestern part of Hokkaido. Egg transport and match/mismatch processes are pointed out as possible causes of recruitment fluctuations during the larval stages. In August 2000, we observed a high-density juvenile aggregation in the eastern Pacific Hokkaido. The estimated hatch dates of juveniles ranged between early-January and mid-March, suggesting they originated from Funka Bay. We suggest that the juveniles migrate from Funka Bay to the eastern Pacific Hokkaido during their first summer and that they use this area as for a nursery ground. Larval transport, migration mechanism and environmental conditions in the nursery area may also be important in establishing year-dass strength., The Japanese Society of Fisheries Science, English - 根室海峡のコマイ資源

Focusing on three fish species utilizing the high tidal mixing regions, we conducted growth analysis by otolith daily increments, environmental history analysis fish experienced by otolith stable oxygen isotope ratio, and fish response analysis to environments by fish growth-migration models. As a result, it was shown that the initial growth of chub mackerel becomes better when the spawning ground is formed close to the Kuroshio axis, and growth positive spiral, in which higher initial growing fishes obtain higher prey density by entering to the cooler region, is acting. It was firstly revealed that jack mackerel shift the habitat to the near-bottom layer over four-weeks, and the water temperature effects on growth is limited indicating stronger influence of food production. By numerical experiments on walleye pollock, it was revealed that tidal mixing increases nutrients and iron supply from the marginal seas, prey production and hence successful ratio of pollock bottom shift.
