Abstract A new species of the roughy fish genus Hoplostethus, subgenus Leiogaster, is described based on three specimens collected from Sumatra, Indonesia. This species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characteristics: gular region covered with ctenoid scales; pelvic‐fin spine smooth on its anterior edge; head depth subequal or smaller than its length (37.2%–38.6% standard length [SL], or 94.7%–99.2% head length [HL]); pectoral‐fin length 35.6%–37.8% SL, reaching beyond a vertical through anal‐fin origin; abdominal scutes well developed, 12–16; pectoral‐fin rays uniformly black, 17–19; gill rakers on the first arch 6–7 + 1 + 13–14 = 21; pre‐dorsal scales 24–27; and pyloric caeca 32. A detailed description is provided along with comparisons with its congeners. Additionally, diagnostic characters of the congeners and literature records of Hoplostethus rubellopterus and Hoplostethus melanopus are discussed.

A single specimen of Krusensterniella (Perciformes: Zoarcidae), collected off Tsugaru Peninsula, Aomori, Japan, was identified as Krusensterniella squamosa Chernova, 2022, characterized by three pungent spines in the dorsal fin, 47 dorsal-fin spines, at least 101 dorsal-fin rays and 103 vertebrae, and previously known only from the holotype, collected off Iwate, Japan. The new standard Japanese name “Uroko-haregaji”, referring to the scaled body, is proposed for the species. Records of Krusensterniella notabilis from Japan are unlikely to be that species, since many identification sources for Japanese fishes in correctly described K. notabilis as having a broad scaled area on the body.

A new species of rockfish, Sebastiscus vibrantus, is described on the basis of 24 specimens collected from Bali, Indonesia and Taiwan. Although closely resembling Sebastiscus tertius (Barsukov and Chen 1978) in overall body appearance, and having usually 19 pectoral-fin rays and black margined white blotches scattered on the lateral body surface, the new species has thicker unbranched pectoral-fin rays, a greater pectoral-fin base length, the third dorsal-fin soft ray usually longest, the anterior margin of the scaled suborbital area not reaching level the anterior margin of the orbit, and weakly developed nuchal spines.

The monophyly of Polynemidae was evaluated and its sister relationship with Sciaenidae discussed, based on osteological and myological characters from 24 polynemid species in eight genera, with comparisons with acanthomorph fishes from literature and 86 species in 8 orders and 63 families examined. Polynemidae was inferred as a monophyletic group, strongly supported by 19 synapomorphies, including four unique characters (unnamed bone present on cephalic sensory canal extending from supratemporal, third actinost not supporting pectoral-fin rays, section A1 comprising lateral and medial elements, and division of obliquus inferioris present between lower postcleithrum and rod-like process on coracoid) in percoids. In addition, seven pectoral girdle characters were recognized, with the girdle possessing filament-like sensory rays, an adaptation to benthic life in muddy water. The sister relationship of Polynemidae and Sciaenidae was supported by six synapomorphies, including two rather rare (a single branchiostegal ray suspended by epihyal and posterior portions of pelvic bones on both sides interdigitated) and two unique characters (metapterygoid and quadrate interdigitated medially and anterior extension of the nasal canal).

A new armored searobin, Peristedion richardsi sp. nov., is described on the basis of three specimens collected from the deep sea (485-600 m) off Java, Indonesia. This new species differs from the Indo-West Pacific congeners in having anterior edge of the 4th sensory pore of the rostral projection located anterior to the anterior edge of the premaxilla, perifacial rim prominent starting near anterior margin of lower jaw, spatulate rostral projection with very narrow interspace between both rostral projections, rostral projection width 1.33-1.73 in interspace between both rostral projections, and rostral projection with straight margin on medial side at base. It is clear that Peristedion nierstraszi Weber, 1913 is a junior synonym of Peristedion riversandersoni Alcock, 1894. In addition, a lectotype is designated for P. nierstraszi.

An examination of the ceratioid anglerfishes collected on the Indian Ocean side of Indonesia during surveys in 2004-2005 have revealed 18 species in 9 genera and 6 families, including three new species: Cryptopsaras couesii (Ceratiidae); Melanocetus johnsonii (Melanocetidae); Diceratias trilobus, Bufoceratias microcephalus sp. nov., B. thele, B. shaoi, B. cf. wedli (Diceratiidae); Himantolophus danae, H. sagamius, H. nigricornis, H. macroceratoides (Himantolophidae); Oneirodes quadrinema sp. nov., O. amaokai sp. nov., O. carlsbergi, O. cristatus, Dermatias platynogaster, Chaenophryne cf. melanorhabdus (Oneirodidae); and Linophryne parini (Linophrynidae). Of these, specimens of B. shaoi, H. macroceratoides, O. cristatus and L. parini represent the second records since the species were described. A specimen of H. nigricornis represents the third record and a specimen of Dermatias platynogaster represents the fourth record. Descriptive data and notes on the geographical distribution and morphological variation are provided for each species.

Background. The lophiid anglerfishes are with commercial importance, but rarely they are documented in Indonesian waters. During the Japanese and Indonesian collaborative surveys in 2004 and 2005, an anglerfish collection was made and it is the aim of this study to identify this collection, to document new records and to provide information further application usage such as fishery assessment from the study area. Materials and methods. Specimens were deposited in the HUMZ collection and examined by the authors. Counts, measurements, and photography were consistent with the commonly used methods. Results. Three genera and eight species in the family were collected, including Sladenia cf. zhui [sensu Ni, Wu et Li, 2012]; Lophiomus setigerus (Vahl, 1797); Lophiodes naresi (Gunther, 1880); Lophiodes bruchius Caruso, 1981; Lophiodes endoi Ho et Shao, 2008; Lophiodes lugubris (Alcock, 1894); Lophiodes miacanthus (Gilbert, 1905); and Lophiodes triradiatus (Lloyd, 1909). Of these, Sladenia cf. zhui, L. bruchius, L. endoi, L. lugubris, and L. miacanthus, are described in detail. Conclusion. The diversity of the lophiid anglerfish fauna is relatively low from the eastern Indian Ocean side of Indonesia. All species treated in the presently reported study represent the first records in Indonesian waters. A discussion of lophiid fauna from Indonesia is provided, along with a key to known species in Indonesia.

The species of Chaunax are reported from the eastern Indian Ocean side of Indonesia based on a recent collection made in 2004 and 2005. Two new species from the genus Chaunax are described from Indonesia and the Philippines, both belonging to the Chaunax abei-species group. Chaunax gomoni sp. nov. is distinguished by its white peritoneum and the following combination of characters: large irregular green spots on dorsal surface when freshly dead, spots turning dark brown when preserved; head length 39.5-40.8% SL; 10 rakers on second gill arch; 11-14 neuromasts in pectoral series and 29-38 in lateral-line proper. Chaunax brachysomus sp. nov. is distinguished by its uniform pink body when freshly dead, mixed broad-based and narrow-based spines on its ventral surface, large head and short tail resulting a relatively stout body; 12 or 13 neuromasts in pectoral series and 33 in lateral-line proper; and, 9 rakers on the second gill arch. Three additional species are reported for the first time from Indonesia.

Satyrichthys kikingeri Pogoreutz, Vitecek & Ahnelt, 2013 was described as a new species based on a single dried specimen from the Maldives, Indian Ocean. Although this species was considered to differ from the most similar species of the genus, S. laticeps (Schlegel, 1852), by numbers of barbels and anal fin rays, and several morphometric characters, it is clear that both species are inseparable as these characters were misinterpreted in the holotype in the original description of S. kikingeri. Therefore, S. kikingeri is a junior synonym of S. laticeps.

In Lake Akan, Hokkaido, northern Japan, the local population of the native and endangered Japanese crayfish Cambaroides japonicus (De Haan, 1841) is extinct, whereas the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana, 1852), an invasive species from North America, has become established and rapidly increased. This study provides information about specimens of C. japonicus preserved by Dr. Saburo Hatta from the lake in 1872. The six specimens (two males and four non-ovigerous females) are valuable evidence of C. japonicus formerly inhabiting Lake Akan. The body sizes of the specimens were 24.4–29.5 mm in carapace length and 55.7–67.4 mm in total length, and the estimated age of the largest specimen was ten years, indicating that Lake Akan of that time provided a suitable habitat. Twenty-two ectosymbiotic crayfish worms (Annelida, Clitellata, Branchiobdellida) were found attached to the specimens. Three branchiobdellidan species were identified: Cirrodrilus cirratus Pierantoni, 1905, C. inukaii (Yamaguchi, 1934) and C. megalodentatus (Yamaguchi, 1934). This is the first record of the latter two species from Lake Akan.

The genus Peristedion Lacepede, 1801 occurring around Japanese waters is reviewed, with 4 species described based on 157 Japanese specimens: Peristedion orientale Temminck and Schlegel, 1843, P. liorhynchus (Gunther, 1872), P. nierstraszi Weber, 1913, and P. amblygenys Fowler, 1938. The four species are distinguished from each other by the shape of the rostral projection, the position of the fourth sensory pore on the rostral projection, the number of branches on the filamentous barbel on the lip, the total number of chin barbels, and the shape of the perifacial rim. The present study records P. amblygenys in Japanese waters for the first time.

The whale shark Rhincodon typus is the world's largest fish and it occurs in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate waters. Here, the northernmost record of R. typus is reported, when it was found in the Sea of Okhotsk for the first time. This occurrence can be explained by the unusually high sea surface temperature during the summer of 2012.

The presumed type status of the two remaining specimens of eristedion moluccense Bleeker 1850 in the collection the Naturalis Biodiversity Center was examined by comparing them to descriptions in two Bleeker papers and an unpublished manuscript by Bleeker written for the Atlas Ichthyologique. Latin, French and Dutch parts of these papers were translated into English. The Dutch description of P. laticeps Schlegel 1852 was also translated. In the course of this study it became clear why Bleeker considered P. laticeps, a as a synonym of P. moluccense. Copyright © 2013 Magnolia Press.

The Indo-Pacific peristediid genus Satyrichthys Kaup, 1873 was first diagnosed as having a broad head with mesethmoid, postocular, parietal and preopercular spines. Later, most ichthyologists characterized Satyrichthys by its toothless jaws and strong preopercular spine. Kawai (2008) divided Satyrichthys into two genera, Satyrichthys and Scalicus, on the basis of a phylogenetic hypothesis, and redefined Satyrichthys. Seven species of Satyrichthys are recognized here, including one new species: S. clavilapis, S. laticeps, S. longiceps, S. milleri sp. nov., S. moluccensis, S. rieffeli and S. welchi. The new species is distinguished from its congeners in having equilateral-triangular rostral projections, 4 lip and 4 chin barbels, and no anterior directed spines on the upper lateral row of the caudal peduncle. Satyrichthys laticeps, previously treated as a junior synonym of S. moluccensis, is regarded as a valid species. The following new synonyms are noted: S. adeni, S. halyi and S. magnus are all junior synonyms of S. laticeps; S. isokawae is a junior synonym of S. moluccensis; and S. lingi is a junior synonym of S. welchi. In addition, a neotype is designated for S. moluccensis.

Osteological and myological characters of the genus Perryena are described and the phylogenetic position of the genus is inferred cladistically on the basis of 89 character transformation series, with Perryena representing a branch off a clade comprising the Tetrarogidae, Synanceiidae, Aploactinidae, Congiopodidae, Gnathanacanthidae and Pataecidae, following an initial divergence of the family Apistidae. Perryena is not closely related to Congiopodidae, despite its historical referral to that family. In keeping with the familial rankings given to successive branches of the remaining ingroup, the new family name Perryenidae is proposed for Perryena, here designated as the type genus of the family. © 2013 The Ichthyological Society of Japan.

A large series of Peristedion barbiger (Garman, 1899) was collected in the eastern Pacific off Peru during a joint survey conducted by the Japan Deep Sea Trawlers Association and the Instituto del Mar del Peru in 1998-2003. No detailed description of P. barbiger has been published since the original description, and the availability of 285 new specimens provided an opportunity to determine the extent morphological variability within this species. Our study revealed that the presence or absence of nasal spines and the shape of the preopercular margin, both having been used previously as taxonomic characters, vary intraspecifically. The species is diagnosed as having 16-19 dorsal-fin soft rays; 31-34 bony plates in the upper lateral row; 14-19 lower gill rakers; 17-25 chin barbels in total; short pectoral fin, 13.3-17.8% of SL; a relatively short pair of filamentous barbel on the lip, 26.4-57.1% of HL; a broad, spatulate rostral projection of a length 19.7-39.5% of HL; and a large black spot on the spinous portion of the dorsal fin. In addition, we herein designate a lectotype for P. barbiger.

A single specimen of a hermaphroditic tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes (Temminck and Schlegel, 1850), was collected from the western North Pacific, off Hokuto, Hokkaido, Japan. The left gonad of the specimen was of testicular tissue, and the right gonad was ovarian tissue sandwiched by testicular tissue. This is the first instance of hermaphrodism in this species. In addition, the anterior and posterior nostrils of the specimen were fused to each other, and the left side of the body was abnormally pigmented.

Peristedium indicum Brauer 1906 (family Peristediidae) has not been reported since its original description. Reexamination of syntypes of P. indicum revealed that P. indicum is included in the genus Paraheminodus Kamohara 1957 in having upper jaw teeth, smooth lateral margin, posterior parts of lower lateral rows of bony plates separated from each other, and all lower jaw barbels unbranched except for the posteriormost barbels. Based on a comparison of syntypes of P. indicum with all types and other materials of all congeners of Paraheminodus, it is concluded that P. indicum is a junior synonym of Paraheminodus murrayi (Günther 1880).

Satyrichthys rugosus (Fowler, 1943) was established with no comparison to other peristediid searobins. Our examination of types and other material of both S. rugosus and S. clavilapis (Fowler, 1938) has clarified that S. rugosus represents postlarvae and juveniles of the latter species. We therefore regard S. rugosus as a junior synonym of S. clavilapis and comment on its ontogenetic changes in morphology.

The family Peristediidae, comprising about 36 species of armored sea robins in five genera, inhabit the bottoms of the tropical and temperate waters of the world oceans in depths of about 50 to 800 m. The aim of this study is to infer relationships among the species in the family based on morphological characters and to revise the genus-level classification on the basis of the inferred pattern of phylogeny. Twenty-four peristediid and 16 outgroup taxa, i.e., 13 triglid and three hoplichthyid species, were used for the phylogenetic analysis. Monophyly of the Peristediidae is highly corroborated and two major clades are recognized in the family. The first clade includes Gargariscus, Heminodus, Satyrichthys, and Paraheminodus, and the second includes only Peristedion. It became clear that the genus Satyrichthys is a nonmonophyletic group. In conclusion, six monophyletic genera are recognized in the Peristediidae: Gargariscus, Heminodus, Paraheminodus, Peristedion, Satyrichthys, and Scalicus. Accordingly, I propose seven new combinations with Scalicus as follows: Scalicus engyceros, S. gilberti, S. hians, S. investigatoris, S. orientalis, S. quadratorostratus, and S. serrulatus.

A new righteye flounder, Poecilopsetta pectoralis, is described from 4 specimens (2 males, 2 females) collected from deep waters (510-580m) around New Caledonia. The species is easily distinguished from 13 congeners by having 99-105 lateral line scales, a narrow interorbit [male: 37.00-40.25 in head length (HL); female: 47.33-50.71], long pectoral fin on ocular side (male: 0.89-0.91 in HL; female: 1.04-1.20), no scales from snout to anterior interorbital region, and 4 spots on caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is evident in this species, showing males bearing the ocular-side pectoral fin longer than females, and it is the first example in Poecilopsetta.

Peristedion picturatum McCulloch, 1926 (family Peristediidae) was distinguished from P. liorhynchus (Gunther, 1872) by a single character, the presence of two bony plates between the anus and first anal ray (vs. three in P. liorhynchus). Our examination of the holotype of P. liorhynchus revealed that it also actually has just two bony plates there, not three. Based on a comparison of the holotype and other material of P. picturatum with the holotype of P. liorhynchus, we conclude that P. picturatum is a junior synonym of P. liorhynchus.

Paraheminodus kochiensis Kamohara, 1957 (family Peristediidae), has been regarded by most workers as a junior synonym of P. murrayi (GUnther, 1880), but sufficient argument for combining the two species has not been made. A detailed comparison of the type and non-type material of P. kochiensis and P. murrayi revealed no significant differences between the two; thus, their synonymy is hereby confirmed. Paraheminodus murrayi and P. laticephalus (Kamohara, 1952) are clearly distinguished by the morphology of the upper jaw teeth, length of the upper jaw, and by the number of barbels.
