    Japanese aesthetics have impacted global arts and aesthetics through traditional, modern, and post-modern aesthetic categories (mononoaware, iki, or moe, haikyo respectively) and qualities (vagueness, spontaneity). This chapter traces accomplishments of Japanese aesthetics, analyzes their complexities, highlights some challenges to philosophy of art, and introduces some emerging aesthetics and new analyses of traditional aesthetics, including Ainu. Japanese aesthetics offer valuable opportunities for developing abilities that extend, modify, and deepen our range of emotional, sensory, and artistic feeling (joy, awareness of seasonal change, the beauty of folk arts) commonly recognized as the purview of aesthetics. They also enhance a range of cognitive skills, such as comprehending the ineffable, and strengthen social and personal skills such as expressing individuality, experiencing community, encountering the other and the land, and/or surviving atomic destruction. Sections address the unparalleled millennia-old importance of women’s gaze/voices and the interactions of aesthetics with fascism and with war.

  • 多文化共生に向けた「アイヌ」のモノづくりを巡る挑戦的研究

    今年度は、「アイヌ」という主題を巡って多様なアクターが交錯するモノづくりについて、下記の研究を実施した。
    （１）「アイヌ」に関連する商品について、昭和期の北海道観光ブーム時に作られたお土産品に関するデータの収集・整理をおこなった。なかでも制作地・販売地が限定できるものに着目した（２）「アイヌ」に関連する商品について、ここ数年に生まれた「アイヌ」に関連する商品について情報収集をおこなった。なかでもアイヌ工芸と異分野とのコラボレーションによって制作されたものに着目した。調査は、インターネット等による情報収集にとどまらず、札幌市内の百貨店、博物館ミュージアムショップなどの現場に足を運び、その状況を把握した。（３）昭和期の北海道観光ブームを経験した作家への聞き取り調査をおこなった。ただし、新型コロナウイルスの蔓延下であったため、札幌近郊の既に親交のある作家へのインタビューを中心におこなった。当時出版された旅行ガイドブックなどの文献調査も合わせて実施した。（４）近年のコラボレーション等によって新たに生まれた作品や商品に関わった作り手やオーガナイザー等への聞き取りをおこなった。二風谷アイヌクラフトプロジェクトの会議、札幌アイヌプロダクツの発表会等に参加し、一部の関係者へ聞き取りをおこなった。調査にはテレビ会議システム（ズーム）も用いた。また、本研究の視点と関わるアイヌ工芸品へのまなざしと収集のあり方について、海外アイヌ関係資料からも考察をおこなった。
    今年度の調査から、この数年で「アイヌ」に関わる商品開発が急激に増加しており、その中心がアイヌ工芸と異分野とのコラボレーションによるものであることを把握した。また、その背景として、市町村によるアイヌ施策推進法の活用といった政治的環境、コラボレーションをオーガナイズするアクターが大きな影響を与えていることを把握した。

  • 国公立博物館における先住民族の権利実現の可能性と課題－アイヌとマオリの比較研究

    2020年10月16日に北海道博物館にて調査を行った。翌17日には午前中に北海道立アイヌ総合センターで調査を実施し、午後にハイブリッドで研究会を開催して、2人の研究協力者（中村尚弘、山崎幸治）にご報告いただいた。中村は「特別展におけるアイヌ文化表象の変遷」を、山崎は「国立アイヌ民族博物館の開館準備の中での経験」についてお話くださった。同月18日に国立アイヌ民族博物館に小坂田、深山氏、山崎氏で訪問し、研究協力者の立石信一氏に案内していただいた。国立アイヌ民族博物館訪問の感想については、同月24日に別科研の研究会で小坂田が報告を行っている。
    2020年11月15日には小坂田が大阪の国立民族博物館にてアイヌ展示の調査を行った。2021年1月4日には、オンラインでコア・メンバー（小坂田、深山、中村）の打ち合わせとミニ研究会を実施し、小坂田は「国立アイヌ民族博物館までの道のり」と題する報告を、深山は「東京国立博物館におけるアイヌ民族に関する展示」と題する報告を行った。2021年3月24日には、コア・メンバーでの打ち合わせとミニ研究会を実施し、小坂田は「世界の先住民族博物館」と題する報告を実施した。
    2020年度は、コロナ禍でニュージーランドの博物館に行けなかったため、日本のアイヌに関する博物館の調査・検討をおこなうにとどまった。現在は、調査結果を分析しているが、その際、差別の歴史展示と博物館の在り方、博物館展示へのアイヌの参加に焦点をあてて検討を行っている。

  • Cross-boundary Studies of Rethinking of Global Studies from the Indigenous people's points of view

    The social trends of the demand for the return of burial remains, the demand for improved cultural presentation in museums, and the demand for language and cultural education, all of which are being addressed by indigenous peoples around the world, were investigated. The results revealed the reality that the world's indigenous movements, while using common communication tools such as ICT, globalization has never caused homogenization of the world, but rather has transmitted to the entire world historical reflections on respect for cultural diversity and uniqueness. It is clear that nation-states have a responsibility to support the global networking of indigenous peoples in their territories and to work toward cooperation and reconciliation between indigenous peoples and nations. It is necessary to incorporate indigenous studies into public education to ensure linguistic and cultural diversity.

  • A study on "Ainu wooden tray"in cooperation with people of source communities

    This research project examined “Ainu wooden tray” in cooperation with people of source communities (producers and users of materials and their descendants). We researched old Ainu wooden tray which did not have background data in museums. While conducting research about Ainu wooden tray, we found maker’s personal style. Furthermore, we examined design and carved patterns and its regionality. The research project made opportunities of “reconnection” of the source community with museum collections. Some old Ainu wooden trays returned in local historical context. In addition, we considered the role of ethnographic database and collaboration research with indigenous peoples.

    The project pursued an indigenous people policy which fits in with the unique realities of the Ainu and Japan. It became clear that it's appropriate to revive ethnic culture of Ainu by placing the Ainu’s right to choose one’s ethnic identity on the article 13 of the Japanese Constitution and by imposing the obligation to realize the right on the government. Cultural revival is necessary to advance national understanding of the Ainu people and of a comprehensive policy to improve the social status of the Ainu. The cultural rehabilitation also is effective to increase young Ainu who tackle various issues for the improvement of their social status.

    This subject was planned to reconstruct the history of the ethnic relation between the Ainu and the Wajin in the perspective of cultural anthropology. It focused on the interaction between the self-/ others-understanding among the Ainu and that among the Wajin in modern Japan from three viewpoints: the social movements and the verbal practices by the Ainu, the studies concerning the Ainu culture, and the representations on the media. We investigated the historical development of them critically and prepared the basic information needed to connect such problematique with practical approaches to the modernity surrounding the Ainu

    The Ainu are an indigenous people of Japan and European scientists had been interested in their features and culture because of the similarity of physical features between Caucasians and the Ainu. Many scientists visited and collected Ainu materials from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Also huge numbers of documents like field notes, diaries and correspondences were left in European and American museums and archives. We pay attention to what they wrote on the documents and analyze the contents to describe what had been happened between researchers and the Ainu at that time from practical viewpoints.

  • A study of contemporary importance of old pictures in university museum

    We digitalize and made a database of 25,000 old pictures taken by professors worked for university museum. In this project,(1) we restored the specimen information by using the old pictures,(2) we were sure that the pictures are base information for Ainu Culture research,(3) we restored the record of local cultural property. The most valuable result of this project is catalogue of the pictures. This catalogue was sent to many libraries, research institutions, it will be utilized for various purposes

  • Study on Domestic Implementation of "UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples"in Japan.

    UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples enumerates individual and group rights necessary for the indigenous peoples in general. It also recognizes each and every indigenous peoples and countries to seek to realize the Declaration's rights according to their concrete conditions. Japanese parliament and government finally recognized the Ainu people to be the indigenous people of northern Japan in 2008. Based on intensive and interdisciplinary research, we assert that Japan's new Ainu policy should be based on the Article 13 of the Japanese Constitution stipulating respect for individuality and its purpose should be the materialization of a society where an ethnic Ainu can freely live with Ainu's identity.

  • Study on Ainu Ceremonial Crown and modern meaning

    While conducting research about Ainu ceremonial crown, I found both macro (such as regional character) and micro (such as technique of craft making) researches were necessary to clarify modern Ainu material culture. Also, in order to share research result with Ainu people, a certain kind of system needs to be established. When establishing the new system, the notion of "reproduction" seems to be important.
