The yield resistance of a high strength bolted frictional joint is evaluated based on the designed net cross‐section area. The Japanese Specifications for Highway Bridges specifies a designed net cross‐section area could be increased by a factor of 1.1 in the verification of the net cross‐section yield resistance at Serviceability Limit State in high strength bolted frictional joint where the bolts are placed in grid arrangement. In the design of a staggered arranged high strength bolted frictional joint, the width of strip to be deducted from the transverse section on account of a staggered arrangement w is used. And the width of strip w is negative when p2/(4g) is larger than d0. However, the designed net cross‐section area of a staggered arranged high strength bolted frictional joint is unclear. In this study, FE analysis of staggered arranged high strength bolted frictional joint was carried out by varying the number of bolts in the top column k and the gauge distance transverse to the loading g as parameters. The results indicated that in some cases, the ratio of the net cross‐section yield resistance predicted by FE analysis to the designed net cross‐section yield resistance may be less than 1.1, but a factor of 1.1 can be applied with a suitable arrangement. - A study on residual bolt tension and slip strength of the high-strength bolted friction joints after 27 years of service

International conference proceedings, <p>The present study focuses on the major slip behavior of high-strength frictional bolted connections in an I-girder. Bolted girder connections resist the applied bending moment through the cooperation of flange and web resistances. Flange and web splices are individually designed following practical design codes, such as Eurocode 3 and the Japanese Specifications for Highway Bridges. In the present study, FEA of various cross-sectional dimensions of the web splice in girder bolted connections, having various bolt arrangements of the web splice, and various number of bolts in the flange and web splices have been conducted to quantitatively evaluate the cooperative slip behavior of the girder connections. It has been found that the frictional force of the web splice was small compared to the design resistance. Moreover, as the bolt spacing of the web splice increased and the number of bolt rows of the web splice decreased, the ratio of the frictional force to the design slip resistance increased.</p> - Load transferring mechanism of long riveted joint partially replaced by high-strength bolts

International conference proceedings, <p>Rivet joints are widely applied in the connections of steel bridges prior to 1950 owing to their tightness and strength. Some rivets become loosened or corroded after repeated loading and long- term usage. Previous studies indicate that replacing riveted joints with a high-strength bolt to achieve friction may be the best approach for repairing a riveted joint. However, for a long riveted joint, which has an uneven load distribution, the removal of individual rivets may overload the other rivets. This study focuses on long riveted joints at the bottom flange of an actual riveted bridge. The load redistribution mechanism involved when the rivet is removed under a dead load is investigated by performing a finite element (FE) simulation. The FE analysis results show that when a rivet is replaced by a bolt, the rivet’s load transferring ability is affected more by rivets near the bolts, whereas more distant rivets pose almost no effects.</p> - Experimental study on the cooperative slip/bearing limit state of high-strength bolted frictional girder connection

International conference proceedings, <p>Bolted girder connections resist applied bending moment through the cooperation of flange and web resistances. To utilize the bending plastic capacity of the girder connection at the ultimate limit state, the bearing capacity of the girder connection should be defined by the cooperative resistance and the ductility of bolt hole deformation. In the present study, pure bending test of plate girders bolted connection has been conducted to evaluate quantitatively the resistance and the ductility of the connection. From obtained results, it was found that the overall slip would not occur until the bolt group in the web other than around the neutral axis reaches their slip strength. In addition, overall slip strength formula with a 5% discrepancy from the experimental results has been newly proposed. As for the deformation capacity, it was found that the flange bolt hole deformation was about 10% of the bolt diameter at the design full plastic moment.</p> - Exploration of novel faying surface treatment for high-strength frictional bolted joints to enhance its after-slip performance

International conference proceedings, <p>Welded joints is adopted rather than bolted joints for megastructure’s connections because the former can carry large force. However, the former has several problems, such as quality control of welding in situ, which the latter can solve. By contrast, as the load transfer ratio of each bolt becomes uneven proportionally to the number of bolts, local slip around extreme bolts occurs before the whole slip. Extreme bolts to which a large shear force is applied will break before other bolts. For utilizing the strength of all bolts, the problem is solved by improving shear deformation capacity in faying surface with novel surface treatment. Here, the treatment concepts were explored, and the coating’s effectiveness was evaluated through friction tests. The deformation capacity can be twice or more than that of conventional treatment, and the slip coefficient doesn’t depend on contact pressure. These features have the advantage to give stable slip behaviour.</p> - Bearing Limit State of High-Strength Frictional Bolted Joints Consisted of Several Bolts Based on Bolt Hole Deformation
