  • Effects of Introducing Robot Milking in Family Dairy Farms: A Comprehensive Evaluation of Work and Life
    KOBAYASHI Kuniyuki; ASAJIMA Shino
Journal of Rural Economics, 96, 3, 385, 390, The Agricultural Economics Society of Japan, 25 Dec. 2024, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, This research investigates the impact of robot milking on family-owned dairy businesses’ operations and socio-economics. Interviews with five Hokkaido dairy farms focused on the reasons for adopting robot milking, changes in daily work, and labor impacts. Findings indicate that aims to introduce robot milking primarily vary on a farm’s lifecycle to expand operational scale and reduce labor demands, offering benefits like fewer working hours and more flexible schedules. However, it may increase workload related to nursing and calving, potentially keeping or raising overall working hours. The ultimate effects vary by business, underscoring the need for continued analysis in different contexts.
  • The Deployment of Livestock Protection Regulations in Britain as Social Control Policy
    ICHIMURA Toshinobu; KOBAYASHI Kuniyuki
Journal of Rural Economics, 96, 1, 61, 66, The Agricultural Economics Society of Japan, Jun. 2024, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, This study shows how interests in moral reform and social control were linked to the development of livestock protection regulations in Britain in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since the late 18th century, events such as the American and French Revolutions had heightened the social need to strengthen moral reform. The protection of livestock was seen as one such means, and livestock protection regulation was extended as moral reform spread. This suggests the logic of the development of modern animal welfare policy in Europe.
  • Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as a Social Control Policy in 19th-century Britain : Analyses on personal interest of regulatory drafters

Mar. 2023, [Peer-reviewed]
Japanese, Research institution, The beginnings of modern animal protection laws can be found in the birth of regulations concerning prevention of cruelty to animals in 19th century England. In 18th and 19th centuries, in addition to the traditional prevalence of animal games (known as blood sport) as a pastime for the lower social classes, the problem of livestock abuse in urban areas became more serious due to urbanization as a result of the Industrial Revolution. In response to this situation of cruelty to animals, several regulatory proposals on prevention of cruelty to animals were submitted to the parliament at the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century, out of concern for the state of social control. The drafters of these proposals attempted to control social order by regulating cruelty to animals, based on the idea that the improvement of morals would contribute to the stability of society. This paper analyzes the social conditions behind the establishment of regulations concerning prevention of cruelty to animals in 19th-century England and the interests of the regulation drafters.

Animal science journal = Nihon chikusan Gakkaiho, 92, 1, e13570, Jan. 2021, [Peer-reviewed], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, In this study, we investigated the regional differences in the composition of farm bulk milk produced at three different dairy areas in Hokkaido, Japan. A field survey was conducted at Central, Tokachi, and North areas of Hokkaido, three or four times a year. At each farm, an interview questionnaire for farm basal data was conducted, and 500 ml of bulk tank milk sample was obtained. Fatty acid composition, and vitamin and carotenoid concentrations in the milk samples were determined. In Central and Tokachi areas, corn silage was used as the main forage. In North area, fresh herbage was the dominant feed in the summer season, and grass hay was the main feed in the winter season. Discriminant analysis revealed that the composition of milk samples differed among the areas and seasons. Milk from Central and Tokachi areas contained a higher ratio of linoleic acid compared with that from North area, but there were only slight differences in the composition of milk between Central and Tokachi areas. The concentrations of carotenoids and α-tocopherol were higher in samples from North area and the ratios of trans-vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid were higher in the summer season than in the indoor season.

    Japanese,

Objective: This study aimed to examine the work engagement and its association with work related factors among dairy farmers in Japan.

Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted for dairy farmers living in two towns located at Hokkaido Prefecture, and 229 responses with full data were analyzed. Work engagement was assessed using the Japanese version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for comparisons of the work engagement scores between ages, genders, two types of feeding management (tie-stall/free-stall barn) or numbers of milking cows.

Results: Males reported higher work engagement scores than females, but there were no differences between ages, the types of feeding management or numbers of milking cows. The higher-job control group reported significantly higher work engagement scores than the lower-job control group. More work support network was associated with work engagement. For participants under the age of 50s, the higher-job demand group reported more work engagement.

Discussions: Results suggested that higher job control and support network were beneficial for promoting work engagement for dairy farmers. These findings will be helpful for planning strategies to focus on work engagement in the dairy farming community.

English, Scientific journal, Dairy farmers are more likely than nonfarmers to experience high demands and are at risk of mental health problems. However, there is scarce evidence on the current state of psychological health and related factors among dairy farmers, and the knowledge of potential gender differences is limited. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and its association with work environment characteristics and to identify gender differences. Data were collected from 273 dairy farmer participants (169 males and 104 females) in Japan. Females were more likely to be depressed, and young and middle-aged women appeared to be at risk of depression. For both genders, a demanding work environment was related to depression. There were some gender differences; for example, worries about the harmful effects of pesticides on health and the balancing of family roles and work roles were related to depression in men, while worries about one's financial situation and the health status of livestock were associated with depression in women. Females benefited from support through direct interaction, while males benefited from involvement in social activities. These findings will contribute to the development of a gender-specific approach to promote psychological health in the dairy farming community.

The Nokei Ronso : The Review of Agricultural Economics, Hokkaido University, 73, 59, 67, Hokkaido University, Research Faculty of Agriculture, 2020
Japanese, Research institution, This article aims at revealing the current phase of Hokkaido agriculture, which has been developed mainly for the purpose of maintaining productivity by expanding the farm scale due to the decreased number of farmhouses, as rural living space. It is necessary to clarify the sustainability of local agriculture and rural areas from the viewpoint of the function of farmers. organizations that have shaped the future of regional agriculture.
In this paper, it is explored to clarify (1) the actual situation as a local living space, and (2) how the adjustment of farmland utilization is being made under the control of the Dairy Promotion Association which has been playing crucial role in the region.
The agriculture in the region, which had been formed by the same size of farmers until then, has been experiencing diversification in terms of size, dairy husbandry methods, corporation forms and so on. As a conclusion, we will discuss how to create a place to discuss regional agriculture and the future of the region.
  • Importance of Building Various Relationships for Securing Agricultural Workforce and Enhancing Interaction between Urban And Rural Areas : A Case Study of Agricultural Part-Time Job at "Nourakukai" in Assabu-cho, Hokkaido

The Nokei Ronso : The Review of Agricultural Economics, Hokkaido University, 74, 87, 97,
Japanese, Research institution, In recent years, the labor shortage in agriculture has become more serious, and it has become difficult to secure the temporary labor force that has been procured in the region. On the other hand, young people are becoming more interested in rural areas, and the temporary labor force may be an opportunity for exchange between urban and rural areas. In this article, we analyze the acquisition of agricultural part-time workers not only as a means of securing a labor force but also from the perspective of exchange between urban and rural areas in order to discuss a new solution to the problem of securing a labor force in agriculture. This study (1) considers the possibility for agricultural part-time workers to attract people with diverse interests to the region, (2) analyzes the cooperation implementation system between agriculture and other efforts and the host entity, (3) and clarifies the establishment of relationships with the region by people who visit the region through agricultural part-time jobs. When considering an agricultural part-time job as a form of urban-rural exchange, it is necessary for the area that provides the agricultural part-time job to be aware of the interests of employees and to build a business that makes the best use of the characteristics of the area. In addition to farm work hours, it is also important for the employer side to provide opportunities for exchange, such as exchange time and participation in local events.

Food research international (Ottawa, Ont.), 125, 108528, 108528, Nov. 2019, [Peer-reviewed], [International Magazine]
English, Scientific journal, This study investigated the effect of three ageing methods (dry, wet and stepwise wet-then-dry) and ageing time on pH, colour, yield, lipid and protein oxidation and eating quality of beef loins using Meat Standards Australia (MSA) sensory protocols with 900 and 540 consumers in Australia and Japan, respectively. Australian beef loins (Longissimus thoracis et lumborum) at four days post mortem were subjected to wet ageing (boneless; for 7, 21, 35 or 56 days), dry ageing (bone-in; for 35 or 56 days) or a wet-then-dry ageing method (bone-in; 21 days wet ageing followed by 35 days dry ageing). The pH was higher in dry aged than wet aged beef loins (P < .001). Instrumental measurement of surface colour of trimmed dry and wet aged steaks showed significant differences in a*, b* and hue angle. Weight loss was higher in dry aged primals (P < .001), however, total water content was similar among the two ageing methods (P = .934). Retail yield did not differ between 35 and 56 days dry aged primals. Lipid (TBARS) and protein (total carbonyl content) oxidation between the dry and wet aged samples differed depending on the ageing time. When comparing the wet-then-dry and 56 days dry aged samples, only pH and retail yield differed. Australian and Japanese consumers rated dry aged steaks significantly higher (P < .001) than the wet aged counterparts for tenderness, juiciness, flavour, overall liking and weighted palatability scores. The wet-then-dry steaks were also rated higher than the 56 days wet aged steaks for flavour, overall liking and palatability within the Japanese sensory panels. The Japanese consumers also consistently rated all MSA sensory attributes lower (P < .001) than the Australian consumers. The results from this study show dry ageing provides a value adding opportunity for the meat industry in both domestic and export markets.

Japanese, Scientific journal, In recent years, the rural leader problem and the aging problem have become topics of primary concern in Hokkaido. New farmers have been recognized as a vital presence for the rural areas. This study, comparing two rural areas, where the numbers of new farmers are increasing, is proposed to further understand the relationship between the regions in Hokkaido with regard to new farmers. Relationships between the regions of the new farmers of both regions by new farmers system showed a different trend. But it has revealed that the new farmers are important presence as well as principal of agricultural production.
  • Functions of JA for Sustainable Agriculture in Rural Areas:How Agricultural Cooperatives Could Establish Positive Relations with Advanced Farms for Rural Development
    KOBAYASHI Kuniyuki
Journal of Rural Economics, 90, 3, 249, 258, The Agricultural Economics Society of Japan, 2018, [Peer-reviewed]
    Japanese,

This article aims to explore functions of JAs (Japan Agricultural cooperatives) for sustainability of agriculture in rural areas. It is obvious that advanced and robust farm management is necessary for such sustainability. However, farm management still requires support from JAs that can embed these farms in rural areas so that the farms establish relations with actors in rural areas. In addition to these supports, JAs play a function to attract and create new entrants into farm management. In order to accomplish such function, the following conditions are necessary. Firstly, it is important for JAs and the farms to set and share a goal of sustainable agriculture in terms of not only economics but also quality of life. Secondly, it is necessary for regional development to actively establish net-works that extend outside of the region, which gives JAs new and inspirational ideas for creating better methods to fulfill their functions.

    Japanese,

The purpose of this study, using Hyouryuu Okayama Co., Ltd. (HO) as a case study, is to clarify the significance of in-shop intermediate organizations that are profitable, as a mechanism and sales channels. Features of the case include "their collection delivery", "packaging," "hope shipments total amount of the collection of the producer", and "purchase". Since the sales profit rate is about 33%, the in-shop business of HO is profitable. Not only the main channel, but also those who are a sub-channel, play roles that have implications for the producers.

  • The Role of Campeigner in the Socialization Process of Ethical Consumption in the United Kingdom

Journal of Rural Economics, 88, 4, 461, 466, The Agricultural Economics Society of Japan, 2017, [Peer-reviewed]
    Japanese,

In order to achieve fairness in price formation in the food chain, it is beneficial to spread and fix the concept of ethical consumption. In the United Kingdom, social movement organizations, known as "Campaigners", play an important role to uncover ethical issues, tell the story behind them and raise awareness of the in society. It is also necessary to communicate ethical issues through interaction with the media and consumers. This study shows how the campaigners play a major role in expanding the idea of Ethical Consumption, and proposes a hypothetical model of the socialization process through three case studies.

  • What can be deduced from a debate on self-supplied forage milk yield per unit of land area?
    Kobayashi Kuniyuki
Apr. 2016
Japanese, Scientific journal, The purpose of this study is to calculate the self-supplied forage milk yield-necessary to promote dairy management based on self-supplied forage - from actual survey data, and to study the self-supplied forage milk yield per unit of land area, which is equivalent to land productivity. The self-supplied forage milk yields of eight dairy farmers in Hokkaido were calculated and used to categorize the farmers into three groups according to type of management: (i) dairy management which achieved high self-supplied forage milk yield through efficient use of self-supplied forage; (ii) dairy management which produced average self-supplied forage milk yield but high milk yield per delivered cow(i.e. a cow that has calved at least once) through use of purchased feed concentrates in addition to self-supplied forage; and (iii) dairy management which only produced low milk yield from self-supplied forage. Land is the most fundamental farming resource. In light of this, it is necessary to maximize the use of farmland by shifting to farm management based on self-supplied forage, which is resilient to changes in the external environment and therefore stable. To make this shift possible, efficient land use will be a priority management goal, of which self-supplied forage milk yield is a useful indicator. The case study also revealed that the self-supplied forage milk yield per unit of land area considered adequate for the management of individual dairy farmers differs from the maximum self-supplied forage milk yield that can be produced from land. Individual farmers do not experience management problems if they can earn large incomes even where their self-supplied forage milk yield per unit of land area is low. However, the fact that some farmers within a district experience self-supplied forage shortages and need to purchase feed shows the importance of improving the efficiency of the use of land, a common local resource, beyond individual farm management

Japanese, Scientific journal, In 1991, the general assembly of Japan's agricultural cooperatives decided to undertake a restructuring, referred to as "Two stages for business under a two-stage federation system" .Following the decision, the prefectural federations of economic agricultural cooperatives ("prefectural cooperatives")were reorganized into 35 prefectural headquarters under the ZEN-NOH federation, leaving eight independent prefectural cooperatives whose economic activities were reformed to focus on sales in order to strengthen their prefectural functions. We previously studied independent prefectural cooperatives in Hokkaido, Kagoshima, and other prefectures. In this paper, we report the situation of the independent prefectural cooperatives in Aichi prefecture. Aichi maintains strong agriculture of mainly vegetable and flower production in the vicinity of Nagoya city. This study revealed several reasons why prefectural cooperatives in Aichi did not unite with ZEN-NOH, including the following: Aichi is near the major cities of Tokyo and Osaka, in addition to Nagoya, which consumes most of the produce of the prefecture such as rice and beef, the unit cooperatives in Aichi are very well-run; and there were no ZEN-NOH facilities in Aichi.

The Nokei Ronso : The Review of Agricultural Economics Hokkaido University, 70, 85, 94,
Japanese, Research institution, The purpose of this paper is to clarify agricultural cooperatives role in restructuring paddy agriculture since the late 1990s in Hokkaido. In particular, attention is paid to a farming advisory service. It is intended to clarify the charactaristics and problems of the managementof the cooperatives through a case study of JA Iwanizawa. During the paddy agriculture-restructuring period, the management balance of the cooperative worsened. Because the farming advisory service is a not-profit business, the allocation of human resources to the advisory business has become an important issue. As a solution to the problem, the cooperative executed the following reforms. It increased the levy of the farming advisory business. Then, the technology dissemination project was shifted to a study group organization. For improving and strengthening the credit and mutual aid businesses that form the main revenue resource, the cooperative plans to establish a loan center and a unit for expanding associate member business. However, it is recognized that the expansion of non-agricultural loans and mutual aid business in order to compensate for the reduction of each business is difficult. Because the reduction in the number of members means a reduction in the cooperative's captal, it is important for the cooperative to construct equity capital. The cooperative is also planning to update its production facilities in order to expand capacity and improve efficiency. The cooperative has taken a system that maintains a branch office function since the merger in 1993. However, the reduction of business and administrative expenses is coming to the limit. Therefore, it is neseccary to condier a change in the organizational structure.

On the other hand, there are eight independent prefectural cooperatives whose economic activities were revised to focus on sales in order to strengthen the prefectural functions. Previously, we studied independent prefectural cooperatives, such as the one in Hokkaido Prefecture. In this paper we report the situation of independent prefectural cooperatives in Kagoshima prefecture, which maintains strong agriculture mainly in terms of stockbreeding and horticulture. This study revealed several reasons why prefectural cooperatives in Kagoshima did not unite with Zennoh.
  • Community-Based Tourism to Rural Areas in Hokkaido : A Case Study of Mugichen Tourism

The Nokei Ronso : The Review of Agricultural Economics Hokkaido University, 68, 53, 62,
Japanese, Research institution, Agritourism has been receiving increasing attention as one of the key elements for rural development. Although tourism has been mainly planned and conducted by tourism agencies, there is a new trend called "community-based tourism." This new tourism is run by local people ― for example farmers, food producers and retailers. Agritourism is designed not only to offer good local food and picturesque scenery, but also to inform participants about issues concerned related to agriculture, food and the rural community through interacting with local people. This paper explored a case study of community-based tourism in Hokkaido called mugichen, designed to foster an understanding of agriculture, in particular wheat production, in Hokkaido. We argue that community-based tourism could enhance understanding of agriculture and rural issues such as where and how food comes from.

The review of agricultural economics, Hokkaido University, 65, 43, 54, The Department of Agricultural Economics, Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, 2010
Japanese, Research institution, This study aimed to evaluate the new system of agricultural advisory services of the Japanese Agricultural Co-operatives (JA), especially Large-scale JA in Hokkaido. Under current economics circumstances, some JAs have decided to achieve economic merit by large-scale merging. However, seeking this merit of scale can often go in the opposite direction in building good relationships with members. We explored JA KITAMIRAI which employs a new system of agricultural advisory services to achieve both the merit of scale and fostering good relations with its members. The new system is characterized by a unique organization which encourages staff of the JA to visit memberユs farm to give advices directly. We found that the new system of advisory services have the possibility to achieve economic merit of scale and foster a good relation with members as long as JA establishes a new system of business management and education of the staff of JA.

    Kobayashi Kuniyuki
The review of agricultural economics, Hokkaido University, 63, 97, 109, The Department of Agricultural Economics, Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, 2008
Japanese, Research institution, Although Japanese Agricultural Co-operatives (JA) used to be a dominant information channel for farmers, now farmers can acquire information through information resources other than JA. Some farmers, in particular, large famers in business scales tend to rely on non-JA resources such as advisory consultants or accountants since JA’s services cannot match their needs. To meet farmers’ needs of information, JA’s information advisory service needs to be more effective and competitive. However, there is little literature on the issue. This paper explored distinctive attributes of information advisory services by JA for fuller understanding. Two attributes were found out : comprehensiveness and specific information. These two attributes directly result from JA’s characteristics : comprehensive businesses and territoriality. In addition, it is noticeable that JA’s information advisory services can establish trust in relationship between members and staff through interactions in the service. Trust is seen as an important factor for successful management of co-operatives.

  • Deployment of Food Industry, and Formation Logic of the Supply System of Materials : The case of The potato for processing in Hokkaido Tokachi
    KOBAYASHI Kuniyuki
12, 1, 75, 89, THE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS SOCIETY OF HOKKAIDO, 10 Mar. 2005
Japanese, Scientific journal, The research subject of this paper is clarifying about the supply system of materials that an agricultural cooperative's and an agricultural farmer's built. An object is the market of the potato for food processing expanded late in the 1970s. The supply system of materials is systematic correspondence to a agro industry aiming at maximization of a profit of the farmer who produces using the limited land and the limited labor force. Based on it, the added value and risk that belong to a farmer are clarified. The contract that made the individual farmhouse the unit is performed in the system with the powerful initiative nature of agro industry. Therefore, systematic correspondence of a farmer is restricted. Then, the Memuro-cho agricultural cooperatives has started plural sale, a processing enterprise with a new article kind. On the other hand, in Shihoro-cho agricultural cooperatives that is the powerful system of a farmer's initiative nature, the consumer place location type factory is built in accordance with the selling strategy of agro industry. Moreover, plural sale centering on trust processing with major food processors was realized, and the profit is brought to the farmer. The factors that form the supply system of the materials by the agricultural cooperatives are the following points. As a near regulation factor of capital, it is the deployment process of the agro industry set the development stage of a market, and on the basis of competition between capital. As a farmer's near regulation factor, it competes and comes out between the places of production based on the history and productive capacity of local agricultural promotion by the agricultural cooperative association.

This study built a framework to analyze differences in market shares and degree of producers' solidarity to agricultural cooperatives from a combined view points of economic and socio-relational factors. We found that in the agricultural sectors where products have become generic commodities, (1)farmers are more differentiated, (2)market competition is more intensive, (3)larger producers tend to have stronger competitiveness-oriented norm and more affected neolibelarist discourses, and vice versa. Some cooperatives have showed their attempts to (a)obtain scale and scope economies via M&A and conversion into profit-oriented firms, (b)introduce new business and organizational strategies, and (d)reformulate governance structure in order to improve members' organizational and operational participation.
