Scientific journal, Abstract
Three long sediment cores recovered from the SE Pacific were subjected to a comprehensive magnetostratigraphic investigation. According to the partly preliminary age models obtained, the cores reach 48, 140, and 482 ka back in time, respectively. At two sites (PC02 and PC03 at ∼46°S) sedimentation rates are highly variable, ranging from about 2 to 100 cmka−1, whereas sedimentation rates are significantly lower at the southernmost site (PC04, ∼51°S), ranging from about 1 to 20 cmka−1. All three cores provide evidence for the Laschamps geomagnetic excursion at 41 ka. However, the excursion was recorded during times of low sedimentation rates and thus, only little detail on geomagnetic field variability could be obtained. Nevertheless, the excursion is documented in inclination and declination, thus as a full reversal, and is associated with a deep low in relative paleointensity. At site PC04, the Iceland Basin excursion (∼195 ka) was also recorded as a short almost reversed phase, followed by an apparently long phase of non‐dipolar directions, all associated with a deep low in paleointensity. This is interpreted as the result of variable sedimentation rates not resolved by the preliminary age model of the core. A directional anomaly coinciding with a deep low in paleointensity at around 220 ka is interpreted as the Pringle Falls excursion. Besides these findings, no evidence for further excursions could be found in the studied cores. - Orbital timescale CaCO3 burial and dissolution changes off the Chilean margin in the subantarctic Pacific over the past 140 kyr

Scientific journal, Abstract
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) dissolution at the Southern Ocean seafloor has hypothetically contributed to lowering the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration by increasing ocean alkalinity during glacial periods. We present new CaCO3 burial and dissolution records from two sediment cores obtained off the Chilean margin in the subantarctic SE Pacific and covering the past 140 kyr since Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6. These records include CaCO3 contents and mass accumulation rates, and microfossil-based analysis results, including fragmentation ratios, sieve-based weights (SBWs), and ultrastructural observations of planktic foraminiferal tests. Our bulk CaCO3-based analyses and Globorotalia inflata SBWs revealed three major CaCO3 dissolution events during colder stages of MIS 5d and 5b and at the MIS 5/4 boundary that are traceable events in the eastern South Pacific along the Chilean margin and in the Drake Passage. Furthermore, CaCO3 burial exhibited pronounced glacial/interglacial fluctuations, with almost no burial during glacials (MIS 6, 4, 3, and 2) and recovery during interglacials (MIS 5e and 1) and early glacials (MIS 5d–a). This pattern agrees with previous observations over a wide area of the Southern Ocean, except in the deep Cape Basin > 4600 m in the South Atlantic Ocean. Considering that our sites were located upstream of the Drake Passage, the Circumpolar Deep Water, which was influenced by carbon-rich Pacific Deep Water, likely propagated from the subantarctic eastern Pacific to the South Atlantic at least at depths of ~ 3000 to ~ 4000 m and decreased CaCO3 burial during glacials. These findings supported the importance of carbonate compensation in the Southern Ocean for the carbon cycle on the glacial/interglacial timescale. - A marine record of Patagonian ice sheet changes over the past 140,000 years

English, Scientific journal, Calcite shells of planktic foraminifera (Protista, Rhizaria) constitute a large portion of deep-sea sediments. The shells are constructed by sequential addition of partly overlapping chambers with diverse shapes, resulting in complex shell architectures, which are genetically fixed and diagnostic at the species level. The characterisation of the complete architecture requires three-dimensional imaging of the shell, including the partially or entirely covered juvenile chambers. Here we provide reconstructed x-ray micro computed tomography image stacks of 179 specimens of extant planktic foraminifera collected from plankton tows, sediment traps and surface sediments. The specimens have fully resolved and curated taxonomy and represent 43 of the currently recognised 48 holoplanktic species and subspecies. The image stacks form a basis for further applications, such as the characterisation of the architectural morphospace of the extant taxa, allowing studies of species functional ecology, calcification intensity and reconstructions of phylogenetic relationships. - Data report: calibration of XRF scanning CaCO3 estimates for the upper 30 m along the Site U1543 splice, International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 383

(PNAS: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)に掲載された。

To examine the westerlies changes before and after the onset of global warming and to assess background variability, we reconstructed past westerlies changes of both hemispheres during the last ca. eight hundred years using marine sediment cores obtained from the upper continental slope of southern Chile and lake sediment cores derived from Lake Suigetsu and Onuma, Japan. The deposition flux of Asian dust in Lake Suigetsu sediments suggests a relatively stable westerly jet path after the onset of global warming. In contrast, detrital material fluxes and provenance of marine sediments derived from the continental slope of southern Chile suggest a poleward shift of the southern westerlies since the late 1800s, especially during the late 1900s.
