オフィオライトの代表的存在でありながら、従来までその起源に対する議論の続いているオマーン・オフィオライト(北部)のマントル〜地殻部分の熱水作用と関連のある脈岩類についての研究を行い、以下の結果を得た。
1.マントル部分、特にかつてのマントル・ダイピルの中心部付近に、純粋なディオプサイドに近い単斜輝石を主とする特徴的な岩脈(ディオプシダイト)が産する。An>99の斜長石やFo>95のかんらん石が伴われる。これらの鉱物は「スカルン的」であり、熱水の関与を示唆する。共存する蛇紋石はアンティゴライトである。また,周囲のハルツバーガイトはアンティゴライト化が著しく,希にアンソフィライトが見いだされ,変成温度が600℃強と推定される。この岩石の成因として,シリケート成分に富む熱水からの晶出が考えられる。原岩としてのガブロ質岩脈の存在は,現在までのところ必要がない。これは海嶺下のマントル部分への熱水の到達を示唆しており、その起源は大変重要である。
2.中部地殻の等方ガブロ中に顕著なクロライト岩を発見し,詳細な岩石学的/地球化学的研究を行った。このクロライト岩はガブロおよびドレライト脈を置換しており,ほぼクロライトよりなり,少量のルチルを含む。ガブロに比較して,著しくFeに富み,Siに乏しい。また,著しいEuの負の異常を示す。このEuの負の異常は,海洋底の熱水で観察されるEuの正の異常と相補的であり,興味深い。クロライト岩はガブロとほぼ同等のREE含有量を有するものの,クロライトそのものはREEに極めて乏しい。REEはルチルおよびクロライト粒間の細粒集合体(鉱物としては未同定)に含まれていることが判明した。これらより,海洋底地殻の熱水変質時の元素移動のメカニズムを考察中である。
