Scientific journal, Abstract
The urgent need for sustainable CO2 management has driven the development of efficient catalytic systems capable of converting CO2 into value‐added chemicals under mild conditions. Herein, we report a Ni9Pd1 catalyst with a low Pd content (Ni/Pd = 9:1) for the selective CO2 hydrogenation to formate at low temperatures. Remarkably, this catalyst exhibits exceptional versatility, efficiently hydrogenating both aqueous (bi)carbonate and CO2 captured from air (as carbonate) to formate. Moreover, this catalyst shows appreciable robustness by achieving cumulative formate yields of 770.5 mmol gPd−1 (TON of 82, STY of 32.18 mmolformate gPd−1 h−1 at 28 °C) and 1371.9 mmol gPd−1 (TON of 146, STY of 57.16 mmolformate gPd−1 h−1 at 80 °C) over multiple cycles. The synergistic Ni‐to‐Pd interaction in this catalyst leads to the efficient CO2 activation and H2 dissociation, enabling operation under mild conditions. This study demonstrates an integrated and sustainable approach where CO2 captured from air can be hydrogenated to formate at low temperature. - Bio‐Based Phenol from Cashew Nutshells by Catalytic Hydrocardanol Trans‐Alkylation Using H‐ZSM‐5 Zeolite

Scientific journal, Cardanol, an unsaturated long‐chain alkylphenol derived from agricultural waste, has potential as a sustainable substrate for bio‐based phenol production. Herein, the potential of hydrocardanol, readily obtained through cardanol hydrogenation, is demonstrated as a viable feedstock for phenol production via trans‐alkylation using toluene as the alkyl acceptor. H‐ZSM‐5 (SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio = 80) exhibits a 53.7% phenol yield with a high phenolics balance (86.7%) from a 10 wt% hydrocardanol solution at full conversion in a batch reactor. In contrast, cardanol gives only 27.1% phenol under the same reaction conditions. This improved yield with hydrocardanol is attributed to suppressed formation of bi‐ and/or polycyclic phenols via self‐alkylation, due to the higher thermal stability of the saturated side chain. Realkylation of the desired phenol product largely limits the phenol yield. The model reaction experiments with phenol and 1‐pentadecene show that the reaction proceeds via hydrocardanol dealkylation on the zeolite, followed by rapid isomerization, cracking and oligomerization reactions of the resulting long‐chain olefin, and realkylation of toluene and phenol. This indicates that phenol alkylation could be suppressed by reducing the hydrocardanol‐to‐toluene ratio. This approach is validated in a fixed‐bed flow reactor, achieving a high phenol yield (>95%) with a high carbon balance (>99%). - Mild and Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural and Its Derivatives to Tetrahydrofurfuryl Compounds Catalyzed by Aluminum Oxide-supported Nickel Carbide Nanoparticles

Scientific journal, Abstract
Developing efficient catalytic processes for obtaining biobased monomers for plastics can significantly contribute to a more sustainable economy. The biomass‐derived and chemical platform 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be converted to various key intermediates, which is often hampered by side reactions due to the reactive nature of the formyl group in HMF. Here, we present a stepwise approach involving a protecting agent to obtain dimethyl furan‐2,5‐dicarboxylate (MFDC), which is a monomer for polyalkylene furanoates, a new class of biobased polyesters. Methanol is used as a solvent, reactant, and protecting agent for HMF's formyl group. In the first step, the oxidative esterification of the hydroxymethyl group to methyl carboxylate in HMF‐dimethylacetal catalyzed by Au/CeO2 affords methyl 5‐formylfuran‐2‐carboxylate dimethylacetal (MFFC‐acetal) in high yields (>90 %) from concentrated methanolic solutions (~20 wt %). Without protecting agent, a mixture of methyl‐5‐hydroxymethylfuran‐2‐carboxylate (MHMFC), MFDC, and humin byproduct was obtained. The deprotection of MFFC‐acetal in the second step proceeded efficiently in acetone with Amberlyst‐15, affording MFFC in a >90 % yield. In the final step, oxidative esterification of MFFC in methanol (10 wt %) afforded MFDC in a 93 % yield using Au/CeO2. The acetal protection strategy with methanol offers an efficient route toward MFDC in two oxidative esterification steps. - Overview of intentional formation of paired heteroatom sites in zeolite frameworks

In this study, we developed new synthesis methods of brownmillerite-type or spinel-type solid solution oxides ultrasmall particles with single-nanometer dimensions, which are electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction, using a reverse micelle method or a solvothermal method. Wavenumber of the ultrasmall particles of all solid solution oxides were shorter than those of the bulk ones. The catalytic activity of the solid solution oxides for oxygen evolution reaction were largely improved by decreasing particle size to with single-nanometers, and they acted as cocatalysts of photocatalysts for water splitting using visible light.

Glutamic acid, an abundant nonessential amino acid, was converted into 2-pyrrolidone in the presence of a supported Ru catalyst under a pressurized hydrogen atmosphere. This reaction pathway proceeded through the dehydration of glutamic acid into pyroglutamic acid, subsequent hydrogenation, and the dehydrogenation-decarbonylation of pyroglutaminol into 2-pyrrolidone. In the conversion of pyroglutaminol, Ru/Al2O3 exhibited notably higher activity than supported Pt, Pd, and Rh catalysts. IR analysis revealed that Ru can hydrogenate the formed CO through dehydrogenation-decarbonylation of hydroxymethyl groups in pyroglutaminol and can also easily desorb CH4 from the active sites on Ru. Furthermore, Ru/Al2O3 showed the highest catalytic activity among the tested catalysts in the conversion of pyroglutamic acid. Consequently, the conversion of glutamic acid produced a high yield of 2-pyrrolidone by using the supported Ru catalyst.

Quantum chemistry calculations show that the compression from both ends of SiOAl gave a high ability to accept negative charge, and the twisting of SiOAl to stretch it weakened the covalent bond of O-cation. The activation enthalpy of the catalytic reaction reflected the difference in heat of ammonia adsorption, and its relationship with the activation entropy revealed how the reaction rate was determined.

We have developed ionic liquids that dissolved cellulose or lignin; 1-methyl-1-(2-methoxyethyl)pyrrolidinium([P1ME]) 2,5-diaminohexanoate ([P1ME][Lys]) easily dissolved both lignin and cellulose. On the other hand, 1-methyl-1-(2-methoxyethyl)pyrrolidinium acetate ([P1ME][OAc]) dissolved cellulose selectively. Further, we accomplished strong acid or strong base-catalyst free acylation of cellulose using [P1ME][OAc].It was found that the cellulose solution of [P1ME][OAc] was treated with 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl benzoyl ester at 80°C to afford the corresponding cellulose benzoate with a perfect degree of substitution in excellent yield.

This study aimed efficient use of glycerol made as a byproduct through the conversion process of biomass resources. Dehydration of glycerol into acrolein was performed using various solid acids, and it revealed the relation between acid properties and the catalytic activity. Moreover, I investigated oxidehydration of glycerol, forming acrylic acid in one-pass process. The catalysts were prepared by loading of Mo-V-O as oxidation active species on ZSM-5, exhibiting high selectivity of acrolein. The investigation of the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 in ZSM-5 and the loading amount of Mo-V-O found the catalyst forming acrylic acid.
